If you do Folder|Maintainance Center|Check integrity/repair,
and check all of your folders and there will be no error, then the backup file
will likely be OK.

You don't NEED to copy the registry key. If you don't do it, you will have to
do a few extra steps like pasting your license key and a few other setting. I
have forgotten it or suffered a crash and it is not really a big deal. You
would want to get any custom dictionaries which I never do, and back up the
images folder in the program folder which I do since I have a ton of
customizations

The TBK file is the best solution IF it works and doesn't get corrupted

Because I've more programs installed of which the data are at other
partitions, I did have made C, D, E and F partitions as I have at my old
computer well the sizes differ. :-)
So, Rick's solution worked fine.
But I've still to transfer many settings of other programs sigh.

Whether this would work without copying the registry as Rick said is
another question.

In any case, backing up manually is always recommended; but I would
use the manual way only if the automated backup-restore doesn't work.
It has worked without problems the last couple of times over the
years.

I don't trust the backup function either. If there's any corruption in the
backup file, you lose everything.

Just copy the mail directory from one computer to the other using whatever
works for you (external drive, USB stick, cloud drive) and then copy it down to
the new computer wherever you like. Install TB! on the new machine and once
you've started it up, go to Preferences and then System and set the Mail
directory to wherever you copied the mail directory to. It takes time to copy
everything, of course, but it's unlikely anything will go wrong.

This works only if you have the same directory structure and disk
names.

Another way is to use the internal backup function (under Tools) and
create a .tbk file. Move this file to a removable disk.

On the new computer, downlaod and install TB!. It will ask you whether
you want to restore and create a new (first) account. Choose "restore"
and point to that file (of course you would need to either copy the
.tbk file onto the new computer first or keep the external hard drive
connected.)

I have done this a couple of times.

Copy your mail directory to somewhere where you can restore from.
Run this and change the path to where you want it to go and rename it to
something that makes sense for you as this example would put "test.reg" in the
"C:\test". i put mine in the mail directory
regedit /e c:\test\test.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT

Also copy things like the images folder if you have customized smilies and any

import them into the new installation)

Huh? And how would you *access* these messages, if they are
not transferred?

You can only do this when your laptop is part of a local
network and both your desktop and your laptop access the
same message base.

I don't want to access them on my laptop, as I have them on

I just want to be able to download new messages with my

In that case, copy the TB registry into your laptop, copy

copy all the account.* files.

That should work.

Hi Jerry,

On 09 December 2000 at 00:58:09 -0500 (which was 05:58 where I
live) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote and made these points:

R Open up a command prompt window. You will see that you are in a
R folder. Possible C:\ (the root of the C: drive).

Jan I am a neophyte at this. In my old system, TB resides:
Jan D:\Program Files\The Bat\thebat.exe. So, I assume, I want a
Jan D prompt?

No. You are dealing with the system registry, not TB here. That is in
your WINDOWS folder.

R Enter the following two commands:

R regedit /e thebatcu.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!"
R regedit /e thebatlm.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RIT"

Jan Substituting /d for /e?

NONONONO! /e is the command to "export". /d means nothing to the
regedit program.

R You will now have two files in the current directory: thebatcu.reg
R and thebatlm.reg. Copy these . . . to the new machine.

Jan To anywhere on the C drive (where all programs are
Jan going)?

You can control the destination by using this syntax:

regedit /e x:\path\thebatcu.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!"
regedit /e c:\path\thebatlm.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RIT"

where "x:\path\" could be "c:\temp" or "d:\" or anywhere else you
choose. If you don't specify a path, the .reg files will end up in the
directory logged in step (1) at the very beginning.

R On the new machine, use Explorer to locate these two files and, when
R you've found them, double click each in turn. That will load the
R information from the .reg files into the registry on the new computer.
R --

Jan But with info for a nonexistent E drive?

Huh? What E drive? If the /e has confused you then you don't need an
answer.

R i did move TB using a ZIP and the registry-trick and it works like
R a charm. only had to edit the .reg files because i put TB in a
R different directory than where it used to be on the old machine.

Jan Which I assume I would have to do, too?

You are moving TB from a path on drive D on your old machine. If you
are putting TB on the same path on drive D on the new machine then,
no, you don't. If you are using a different drive or a different path
then yes, you do.

Jan I don't know how to edit the .reg files,

Notepad.

Jan where they might be,

Wherever you have put them. I have now explained quite clearly, I
think, how to do this.

Jan how to get at them.

With windows explorer.

Jan Help, please. Also, does this procedure alter my registry (at
Jan which possibility my heart becomes faint?)

Yes it does - that's the whole point. Most of TB's intimate settings
are held in the registry. Without altering you new registry to include
these settings you're starting from scratch.

Jan Please excuse my inexperience here. If it's any compensation, I
Jan write very good books.

Upgrading System: How to Transfer TB from Old Computer to New?

2000-12-08 Thread JM14

Hi TBUD Listers,

I'm upgrading from my old computer to a new one. Wanting to
start with a new registry, I have reinstalled my major
programs onto the new system, then, using an Iomega Zip
Drive, have transfered data from the old box to the new.

Everything but my attempts to move TB has gone well. I'm
using version 1.45 of TB and don't have a clean zipped
download anymore, only my expanded and installed working
program. I can move everything in TB, including all my
folders and filters, from the old machine to the new, but I
can't make TB run in anything but its original prsistine
congfiguration, in which it informs me that this is a trial
version (I'm a registered paid-up user), and which won't
read -- or can't find -- any of my folders.

I'm going a little nutty. This is the single stumbling
block left to me making the final transition to my new
system. (Since TB is my e-mail client, and has all my many
saved messages and filters in it, I am at the moment forced
to use the old box -- at least if I want to get my e-mail in
all its filtered, filed, and auto-responding glory.)

How do I do this, friends?

Many thanks,
Jerry Mundis

you've found them, double click each in turn. That will load the
information from the .reg files into the registry on the new computer.

i did move TB using a ZIP and the registry-trick and it works like a charm.
only had to edit the .reg files because i put TB in a different directory
than where it used to be on the old machine.

Hello Michal,

Save those 2 Registry entries by running these commands from a DOS box:

@regedit /e "C:\TheBatUserRegSetting.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT"
@regedit /e "C:\TheBatMachineRegSetting.reg" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RIT"

Then copy then .reg files to the new system and import them.

I would install the newest beta before doing this.

Re[2]: Upgrading System: How to Transfer TB from Old Computer to New?

2000-12-08 Thread JM14

Rob,

I can move everything in TB, including all my folders and filters, from
the old machine to the new, but I can't make TB run in anything but its
 original prsistine congfiguration,

R this is from a post by Marck Pearlstone in the TBOT . . .
R . .

R -
R Open up a command prompt window. You will see that you are in a
R folder. Possible C:\ (the root of the C: drive).

I am a neophyte at this. In my old system, TB resides:
D:\Program Files\The Bat\thebat.exe. So, I assume, I want a
D prompt?

R Enter the following two commands:

R regedit /e thebatcu.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!"
R regedit /e thebatlm.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RIT"

Substituting /d for /e?

R You will now have two files in the current directory:
R thebatcu.reg and thebatlm.reg. Copy these . . . to the
R new machine.

To anywhere on the C drive (where all programs are
going)?

R On the new machine, use Explorer to locate these two files and, when
R you've found them, double click each in turn. That will load the
R information from the .reg files into the registry on the new computer.
R --

But with info for a nonexistent E drive?

R i did move TB using a ZIP and the registry-trick and it
R works like a charm. only had to edit the .reg files
R because i put TB in a different directory than where it
R used to be on the old machine.

Which I assume I would have to do, too? I don't know how to
edit the .reg files, where they might be, how to get at
them. Help, please. Also, does this procedure alter my
registry (at which possibility my heart becomes faint?)

Please excuse my inexperience here. If it's any
compensation, I write very good books.

Many thanks,
Jerry Mundis

Thanks. This may be the best way to go for me. I can find
the Halloween version at the RIT Labs site, but not 1.48
beta 11. Where can I download it?

Thank you,
