WindowStateStorage uses QtConcurrent::run with the default QThreadPool
to write in the SQLite database. But the functions passed are not
guaranteed to be executed if there is no available thread in the pool.

  Steps to reproduce reliably:
  1. Use a computer (or a VM) with only one CPU core
  2. Start any app
  3. Resize the app window
  4. Close the app
  5. Restart the same app

  Expected result:
After the app is restarted the window size is back to the size given by the
user.

  Current result:
After the app is restarted the window size is the default size.

However if unity8 is restarted the geometry is then correctly saved to
DB and correctly restored after the app is launched.

The actual dependency is:

> unity8-tests | unity-application-impl,

So in production environment it's qtdeclaratvie5-qtmir-plugin that
fulfils this dep, but I agree, this is left from when unity8-fakeenv was
still usable, and used, as a replacement for qtmir. Not really the case
any more.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1676826] Re: 7 digital scope doesn't play audio demos from store

2017-03-28 Thread Michał Sawicz
Media-hub shouldn't be required for stutter-less playback, we can't
preinstall the codec anyway.

We need to find out what triggers (or doesn't, in our case) the codec
check and hook it up to a trusted prompt.

  5. Play the ogg local music
  6. Play the mp3 local music
  7. Goto the 7d store and select an album and press play to demo one of the
tracks

  EXPECTED:
I expect all of the audio to just work

  ACTUAL:
The ogg plays however the mp3's don't, under unity7 this will trigger a
search for codecs but not in unity8.

  WORKAROUND:
sudo apt install media-hub gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3 then run
CORE_UBUNTU_MEDIA_SERVICE_VIDEO_SINK_NAME=mirsink
CORE_UBUNTU_MEDIA_SERVICE_AUDIO_SINK_NAME=pulsesink /usr/bin/media-hub-server &

You should now be able to play audio without stuttering or playback
  issues both locally and online.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1675448] Re: Unity 8 doesnt allow multiple mir connections in a single client

2017-03-27 Thread Michał Sawicz
Not a duplicate after all:

bschaefer, about bug #1675448 you say that SDL likes to probe the
display server, how would that affect launching an app? it drops the probing
connection and reconnects from scratch after deciding it's fine?
yeah, just need to politely mention we dont want to support that
and dont want to support anything mir related long term until we have 1.0
Saviq, soo with SDL2 (recently upstreamed and not released) and
SDL1.2
it probes if mir is around by simply attempting to connect to the
mir server
checks if its valid, releases the connection
then runs with the video driver which will re-connect to the display server
 in the same process
Saviq, theres not a good way to cache this connection as well (only
way would be a global variable MirConnection* which i would like to avoid 100%)
dandrader, you might want to have that in mind ↑ when looking at
multi-instance apps, bug #1675448 might not really be a duplicate after all
 Saviq, ack
I'm actually not sure how to solve that wrt. splash screens right now
'cause the first connection would be hooked up to the Application object
that's "waiting" for a connection, then that connection gets dropped and we get
a new one
so how do we differentiate that from a new instance altogether? I suppose
through UAL instances maybe?
 hmm
so we maintain a 1:1 mapping between UAL's instance and our
Application, and we collect multiple connections for the same instance under
the same Application object
Saviq, agreed it looks like a separate issue
 (that "duplicate "bug)
yeah i wasnt sure if it was
but if a connection releases it before a new one comes it *its closed* right?
and any connections after the release would be void
bschaefer, I suppose we can rely on UAL telling us when an application
instance is really gone
Saviq, that should be a way to do it (though not sure if its *easy*
to do)
does U8 only know about an application on the first mir_connection?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1675688] Re: Legacy app icons look poor/broken inside a rounded grey square

2017-03-24 Thread Michał Sawicz
The problem is our "modern" icons are just square, so if we don't shape
all of them, we'll get square items for all our icons.

That said, we could do away with the grey behind them indeed...

Related: bug #1673368.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1675692] Re: App drawer often refuses/ignores drag gestures

2017-03-24 Thread Michał Sawicz
Why are you dragging the drawer with mouse? You can invoke it with
pressing against the left edge, dismiss it with clicking outside it or
on any item inside, or Esc. Scroll with scroll wheel.

Dragging gestures are reserved to touch, and those, I believe, work
fine?

but this is not user friendly since humans will rarely drag perfectly
  vertically or horizontally.

launch kate native, hover the menu, click on the space between the
menu strings. should not be such a thing. the space between the
hitboxes should be 0 so you don't end up in situations like this

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1628589] Re: Need better session management for apps

2017-03-24 Thread Michał Sawicz
No, not a duplicate - bug 1671424 is about *not* signalling the
processes, but just closing the windows.

This bug is about quitting the whole app at once (not all its windows in
sequence) or force-quitting it for whatever reason (say, misbehaving
app).

With Unity8, an app is more than just the Mir client - it's the whole
group of processes managed through UAL/systemd.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1671424
qtmir destroys windows after requesting them to close

Currently, if a user closes an app using the 'X' button on the window,
many bad things can happen including data loss.

If a user is editing a document and accidentally hits the X while the
data is not saved, the user will not be prompted to save and the data
  will be lost.

Another example is Libertine helper apps can crash when Xmir is
  killed.

  2. Start any app
  3. Resize the app window

  5. Restart the same app

  Expected result:

  Current result:
After the app is restarted the window size is the default size.

However if unity8 is restarted the geometry is then correctly saved to

I don't see us respecting requests like "Always on top" coming from the
apps, better to handle that internally in the shell, allowing to keep
consistency between apps.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1674931] Re: Unity8 only available in English on Desktop

2017-03-23 Thread Michał Sawicz
After a bit of discourse:
* whatever language packs are preinstalled on ISOs need to include .mos for
whatever's on the ISO (unity8, ubuntu-system-settings etc.)
* system settings app needs to list all languages and install language packs
(and OSK layouts, if ubuntu-keyboard itself is installed?) on demand
* seems to me it would be easier/better to just get rid of langpacks :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1628589] Re: Need better session management for apps

2017-03-23 Thread Michał Sawicz
This actually affects all apps, not only Libertine ones.

We need UAL API to only send SIGTERM to the app (ideally only the main
PID, if possible), in case it wants to pop a "Do you want to save..."
dialog up. When that PID exits, we should also SIGTERM (and ultimately
SIGKILL) all remaining processes in the group.

Separately, we need a "kill" method that would do SIGTERM and ultimately
SIGKILL (or maybe SIGKILL directly, you asked to kill after all) the
whole group.

** Description changed:

- This is the master bug for better session management for Libertine X

Title:
Mir sending key repeat events continually to nested shell after VT
switch (causes Unity8 lockup for a while)

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Triaged
Status in mir package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in qtmir package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Steps:
  * log in to unity8
  * Ctrl+Alt+F* to a different vt, or log in to a different user session
  * go back to the unity8 vt

  Expected:
  * session is locked, but working

  Current:
  * unity8 starts spinning for a time proportional to the period it was inactive
  * if it was inactive long enough, it doesn't seem to recover at all

It seems it's "catching up" in some way, maybe with input, maybe frames.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1674263] Re: Window state storage should be using gu values rather than px

2017-03-21 Thread Michał Sawicz
Yes, float gu. The reason for that is restoring windows on a display
with different density. If we recall a window from GU=8 on a GU=16
screen, it will not be what you wanted.

In this scenario apps get told what size (and scale) they are, not the
other way around.

  Steps to reproduce:
  - open u-s-s
  - resize the window to 2 column mode
  - close the app with X from window control
  - restart the app

  Expected results:
  - u-s-s should open at the size it was last closed at

  Actutual results:
  - u-s-s window is smaller only showing one column

This may be related to limiting the max size which we used to have? I
think we should remove all max sizing restrictions on the app, and
bring back the maximize button which is not displayed either.
