My first year training was at OFB, Muradnagar. (1954)
No tour of the factory was organised.
The factory production was 1000 lbs aircraft bombs and hand grenades. No bombs 
or grenades were being made in the factory. The two of us trainees from Minmet 
were confined to the chemical lab analysing coins.
Instead of converting to PSUs the ordinance factories should have been 
privatised

Know a little about the defence project buildings. 
My son in law is Director MEP in Alhuwalia,  the company that constructed the 
seven buildings plus automated multi storyed  garages building one each at the 
two locations. At one location there are four buildings and at the other 
location are three buildings. The reason for multi buildings was to save tree 
clusters. No fecal sewerage is generated. Potable water and compost are the 
products of sewage treatment plants. Used for horticulture and toilets. No rain 
water flows into the storm water drains. Discharged into ground water table 
after gravity mechanical filtration through bore holes. Solar panels are 
installed on all roofs to generate electricity.

Pak network in India

ATS of Delhi, ATS of UP and of Maharashtra have caught a network of Pak trained 
JIHADIS who wanted to carry out Bomb blasts during Navratri and Deepawali. 
Surprisingly all but one are from UP and Delhi.
Pak was creation of mostly UP and Bengali Muslims. 
They had been and are creating trouble to achieve GHAZWAI E HIND aided and 
abetted by parties whose only aim is to fill up pockets of Dynasts and 
followers. They have got a boost from recently expanded terror network of Pak, 
extended to Af.

How to deal with this problem? Any suggestions?

It was first visit of an elevated saint (Shankaracharya) to Rastrapati Bhavan.
Since President, Dr Kalam wanted to give due honour to the saint, he called me
(I was comptroller in President's House) to his office and asked me the
traditional protocol. I told him, I will receive the saint at the gate and
bring him inside. After few minutes of deep thinking, he asked me "what will
happen if I receive him?'
I said, sir, you will make saint honour above president. He smiled. He didn't
say anything. Then inside the office, I briefed him, "sir, I will bring him
here, put his seat (asan) on this sofa and will request him to sit and
president will continue sitting on his usual sofa chair." He again asked me,
"what will happen if I make him sit on my sofa seat?" I again said sir, you
will make saint's honour above president. Again he smiled and didn't give me
any direction.

After thirty minutes, when saint was to come, few seconds before, to my
surprise, I saw Dr Kalam, standing behind me at the gate. I immediately went
behind. He was there to receive the saint with garland and flowers. We received
the saint, walked through the corridors and straight entered into his office.
When I was spreading Saints seat (tiger skin asan) on the visitors sofa which
we had discussed, he directed me to put the same on his sofa chair. I was
shocked by this simple, humble and great gesture. *He was president Kalam.* We
offered fruits and flower basket to the saint.

After the mulakat (meeting) I asked him the reason behind doing this. He smiled
and said, *”I wanted the sofa seat of the president of India, get blessed by
the saints spiritual power so that who ever sits here later also gets the
Saints blessings".*

I admired my spiritual guru Kalam's these words and said "Sir, you are not only
a scientist but also a *saint in disguise too."* As usual he gave his
meaningful smile.

had been vaccinated ( by at least one dose ) in July 21. If one excluded these 
cases it can be safely presumed that *around 25 cases of asymptomatic 
infections  had been present for one symptomatic case*.
◆ Asymptomatic cases have contributed to Herd Immunity in a big manner. 
◆ however to wait for natural infection to occur to all individuals could be a 
costly affair as witnessed during Second wave.
◆ So prudent way forward would be to vaccinate masses for the life to return to 
Normal.

◆While the best vaccines are thought to be 95% effective, it would need  a 
coordinated campaign to stop a pandemic.
◆Vaccinating 70% to 85% of the population may enable a return to normalcy - 
Anthony Fauci.
◆India  needs a total of 225 crore doses to vaccinate about 80% population.
◆Having injected about 50 Crore doses as on 6th August 2021 India still needs 
~175 crore doses.
◆And at current rate of ~55 lakh doses per day India will take about a year to 
complete vaccination of  the significant population before the advise of mask 
removal and free travel can be given. So at it appears that a year from now 
◆ *15 August 2022 could be the day of freedom from Corona Pandemic for India*.

By Shashi Tharoor As an Indian schooled in the English language, I have long been fascinated by its different variants in use around the world—from the Singaporean “la” suffixed to every sentence to the Australian “G’day” prefixed to every greeting. But most compelling are the multiple differences between British and American English, the two languages fighting for dominance in the Anglophone world. In my first week on a US university campus, I asked an American where I could post a letter to my parents. “There's a bulletin board at the Student Center,” he replied, “but are you sure you want to post something so personal?” I soon learned that I needed to “mail” letters, not “post” them (even though in the US you mail them at the “post office”). In Britain, one concludes a restaurant meal by asking for the bill, and conceivably paying by cheque; in America, one asks for the check and pays with bills. What the Brits call chips are fries in America; what the Yanks call chips are crisps in Britain. An English friend of mine says he nearly had a heart attack on a flight in the US when the American pilot announced that the plane would be airborne “momentarily”. In British English, “momentarily” means “for a moment”, and he says he thought the pilot was suggesting an imminent crash after takeoff. In American English, however, “momentarily” means “in a moment”, and the pilot was merely appeasing the passengers. The plane took off, stayed aloft, my friend's heart stopped thudding, and he lived to tell the tale. But he understood the old adage that Britain and the US are countries divided by a common language. Anecdotes abound about the misunderstandings that arise when foreigners come to the US thinking that they know the language. In one anecdote, a young man, in the course of a passionate courtship, tells his American girlfriend, “I'll give you a ring tomorrow.” All he meant was that he would call her. But she understood him to have offered betrothal, and the relationship didn't survive the misunderstanding. Then there's the hotel that failed to understand an English guest who called to say he had left his “trousers in the wardrobe”. Translators had to be summoned before the hotel staff finally cottoned on: “Oh, you've left your pants in the closet. Why didn't you say so in the first place?” Sometimes you can get the right word but the wrong concept. Our former foreign minister, M.C. Chagla, once ruefully recounted the time he wanted to order a modest bite from room service in a New York hotel and requested sandwiches. “How many do you want?” Chagla was asked. Imagining delicate little triangles of thinly-sliced bread, he replied: “Oh, half-a-dozen should be enough.” Six sandwiches duly arrived, each about a foot long and four inches high. The language of politics is also not exempt from the politics of language. When a member of parliament in Britain “tables” a resolution, he puts it forward for debate and passage; when an American Congressman tables a resolution, he kills it off. A “moot” point is one the Englishman wants to argue; but if it's moot, the American considers it null and void. Such differences of usage reveal something of the nature of American society. It is no wonder, after all, that while the British “stand” for election, Americans “run” for office. A British linguist once told a New York audience that whereas a double negative could make a positive, there was no language in the world in which a double positive made a negative. A heckler put paid to his thesis in forthright American: “Yeah, right.” Yeah, right, indeed. With the universality of English largely a result of US global dominance, it's time for other English speakers to accept the American usage is winning worldwide. Even Indians are saying “elevator” and “apartment” rather than “lift” and “flat”. “Cookies” are supplanting “biscuits”. And as the Americans have taught the rest of us to say: that's O.K. In USA, the quantum of retirement pension after a certain base, depends upon the Income tax paid by the assessee in the years prior to eligibility for old age pension. Anybody who had studied at BHU or worked in HSL/Bokaro would have had occasion 
to have seen Sararsti Maa Puja but only those who had lived in Lahore would 
know about Basant.
 All women wearing yellow dresses, yellow sweets and best of all the grand 
finale of kite flying. The sky would be full of kites and Patangs, cutting each 
others DOUD (माझ) and manouvering for position to go under opponents माँझ to 
administer coup de grace. Unlike dofights of fighter aircraft where higher than 
opponent is advantageous, in kite flying getting under opponents माँझ is 
desired. I believe Gujrat has revived the practice of kite flying on Basant. 
Not attended one.

I reiterate, don't skip reading it. THE BHISHMA WAY   or  THE JATAYU WAY  -  Brilliant analysis!!  No two people respond to the same situation in a similar way.  Here are examples of two legendary personalities who were faced with a very similar situation, but their responses were diagonally apart.  This is a comparitive study between Bhishma and Jatayu.  Both, of them were confronted with character defining asssault on womanhood.  One chose to die protecting the victim while the other chose to be a mute spectator of the crime. 1) POWERFUL or POWERLESSBhishma was a powerful warrior and if he wanted, he could have stopped the disrobing of Draupadi - the Queen but he chose to be a silent witness of this act  whereas Jatayu was old and invalid and knew that in all probability, Ravana would kill him but still, he chose to try his best to protect Sita - the Queen.  Bhishma was powerful yet acted powerless whereas Jatayu was powerless yet acted powerful*.  "Real power is not about physical strength but about the deep desire to help." 2) ALIVE or DEAD Bhishma lived on but died everyday to his conscience whereas Jatayu died once but lived eternally true to his conscience.  "Our only constant companion is our concience - better to be true to it." 3) FAME or INFAMY Bhishma's name and fame went down in history because of this one act of not stopping the disrobing of Draupadi but Jatayu's name and fame went high in history because of his act of trying to save Sita. " We are all going to be mere names in history, sooner or later. Will we be equated with the bad or the good - is our choice." 4) CULTURE or VULTURE Bhishma was supposed to be a highly cultured human but acted highly insensitive and stooped low in values like a vulture, whereas  Jatayu was supposed to be a lowly uncultured vulture but acted highly sensitive and soared the skies in values like an evolved human. Who would you call as a human - Bhisma or Jatayu? "One doesn't become a human being by being born as a human - one becomes a human being by being a human." 5) SPOKEN or UNSPOKEN WORDS Draupadi begged and pleaded protection from Bhisma because she knew if someone could protect her it was only him but still Bhisma didn't protect her, whereas  Sita didn't even ask Jatayu for protection - she just wanted him to inform Rama about her kidnapping by Ravana because she knew Jatayu was not powerful but still Jatayu tried to protect Sita.  Bhishma being a human couldn't even understand the spoken words of Draupadi what to speak of understanding her unspoken words whereas Jatayu even though was a mere bird, understood not only the spoken words of Sita but also her unspoken words. "The language of heart is more powerful than the language of words." 6) CLARITY or CONFUSION Bhishma was confused regarding his Royal duty that he forgot that he had a higher duty - a moral duty whereas, Jatayu was so clear about his moral duty that no other duty was a consideration for him. "When caught up in dilemmas, best is to follow the higher principles - to follow our heart because it always knows the truth." 7) GOOD or BAD EXAMPLE Bhishma set a very bad precedent for generations to come  whereas, Jatayu set the most ideal precedent for generations to come.  "If we can't be a great example atleast let us not be a bad one." 8) RELATIVE or STRANGER Another interesting point is that Bhishma was an elderly relative of Draupadi but acted as a total stranger in this episode, whereas Jatayu was not at all related to Sita, he was a stranger but acted more than a dearest relative. "True relationships is based on heartly connections not just bodily connections."_ 9) THE SAINTLY or THE WICKED Both Bhishma and Jatayu had a few moments to decide what to do. No buck to be made on positive news!It is a reflection on our mentality. We do not talk of achievements but of failures. Hence news channels cater to negative and sensational news only. They prominently display CHOWKIDAR CHOR HAI slogan of RaGa. But do not talk about the turn around in DRDO and HAL. Long moribund projects like TEJAS (fighter), NAG(anti-tank missile) and ARJUN(heavy battle tank) have finally gone into production phase and that too at a furious phase. I was particularly galled by decades of delay in NAG as I had been associated with development of this missile. One reason for production not taking off is our fascination with anything foreign. Even bottled water should be imported from France with the name AVIAN. No commission for Defence Procurement Agency and Ministry of Defence. More so of our NETALOG and BABUS. Modi and his Ministers may be honest, but the BABUS are the same. Old habits die hard. GELATINE STICKS. The first is an explosive while the second is an edible sweet 
much consumed in Indo-Pacific region by children under various brand names.

They think their actions through before acting and stick to them too. They speak in coherence with their actions. In such a person, one can trust that he will do as he says and he says as he thinks. There is no hypocrisy. That evenness in these 3 faculties makes them noble.                                In reality, irrespective of being certified 'noble', such people lead a much more happier and peaceful life. Just keeps things simple for them as they do not have to keep track of 3 different things  Life suddenly seems more straight forward and untangled. The app released is only for Android. Still having teething troubles. 

Cited reports are picked up from the App itself.. Same App states that people 
in tens of lakhs have already availed services. Token time is 2.5 Mt’s and 
waiting time to consult at 10 AM was 9 Mt’s.

 Recently I had fever following pneumonia vaccine. To consult private Apollo 
hospital Doctor online paid Rs 1500. Had to wait 5 hours before appointment 
time for zoom meeting was given. Had to wait one hour at the appointed time 
before the Doctor appeared in person for two minutes consultation.
When we pay handsome money for consultation no protests. But crib when Govt 
doctor offers free consultation after waiting half an hour.

Bulk of them live in hovels. They share beds in shifts.
Nothing free for them like citizens
Electricity, water, education, medical aid, housing, food.
No voting rights.
Citizenship is never granted to immigrants, legal or illegal.
Immigrants cannot own a house or business. Can only be junior partners in a 
business.
Some houses in special areas are earmarked for purchase by foreigners. They 
have to pay for everything unlike citizens.
Same rule in all Arab countries. Even Maldives.

4. Mango tree wood.

The mango tree wood is not having inner/core  hard part called – 
Kathal in malayalam.  Normally it is used for fire wood purposes. 
However some mango tree grows wider. Its wood is used for temporary 
use of planks like base for RCC etc. in construction of buildings.

Though the planks are told not have much strength, still many use it 
for furniture etc. I was having a desk while studying in college made 
of mango wood. My father was having a cot whose planks were of mango 
tree in our compound. According to my father when the tree was cut, it 
had  more than 50 years of growth.  I have seen the plank in excellent 
condition for more than 40 years later also and sturdy. After my 
father my brother was using the cot.

5. Tamarind tree wood

Tamarind tree is very hard. Its trunk has hardened central area called 
kathal also. Maximum application of the wood is for firewood since it 
will last long for fire. Carpenters cannot work on the hard wood. The 
central kathal is used as hammer by putting handle by carpenters.

5a. Pitichhalum pitikkanam, pulimkombil pidikkanam (If you are going 
to hold a branch, it should be of tamarind tree)

The branches are so hard, even tender ones would  not break off from 
the tree. On account of this experts climbing tamarind tree to shake 
the tamarinds   to fall down even goes to somewhat lean branches also.

The saying is used to mean, if going to take support, it should be 
from the worthy. Specially it is told of marriages. If the bride is 
not so nice looking or not so much educated, the family should be rich 
and cultured and broad-minded .

Tamarind tree wood has also a tanginess taste. If we touch the outer 
skin , we feel it.

6. Bhatak (Tamilnadu)

I have not seen this wood in Kerala. It is almost dark red. This would 
is considered next to Teak wood. In many homes, the doors, windows are 
made using Bhatak. Some builders use it at least for pooja room. 
Bhatak too has a fragrant smell.

7. Forest trees.

Many trees grow in forest with good width and length. These are cut 
and used for many works. The merchants now a day designate such wood 
as forest wood. With suitable application of paints, polish etc they 
are durable.

8. Coconut and aracanut trees.

While the inner side is hard with other trees, for trees in the group 
of coconut species like palm tree, aracanut tree have their outer side 
hard. They grow taller without branching. On those days these outer of 
coconut and palm trees were used for building works like Utharam 
(beam), Kazhukkol, pattika etc.  However care is required for 
preventing whie/red termites eating them.

The outer wood of aracanut trees are very stronger, used as handle for 
agricultural tools like Koonthali (Hoe) , manvetti (_powrah)etc in 
Kerala. The alaku area of it (The most hard) is/ was used for windows 
bars. It is told they are harder than iron rods.

9. Deal wood or packing case wood

This is very tender wood of some trees. They are prepared with 
required thinness and purely used for temporary packing.

Some deal woods are found very good. These are used to pack costly 
equipment with sufficient thickness. After taking out the equipment 
many use these planks for furniture like cupboards. Stools, small 
tables etc.

9a. Packing case and my table.

Local carpenter made a table for me in 1967. It was using a wood 
called Venteak. A type of teak less costlier and less durable. When it 
has come to drawer, he had exhausted wood and used quality packing 
case for bottom of the drawer. After 45 years, still I use the table, 
though it has gone many changes like lamination on top, and for side 
door below drawer (I have confirmed the wood again now!!!)

My note- The deal wood drawer is still looks good.

10 Manja kadambu

In Tamilnadu it is one of the most favoured wood for building works 
and furniture works.

11. Bamboo

Certain species of woods have central shallow like the bamboo, eeara 
etc. They grow tall with less width and lean. Application goes mainly

Paper published in Financial Chronicle, Tuesday, April 21, 2015    Metallurgy  The two important sources for the History of Indian metallurgy are archaeological excavations and literary evidence.  Unique information related to metals and metallurgy is available in different Sanskrit texts beginning with Vedic texts to medieval and pre-modern texts.         The Rasaratnasamuchchaya described three types of ferrous materials, viz, munda, tiksnaand kanta.  When iron ore pieces are reduced by charcoal  in solid state, iron blocks containing  porosity results.  For this reason, the reduced iron blocks are also called sponge iron blocks.  Any useful products can only be obtained from this material after removing the residual porosity by hot forging.  The  hot forged sponge iron blocks are also termed as wrought iron.  Munda was wrought iron.  As the name suggests tiksna has superior hardness as compared to munda.  Tiksna represented crucible steel made by liquid metallurgy and also probably further carburised wrought iron.  Special  varieties of iron were called kanta.  An exciting example of wrought iron produced in ancient India is the World famous Delhi Iron Pillar.  It was erected in the present position in Delhi in the 5th Century AD by king Chandra Varman.  However, the engraved Sanskrit inscription suggests that it was probably brought here from elsewhere in the Gupta period.  The average composition (wt%) of the  wrought iron of the pillar is – Fe – 0.15 C – 0.05 Si – 0.05 Mn – 0.25 P – 0.005 Ni – 0.03 Cu – 0.02 N.  The most significant aspect of the pillar is that there is no sign of any corrosion, in spite of the fact that it has been exposed to the atmosphere for about 1,600 years.Another striking feature of the pillar is its manufacturing technology.  It was made by successive hot forging of directly reduced sponge iron blocks produced from the solid state reduction of iron ore by charcoal, in a die.  The joint lines that have not been completely removed by forging are clearly visible on the pillar.  This author discussed this aspect in detail and opined that this procedure is basically very similar to current metal powder forging techniques, with a difference that the latter is not usually used to make a long product by joining pieces together (Powder Metallurgy, 1990, 33 (2), 119).  In both the cases, hot forging in a die is done not only to give the required shape, but also to remove the residual porosity present in the starting material.    Indian crucible steel was a celebrated material worldwide.  It was usually produced by simultaneous carburisation and melting of wrought iron in closed crucibles.  Valmiki referred to it by the term “refined iron”.  Kautilya termed it vratta, because it was of circular shape.  Dr. Helenus Scott sent specimens of a variety of crucible steel, available in Mumbai area, to sir Joseph Banks, the then President of the Royal Society, London, for experimental investigation in 1794.  He referred to this steel as wootz in his letter.  Recent researches  by this author have revealed that the actual name of this steel was the Sanskrit utsa, which was erroneously transliterated in Roman Script as wootz by Scott.  James Stodart, fellow of the Royal Society, did extensive work on this steel and mastered its hot forging, Stodart was so overwhelmed with its quality that he mentioned this name utsa in Devanagari Script on his trade card, along with a note that it is to be preferred over the best steel in Europe.  It was named utsa because it had a characteristic of oozing out of low melting point liquid phase when heated to moderate temperatures.      The Mahabharata and some Puranas have referred to ferrous arrowheads, which were subjected to ‘tailadhauta’ treatment.  Valmiki used this terminology in the context of battle axe.  Some of the commentaries of Ramayana have defined tailadhauta as the process used for hardening (of ferrous objects).  Clearly, this terminology was used in the sense of oil quench-hardening of ferrous materials.  This is reflected in a hymn of Atharvaveda, in which, karmar (ironsmith or metalsmith in general) has been called manishi,ये धीवा॑नो रथका॒राः क॒र्मारा॒ ये म॑नी॒षिणः॑ । उ॒प॒स्तीन् प॑र्ण॒ मह्यं॒ त्वं सर्वा॑न् कृण्व॒भितो॒ जना॑न्॥६॥  [Atharvaveda, 3.5.6]  The hoax of 1200 BCE is the false reference cited by the British copied by the ignorant.  There are erroneous factors provided by the author is not avoided by quoting
