Re: [Trisquel-users] libplist1 package verification error and dependency trap
Thanks for posting this problem because I get the same message for any repository app I attempt to install. So you are not alone with this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
I may not commit to another motherboard (not sure) but I am willing to promote the campaign via blogging and dropping comments in forums. Please keep us informed with price, urls and dates.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
Thanks Heather. What is #lgn ? My quick web-search revealed: https://libregamenight.xyz/ https://libregamewiki.org/Main_Page I wasn't aware of these sites, perhaps you have more urls you can share? And - oh for sure do not under-estimate gamers - because I believe gamers can Save the WORLD: Ask Jane McGonigal What Is “Gameful”? https://ronmamita.wordpress.com/2013/08/22/what-is-gameful/ Imagine playing the game of life like a awesome super-gamer; defeating the challenges to worldwide freedom FTW! That is the message I share with the youth and game developers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] raptor talos will make a lower priced mainboard, if you buy 10000
Hi Tonlee, > I am going to write Stallman an email about raptor's lower priced mainboard. I applaud your efforts and encourage you to write others as well in hopes of building interest for a advanced Libre platform. I often think about the momentum that comes from the gaming communities (developers/distributors/gamers/etc.) and wonder if Steam would have a comment or interest http://store.steampowered.com/curator/6981492-Best-Linux-Games/?appid=324260 I do not know if any gaming community has ever expressed specific support to FSF or the Libre concept, but I hope it happens and a powerful Libre computer available from major distributors could help. This FSF post: http://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2010/fall/the-free-game-lag is a bit dated and a recent state of the Free gaming report would be welcomed. I dream of freed game developers making amazing game changes and influencing how future generations imagine the freed world.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
Trisquel 7 is now my only O.S. I recently converted my Windows 7 PC to Trisquel 7 and purchased Libiquity’s Taurinus X200 Laptop running Trisquel 7. https://trisquel.info/en/forum/i-finally-did-it-%E2%80%93-i-evicted-microsoft I do not have any dual boots or virtual box, as I attempt to go cold turkey after evicting Microsuck's operating system. I find this a challenging learning experience - hopefully future devices will be liberated and more user friendly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to manipulate graphics settings from CLI?
I couldn't sit idle on this problem, so my internet search found: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Asus/X205TA That looks to address a similar problem or solution approach as I thought up; QUOTE: Configuration Display This is no longer necessary, starting with kernel version 4.1. Intel Graphics using i915 driver. X.org works flawlessly. It might be needed to manually force the brightness level, which seems to default to a very low value (390 out of a maximum of 7812). There are several ways to do this, but a simple solution is to add this line in /etc/sysfs.conf (make sure you have the package sysfsutils installed) : # Set brightness level, maximum is 7812, needed for Linux Kernel < 4.1 class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness = 5000 -END QUOTE- THE STORM WINDS HAVE ARRIVED - I'll log out and turn off/unplug my computer for protection. Ciao!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is This a Abrowser Bug?
YAY - I found a solution from a tutorial! 1) Enter "about:config" into the URL bar. 2) If you get a warning message about "This might void your warranty!" continue on. 3) Now, type "autoplay" into the search box. 4) This will bring up a preference named "media.autoplay.enabled." Double-click it so that the preference changes to False. And from what I see at my website it works!
[Trisquel-users] Is This a Abrowser Bug?
Every webpage on the internet that has a video or audio file will begin playing giving me a headache before I can mute the tab(s) - Even my website does this so this is not about annoying ads. The only other similar experience of this problem was when in "Firefox" [windows 7 OS] ads would autoplay; but this is different in Abrowser. I searched the https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/abrowser-help or https://trisquel.info/en/project/issues and I didn't find this problem listed. I have searched the Abrowser settings and haven't found a solution. I am wondering if this can be solved from the command line?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?
It crashed a couple of times on me already, I think it happens when I try to jump back & forward in the video. I may switch to VLC...
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to manipulate graphics settings from CLI?
I had thought to myself what will I do in this menu, days ago. The Color menu ("profile"?) displays a window with two columns: "Device" and "Calibration" Below device: "unknown - "STD HDMI TV" (AND below that is:) "STD HDMI TV" (selected button active) Below the "Calibration" is: "Uncalibrated" and below that is "Not specified" Because I do not know what to do with this, I haven't attempted to create a profile for my HDMI monitor (or TV).
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to manipulate graphics settings from CLI?
no, there is no brightness option to adjust. The "Brightness & Lock" menu only reveal: "Turn screen off when inactive for:" and "Lock" for user to select a task.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to manipulate graphics settings from CLI?
To: ADFENO, who wrote: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/i-finally-did-it-%E2%80%93-i-evicted-microsoft#comment-120522 I'm new to both GNU/Linux and TRISQUEL, I don't know anything about nouveau. Maybe my use of the command line to solve this problem was wrong? I simply failed to find any settings to alter from the "system settings", and the Abrowser preferences that addressed this problem when I looked. So, I'm asking the forum for guidance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Finally Did It – I Evicted Microsoft!
> "please share the how to change the colors/brightness for browser images. All images on the internet (including my blogs) are dark and black is too black bleeding into the rest of the image. Unless Trisquel disabled my Nvidia card that had controlled that?" I searched the features you commented on ("Brightness & Lock", and "Tweak Tool") but didn't know about "redshift" though screen temperature may not be relevant to this. I am confused... but I'll post it separately as a clear question.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Movie streaming/downloading with free software
Okay, then what is aMule better for than transmission? and I haven't (but I will) used transmission.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Movie streaming/downloading with free software
Hi Alij I'll add amule to my list of learning how to operate; I want a full featured torrent, thanks for sharing!
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Finally Did It – I Evicted Microsoft!
defenestration is the next stage if they return; or maybe defenestration is for the central bankers and their club-members who (like to upon giant phalluses disguised as skyscrappers) erect the tallest buildings for themselves. EOMA68, I searched for details and WOW-meee!!! Do you have a 3D printer too? Please share your EOMA68 unboxing and assembly or blog about the experiences - I am very interested. Wishing you success with your projects.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Finally Did It – I Evicted Microsoft!
The links wanted to install something automatically and the other wanted to redirect, I halted it to search for verbose details and found: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/ Themes, hmm interesting, but I'm confused how this would help me with altering the computers' graphics settings unless, for example: I chose Win7 theme clicked on the setting for graphics and altered my settings from there. But why do that, when there must be a way to accomplish the same from the CLI? Thanks for sharing I will archive it for consideration, there is sooo much I need to learn and explore.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What service do you recommend to replace OpenMailBox
This will be one more milestone decision choices I will make in my Trisquel adventure, I have no clue about mail serve standards and ask if a collaborative effort will be formed to create a side-by-side chart comparison of the available services that meet our standards? I imagine no one or two will fit all of our individual preferences, thus wouldn't it be a wonderful inclusion to the forum's documentation or maybe I should call it a "wiki"? Maybe, some of the members in the other groups (GNU, FSF, or other distros) can join the effort? I would like to see how that kind of collaboration works.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I Finally Did It – I Evicted Microsoft!
Hi pengnuin, I'm glad to meet you, do you have a blog? The small laptop is a bit difficult for me to operate (no finger-touch pad), I'm considering a USB mouse (or some other input device) and HDMI cord to connect to the big screen. But my old hybrid (more like a gaming machine) does all that now so I am mostly testing and learning from the old hybrid which I have a lot of Trisquel CLI to learn. That reminds me, please share the how to change the colors/brightness for browser images. All images on the internet (including my blogs) are dark and black is too black bleeding into the rest of the image. Unless Trisquel disabled my Nvidia card that had controlled that? Hmm... Hope to hear from you again.

[Trisquel-users] I Finally Did It – I Evicted Microsoft!
I blogged my unboxing Taurinus X200 at: https://ronmamita.wordpress.com/2017/09/05/i-finally-did-it-i-evicted-microsoft/ If you have difficulty accessing the wordpress.com server then you can read my unboxing comment here: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/13aug2017-buy-trisquel-laptop?page=2#comment-120336 If you are interested in the Taurinus X200, then send a message to with "referral" in the subject and the following information in the body: * Ronald's order number #196 * Ronald's name, and * Your order number. I wish to have Libiquity rebates to go to the next 4 Taurinus X200 purchasers rather than to me, if they agree. Soon after the setup of a fully freed computer running Trisquel, my hybrid system was trisquelled too. Strange how closely the separate events happened. I wish to thank everyone here in the forum for assisting and encouraging me. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Movie streaming/downloading with free software
I haven't seen a movie or tv show in years and I don't miss them. The new rules are in place to benefit a few narrow interests, at some point you have to decide when you have had too much intrusive dictates from the kakistocracy. I am amazed at how many activities became available when I gave up on corporate sponsored entertainment. The choice to read/watch/listen to a old story shared from someone's personal book/cd/dvd shelf belong to the individuals.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?
*Warning, VERBOSE mode initiating in 3.2.1... WOW-m!!! THAT WAS AWESOME terminal command line magic! I want to climb the walls and shout in joy. The commands executed (with 2 errors that auto-corrected by patch upgrade without user input) and finished with no unexpected information requiring a fix -YAY! I can scroll up and review all the executed commands, now this is what I call hands-on-the-job-training. I disliked da teletubbies but when I inserted a tutorial-video url it played flawlessly and I downloaded it too! Again without a flaw! Take me out to the ball game... I saw a homerun hit out of the ball-park - the crowd's thunderous cheers are deafening! More - more- command magic please :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?
Thanks SuperTramp83 - my terse speaking friend ;) Maybe one day I will comprehend forum speak and no longer require the verbose mode.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I apologize Magic Banana, for all the questions where not directed at you, and I appreciate your assistance, I have a lot to learn, really at every keystroke I am facing the unknown in trisquel. We can close out this thread and I think I will consult the pages and learn what I can. I didn't want to wear out your patience - thanks - you've helped me tremendously :) Sincerely, Ron
Re: [Trisquel-users] Webrowser Problem
I did not want to wait and play "tag" with this, therefor I toggled the javascript.enabled - even though it was in the "true" value before I altered anything. Now, I altered it to "false". It didn't solve the problem, so returned the value to "true" My attempts to post comment about this at the blockchain website failed. I wanted to mention this problem with the developer of: https://beta.chainbb.com/forum/chainbb-suggestions But my attempts fail. It is a membership blockchain forum so without a encrypted private key to sign in you can't comment. This is the 1st time I have failed to load pages or have features fail to execute - my comment remains in the box until I send it, then this error is displayed -quote: > "Error Submitting to the Blockchain Unknown Error, check View -> Devtools for more information. https://beta.chainbb.com/forum/chainbb-suggestions transaction.operations = comment,[object Object],comment_options,[object Object] cause: Symbol is not defined stack: u.static_variant/

[Trisquel-users] Webrowser Problem
I'm new to GNU/Linux Trisquel and was using dreaded proprietary OS with firefox, which functioned for this blockchain website: https://beta.chainbb.com/dtube/@frankbacon/vkaf04gg But now I'm using Abrowser and can't load many blockchain webpages... I invite all to share your solution.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
This confuses me after I installed SMTube: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-can-i-watch-youtube-videos#comment-120370 > "I'll have to learn how to operate the SMTube features - but why after launching it loads up Tonvid.com? What is Tonvid.com (uses something called Totem) and how do I get rid of it?" Then I found: ..."while trying to find the answer to my above question, I read this: https://sourceforge.net/p/smplayer/bugs/695/ > "smtube has essentially become a web browser that relies heavily upon Tonvid.com for its functionality. The problem is that it appears according to the terms of use found at Tonvid.com that it is not released under a free license making smtube heavily dependent upon non-free software which undermines those that wish to use it because it is free software." So doesn't this mean it is not "free" and I should remove it? Related to that, do you stop using youtube or do you have a app that searches and download youtube videos without going to the youtube.com url?"
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?

I'll have to learn how to operate the SMTube features - but why after launching it loads up Tonvid.com? What is Tonvid.com and how do I get rid of it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?
Thank you Magic Banana. Does smplayer download youtbe videos too? Yes, I read and didn't comprehend: "mpv url -> stream vid youtube-dl url -> download vid mps-youtube -> search, browse, play, download vids" What does that mean? how do you download videos?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Magic Banana, I now comprehend what you meant in your comment: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/13aug2017-buy-trisquel-laptop?page=1#comment-120344 > "And, again, less than 80 GiB for /home is very little: that partition should be larger (on another disk)." > "As I wrote earlier, it is simpler to reinstall Trisquel (and, then, probably the newer Linux-libre, like you have just done) setting up the proper partition for /home " The Gparted app is gone and it is simpler to use the version in the install app - as the partitions will be over written each time I run install. When I run install again - will I have to deal with the boot problem too? If so, is there a simpler way to avoid or remedy it rapidly? Even if the boot problem return during another install I now can use the solution you provided, but I haven't decided where to create the larger /home device I would like it to have a full 1TB because I archive a lot of audio/video and images that eats up available storage. As I consider this, perhaps the Laptop is best suited for Master control of My Home Network as it is the TRUE GNU/FSF spec. The network should connect or "share" devices so the new Taurinus laptop is an option to consider for /home , yes? And I haven't considered how to connect the other machines to the network or leave them outside to use the WiFi and proprietary products - any suggestions? - all are invited to comment. ^ I haven't looked into how to configure the home network - this is important and these two machines will be managing the network. This looks daunting at 1st glance with security, routers, IP addresses, firewalls, primary/alternate DNS and VPN-connections Is there a app or script that makes home network management simple to setup? Sadly, I am using unsecure AT ISP broadband, mainly because of their presence as other ISP's were not available - it has been awhile since I searched for competitors; do you have any suggestions for network apps and ISP? ^ What procedure(s) do you employ to search the internet securely? I don't see any Abrowser options for deleting cookies, - does that mean all cookies are auto deleted? Previously I had StartPage (IXQ) now I am attempting to get accustomed to duckduckGo but when I click the links isn't the browser dumped to the website without avoiding cookies and IP address?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I didn't cry when trisquel installed but I did go to sleep happy with a smile ;) Now to learn new habits with the terminal command line... Thanks for the encouragement and assistance everyone!
Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I watch youtube videos?
I'm new to Trisquel, is Smtube the same as SMPlayer? or do I have to update the package to find it on my new install?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Magic Banana, THANK YOU SO MUCH for solving my install problems! With the new Taurinus Laptop I simply closed the top-lid putting it to sleep and then connected the ethernet cable opened it up; as I look at the opposite pointing arrows icon for connected ethernet I see my wired connection and 5 WiFi signals available - two are under my control. I would like to set my home network but I'll have to read before I commit to changing the defaults atm. The clock is after midnight and I need some sleep - I hope to hear from you again even as I immerse myself into terminal commands. Gparted is no longer in my system settings and I need to move the /home partition to larger device... So the install saga is concluded and now my terminal command journey begins. I can sleep happy tonight - thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
YAY - Success!!! Your instructions executed and rebooted right into Trisquel "ron@GNU" ;) THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I note that Gparted is no longer in system settings. How do I install Gparted and how do I move the /user to larger device?

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
This is difficult to reply to, the ctrl+alt+F1 combo may have done something but it is hidden from the blank screen. I wish there was a option to always display command executing to the screen. I can avoid having to disrupt power supply to reboot with ctrlAltF1 repeatedly, then ctrl+Alt+Del and the F8 brings up the POST menu. always the GRUB halting Trisquel. What do you suggest next?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
MY LIBIQUITY LAPTOP! Arrived moments ago! My wife said it was delivered precariously halfway (inside/outside) our wall-mounted mailbox - the package is oversized for the mailbox and the U.S.P.S. mailman should have knocked on the front-door to hand deliver or placed it on the porch floor. If it had fallen from that height it would have damaged the laptop. Picture 1 The first thing I noticed was the box-package had a penetrated hole that has me thinking it went through rough handling during shipping. Picture 2 However, upon opening the box the added bubble wrap was a needed protective barrier in place, Yay! Picture 3 and 4 The laptop was in a sealed bag and docked. The three cables and power adapter were in separate bags. I did not find any instructions. Picture 5 All 5 contents are shown in this image or 6 contents if you separate the dock from the laptop which were shipped connected or docked. I forgot to include a small white envelope with 3 Libreboot stickers with the iconic leaping deer black-silhouette image. 1 ea. Taurinus X200; 8 GiB RAM; 1 TB HDD; 1 ea. Dock with CD/DVD Drive 1 ea. AC power adapter 1 ea. 5ft network patch cable 1 ea. 12inch adapter cable (not sure but maybe VGA) 1 ea. 12inch adapter cable (not sure, maybe a card reader) The laptop has some scratches on it but doesn't appear to be any noticeable damage. I am feeling like a klutz, having difficulty opening the laptop, where is the latch? Everything is black and challenging to determine which latch is for the dock and laptop after fumbling I got it to open -Yay! Plug it in and let's power it on! The green Trisquel desktop screen comes on with the system configuration menu. Oops the latop is auto connecting to the local WiFis in the area - how to power off? I push what appears to be the symbol for powerbut it doesn't power down so I close it hoping it will halt and go to sleep or power-off automatically. Move the laptop to the office where the ethernet and modem boxes are, plug in the ethernet cat6 cable, now open the laptop's lid and the sceen lights up showing ethernet connection to the internet. I will now go through the systgem configuration menu... Success!!! My first time seeing a logon box for "Ron" asking for password! Ok, the firs tasks I completed were change the screen background/wallpaper; sleepmode/powersaving; and settings for sound. While in the system settings GUI I noticed there is no Gparted app. I'll have to learn how to install packages and apps that I need. I see 160MB updated software is available for download, I'll start that now. Now I am in a happy mode, despite my unfinished project installing Trisquel on my old server-a/v blog work-horse. I thank everyone here on the forum and Libiquity for encouraging me to find a GNU computer distributer. Thank Libiquity for safely shipping it to me. Chat with you all again soon, cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
While this is an ongoing arduous project for me, I am learning - even if this is the hardway. But, I do see progress and what lies ahead is a learning experience (for an old man) that I look forward to sharing and helping others transition away from proprietary markets. Now, having experience the bad I can see why many individuals are not leaving proprietary. Additional help for the end-user would be welcomed - making installation and features easy to adjust to is something I ask the developers to consider introducing. That maybe some season tp come, as I understand that this is not a full-time career for most. I would like to chat with most of the develpers of libre software and devices (I hear about smartphones) coming soon or already on the market. Hear or read what they are doing and would like to do and share that. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
My wish is for us to chat frequently after I have my freed OS functioning, the command line will become my new habit to form ;) Less GUI and more terminal commands.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Heather, yes - the easiest option is to purchase GNU computers, and in so doing support the challenging efforts from the wonderful individuals developing free source products and services. I wish to see free source thrive worldwide. I use the phrase "free source" to counter the "open source" confusion. I like how "copyleft" counters "copyright" Once my Trisquel laptop arrives I'll have a lot of learning to do to get it operationally assisting me seamlessly in the background as I continue my efforts on the internet. The applications I am currently testing on the Triquel ISO USB stick are very basic and lack many of the end-user friendly features I have made a habit of using. Such as downloading videos from the firefox browser; blocking advertisements; ... As I consider this, Keeping my home network free may be more challenging (and expensive) than I thought. But I think the greatest value is in our freedom, which is priceless. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I agree, yes the 80GB /home is too small but I am not sure how to place /home somewhere eles with out overwriting and possible damaging another disk data - reconnecting the external HDD would have aprox. 500GB avail. However I am focused on learning how to solve my Trisquel boot problem. Oops, the attachments you requested are not in a file ext. this forum accepts. How best to convert a copy to a acceptable format? Disregard, I don't wish to play tag with this I will use Gedit copy/paste to copy as .txt files. NOTE: syslog use special characters that UTF-8 doesn't accept, so that may miss some code, if so You will have to explain how to clone/copy "syslog" for uploading as attachments. I'm willing to learn from the terminal command line.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thank you Magic Banana for the explanation, good to know. After Installation the same problem persists. GRUB menu displays for 3 seconds, then text flashes fast scroll and screen goes blank computer freeze where reset doesn't work and the physical electrical power has to be interrupted to return. What procedure do you suggest next?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Magic Banana, I looked at the sda1 from Gparted and was surprised - Gparted doesn't list a sda, so the feature is on the install script, I guess. Okay, I will run install and accept the boot default. I may allow the install "something else" optional script to also place the /home directory so that HOPEFULLY it will work and then, later, we can change the user's partition to a larger size after we confirm Trisquel boots successfully. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
ok, I followed your advice, the boot is default /dev/sda1 When GRUB 2.02 menu is up and I select Trisquel the screen goes blank and the computer pwr freeze (I have to disrupt power supply then turn power back on)... USB shows me that Trisquel is partitioned(23.76GB) /dev/sdb1 the home gui allows me to mount it but what do I do now? How can I get my computer to boot to Trisquel? Is there anything you want me to share with you, a image perhaps or text from the terminal?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi boba, thank you for the encouraging comment - I may cry when Trisquel OS eventually boots on my machine after this difficult install :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
AWESOME comment! Thanks Magic Banana, I'm still attempting how to complete the procedure you outlined here so the video was helpful for me actually "SEEING" this in action. With your assistance I am convinced I will have Trisquel running my server.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
This someone, as a new comer to GNU needs stress-calming dialogue, so thank you. That Grub program has begun to act like a real bug, preventing all OS access.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thu 31 Aug 2017 12:43:34 PM EDT I'm watching tutorial videos to learn how to install, then I will again launch install with the "something else" option to properly partition my devices. I didn't comprehend how to do this from Magic Banana's comments so the tutorials are helping me understand what Magic banana was instructing me to do. Magic Banana, if you read this I am attempting to follow your instructions (I would call them informational strategy to deploy because they include options rather than steps) - I wish to determine my steps. Step 1 -from the "something else" install option I will select the device /dev/sdb5 "linux-swap" to change the size? I am guessing, because I have 16GB ram. Then in the "Use as:" box option choose from the menu the "Ext4 journaling file system, click the check box for the "format the partition" option. then select the "Mount point" option. I did not know all the procedural steps with the various options to choose from, for each individual procedural step. The current tutorial I (paused it to comment here) watching is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPUVIc-W13s Then the other steps (for /home and to make the OS function properly) as required. Magic Banana, I must choose the devices to partition so I need to understand this, and I will have Gparted do this as you instructed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Heather, come on in! Don't just poke your head in, you are always welcome to comment and share freely :) Using the screwdriver now-a-days, means the task becomes a major project form me physically. So while not "impossible" it is unlikely for me to remove and insert devices. LOL, ha-ha the external TB drive I just installed for the current win7 clone that allowed me the peace of mind to go ahead with this Trisquel Install project was done after purchasing the external rack-kit to house my spare 1TB internal drive -that was meant to be installed internally ;) My Trisquel 7 installation saga contiues...

Greetings everyone, I want to offer a helpful request to the Trisquel developers (and all GNU distro developers), but not sure where to post it. My end-user experience has me wishing for this to be implemented: Please have Installation scripts run on the display screen for the end user to view the commands and procedures. Learning the OS is a IMPORTANT opportunity and this will assist in that. At minimum show the prcedure that will be executed with the major commands to be used as a static illustrative image. The installation is (in my opinion) the first and the most important task for the end user that may be new converts to the free source community. Thanks for all your wonderful efforts, cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 post install. ??? and new to free-software ???
Did I miss your point Owen? Why did you choose to use version 8 of Trisquel instead of version 7? You should not have any problem when using version 7.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thu 31 Aug 2017 10:10:19 AM EDT I'm using "gedit" to write text. buggy from the USB - gedit closed without warning and without saving! That is very bad! I am using gedit because I thought the culprit was "Abrowser", but apparently the malfunction is my computer's use of Trisquel from the USB... I am not sure, that is my guess, but the point is that I lost a lot of important text typed to you guys for help, and my re-type or re-do are not as good as the original. Moments ago it happened again, when gedit disappeared in the middle of this comment to you all. I am now typing and saving repeatedly until I send it. What I said in the earlier and now lost text to you is that I am having BIG PROBLEMS: I communicated that msg in a more low key manner without the frustration and caps. The points are: "The three partitions you created" should be 'the three partitions the installation script created'. Because, the partitions were created from behind the closed door where I could not see the script commands as they were executed. That is NOT ok. Not only does it miss the opportunity to share the commands and procedures to install Trisquel with me but it also installed Trisquel poorly. It is NOT ok, because the three partitions are of the wrong size and on the wrong devices. It is NOT ok because the three partitions are not accessible by me. It is NOT ok because I don't know how to reproduce those partitions myself. I lack the knowledge, and more specifically I require the specific procedures and commands at the terminal. The above explains my frustration and problem. To Magic Banana, I am attempting to follow your instructions (failing, but I haven't quit); at this moment what are you asking me to do specifically, step-by-step? 1. ron do this. 2. Then do this... 3. If that was successful, ron you should see this... Thanks everyone, I need your help on this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I decided to continue, All my sdb partition attempts failed - "NO ROOT FILE SYSTEM IS DEFINED" I then allowed the installation to install by erasing the partition when it finished installation and had my name and password this happened: Grub 2.04 or 2.somenumber - no operating system... enter name ron ... enter password ... nothing happened - then or now I forget but eventually the screen remained black... ctrl+alt+del doesn't reboot... pwr button doesn't work... I pulled the plug! Repeat - pulled the plug again - int. POST and went to the USB Trisquel then found the ethernet connection lost (reported disconnected but the cable is connected)... Yikes that was a long battle to reach the internet again. Below is an image of the installed Trisquel on sdb and I do not know what to do to get it operational. I guess the last option is to partition the sdb again - unless I have step-by-step guide detailing the installation procedure to completion. I haven't given in to defeat, but in needof some assistance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi everyone, I deleted windows 7 (the war scenario). I'm on EMERGENCY HOLD, more unexpected messages and confusion on my part. I typed this message the first time more eloquently and while everything was fresh in memory after I failed at the Installation, but then Abrowser froze as I was attempting to uplaod a screencapture with the comment and I had to reboot. Thus, this is a poor re-do. ***To Magic Banana: My attempt to install from Gparted failed as I did not find the install features after I partitioned (24GB)sdb2; however the Install icon is coveniently placed on the desktop- I launched install from there. I chose the "something else" install option with intention to partition as per: root partition 24GB sdb2; swap 16GB sdb3; user files (/home remaining GB)sdb4 - however the many options confused me. (ex: create partition: Primary or Logic or etc...; "swap area" or other options; mount point /boot; /home; or other options...) You see my confusion - too many options and what sequence? Please walk me through the proper sequence of steps and correct options to choose to installation complete.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Magic Banana, we are playing tag, I have dificulty being idle with the computer and usually go ahead and attempt to complete my objectives (the steps I outlined). I apologize if I confused you, probably because I am confused and not using the proper jargon to communicate. My thoughts have changed since begining this endeavor, at first I didn't consider this a battle of the OSs but I do now. That may be the wrong analogy but I am operating on that, so I decided to clone windows 7, then remove and replace it with Trisquel - my reason is because there is not enough disk space free to shrink windows drive and install trisquel or as you now explain there may be enough room if I partition different devices on different drives but that further confuses me and so that is where I am. So are you implying that I should not put Trisquel at sdb2 (where windows is now) because it will break something? I am thinking this is like removing the device (similar to taking out the C: drive, aka sdb2 and replacing it with a new device called sdb2 with Trisquel OS), does that make sense? If it doesn't work then I'll put back the clone as if it is the original and come up with a different strategy. here is what I've done, because we play tag and my actions are before your replies, we must be about a 6 hour differential?: Wed 30 Aug 2017 08:15:14 AM EDT I'm back in Trisquel 16GB USB stick. I deleted the 3 Trisquel partitions (sdj3,4,5). Now, my next step is to clone win7 to that external M: device - standby... An hour later, I have completed cloning the C: win7 drive to the M: external drive. Now test the backup by reboot, post int., boot from M: drive? I wish C: drive was disconnected, to be sure it isn't being accessed dispite my attempts to isolate it. If I am convinced the backup works, then I shall install Trisquel on the (/dev/sdb1 and sdb2)C: device. If I feel unsure about the backup I could clone the X: drive and install Trixquel on the X: drive. Let's go for the C: drive as the goal. Here is what I did: From uninstalled USB Trisquel the move option is greyed out so I used Gparted to copy/paste sdb2(C:win7 OS) to sdj3(M: ext drive); then I want to delete sdb2 and replace it with Trisquel OS... This may take a hour, looks like Gparted's copy/paste is like the clone utility. I'm doing this extra step as a added precaution and insurance to restore win7 if the Trisquel install procedure makes the win7 programs unusable. I'll return after that Yes this is my biggest risk, however I do have the files so a win7 system should be able to recover if I screwup. Wish me success.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Magic Banana, I haven't deleted Trisquel's install from sdj3,4,and 5 yet because I have a question and I'm preparing for sleep - can I simply properly prepare the entire device dev/sdj for future drive device? The sdj1 and sdj2 are not reliable full backup for windows and I wish to put a clone disk there as windows' reliable current backup. Wiping the entire disk for full 1TB use will be best, don;t you think? So do I "have to" delete each partition individually or can I do the ENTIRE device with all partitions at once? After I clone the win7 drive to the ext (/dev/sdj) drive then I wish to overwrite the win7 OS drive replacing it with Trisquel. My thoughts are getting foggy, not sure if I'm reasoning this properly. More later, I'm off to sleep.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi my GNU friends, I am facing the Trisquel GUI atm. I stopped taking my new prescription and feel better tonight, so let's get started. The mental gymnastics needed to quickly correlate the drivenames between windows and Trisquel is difficult, as far as I can see, there is no "sda2" - here is my attempt at mapping the drives for reference: C:=sdb2 #SDD fast-boot win7 OS D:=sda1 #Data 1TB HDD my orig workhorse drive nearly full E:=sdi1 #dvd/cd R/W K:=sdc2 #4TB HDD my current workhorse drive 1.2 TB free M:=sdj1-sdj5 #1TB external drive(converted a int HDD into ext kit)backup X:=sdd2 #250GB SSD full (quick access port/easy swap) The above drive map should help us; installation options are sdb[C:], sda[D:], sdc[K:], and/or possibly sdd[X:] I now consider a SDD OS my preferred option because of its many conveniences. More about that and the OS later. The Boot problem has first priority. GUIDING STEPS or baptism by fire: 1. Win7 OS Backup. This has been a new thorny problem for some unk reason and I might as well get rid of it before we move on to other actions. With no current backup as insurance should something go WRONG (w/ Trisquel and my ineptness what could go wrong?) RIGHT? Ahem - unwise procedure. I almost started win7 to format sdj (M: drive/device) My full-immersion-tutelage begins today because I feel you gals and guys have my back :) SO let's stay in the Trisquel environment and learn how to format the sdj1-5 devices! I require knowledge to have Gparted setup the sdj(ext M:) drive. We need to allow aprox 132GB for the win7 backup. If we leave it as it is it has 145GB. Then we can use a clone utility to backup the sdb(C:) drive with win7 OS to the (sdd)ext drive ***I do not know how Gparted operates so any instructions here are welcomed. 2. Boot repair or restore to functional mode. Reboot computer and verify windows 7 starts normally. In preparation to the next step, I shall review the windows backup, prior to moving on to step 3. 3. We shall continue the theme of FULL-IMMERSION-TUTELAGE by over-writing MICROSOFTS' VIRUS aka Windows 7 OS. I'm asking for your help, please from Trisquel shell, help me step-by-step install Trisquel as the primary boot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Magic Banana Ha-ha, I have a surprise for you! Earlier, You called something perfectly, PRECISELY what I should look for, that I missed. See my comment below.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi everyone, I am embarrassed to say how important something I forgot is. I totally forgot about something that I thought had no bearing on what we were attempting to do. Remember I had a unexpected result when I attempted to backup windows? Evidently, the external drive kit I assembled for the windows-backup connected by a USB remained connected when later I returned to attempt the Trisquel Install alongside Win7. WHY should that even matter? Because for some reason Trisquel wanted that newly partitioned drive for itself! Never mind that cramped C: drive alongside Windows. LOL, you can laugh at me, but I ask your forgiveness for forgetting to even reconnect the M: drive and include it in the search for the missing installed Trisquel. So the mystery of the lost Trisquel drive has been solved. My oh my - what a gaff on my part, and I am amazed by not realizing that just maybe I should reconnect all drives just to double check and search. That's the tale of my forgetfulness and ineptness. Trisquel is my lil' rascal from now on - I see it as a prankster :) Look at the images and doublecheck that Trisquel installed ("linux swap")itself on sdj4(23GB free)? But my folder claims 809.02GB free - LOL, ha-ha does that mean my Lil' rascal wants the entire drive, including other partitions? I am still at the step of getting boot to work properly. Can we take it step by step from the images of my files? Will passwords, partitioning, and upgrading packages be involved? Again, I do apologize for adding to our conundrum and not checking this drive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi heather I lost my edit additional comment - sigh so much typing in vain, I won't do it justice with my retry LOL Yes, I'm on a budget but I should be able to get additional hardware if needed, the laptop was the big expense. No worries, ignore my stated impatience, it is the idle hand syndrome when I'm in front of my computer with unsolved problems I start fidgeting to try out my ideas. If the laptop was already here I would have something to occupy my computer fixation with Trisquel. Besides, now that I know it is a battle of the OSs I shall not quit until microsoft is vanquished - even if I used the weapon of last resort to format the C: drive - that would be brutal. Ouch! -Break- Okay, this is to Magic Banana I had a long typed reply to you but it was lost to the internet transit. So this is the brief version, Gparted reports 5 devices (from top to bottom sequential order) the last is the USB 16GB Sandisk trisquel ISO image. I took detailed photos, take your leisure to make sense of them, hopefully they will give hint to a easy fix: /dev/sda1 model ATA ST...[931.51GB(94%)full 53.03GB free boot Label Data] {Pic1} /dev/sdb model ATA M...[sdb1 100MB(74%)FREE Label sys rsrvd] [sdb2 119GB(95%)used 5.83GB(5%)free no Label] {Pic2 and Pic3} /dev/sdc model model ATA ST...3.64TB[sdc1 unk 128MB msftres not mounted warning] [sdc2 ntfs 2.39TB(66%)used 1.24(34%)free mounted Label Jun2014] {Pic4 and Pic5} /dev/sdd [sdd1 14.36MB(7%)used 185.64MB(93%)free not mounted Label Backup Sys Rsrvd] [sdd2 232.68GB(100%) mounted Label Archive C Drv] {Pic6 and Pic7} /dev/sdi model Sandisk Cruzer Glide 14.61GB [sdi1 fat32 3GB(21%)used 11.59(79%)free boot lba(USB) mounted on cdrom Label UUI] {Pic8}
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Magic Banana I'll play with gparted to search all drives if I grasp how - thanks for patiently reminding me :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi happy_gnu, So, Trisquel installation deceived me; hmm Arc seems to thinks so too. Wow, even the OS is laughing at my ineptness, okay I can laugh too :) I should have considered that possibility, after Trisquel's install script asked me to input my user name and password then reboot and never asked for my password again or ofer my user name. Sounds plausible, so lets go with the premise that Trisquel failed to install. Here is my challenge: My 128 GB SDD is being held hostage by Microsoft, there is no room/free space for Trisquel to enter, and I don't have the tools at hand to fully remove the invader. OPTIONS: 1. WAIT for Trisquel laptop to arrive (feels like eternity)... 2. Get a helpful application to "safely" mirror the current state of the 128 GB SDD (archive has failed or is suspect at this stage). 3. FORCE the removal by reformatting the 128 GB SDD and installing Trisquel. I am influenced by recent battle experience against Win7 to attempt option #3, that would be brutally gratifying, BUT... I hesitate because the other drives are too important to me and I am uncertain if the data on those larger drives may be damaged or corrupted. There is a disturbing configuration with how the games on the other drives are installed with Win7 on the 128GB SDD - that is likely to cause them to not function. I could remove the 128GB SDD then install another drive and boot from the usb to install Trisquel. Maybe there is another option you gals and guys can offer?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi SuperTramp83 and Magic Banana I searched the internet to find the meaning of "chroot", too bad I can't put Win7 in jail ("chroot") if I am using the term correctly? Thanks everyone, this experience is akin to learning to swim by drowning - full Immersion - jump in I guess. But as you say, a learning experience. Anyway, I haven't decided what I will do right now, I'll pause to consider my options... PS: SuperTramp83, I didn't consider your comments rude, but internet chat culture is lost on me with most comments so terse that I often fail to grasp their meaning, and I know I am verbose in comparison to the culture I am not part of. Thank you, and everyone for the assistance - the saga is not over until microsoft's OS has been defeated by Trisquel ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
More unexpected crappiness: Screen reported: "BOOTMGR is missing" "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" That only repeats this cycle - no worky, so I did a POST interrupt with F8 key. What do we try next?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Magic Banana, as always I am "hoping" I didn't screw something up. I am acustomed to knowing what to expect but with Trisquel I am clueless and everything was unexpected. My USB pen is a 16GB or 128GB... Anyway, I am unsure where this "computer" trisquel displays is, I do not recall it from my other trisquel efforts. -Break- ***happy_gnu*** My impatience is showing again, I went ahead to the "computer" device thingy, then to Boot then to Grub and there I launched terminal. At the terminal I launched the boot repair sequence of commands and I'll show you the pics at the bottom. commands in terminal: 1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update 2. sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair 3. [click option] "Recommended Repair". Will this work - Ready for reboot and drumroll? Wish me success, bye for now...
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi everyone, I'm back! Hope you all don't give up on me, I have to battle medical issues and Computer OS stress had to take a number in the waiting line. I was pleased to read the comments, but I don't understand the buggy applications nor the GRUBby details - so back to invading Proprietary software camping on my property. Honestly, I had no clue this was a war for control of my computer - if I must, after my trisquel laptop arrives, I may simply erase the C: drive with Microsoft and be done with it :) Below are new photos from my USB pen, I noticed a 8GB "computer" icon that I mounted - I don't recall that before and really have no idea WHERE it is on my machine? So, please go slowly as I will eventually remove the microsoft vermin permanently, but for now remember that I have a Trisquel laptop due to arrive so I need the data disk drives for now that microsoft has control over. I'm with you from the Trisquel USB pen and I hope to do this most often until boot repair or some solution is reaached.
Re: [Trisquel-users] TALOS II Secure Workstation, from Raptor Engineering
So existing power supplies and sdd/hdd drives won't work? No compatibility - even more interesting and expensive - LOL, I may have to chuck all digital paperweights and return to pen & paper.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I'm back in win7, the grub failed to recognize commands. I'll reboot to the usb (not installed trisquel) - so you're requesting I go to the USB pen to execute terminal commands, I was told that would write to the usb pen... I don't understand where Trisquel installed itself, and where I should execute the commands - can't do it from grub, can't get to the HDD so that leaves only the "NOT Install" version on the usb - right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi happy_gnu I'm running Trisquel as "not installed" from the usb to comment here - Yay! If it is convenient for you, could we schedule a live trouble-shoot session? the screenshots are below, I do not see where Trisquel is "installed". I may choose one of the fix-options: Option 1. 1. set boot=(hd0,msdos6) 2. set prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub 3. insmod normal 4. normal Option 2. 1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update 2. sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair 3. [click option] "Recommended Repair". Because you shared option 2 I'll attempt that. When you return, please help me understand where Trisquel installed and "if" the boot repair worked what I should do next? I'm thinking the C: SSD drive is full and needs to be optimized for fast functions. Wish me success, my boot repair attempt shouldn't screwup anything? Thank you happy gnu
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Heather :) I'm finding it difficult to remain patient as I wish to have a fully functional Trisquel OS, your encouragement helps as I can walk away from the unfinished task and read your encouraging comment, thanks. I think the grub commands will work but I will wait to chat with someone experienced with grub rescue before I leap to another unexpected error message. I finally received a email from Libiquity - so I am looking forward to a real free source Trisquel machine :) I hadn't considered a unboxing, but I will share the unboxing as per your request when the Taurinus X200 laptop arrives, cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
GRUB TO MY RESCUE? 8 hours has passed since my last Trisquel screw-up. I read The GRUB list of command-line and menu entry commands https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Command_002dline-and-menu-entry-commands.html and watched several GRUB rescue video tutorials on youtube. I do not understand the commands and feel like I'm driving lost on the expressway without a city road-map for correct directions... The videos used/executed the same 4 commands: 1. set boot=(hd0,msdos6) 2. set prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub 3. insmod normal 4. normal I would try that, but I want to know what those commands are expected to do, before I type them. The videos all showed the menu comes up either to windows or Ubuntu.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Oops - I screwed something up! Sigh, I was more frustrated than I admitted to myself. Changed UEFI Boot settings to "fast Boot" DISABLED, but before that I also set the "USB Support" option to Full Initiation. The reason was because of the way the features work, when you select the DISABLE option for the Fast Boot the USB Support feature disappears! So I rebooted... I was already prepared to share this with you: Thanks happy_gnu, that mirrors my plan I set for myself, except I had hoped my Trisquel Laptop had arrived from Libiquity (Taurinus X200) by now, then I could feel more secure that my home network was running okay, and simultaneously become acquainted with Trisquel's Terminal. Recall my earlier comment, Quote: "So I went to the DOS cmd line and executed the command: wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:M: -include:C: -quiet Even that had a unexpected surprise for me. This text from the cmd line was unexpected, quote: Note: The list of volumes included for backup does not include all the volumes that contain operating system components. This backup cannot be used to perform a system recovery. However, you can recover other items if the destination media type supports it." -End Quote- Anyway, I was surprised that the reboot gave me the option to install Trisquel!!! I had intended on going back to windows and talk with you - but, this looked too interesting to ignore. I started the Trisquel installation and the option to install alongside windows was available again!!! I asked myself if I should ignore this and back out of the installation again, but I was too happy to ignore the opportunity. I went for it and after the long time to install Trisquel completed its script it asked me to reboot, I said yes and that reboot sent me Quote: "Error: no such device: b474831e-0d52"...[long char-string] "Entering rescue mode..." grub rescue> -End Quote- After about an hour of trial and error at the post interrupt I found a boot to launch windows (it wasn't my normal drive-and I don't understand why/how it worked). So now I have more questions: 1. after Trisquel installation how can I safely check to see if the Trisquel OS is functional? 2. What is GRUB command line? 3. What emergency commands can I launch at the GRUB command line? 4. What does that earlier DOS terminal backup caution mean? I am a bit over-stressed now, and will take a break from the PC; the image as per your request is below, Ciao for today.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No open FSF/GNU forum?
Hi happy_gnu, yes I know. I think the more the merrier and I do not run across FSF in most of my internet searches unless I specifically search for FSF or GNU. I even forgot that webpage (https://www.gnu.org/server/irc-rules.en.html), though now I recall I've seen it before, LOL :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] TALOS II Secure Workstation, from Raptor Engineering
IBM showed their evil intentions many times... Which has me curious about what they may potentially be hiding in firmware or CMOS?
Re: [Trisquel-users] TALOS II Secure Workstation, from Raptor Engineering
The cost factors in most things in this monetary empire system, so that is to be expected. I find this offering very interesting, because: 1. WHY (or what is the IBM connection)??? When did these corporations get interested in the free source movement? 2. > $2300 for a single CPU Talos II bundle, according to https://secure.raptorcs.com/content/TL2B01/purchase.html I could attempt to install it in my older model, using the existing equipment (monitor, casing, fan & PwrSupply) All to support the Free Source effort and have a Free Source home network.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No open FSF/GNU forum?
Hi Time4Tea I am a neophyte attempting to convert to GNU and I think your comment is important and valid even if this topic was discussed many times past. Years ago I gave up on converting my home network to GNU because my efforts to get Trisquel to work properly (hardware compatibility issues?) failed. Now I am attempting this again and asked the forum for assistance. Years ago, I didn't find the forum for help... and perhaps now some of us will provide "unofficial" IRC persistent FSF forum campaigning and discussions? After I have a GNU home network I will need a IRC host, and will look into this. In the meantime I encourage GNU supporters to do what you can to reach out beyond the already converted. https://ronmamita.wordpress.com/ https://steemit.com/@ronmamita
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
This is another good morning with storm clouds and rain, happy greetings to all! A pleasure meeting you Heather, your kind encouragement is appreciated :) I am Ron, "Mamita" is my mate - the combined user name became a nic from seasons past when I was coaching her to use the internet for the first time. I haven't bothered to use a different nic - oops I must remember to not be verbose, thanks Heather. 1a. I shall rid my home network of the Microsoft virus. 1b. Installing Trisquel is challenging but I haven't given up. each failure brings me closer to success. sharing images here in the forum even challenged me, LOL :D I thought all the supported image formats would include the UEFI's "Print Screen" feature, but sadly that was not the case. The UEFI image is .BMP and not supported here at the forum so I launched GIMP, changed the images to .PNG and then copied those new images to my K: drive so I could upload here to the forum. 1c. In honor of Heather I named the folder and here are more images we can discuss: The 1st image is as Heather requested, from the BOOT tab - note, that is a 2.5 page length of options. thus I took 3 screenshots to display them sequentially as "ASUS_UEFI_Boot_p1"; ...Boot_p2; ...Boot_p3; and the last image is from the UEFI's "Advanced" tab that includes options for USB - I think I attempted to alter some of those options, not sure as the UEFI has a script of its own that appears to have changed some of my requests in favor of what works best? That's why I tabled discussing the bios, it's confusing but the Win7 OS still works and the USB Trisquel Boot works, so that is progress. Now for me to get a reliable backup, then C: drive free space to invade with Trisquel...
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Magic Banana, your reply confuses me, quote: 'https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/install-trisquel-windows-dual-boot-0 details the procedure to follow when you do not see the option "Install Trisquel Alongside Windows [version]".' -End Quote- That is the guide I am following. When the guide states "Defragment your hard drive"... and select "Shrink Volume". Is where I ran into the above stated problem(s). I defragged and attempted to shrink and it failed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thanks happy_gnu ! I wrote down what I saw as the BIOS in earlier comment but I guess you mean the UEFI in charge of the ASUS motherboard? The UEFI has a screencapture feature and I attached the bitmap image file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
hi happy_gnu I'll be away from the internet tomorrow, but how do I send you images here?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Hi Magic Banana, I need help. Trisquel installation reported: "This computer currently has no detected operating system. What would you like to do?" Then 3 options, so I backed out of the install procedure fearing I would damage the Win7 OS. ***I'm on another internet search for help with Win7 backup errors*** My attempts to backup my Win7 computer failed (error code: 0x8007007b) 3x I tried different solutions. I wanted to have a backup so I could install Trisquel - I thought the backup needs to be done and would be safe enough, even though I wanted to wait for the arrival of my Trisquel Laptop. I Spent another frustrating day on failed attempts... I wish my Trisquel laptop was here already :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thanks Magic Banana Yes, I did attempt to "install Trisquel on the USB drive where the running live system is" - Okay, I won't do that again. Good to know. Apertium and other Apps in repository will be installed after Trisquel - I'll wait for the arrival of my Trisquel laptop, while I read bash tutorials, and the details from FSF to maintain my free source GNU Laptop. Staying away from SaaS and Mono requires awareness and intentional focus to form new computer habits. Thanks for the friendly support!

Thanks Magic Banana SaaS, I have a lot to learn and new habits to form, thanks for the reminder. I'm typing from Trisquel - Yay! I found what I was doing wrong. I was using the F2 function key when rebooting (not sure of the specific differences but this is my attempt to explain what happened) that took me to the ASUS AI BIOS? But when I reboot and used the F8 key it took me to the interrupted-POST BIOS menu with the option to select boot drive, when I changed that, the POST took me to the USB and Trisquel installation window. So I haven't installed Trisquel yet, because when I attempted installation more programming jargon confused me with options that don't match what I was looking for (to partition sandisk 16GB USB drive is not listed) for Trisquel installation - So I backed my way out and started over from the beginning. I chose to NOT install Trisquel. It (trisquel ISO image) runs from the sandisk 16GB USB memory stick. I think I will play around with this for now and hope I don't screw-up any of my Win 7 OS until after my Trisquel Laptop arrives and can safely work, knowing Trisquel (Laptop) is running properly. I'm learning slowly, more slowly than I would like, but it is progress. * Most of my typed text has red-underlines meaning everything is misspelled - lol I have to train trisquel - maybe trisquel thinks this is Spanish? * I searched for a multi language translation application and want to know what you think about CodePlex software: https://languagetranslator.codeplex.com/ Or do you have a FSF approved free source language translation app? Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
hi Magic Banana I used the webpage below as my guide to install pendrivelinux https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb I apologize for the above long story but all the details are there. I decided to park the original bios-settings issue for now, and focus on getting to the Trisquel bash command line from the USB. I don't speak French but I read your https://trisquel.info/fr/wiki/d%C3%A9marrer-un-syst%C3%A8me-live-installable using google translate. From what was translated I did all that was in your guide by my attempts to alter the BIOS (UEFI) to prioritize the USB. I am considering some alternatives, such as using virtualbox or similar app...
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
I don't have any computer running gnu/linux, sudo commands are out and I changed the BIOS settings several times trying to get the USB recognized first. The usb is already formated and readable. then I tried to make it a bootdrive with pendrivelinux.com I thought it worked (no errors reported) but no boot into Trisquel either. So are you suggesting another App to try again what pendrive did? I'm looking at https://rufus.akeo.ie/ and it reads: > "Rufus is about twice as fast as"... pendrive Yeah pendrive was slow but it worked (as far as I can see), I simply am unable to get the USB to get me into Trisquel. The 16GB USB is SanDisk Cruzer Glide fat32.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
4:53 PM 8/17/2017 I screwed up! I don't recall what I did last time I installed Trisquel (3 years ago) maybe I burned the ISO on a DVD disk. but I don't have that DVD now and my son has all my burnable DVDs so I can't make another. But, really I didn't think it would matter. I have the Trisquel ISO on my HDD, I'm all set, right? WRONG! I bought a USB 16 GB and copied the triquel ISO to it thinking I could use the USB memory stick. But there is no executable file and the reboot failed to stop at the plugin USB Trisquel ISO! This is where I went confused and stupid... Why didn't that work? Okay, maybe I need to change the BIOS boot to recognize the USB first! So I tried several changes to my ASUS AI command module (and frankly I don't remember the original settings after those efforts failed) - so that was a SHOCKER! Sigh, All the tutorial and the documents fail to explain how to step by step complete this. And I screwed up my BIOS settings... Well I'll park the bios settings for later, if ever - because the windows still works and I am too frustrated to focus on that atm. So I search the archives here at https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/ and found a method to create a LiveUSB by downloading Pen Drive Linux's USB Installer: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#button So another download, and install to burn the ISO image onto the USB - well I never... That ISO burn took a long time to setup the USB (I guess USB sticks are slow). Okay the USB still has over 12GB free space so looking good, now let's reboot. Drum-roll please, now for the moment of truth... Oh my, another monumental fail! I only wanted to get some hands on exp. with the shell and terminal before my Trisquel Laptop arrives. I was willing to ignore the internet (as stated above in the previous compatibility failure years ago) and simply practice with the command line and apps included on the ISO image. Now I have screwed up my custom BIOS setup and still can't run Trisquel. Sadly, I now have to ask for assistance installing Trisquel on my windows PC. Because trisquel will be on my home-network eventually this challenge must be faced (and hopefully Trisquel will manage my home network and OS shared on the other computers too) after I become proficient with the bash terminal - which is why I failed to wait for my laptop to arrive - I want to learn by typing at the command line. LOL, Ha-ha I apologize for the long story but I needed to get it off my chest. Please point me to the step by step USB installation that will work for me and my sandisk 16GB 2.0 USB memory stick and Windows 7 Home Premium ASUS BIOS 64bit desktop PC. It is okay to laugh, I simply have difficulty with Trisquel, but I wish to learn.
Re: [Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
Magic Banana, Yikes - nothing at all! LOL Ha-ha dangers of doing something foolish at the terminal... Moments ago I realized I can assist with torrent sharing, I'm downloading the 7.0 LTS Belenos torrent to help share. I wish I had thought of this earlier. I am glad to help torrent sharing when I am connected to the internet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
Magic Banana Hmm... Then this is explained as: > minimal prompt would be " $ " The default prompt looks something like: user@host:~$ as per http://write.flossmanuals.net/command-line/customisation/ I'll play around with that, but it sounds good - even if the laptop build has a messy prompt with user login name and host name of the computer for directories. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 is not old
LOL, Ha-ha so windows and macs were late to support USB3.0? Wow, I was out of the loop. Thanks Magic Banana for the APT Repository link.
Re: [Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
SuperTramp83 I watched a tutorial that had a very long cli - I think it included the computer name (very long), then something and the user name (again very long) where the prompt had to wrap around and down to the next line when the command, Arguments and Options were typed... From that I thought my laptop may ship with a computer name like Libiquity or "TaurinusX200" and my full name as a user, and there I am with the task of cleaning that messy prompt before doing anything on my new machine. Thanks for the resources I am off to read them now, cheers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 is not old
ADFENO what about USB 3.0 drivers/port compatibility? I'm awaiting the shipment of my Trisquel-7 laptop that has USB 2.0 ports and I want to use my 3.5 2TB HDD (internal) and looking on Amazon I see external enclosures with USB 3.0 ports (to charge laptops) and I'm concerned about compatibility problems. I don't know anything about Trisquel 7 but I think USB 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0 (or so I think that was the rule for windows). I don't know if new hardware is manufactured with the old USB 2.0 anymore.
Re: [Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
Magic Banana and SuperTramp83 I thank you both. I am looking forward to the arrival of my GNU-Trisquel-Laptop, meanwhile, I am watching youtube tutorials and reading documentation. I will do my best to be skilled at the command line. This old man is not too old to learn. I am concerned that I do not have a strategy for customizing my laptop to meet my needs, I lack the experience and data. I have noted on some tutorials the command line becomes too long with the path names; so I must have short user and directory names to not confuse myself (too easy to confuse me at the terminal). I've considered something like this would help me: 1. Name the master ROOT dir ? "GNU" or "TRISQ" 2. Mame myself as Administrator ? "Sysop" (sudo super-user privileges) 3. Name my user dir ? "Ron" or "RonMa" 4. Larger fonts to read text with my poor eyesight. Then there is the concern to practice the FSF guidelines to maintain and nurture the freedom platform that will be my machine and my goal. Thus, I am asking: How to insure the update will not install a non-fsf version? The repository may have FSF approved software, but what about when upgrading applications from the command line? Indeed I will play with at the terminal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
Hi SuperTramp83, thanks. I don't know anything about the command line, so I'll be searching for tutorials and manuals until I can have trisquel operating better than windows. This looks daunting at the moment. Where are the video sharing platforms and are there tutorials other than youtube?
[Trisquel-users] documentation has dead link
The Trisquel documentation page: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/working-files-and-folders has a dead link for nautilus manuel: http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/nautilus.html Is making this topic here inappropriate? I looked and wasn't sure.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
mason, okay will do - thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
Thanks Magic Banana, I've decided to buy a dedicated Trisquel laptop to get me immediately up and running. After gaining experience, the Trisquel cmd line and home network experience will hopefully encourage me to mod my old PC for Trisquel too. My long term goal is to make Windows a memory or only a rare visit for legacy software I own - like games. Ha-ha maybe a emulator or mod will work for that too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop
hi GNUbahn, thanks for the reply. Now my thoughts are going full circle - Ha-ha, I'm back to thinking I may feel more secure getting a warranty service fully functioning fully FSF/GNU Trisquel laptop ready to connect to my home network. I will chat with http://www.libiquity.com/
