What would be the consequences of your Sequoia breaking loose, crashing and
catching fire on the way back from where it currently resides to Houston?

I am getting reamed.

I spent the entire day with a roadside mobile-mechanic futily attempting to get
back on the road.

I abandoned the Sequoia at the Chevron station, and called my
estranged-brother-in-law ( my half-sister's husband ) to come rescue me. That
was a low-point in my life.

A wrecker service is supposed to take the Sequoia to a shop in the town of
Mansfield, where it may need expensive repairs.

I am at my half-sister's house now, in Mansfield quite bummed out and concerned
about my immediate future.

Meanwhile, drama is going on down in Houston that I should have been there to
deal with.

At this point, I am past the limit of exhaustion to deal with it all.

I should have gone and sat in front of a waterfall like my 6th Sense told me to
do.

I must find a ride to Houston. I may have to take a bus.

I have decided to give blogging another try.My previous attempts failed
miserably to annoy anybody.

I am not sure how you find me on a blog, but I think the link below shows 10
post that I blogged over the last 4 years.

Below is an example of a post that I added to my blog I today.

http://david-locklear.blogspot.com/2017/06/mageia-6-release-candidate-may-2017.html

I should I have another blog out there somewhere on the web that I have not
used in years, from
before the blog above started.

The NSS Convention is just 19 days away. In order for me to attend that I
would want to leave
Houston by Thursday the 15th, or Friday the 16th. But knowing my past
attempts, I will probably
leave late, and arrive late.

I have some new drama this year that I did not have on my road-trip to Nevada
last summer. I ma
living in a motel, and it would be stupid to pay for a motel here in Houston,
during the days I am out
of town. While that would only be about $ 280 thrown away, it is still just
stupid. Moving out of the
motel, would be complicated as I have most of my stuff here just as I would in
a furnished apartment,
It would take a full-day to pack up and store all my stuff in storage. That
would just be inconvenient,
as I would have to repeat the process when coming back.Plus I do not want
to lose this particular
room as it is the best one in the motel. My next issue is 2 shyster
customers ripped me off and it
is starting to look like I am going to lose about $ 1,400.My next issue, is
my gas-guzzling Seqouia
needs lots of maintenance. If I were a betting person, I would bet that I
do not make it to the Howdy
Party this year. So realistically, I need to lower my expectations, and
just try to attend the Tuesday
festivities only and just get a Day Pass.

Bill Stone has problems with feral hogs and I think he said he's got a live

Re: [Texascavers] [TCR Food]

2017-02-10 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
Thanks for forcing my hand, Don. I was going to write some suggestions/words
later, but I’ll start now:

Firstly I’ll say I’m going to ignore a lot of the stuff Charles wrote; best
leave those electrons to die out there on the interwebs.

c) Cooking for 350 people is a lot of work, but not as much as you’d think and
especially if you have friends. I don’t have nearly as many friends as Charles
did when he was in charge, but we made do. If you have lots of friends with a
passing interest in food then step forward, you *can* do it. It’s lots of fun
too. I will provide some coaching, but it’ll have to be way before TCR (I’m
hiding onsite that weekend ;-)

b) If you go this route then expect TCR to cost more. I’d estimate it’ll at
least double the cost of food, you won’t get a variety nor a complete meal,
either.

a) Where would be the fun in that? I’d suggest instead that you gather a
bunch of people together and cook as a group. Maybe Grottos, and invite other
Grottos over.

Currently TCR doesn't have a head cook, or menu. There have been complaints,
rumors and talk about this subject. It seems there are three options: (a) fend
for yourselves, (b) caterer, (c) volunteers come forward to cook.

Each has its benefit and drawbacks. I need to get a feel for options.

"criticism" & "opinion". However, novices (volunteers who stepped up to do a
job when no one else would) aren't usually trained or skilled or ready to deal

At TCR typically I ask critics to step up and help solve whatever they think
isn't happening to their expectation. One of two things happens; they step up
and do something -or- they shut up and do nothing. In my experience the vast
majority of complainers choose the latter.

At TCR, lots of people voice ideas about how it -should- be done, and I get
tons of criticism of how "it got done wrong", or how "it should be done in the
future" or how "it was done better in the past". Plenty of suggestions, oodles
of constructive ideas. But when it come time for those same volunteers to step
up and stand behind their suggestions and help - very very few ever follow
through. Ever. They usually disappear with the words "how about helping out
then?" The ones that actually see the job done are the ones who want it done
and do it.

Criticism can be constructive, such as when someone expects it or asks for it.
Or the critic is willing to step in and help firsthand, which is usually
welcomed. Especially useful are wisdom and experience. Otherwise it's just
opinion.

So here we go again with the Texas Caver. Every few years we are seeking a new
editor or at least discussing options that might disburse the rowdy crowds that
are assembling at the gates with torches and pitchforks.

What is gong on here? Why is it that every few years there is a Texas Caver
crisis and a less than graceful transition to a new editor?

There is lots of talk about the Texas Caver. From the outset, there seems to
have been some confusion regarding the difference between good journalism and
nice graphic arts. Unfortunately, neither has been regularly in evidence.
Maybe I've missed it, but I can't recall anyone praising the Caver for high
quality journalism or the reliability of production. The editor has a few
passionate defenders who are willing to do battle with any and all detractors,
but the current editorial has now acknowledged what has been evident for
several years.

The coming transition is an opportunity to learn from previous mistakes. Texas
cavers appreciate good grammar, proper spelling, and nice graphics but, failing
that, are willing to forgive a lot if the Caver shows signs of having been
carefully crafted with attention to detail: nice photographs properly
captioned and credited; articles well laid out with all elements present; no
space used as a personal blog; and perhaps most importantly, timely production.

I was handed a copy of the most recent Texas Caver at the TSA meeting Sunday
morning, October 16. When I looked at the cover, my first thought was "huh?"
I rotated the page through 360 degrees as I searched in vain for a person or
anything for scale. Despairing, I then looked inside for the caption
information. I didn't find much. The picture credits Peter Bosted and
apparently depicts a scene from the Big Island, Hawaii. I infer that it
pictures something within a cave and is not merely a hand sample from a flea

[Texascavers] TCR cooks wrap-up (sort of...)

2016-10-18 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
The coolers are washed and put away, the recycling sorted (thanks all for only
0.5% trash in there!) and put out, bills paid... Only the washing up and
re-pack of the trailer to go...

Would like to thank the Aggies for another *outstanding* contribution - helping
cook, serve, wash up after (!!), dismantle tent and re-pack of trailer. We
could not do the weekend without their help, and it is *very* much appreciated.

The following people were largely responsible for getting all y'all fed -
Cammy and Vico Jones, Sean Vincent, Laura, Jocie Hooper, Eric Flint, Rob
Upchurch, and a host of choppers (too many to list), stirrers and last minute
shoppers (Ken Demarest)! I want to thank them for all their hard work, and
putting up with me being a miserable all Saturday! Oh, and Sam Marshall
for hauling the new trailer to and from TCR.

I have been chief cook and bottle washer for 10 TCRs now and the time has come
for me to hang up my spoon and apron, and pass the trailer keys to a new, more
enthusiastic, volunteer. It has been an interesting ride, but I need to enjoy
Paradise Canyon from the other side of the pot sometime.

If you have the desire to take this on - lead a team of enthusiastic volunteers
of your making, cooking food for your greater circle of friends, then please
get in touch asap and we'll pass on some wisdom before our old brains erase it.

So long, and thanks for all the chillies.

OK. BUT THERE ARE QUALITIES FOR CAVER STEW. IT IS A STEW. It is usually
concocted at the entrance to a car after a long and arduous caving trip.
Sometimes it gets eaten by sneaky dogs. Caver stew has certain elements. Fresh
onions. Noodles, cheese, mushroom soup, salt and pepper and other things to
make it wonderful.

I am self-employed and in theory, I could leave Houston at 5 p.m. today,
Thursday, and drive non-stop to Paradise Canyon in my luxurious 4x4 Sequoia.

However, that would be a very irresponsible thing to do, and a bad business
decision.( I get over half of my weekly jobs ) on Friday afternoon, and I
do not want my competitors getting my client, as I probably would never get
that client back.

That would also mean leaving Houston in hellacious traffic.

Also, I would have to charge the trip on plastic, and I haven't yet paid for my
NSS Convention trip.

Also, I might have to leave Paradise Canyon if a client calls.

Also, my estranged-wife is celebrating her 55th birthday at our house on
Saturday afternoon, and I have not yet decided if I am going to that. There
will be some hot drunk girls there from Tamaulipas, Mexico and Colombianas and
Argentinas, and more, so that is one reason to stay home.

But I do want to be at TCR as much as you all do.

I have not been swimming since the Waynesville, NSS Convention.

Chris has prior obligations and cannot bring the TCR shirts to Paradise Canyon.
Is there anyone in the Austin area, or passing through, able to pick up the two
boxes of shirts and see them to this years reunion? Wednesday is his best day
to do this. Please?

Greetings, cavers!

Join us at the UT Grotto meeting this week Wednesday to hear from Peter Sprouse

Subject: [Texascavers] sort-of NSS related

I imagine by now, Monday evening, that the attendees to the 2016 NSS Convention
are either safely home or back to work, or at their post-convention destination.

For me personally, getting back to work in the real world was both physically
and mentally challenging. I had symptoms similar to Regret Sex. Meaning, I
enjoyed it, but regret doing it.Had I accepted some cavers offers to stay
home for financial gain, I would have not missed work and could have easily
relaxed by the pool.

I am almost caught up at work with the task that I postponed. Everything
would be fine now, if my customers were not such a**holes, ( I have lost all
respect for attorneys ). All I have left to do is tedious bull-collecting,
meaning I finished all the deliveries that I postponed. That was mostly luck.

When I was leaving Houston for the trip 10 days ago, I was optimistic that I
would either pick up a caver along the way, or a Craigslist rideshare-rider.
I even tried to get cavers flying into Phoenix and Vegas to ride with me. And
even nudged one caver to drop work and to fly out to Vegas.

But that was all wasted effort.

I have rested up now, and I should be back to my normal grumpy self tomorrow.

It sounds like the convention was a success.I would have never believed
1,000 cavers would show up in Ely.Ely is a remote place. The nearest
Walmart Store was a 3 hour drive.

I could have easily spent a week in Ely in April or September. But not sure
if I would want to live there. I think it would have been like living in
Alpine, Texas, as far as being far from things. However, there was really
cool stuff within a 6 hour drive. I have no idea what life in Ely would be
like in the peak of winter, but I can only guess that it is harsh.

See you all in Rio Rancho in 2017.I hope I can fly to that, but will most
likely wait till the last minute and drive again.

I encourage young cavers to attend next year's convention. It is inspiring to
meet like-minded people who love caves, and the maps are so cool and the photos
and artwork are interesting. And there are usually unique opportunities to
go caving.

We have 4 rules: http://texascavers.com/rules.html

David hasn't broken any rules and no, he's older than me Bob.

I maintain the rules as list owner, that's it. I've always stated that this
list is self moderated. If you don't like a post that someone has sent out,
send them a private message if possible.

If you don't like the list and how it's run, anyone is free to step up and take

and go about enjoying your day. Personally, that's what I do.

I think it is the most bizarre thing I have scene all week, maybe all month.

Yesterday Galen Falgout and myself ventured into the aquifer to sample the

Jerry,

Thanks! I really appreciate your thoughtful response and the information. Some
of these steps I've been pursuing, but others are good insights that I haven't.
Sometimes, this issue just really frustrates me. It's good to know that other
people feel this way, too. However, it's sad to learn that this has been an
ongoing issue for such a long time. Most everybody that I have met & caved with
in our grotto and in the Texas caving community so far have been really solid
people who are enthusiastic about caving and open to helping those around them
enjoy the sport. I've learned from talking with some of these people though
that there is an undercurrent of frustration with some of the seeming cliquish
or closed off nature of cave access sometimes which discourages pursuit of the
sport. Since I have come to really love caving, I hate to see people get
discouraged, because of some sort of systemic problem. Anyways...Hopefully,
with the continued awesome work of organizations like TCMA, etc... and behind
the scenes work of individual cavers who are talking with landowners, more of
these Texas caves can be opened up to the Texas caving community at large via
grotto trips, etc...

Sincerely,

You are not alone; this has been an issue for decades. To find out about Texas
caves in general, I suggest getting the guidebook "The Caves and Karst of
Texas" which is available for $15 to TSA and NSS members from the Texas
Speleological Survey. Other county-specific publications on Texas caves are
available for free download from the TSS website.

To go caving, you have several options:
1.) Participate in TSA, TCMA, and TSS projects which are advertised on the
various Facebook pages and the TexasCavers listserve.
2.) Get the elder members of your grotto to coordinate more trips for the
members
3.) Mingle with folks at the TSA Convention and TCR that are involved with
caving in areas and caves that you are interested in
4.) Directly ask specific cave landowner contacts for a trip.

You probably will have to get out of your comfort zone a bit to get things
moving, but your interest and motivation will win the hearts and minds of your
fellow cavers.

Carl,

Very interesting article :) Thanks! Sounds like a cool cave I and others in our
grotto would love to explore!

I might be wrong in this, but it seems like to me there might be a number of
these types of cool caves. Caves that were very popular in past years, but for
some reason or another, currently, a lot of newer cavers never here about them
anymore or don't seem to have access. I completely understand the issue of
landowner relations that you brought up in your article. It's just kind of sad
to me that more grotto members don't have access or knowledge of a lot of these
caves. I really hope that we can move to increase knowledge and access to these
awesome caves. I'd love to explore them, and I know a lot of other newer cavers
would as well. I mean we regularly here about and plan trips to Robber Baron,
Whirlpool, Logan's, Airman's, now O-9 Well, and Deep & Punkin' which are
awesome! However, the same small slate of caves kind of get stale after a
while. But then Midnight and others are right there in Carta Valley, and the
majority of us can't get into them. Only a small group with special access
visits them. That also happens with Perry Water Cave, and a number of other
caves in Texas. However, when we take our yearly grotto trip up to TAG, even
though we're total outsiders, we can get permits and visit tons of outstanding
caves! I just wish that here in our home state it didn't feel so restricted,
and like some sort of back-channel type of system for individuals or grottos to
visit all the terrific caves our state has to offer. Thanks.

Are you going to be at NSS this year? I'd like to check out your book.

Yes, but not every virus causes problems with neural development in embryonic
cell cultures.

"Zika Virus Infects Human Cortical Neural Progenitors and Attenuates Their
Growth”
Tang, Hengli et al.
Cell Stem Cell , Volume 18 , Issue 5 , 587 - 590

For a freely available description of this research,

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/03/zika-virus-kills-developing-brain-cells

The very last sentence of this description sums up the problem rather well:

"Researchers also still need to figure out how the virus crosses the placenta
and infects the fetus directly, something most viruses can’t do.”

If the population of Brazil is 205 million, and roughly half the population is
female (~100 million), and of that only 50% is of childbearing age (50 million)
and only 5% of that number plans to have a child this year (2.5 million), and
1% of that number has children born with microcephaly, that would be 25,000
children, if all the mothers were infected with Zika virus.

Let that sink in: 25,000 children born with microcephaly.

So let’s assume instead that only 25% of the potential mothers are infected
with Zika virus and their babies have microcephaly. That would still mean 6,250
children born with microcephaly.

6,250 children born with so little neural tissue that they will never live
independently, and probably will not live very long lives.

According to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/microcephaly.html),

"Microcephaly is not a common condition. State birth defects tracking systems
have estimated that microcephaly ranges from 2 babies per 10,000 live births to
about 12 babies per 10,000 live births in the Unites States.”

That would be 0.02 - 0.12 % of live births in the U.S., a far smaller number
than 1%.

"Zika virus, named after a forest in Uganda where it was first isolated decades
ago, usually causes only mild symptoms in people, including fever and rash. But
after the virus started spreading across northeastern Brazil last year, doctors
there noticed a striking increase in the number of babies born with
microcephaly.”

This is exactly what epidemiologists are supposed to do, alert the medical
community to potential new health risks. Not all new viruses and pathogens are
as terrifyingly dangerous as Ebola, nor as relatively ho-hum as Lone Star
fever. One has a high risk of death and the other can be easily treated with
antibiotics.

Try telling a potential parent that Zika is something not to worry about and
see how far that argument gets you.

Re: [Texascavers] Join the NSS and Team 404

2016-05-11 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
The biggest faux pax that I see with "Team 404" is that no one Googled "Team
404" before deciding on the name (and found out that it is already in common
usage), or that if you just put in "404" you get links, etc. to the "Page not
found" error one gets when a server cannot deliver the page you just asked for
(See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_404).

All the tools... And no one uses them...

Bill Jackson is the NSS Fundraising Chairman. I passed along your concerns to
him, and his response is below.

(forwarded by Wm Shrewsbury)

Jerry, the emailed message from the Fundraising Chair reports the needs of your
Society. This one was to let everyone know we need donations earmarked for the
HQ property which we purchased nearly five years ago. Just like everything in
life, there are peaks and troughs in fundraising. We have had a recent trough
over the last six months and want to get it back to a peak, and with continuing
fundraising efforts to keep it up so that we can pay the mortgage ahead of
schedule and quit giving interest to a third party.

[blah blah blah]

In the meantime, we have our new HQ building that has to be refinanced by this
December. The less we have to refinance the better, of course, and thus this
appeal. We sure could use Team 404 members and grotto donations to help with
this.

Rather than "embarrass" our existing members, and further alienating those
peripheral grotto members that don't desire to be formally NSS affiliated, why
don't we share a bit of that embarrassment with the NSS leadership that decided
their going-in business model for paying off the new NSS headquarters would be
begging for donations from their membership. When that wisdom went south with
the financial downturn, our present strategy is to now shake the donor tree
even harder to the point of needing to embarrass existing members who don't
sign up fast enough, and to force non-NSS grotto members to sign up or leave
the grotto. Can you guys kick yourself in the ass any faster ?

This would be a good opportunity to bring up something that most grottos seem
to have a misunderstanding about. Numerous grottos believe that members don't
have to be NSS members unless they are in a leadership position in the grotto.
This is incorrect. This came up at the NSS Board of Governors meeting in Bend,
Oregon in March.

The rules are written so people can be grotto members and not be an NSS member
for up to a year. After that, they are expected to join the NSS or stop being a
grotto member.

Here it is the relevant snippet regarding IOs (Internal Organizations, i.e.
grottos, surveys, etc.):

5. The membership of IOs shall conform to the following requirements:

A. All persons who serve on the governing board of an IO must be a member of
the NSS except in the case of Surveys where representatives of state entities
or other conservation organizations may serve on the board regardless of their
NSS membership status.

B. Full membership in IOs shall be open only to embers of the NSS.

C. IOs may, at their option, have members who are not members of the NSS and
who are limited to a year or less on this status.

D. Membership in grottos (or chapters) shall consist of at least five members
of the NSS who have designated that grotto as their Primary Affiliation.

E. The formal name of a Student Grotto shall indicate that the organization
is a Student Grotto (or Chapter), etc.

Section C is the relevant section. So we should encourage grotto members to
become NSS members.

The NSS needs to raise money now to refinance the mortgage on its new office
building in Huntsville, Alabama. Please go on and be committed to caving if you
are a caver, and if you are not an NSS member, now's the time to join.

And if you are a NSS member, then join Team 404. I am a member of Team 404. If
404 cavers allow $25 a month to be directly withdrawn from their bank account,
the mortgage payment is met. All above that pays down the mortgage all the
sooner.

Tomorrow night I am giving the program at the DFW Grotto meeting. Before I do,
I'm going to read the above about being an NSS member and talk about the
benefits of membership. I may even paraphrase JFK and say, "Ask not what the
NSS can do for you, ask what you can do for the NSS." You can admit that caving
is a main interest of yours, become a member of the NSS, and join Team 404.
I'll ask for a show of hands of who is not an NSS member. And I'll frown at
those who are not.

Cavingly,

Bill Steele NSS 8072 (joined at age 16)

Re: [Texascavers] Tags for Rigging Anchors

2015-10-26 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
The bolting of caves in Yorkshire is provided/overseen by the CNCC. It is
funded by them (thru dues, I guess) and thru the sale of publications. See:

http://www.cncc.org.uk/anchors/index.php

With a geographically small area, unlike the US, it is possible to make this
happen. Before the program was instituted we did have an issue of over bolting
of some caves, but now-a-days this program is well received. Initially there
was some resistance but fortunately the founders pressed ahead and made it
happen.

Cheers,
Stefan

Such ID tags for anchors have been discussed many times over the years, but
I've never seen them implemented. I don't know why - probably too much trouble
to coordinate, produce and distribute such tags.

The circumstances where rigging tags would be useful are variable. In an
on-going project, there is usually enough institutional memory to know at least
roughly when anchors were set and how good they are. In all of the projects I
have been involved with in the last 20 years or so, we have adopted stainless
steel bolts, hangers and quick links. As long as stainless anchors are set
properly and kept tight, they last essentially forever. In these situations,
tags are not needed.

In popular sport caves, on the other hand, one typically has no idea where
anchors came from. This is the situation where some sort of ID would be most
useful, but unless one group took it upon themselves to rig and maintain
permanent anchors on specific routes, there would be no consistency or trust
engendered. This leads to bolt forests at pitch heads and rapid depletion of
optimal rigging sites.

In order to prevent such a proliferation of bolts, there has been a program
in England and perhaps elsewhere in Europe to install long glue-in anchors on
popular underground routes. These are well-publicized so that people know they
are reliable. Even then, I don't know whether or not they put ID tags on those
anchors. Another consideration is who pays for such anchors. They aren't cheap.

The reality is that no matter whether there is a tag or not, stainless,
glue-in or whatever, there will always be people who do not trust an anchor
they have no personal knowledge of. In caves with no access control, I think
bolt proliferation is likely inevitable, especially given that they are now so
easy to install with power drills.

[Texascavers] TCR food and the like...

Hi All,

Don't forget your cups, plates, bowls and cutlery for the big feed on Saturday!
This year's food theme (don't be scared) is Mexican; we haven't done that since
I started this in 2006.

If you are so inclined we could do with some help on Friday and Saturday with
prep work; we can bribe you with beer/cider for your help.

On Friday evening we will have a choice of "Chicken and sausage gumbo" and
"Cuban Pulled Pork", both with rice, available for a small donation to the
cook's trailer fund. Over the road you can drink wine with the Bexar Grotto.

On Facebook I started a count for the Friday food; about 70 people have signed
up. If you want to ensure we cook enough please can you "like" OR comment on
that post. OR, you can email me at mailto:stefan.crea...@arm.com . Please do
just ONE of the options.

If you are attending TCR next weekend please bear in mind that good folks are
volunteering for many things so you may enjoy the camaraderie. For instance,
John Schneider is providing a trailer of firewood for the hot tub and sauna.
However John is just one guy, who's doctor has directed him to do no heavy
lifting. He has a loaded trailer, he has asked for help to unload at Paradise
Canyon this Sunday and no one has stepped up to help. If I end up cancelling my
plans with my brother Sunday, I will, and I'll go help John, then I'll
rightfully claim that amount of time in the hot tub for myself whenever I want.
Perhaps Saturday night after the festivities I'll go claim my hour or two for
myself and everyone can stand around and wait for me to get my hot tub fix...

Anybody on the west side of San Antonio have some sleeping bag floor space for
a visiting caver the night of Wednesday Oct 14th? I'm flying in from
Hottubistan (Northern California) that afternoon, renting a car, and planning
on driving over to Paradise Canyon on Thursday. Would love to stay/visit with a
local caver(s) Wednesday night instead of the sterile Motel 6 option.

Underwater Potholer: A Cave Diver's Memoirs, by Duncan Price. Whittles
Publishing, Scotland, 2015. ISBN 978-184995-158-6. 6.5 by 9.5 inches, 185
pages, softbound. £18.99, $24.95.

"Cave diving is dangerous--do _not_ do it. Remember I told you so. Everything
else I say is bollocks!"

This book is a welcome addition to the small number of well-written cavers'
memoirs in English, most which have come from British cavers. Duncan Price has
had a long and active career in cave diving, and he has worked with pretty much
all of the other British cave divers I've ever heard of. Most of his diving has
been sump diving in the UK, especially in the part of it where w is a vowel.
But he has also laid new line in France and the US. Sometimes the blow-by-blows
of some of his more complicated sump dives get a bit tedious, but there are
flashes of understated humor or drama. Some cave maps can help with the
geography, but they are all grouped together as pages XI–XIX, apparently as an
afterthought. The sixteen unnumbered pages of color photos could have used a
lot of adjustment. But these production problems do not detract seriously from
enjoyment of the book.

Besides sump diving, which often includes difficult dry caving to reach the
sump, Price has done tri-mix diving, rebreather diving, and scooter diving,
despite the fact that his only formal training certification is from the
British Sub-Aqua Club--for snorkeling. A lot of cave divers will be amused, or
not, by a certain cavalier attitude about equipment. "One of my regulators
started free-flowing on account of the cold water even before I'd set off; I
hit it against a rock at the entrance until it stopped leaking and then headed
into the cave." He did a dive using a home-made rebreather borrowed from Rick
Stanton after receiving instruction in its use: breathe in, breathe out, add
gas as required.

Do _not_ do it, but do read it.—Bill Mixon

Re: [Texascavers] [TCR][2015]

2015-08-26 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
Diana, Sheryl,

The optimum time for dishwashing is actually *after* dinner. Cooking pots, etc.
are emptied into the serving vessels as late as possible, and then serving
vessels are emptied by hungry cavers. *That* is when there is lots of washing
up to be done.

It is best done that evening, before it has caked on overnight. In the morning
we really just want to pack up dry gear and go home, not wash the dishes and
wait for them to dry.

Cheers,
Stefan

Ps. That is not to say that we don't need people to wash stuff while we
prepare; just that the bulk of it is after dinner.

Howdy Cavers,

I just wanted to spread the word that Kiwi Sink in the Driftwood area has come
up for sale by owner. It is on two acres off of Billie Brooks Lane in Hays
County (amongst the small caver community there). The property has a fairly
large 4/2 mobile home, garage/barn and some other items. Kiwi Sink is a
somewhat significant recharge feature that local cavers have excavated over the
years to approximately 102.3m long and 17.5m deep. The owner hopes that cavers
can acquire it, but is putting it on the market and it will be open to anyone.
He has verbally mentioned an asking price of $167,000 for the property at this
time.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in purchasing the property and
cave, please let me know and I will get you in touch with the owner. Thanks!!

Why can't you people use petrol, it makes a nice distinction. Grr, two

Even without water PC is better than anyplace else without water. Actually, I
prefer Flat Creek at the all-around best site we ever had. It's still available
but needs to be reserved early.

One of the main criteria for a site is running water. Find 10 or 20 acres with
river (or creek) frontage and flat camping above the flood plain and I think
the rest can be faked.

I have never heard any public or private chatter about this cave except for the

My 2 cents is that

Kiwi Sink is a far more productive endeavor for cavers. I hope I can take

As the 2014 Texas Cavers Reunion approaches and we consider what to bring and
we look at our children and our dogs, please bear in mind the rules at TCR:
well behaved dogs and children are welcome provided they behave and someone
picks up after them if when they poop on the ground. Folks without children
and dogs, you are to tattle on those who are seen pooping on the ground. If
your little one needs to be on a leash please make it so, you know who you are.
If your little one is loud or a noisy yapper bear; in mind I will kidnap it and
dye it bright green.

Also PLEASE, let's be caretakers for the environment and pick up cigarette
butts and trash, we have a reputation to uphold of leaving a place cleaner than
we found it.

There will be caving available! Bring appropriate gear. Bring potable water and
shade too. Bring your musical instrument if you play one.
There won't really be electricity available, so don't count on finding that
sweet campsite next to an outlet, ain't happening. There will be generators for
the cooks and vendors, these will be subject to a curfew as we like, both,
electricity and quiet. Bring headlamps, I hate reminding Cavers about this,
but, well, there it is.

Be aware that Hwy. 281 is under construction between the Guadalupe River and
Highway 306. They've decided to divide that stretch and traffic changes at a
moments notice near the Spring Branch Road. DRIVE SLOW THROUGH SPRING BRANCH
on the TCR sites PLEASE.

I do this because you are an awesome bunch of people that I'm proud to know and
humbled that you let me do this. Safety first and let's be careful out there!

Hi David,

I'll ask my cousin next week when i'm at his wedding in Dundee. In your later
email you give the link to his caving summary (he is arb).

The above is assuming they let me into Scotland for his wedding, guess i'll
just go and see how they voted now...

Cheers,

My guess is that the political situation there will be largely

Sam's Club has a large supply of new Ammo boxes.

For $ $ 35 plus tax, you get a large box and a small box.

The large box is ideal for taking on camping trips to store things you want to
keep dry and away from sunlight or animals.

The small box can be used in big cave passage to haul filming equipment, or
First-Aid supplies, or sensitive scientific gear, etc.

But they come in handy for lots of other things. An experienced caver could
write a good article on all the things one can do with ammo cans and duct tape.

Keep one around the house with survival stuff in it, or use it as a piggy bank
to store large stacks of $ 100 bills, etc.

 Hi Bill,

Thank you for your critique on the Caver being a fairly decent effort at a

professional with 20 years of experience, I am always open to at least
listening to the opinions of others. After all, everyone has one. I should
listen to yours... That said, there is always room for improvement in any
endeavor. I certainly don’t think the caver is perfect so I'll have to
increase my fairly decent effort to something greater.

Regarding It's the editor's job to corral it; just sending out a plea for
material and waiting for it to magically appear doesn't cut it., perhaps you
will be willing to give me some guidance here rather than just an opinion. I
could work on my latent ESP potential and write directly to all the trip
leaders of the trips I haven’t been on or told about going on in Texas. Maybe
I could travel to caver's homes I have directly appealed to and sit them down
at their computers with my Glock? It is Texas after all... I should also be
scouring the internet on a daily basis looking for postings of anything that
could be related to Texas caving.

Finally, a sincere thank you for your support in trying to encourage cavers
to submit articles and for me to put out a better quality publication and
work harder at getting articles. If tips from 'How to win friends and

 Subject: [Texascavers] The Texas Caver

Now that the question of the Texas Caver has arisen once again, I am moved to
comment. I've largely kept quiet because I am in no position to volunteer to
be part of the solution. My armchair-caving time is already oversubscribed.

The Texas Caver has recently been a fairly decent effort at a picture
magazine, but where's the beef? The most recent issue (2013 #4) I've gotten
barely reaches an average of 300 words per page, not including in the average
the front and back covers, where one doesn't expect to find text. The Texas
Caver could easily contain two or three times as much material at no increase
in cost and still have enough photos, printed at reasonable sizes, to look
 good.

The Texas Caver should aspire to be a permanent record of everything about
Texas caves and caving. I've edited enough thousands of pages of newsletters
to know that layout is the easy and fun part of an editor's job, and getting
material is the hard part. I deplore the recent, on my time-scale, trend of
thinking one has documented his caving activities by posting things on
Facebook. (When I was little, I had to walk three miles through the snow to
get to the Internet, uphill both ways.) If that amuses you, fine, but your
Facebook or TexasCavers list posts do not end up in the NSS Library, the UT
Geology Library, or the USGS Library, all places the Texas Caver should be
going on paper. (Or to the Karst Information Portal digital archive, if
you're into that sort of thing.) I'll bet that even the Texas Speleological
Survey does not archive on paper such rare TexasCavers posts as are of
permanent value; I hope I'm wrong.

There is no shame in reprinting things that appeared on social media or
elsewhere in the web. Three of the feature articles in the latest AMCS
Activities Newsletter originated in blogs or the like, supplemented by
different or additional graphics, and some others are reprinted from various
places, again generally in somewhat different form. The people leading
various project such a Colorado Bend or Government Canyon have been good
about posting reports to the TexasCavers list. Why aren't they routinely
included in the Texas Caver as a permanent record? If a photo can be gotten
to go with one, fine, but if not, so what? A picture may be worth a thousand
words, but not if it hogs the space where a thousand words ought to have
appeared. Are there not some Texas grotto
