This confuses me after I installed SMTube:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-can-i-watch-youtube-videos#comment-120370
> "I'll have to learn how to operate the SMTube features - but why after
launching it loads up Tonvid.com?

What is Tonvid.com (uses something called Totem) and how do I get rid of it?"

Then I found:

..."while trying to find the answer to my above question, I read this:
https://sourceforge.net/p/smplayer/bugs/695/
> "smtube has essentially become a web browser that relies heavily upon
Tonvid.com for its functionality. The problem is that it appears according to
the terms of use found at Tonvid.com that it is not released under a free
license making smtube heavily dependent upon non-free software which
undermines those that wish to use it because it is free software."

So doesn't this mean it is not "free" and I should remove it?

Related to that, do you stop using youtube or do you have a app that searches
and download youtube videos without going to the youtube.com url?"

Hi Magic Banana, I now comprehend what you meant in your comment:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/13aug2017-buy-trisquel-laptop?page=1#comment-120344
> "And, again, less than 80 GiB for /home is very little: that partition
should be larger (on another disk)."
> "As I wrote earlier, it is simpler to reinstall Trisquel (and, then,
probably the newer Linux-libre, like you have just done) setting up the
proper partition for /home "

The Gparted app is gone and it is simpler to use the version in the install
app - as the partitions will be over written each time I run install.

When I run install again - will I have to deal with the boot problem too?
If so, is there a simpler way to avoid or remedy it rapidly?

Even if the boot problem return during another install I now can use the
solution you provided, but I haven't decided where to create the larger /home
device I would like it to have a full 1TB because I archive a lot of
audio/video and images that eats up available storage.
As I consider this, perhaps the Laptop is best suited for Master control of
My Home Network as it is the TRUE GNU/FSF spec.
The network should connect or "share" devices so the new Taurinus laptop is
an option to consider for /home , yes?

And I haven't considered how to connect the other machines to the network or
leave them outside to use the WiFi and proprietary products - any
suggestions? - all are invited to comment.

^

I haven't looked into how to configure the home network - this is important
and these two machines will be managing the network.
This looks daunting at 1st glance with security, routers, IP addresses,
firewalls, primary/alternate DNS and VPN-connections

Is there a app or script that makes home network management simple to setup?

Sadly, I am using unsecure AT ISP broadband, mainly because of their
presence as other ISP's were not available - it has been awhile since I
searched for competitors; do you have any suggestions for network apps and
ISP?

^
What procedure(s) do you employ to search the internet securely?
I don't see any Abrowser options for deleting cookies, - does that mean all
cookies are auto deleted?
Previously I had StartPage (IXQ) now I am attempting to get accustomed to
duckduckGo but when I click the links isn't the browser dumped to the website
without avoiding cookies and IP address?

Magic Banana, THANK YOU SO MUCH for solving my install problems!

With the new Taurinus Laptop I simply closed the top-lid putting it to sleep
and then connected the ethernet cable opened it up; as I look at the opposite
pointing arrows icon for connected ethernet I see my wired connection and 5
WiFi signals available - two are under my control. I would like to set my
home network but I'll have to read before I commit to changing the defaults
atm. The clock is after midnight and I need some sleep - I hope to hear from
you again even as I immerse myself into terminal commands.

Gparted is no longer in my system settings and I need to move the /home

So the install saga is concluded and now my terminal command journey begins.
I can sleep happy tonight - thanks.

This is difficult to reply to, the ctrl+alt+F1 combo may have done something

I wish there was a option to always display command executing to the screen.

I can avoid having to disrupt power supply to reboot with ctrlAltF1

MY LIBIQUITY LAPTOP!

Arrived moments ago!

My wife said it was delivered precariously halfway (inside/outside) our
wall-mounted mailbox - the package is oversized for the mailbox and the
U.S.P.S. mailman should have knocked on the front-door to hand deliver or
placed it on the porch floor. If it had fallen from that height it would have
damaged the laptop.

Picture 1
The first thing I noticed was the box-package had a penetrated hole that has
me thinking it went through rough handling during shipping.

Picture 2
However, upon opening the box the added bubble wrap was a needed protective
barrier in place, Yay!

Picture 3 and 4
The laptop was in a sealed bag and docked.
The three cables and power adapter were in separate bags.
I did not find any instructions.

Picture 5
All 5 contents are shown in this image or 6 contents if you separate the dock
from the laptop which were shipped connected or docked. I forgot to include a
small white envelope with 3 Libreboot stickers with the iconic leaping deer
black-silhouette image.

1 ea. Taurinus X200; 8 GiB RAM; 1 TB HDD;
1 ea. Dock with CD/DVD Drive
1 ea. AC power adapter
1 ea. 5ft network patch cable
1 ea. 12inch adapter cable (not sure but maybe VGA)
1 ea. 12inch adapter cable (not sure, maybe a card reader)

The laptop has some scratches on it but doesn't appear to be any noticeable
damage.

I am feeling like a klutz, having difficulty opening the laptop, where is the
latch? Everything is black and challenging to determine which latch is for
the dock and laptop after fumbling I got it to open -Yay!

Plug it in and let's power it on!

The green Trisquel desktop screen comes on with the system configuration
menu.
Oops the latop is auto connecting to the local WiFis in the area - how to
power off?
I push what appears to be the symbol for powerbut it doesn't power down so I
close it hoping it will halt and go to sleep or power-off automatically.

Move the laptop to the office where the ethernet and modem boxes are, plug in
the ethernet cat6 cable, now open the laptop's lid and the sceen lights up
showing ethernet connection to the internet. I will now go through the
systgem configuration menu...

Success!!!

My first time seeing a logon box for "Ron" asking for password!
Ok, the firs tasks I completed were change the screen background/wallpaper;
sleepmode/powersaving; and settings for sound. While in the system settings
GUI I noticed there is no Gparted app. I'll have to learn how to install
packages and apps that I need. I see 160MB updated software is available for
download, I'll start that now.

Now I am in a happy mode, despite my unfinished project installing Trisquel
on my old server-a/v blog work-horse.
I thank everyone here on the forum and Libiquity for encouraging me to find a
GNU computer distributer.

Thank Libiquity for safely shipping it to me.

Chat with you all again soon, cheers!

I'm afraid I won't be of any help here, given all the competent people who
are already supporting you. Trisquel did boot from the live USB, did install
straight on my laptop and now always boots like a charm using only a 350-380
Mio of RAM in user session. Only a few resistant minor tweaks remain, which
have more to do with personal taste on details.

However, I had already been using some Debian derivatives for years so I
might have made some changes in the BIOS which may also have helped Trisquel
install and boot without any extra tweak. I mostly remember that I changed
the UEFI mode back and forth, but I am sure you have already received much
more precise advice.

You said: Such as downloading videos from the firefox browser

I said: I personally prefer to use the command line, but if you want to use
the browser, you will want to install an add-on called "Greasemonkey" and
then a script called "viewtube". You could also use a different browser
extension called "unplug". Sometimes one browser plug-in works better on a
specific video than another so there's no reason in the world why you can't
have all of them. They play nicely together.

You could also user a dedicated video browser called SMTube.

YouTube keeps changing things so it sometimes takes our developers a bit of
time to keep up with them, since most of them have day jobs, families, and
other responsibilities, but no, you do not have to give that convenience up
by any means.

You said: blocking advertisements

I said: What are advertisements? What does that have to do with the internet?

Unfortunately, those advertisements include scripts that are a major privacy
violation. When you patch up the security holes, the ads go away on their
own.

All of these plug-ins are things that you can start using today on your
firefox web browser. They are operating system agnostic. I have https
everywhere, privacy badger, and no-script on this browser.

Heather, yes - the easiest option is to purchase GNU computers, and in so
doing support the challenging efforts from the wonderful individuals
developing free source products and services.

I wish to see free source thrive worldwide.
I use the phrase "free source" to counter the "open source" confusion.
I like how "copyleft" counters "copyright"

Once my Trisquel laptop arrives I'll have a lot of learning to do to get it
operationally assisting me seamlessly in the background as I continue my
efforts on the internet.
The applications I am currently testing on the Triquel ISO USB stick are very
basic and lack many of the end-user friendly features I have made a habit of
using.
Such as downloading videos from the firefox browser; blocking advertisements;

As I consider this, Keeping my home network free may be more challenging (and

But I think the greatest value is in our freedom, which is priceless.

Okay, I will run install and accept the boot default.
I may allow the install "something else" optional script to also place the

the user's partition to a larger size after we confirm Trisquel boots
successfully.

I didn't comprehend how to do this from Magic Banana's comments so the

do.
Magic Banana, if you read this I am attempting to follow your instructions (I
would call them informational strategy to deploy because they include options
rather than steps) - I wish to determine my steps.

Step 1 -from the "something else" install option I will select the device
/dev/sdb5 "linux-swap" to change the size? I am guessing, because I have 16GB
ram. Then in the "Use as:" box option choose from the menu the "Ext4
journaling file system, click the check box for the "format the partition"
option. then select the "Mount point" option.

I did not know all the procedural steps with the various options to choose
from, for each individual procedural step.
The current tutorial I (paused it to comment here) watching is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPUVIc-W13s

Then the other steps (for /home and to make the OS function properly) as
required.

Magic Banana, I must choose the devices to partition so I need to understand
this, and I will have Gparted do this as you instructed.

I'm using "gedit" to write text.
buggy from the USB - gedit closed without warning and without saving!
That is very bad!
I am using gedit because I thought the culprit was "Abrowser", but apparently
the malfunction is my computer's use of Trisquel from the USB...
I am not sure, that is my guess, but the point is that I lost a lot of
important text typed to you guys for help, and my re-type or re-do are not as
good as the original.
Moments ago it happened again, when gedit disappeared in the middle of this
comment to you all.

I am now typing and saving repeatedly until I send it.

What I said in the earlier and now lost text to you is that I am having BIG
PROBLEMS:
I communicated that msg in a more low key manner without the frustration and
caps.

The points are:
"The three partitions you created" should be 'the three partitions the
installation script created'.
Because, the partitions were created from behind the closed door where I
could not see the script commands as they were executed.

That is NOT ok.
Not only does it miss the opportunity to share the commands and procedures to
install Trisquel with me but it also installed Trisquel poorly.
It is NOT ok, because the three partitions are of the wrong size and on the
wrong devices.

It is NOT ok because the three partitions are not accessible by me.
It is NOT ok because I don't know how to reproduce those partitions myself.

I lack the knowledge, and more specifically I require the specific procedures
and commands at the terminal.

The above explains my frustration and problem.
To Magic Banana, I am attempting to follow your instructions (failing, but I
haven't quit); at this moment what are you asking me to do specifically,
step-by-step?

1. ron do this.
2. Then do this...
3. If that was successful, ron you should see this...

Thanks everyone, I need your help on this.

I'm just going to poke my head in here one more time and hope I'm not
adding to the confusion.

I'm not sure how handy you are with a screwdriver, but I would suggest
removing everything. All your Windows drives, Data drives, absolutely
everything except the drive that you want to install Trisquel on.

You probably don't know that Gnu/Linux can boot from an external USB
drive. I didn't know this was unusual until I put a Win7 drive in an
enclose and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't boot.

Once you have a working Trisquel install, you can plug in the USB drives
and pick up your screwdriver to put the SATA drives back.

JMHO, of course.

Thus, this is a poor re-do.

***To Magic Banana:
My attempt to install from Gparted failed as I did not find the install

coveniently placed on the desktop- I launched install from there. I chose the
"something else" install option with intention to partition as per:
root partition 24GB sdb2; swap 16GB sdb3; user files (/home remaining GB)sdb4

You see my confusion - too many options and what sequence?

Hi Magic Banana, we are playing tag, I have dificulty being idle with the
computer and usually go ahead and attempt to complete my objectives (the
steps I outlined).
I apologize if I confused you, probably because I am confused and not using
the proper jargon to communicate.
My thoughts have changed since begining this endeavor, at first I didn't
consider this a battle of the OSs but I do now.
That may be the wrong analogy but I am operating on that, so I decided to
clone windows 7, then remove and replace it with Trisquel - my reason is
because there is not enough disk space free to shrink windows drive and
install trisquel or as you now explain there may be enough room if I
partition different devices on different drives but that further confuses me
and so that is where I am.
So are you implying that I should not put Trisquel at sdb2 (where windows is
now) because it will break something?
I am thinking this is like removing the device (similar to taking out the C:
drive, aka sdb2 and replacing it with a new device called sdb2 with Trisquel
OS), does that make sense?
If it doesn't work then I'll put back the clone as if it is the original and
come up with a different strategy.

here is what I've done, because we play tag and my actions are before your
replies, we must be about a 6 hour differential?:

Wed 30 Aug 2017 08:15:14 AM EDT
I'm back in Trisquel 16GB USB stick.
I deleted the 3 Trisquel partitions (sdj3,4,5).

Now, my next step is to clone win7 to that external M: device - standby...

An hour later, I have completed cloning the C: win7 drive to the M: external
drive.

Now test the backup by reboot, post int., boot from M: drive?
I wish C: drive was disconnected, to be sure it isn't being accessed dispite
my attempts to isolate it.
If I am convinced the backup works, then I shall install Trisquel on the
(/dev/sdb1 and sdb2)C: device.

If I feel unsure about the backup I could clone the X: drive and install
Trixquel on the X: drive.

Let's go for the C: drive as the goal.

Here is what I did:
From uninstalled USB Trisquel the move option is greyed out so I used Gparted
to copy/paste sdb2(C:win7 OS) to sdj3(M: ext drive); then I want to delete
sdb2 and replace it with Trisquel OS...

This may take a hour, looks like Gparted's copy/paste is like the clone
utility. I'm doing this extra step as a added precaution and insurance to
restore win7 if the Trisquel install procedure makes the win7 programs
unusable.

I'll return after that

Yes this is my biggest risk, however I do have the files so a win7 system
should be able to recover if I screwup.

Wish me success.

Magic Banana, I haven't deleted Trisquel's install from sdj3,4,and 5 yet
because I have a question and I'm preparing for sleep - can I simply properly
prepare the entire device dev/sdj for future drive device? The sdj1 and sdj2
are not reliable full backup for windows and I wish to put a clone disk there
as windows' reliable current backup. Wiping the entire disk for full 1TB use
will be best, don;t you think?
So do I "have to" delete each partition individually or can I do the ENTIRE
device with all partitions at once?

After I clone the win7 drive to the ext (/dev/sdj) drive then I wish to
overwrite the win7 OS drive replacing it with Trisquel. My thoughts are
getting foggy, not sure if I'm reasoning this properly.

More later, I'm off to sleep.

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-29 Thread blogstory

Hi my GNU friends, I am facing the Trisquel GUI atm.
I stopped taking my new prescription and feel better tonight, so let's get
started.

The mental gymnastics needed to quickly correlate the drivenames between
windows and Trisquel is difficult, as far as I can see, there is no "sda2" -
here is my attempt at mapping the drives for reference:

C:=sdb2 #SDD fast-boot win7 OS
D:=sda1 #Data 1TB HDD my orig workhorse drive nearly full
E:=sdi1 #dvd/cd R/W
K:=sdc2 #4TB HDD my current workhorse drive 1.2 TB free
M:=sdj1-sdj5 #1TB external drive(converted a int HDD into ext kit)backup
X:=sdd2 #250GB SSD full (quick access port/easy swap)

The above drive map should help us; installation options are sdb[C:],
sda[D:], sdc[K:], and/or possibly sdd[X:]
I now consider a SDD OS my preferred option because of its many conveniences.
More about that and the OS later.

The Boot problem has first priority.

GUIDING STEPS or baptism by fire:
1. Win7 OS Backup. This has been a new thorny problem for some unk reason and
I might as well get rid of it before we move on to other actions. With no
current backup as insurance should something go WRONG (w/ Trisquel and my
ineptness what could go wrong?) RIGHT? Ahem - unwise procedure.
I almost started win7 to format sdj (M: drive/device) My
full-immersion-tutelage begins today because I feel you gals and guys have my
back :) SO let's stay in the Trisquel environment and learn how to format the
sdj1-5 devices!
I require knowledge to have Gparted setup the sdj(ext M:) drive. We need to
allow aprox 132GB for the win7 backup. If we leave it as it is it has 145GB.
Then we can use a clone utility to backup the sdb(C:) drive with win7 OS to
the (sdd)ext drive

***I do not know how Gparted operates so any instructions here are welcomed.

2. Boot repair or restore to functional mode.
Reboot computer and verify windows 7 starts normally.
In preparation to the next step, I shall review the windows backup, prior to
moving on to step 3.

3. We shall continue the theme of FULL-IMMERSION-TUTELAGE by over-writing
MICROSOFTS' VIRUS aka Windows 7 OS.
I'm asking for your help, please from Trisquel shell, help me step-by-step
install Trisquel as the primary boot.

Hi everyone, I am embarrassed to say how important something I forgot is.
I totally forgot about something that I thought had no bearing on what we
were attempting to do.

Remember I had a unexpected result when I attempted to backup windows?
Evidently, the external drive kit I assembled for the windows-backup
connected by a USB remained connected when later I returned to attempt the
Trisquel Install alongside Win7.

WHY should that even matter?
Because for some reason Trisquel wanted that newly partitioned drive for
itself!

Never mind that cramped C: drive alongside Windows.
LOL, you can laugh at me, but I ask your forgiveness for forgetting to even
reconnect the M: drive and include it in the search for the missing installed
Trisquel.

So the mystery of the lost Trisquel drive has been solved.
My oh my - what a gaff on my part, and I am amazed by not realizing that just
maybe I should reconnect all drives just to double check and search.

That's the tale of my forgetfulness and ineptness.
Trisquel is my lil' rascal from now on - I see it as a prankster :)

Look at the images and doublecheck that Trisquel installed ("linux
swap")itself on sdj4(23GB free)?
But my folder claims 809.02GB free - LOL, ha-ha does that mean my Lil' rascal
wants the entire drive, including other partitions?

I am still at the step of getting boot to work properly.
Can we take it step by step from the images of my files?
Will passwords, partitioning, and upgrading packages be involved?

Again, I do apologize for adding to our conundrum and not checking this
drive.

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-28 Thread happy_gnu

If you really don't want to lose your windows partition that is fine.

If you have the money you can buy a clean HDD or SDD and put trisquel there.

I kinda don't want you to because I see you have 2 HDD and one SSD and space
more than enough.

But you said those disks are important and I understand and respect that. So
at the end I would incline for you to buy a new disk.
That way you won't risk losing any data and can have a safe trisquel
installation.

Hang in there, Ron; you're doing great. My advice with the i7 would be
not to stress out over a small outlay of cash (I picked up some used 80
gig drives for my kids for $10 and can usually find 160 gig refurbished
for $20) for the huge peace of mind of knowing that your data is safe
and sound in an antistatic bag in the back of your closet.

I don't know your financial situation so I have no way of knowing what
that "small outlay of cash" would be for you, of course. $10 can be food
out of some people's kids' mouths and no offense intended to anyone of
any socioeconomic situation.

You may or may not table the i7 when the Taurinus gets here, so do keep
that in mind. You mentioned upthread that you have health issues and a
wife, both of which need to be prioritized over computers.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. I personally got rid of microsoft in
2005, got rid of non-free software in 2011ish, and am still trying to
clean up family and close friends' machines.

Please don't stress over verboseness. We all know you are trying to
squish a talent into a foreign culture. Putting your own experiences
into the printed word is going to give you the material to write some
wonderful documentation someday.

That will save us boardies the time and boredom of writing the same
posts over and over again to help other newcomers who could not find
answers in the wiki or by searching the existing posts of the forum.

Hi happy_gnu,
So, Trisquel installation deceived me; hmm Arc seems to thinks so too.
Wow, even the OS is laughing at my ineptness, okay I can laugh too :)
I should have considered that possibility, after Trisquel's install script
asked me to input my user name and password then reboot and never asked for
my password again or ofer my user name.
Sounds plausible, so lets go with the premise that Trisquel failed to
install.

Here is my challenge:
My 128 GB SDD is being held hostage by Microsoft, there is no room/free space
for Trisquel to enter, and I don't have the tools at hand to fully remove the
invader.

OPTIONS:
1. WAIT for Trisquel laptop to arrive (feels like eternity)...
2. Get a helpful application to "safely" mirror the current state of the 128
GB SDD (archive has failed or is suspect at this stage).

3. FORCE the removal by reformatting the 128 GB SDD and installing Trisquel.

I am influenced by recent battle experience against Win7 to attempt option
#3, that would be brutally gratifying, BUT...

I hesitate because the other drives are too important to me and I am
uncertain if the data on those larger drives may be damaged or corrupted.
There is a disturbing configuration with how the games on the other drives
are installed with Win7 on the 128GB SDD - that is likely to cause them to
not function.
I could remove the 128GB SDD then install another drive and boot from the usb
to install Trisquel.

Maybe there is another option you gals and guys can offer?

2017-08-28 Thread arc
That is usually what shows up when there is no bootloader. Looking at the
previous screenshots, I don't think your attempt to install Trisquel was even
successful, as there seems to be no partition on your desired drive or any of
them that could be holding it. That is why, earlier, GRUB gave you the
"Error: no such device." GRUB was fine all along and just couldn't find the
non-existent Trisquel. And I am guessing the grub-repair somehow got rid of
GRUB.

As for why Trisquel didn't actually install, I think it is because the target
drive, that 128GB drive, is almost full, if I am looking at the screenshots
correctly. If you can get some of your data off of it, maybe around 30GB
worth, the automatic "Install alongside Windows" option would probably work
fine.

As for why it LOOKED like it installed successfully and actually didn't...
who knows! In essence, you are back to square one.

forgetting about Windows for good :)

Grub repair from my experience is just garbage. On some UEFI laptops, the
recent ones, there is no legacy mode and there is no way of installing
anything really other than Windows and this is by design. I had one similar
experience with a mate's laptop. I have spent countless hours reading and
tinkering to no avail. Basically each time the installation would go just
fine and then will just freeze completely while attempting to install grub,
laptop completely frozen, dead, only cold reboot to see again a screen saying
me something like 'no boot device'. Acer, which we contacted back then, said
we should have updated the BIOS for the one version we had had indeed a 'bug'
(no bug at all if you ask me but by design and on purpose feature) that would
prevent in fact the installation of anything in there.

Long story short (talk about being verbose) I think the only thing you can do
is boot the damn thing with **refind**

I would try that, but I want to know what those commands are expected to do,

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-25 Thread blogstory

Oops - I screwed something up!

Sigh, I was more frustrated than I admitted to myself.
Changed UEFI Boot settings to "fast Boot" DISABLED, but before that I also
set the "USB Support" option to Full Initiation.
The reason was because of the way the features work, when you select the
DISABLE option for the Fast Boot the USB Support feature disappears!

So I rebooted...

I was already prepared to share this with you:
Thanks happy_gnu, that mirrors my plan I set for myself, except I had hoped
my Trisquel Laptop had arrived from Libiquity (Taurinus X200) by now, then I
could feel more secure that my home network was running okay, and
simultaneously become acquainted with Trisquel's Terminal.

Recall my earlier comment, Quote:
"So I went to the DOS cmd line and executed the command:
wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:M: -include:C: -quiet

Even that had a unexpected surprise for me.
This text from the cmd line was unexpected, quote:
Note: The list of volumes included for backup does not include all the
volumes that contain operating system components. This backup cannot be used
to perform a system recovery. However, you can recover other items if the
destination media type supports it."

-End Quote-

Anyway, I was surprised that the reboot gave me the option to install
Trisquel!!!
I had intended on going back to windows and talk with you - but, this looked
too interesting to ignore. I started the Trisquel installation and the option
to install alongside windows was available again!!!
I asked myself if I should ignore this and back out of the installation
again, but I was too happy to ignore the opportunity. I went for it and after
the long time to install Trisquel completed its script it asked me to reboot,
I said yes and that reboot sent me Quote:

"Error: no such device: b474831e-0d52"...[long char-string]
"Entering rescue mode..."
grub rescue>
-End Quote-
After about an hour of trial and error at the post interrupt I found a boot
to launch windows (it wasn't my normal drive-and I don't understand why/how
it worked).

So now I have more questions:
1. after Trisquel installation how can I safely check to see if the Trisquel
OS is functional?

2. What is GRUB command line?
3. What emergency commands can I launch at the GRUB command line?
4. What does that earlier DOS terminal backup caution mean?

I am a bit over-stressed now, and will take a break from the PC; the image as
per your request is below, Ciao for today.

OK first of all do a back up of you SSD to your 4TB drive so you don't lost
your important data like your pictures and couments.

2.- In the UEFI go again to Boot and make sure to disable Fast Boot. This is
because the fast boot usually prevents to boot USB pen drives.

3.- Did you create the Trisquel Live USB already? Please create it.

4. in UEFI in boot below Fast boot there is a USB support option that says
partial, could you click it and show me what options you have there?

OK for now I think that is enough. Hopefully the next step will be to install
trisquel now :)

This is another good morning with storm clouds and rain, happy greetings to
all!

A pleasure meeting you Heather, your kind encouragement is appreciated :)

I am Ron, "Mamita" is my mate - the combined user name became a nic from
seasons past when I was coaching her to use the internet for the first time.
I haven't bothered to use a different nic - oops I must remember to not be
verbose, thanks Heather.

1a. I shall rid my home network of the Microsoft virus.

1b. Installing Trisquel is challenging but I haven't given up. each failure
brings me closer to success. sharing images here in the forum even challenged
me, LOL :D
I thought all the supported image formats would include the UEFI's "Print
Screen" feature, but sadly that was not the case. The UEFI image is .BMP and
not supported here at the forum so I launched GIMP, changed the images to
.PNG and then copied those new images to my K: drive so I could upload here
to the forum.

1c. In honor of Heather I named the folder and here are more images we can
discuss:
The 1st image is as Heather requested, from the BOOT tab - note, that is a
2.5 page length of options. thus I took 3 screenshots to display them
sequentially as "ASUS_UEFI_Boot_p1"; ...Boot_p2; ...Boot_p3; and the last
image is from the UEFI's "Advanced" tab that includes options for USB - I
think I attempted to alter some of those options, not sure as the UEFI has a
script of its own that appears to have changed some of my requests in favor
of what works best?
That's why I tabled discussing the bios, it's confusing but the Win7 OS still
works and the USB Trisquel Boot works, so that is progress.
Now for me to get a reliable backup, then C: drive free space to invade with
Trisquel...

That is the guide I am following.

Hi Magic Banana, I need help.
Trisquel installation reported: "This computer currently has no detected
operating system. What would you like to do?"

Then 3 options, so I backed out of the install procedure fearing I would
damage the Win7 OS.

***I'm on another internet search for help with Win7 backup errors***
My attempts to backup my Win7 computer failed (error code: 0x8007007b) 3x I
tried different solutions.
I wanted to have a backup so I could install Trisquel - I thought the backup
needs to be done and would be safe enough, even though I wanted to wait for
the arrival of my Trisquel Laptop.

I Spent another frustrating day on failed attempts...

I wish my Trisquel laptop was here already :(

Thanks Magic Banana
Yes, I did attempt to "install Trisquel on the USB drive where the running
live system is" - Okay, I won't do that again. Good to know.

Apertium and other Apps in repository will be installed after Trisquel - I'll
wait for the arrival of my Trisquel laptop, while I read bash tutorials, and
the details from FSF to maintain my free source GNU Laptop.
Staying away from SaaS and Mono requires awareness and intentional focus to
form new computer habits.

Thanks for the friendly support!

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-18 Thread blogstory

Thanks Magic Banana
SaaS, I have a lot to learn and new habits to form, thanks for the reminder.
I'm typing from Trisquel - Yay!

I found what I was doing wrong. I was using the F2 function key when
rebooting (not sure of the specific differences but this is my attempt to
explain what happened) that took me to the ASUS AI BIOS?
But when I reboot and used the F8 key it took me to the interrupted-POST BIOS
menu with the option to select boot drive, when I changed that, the POST took
me to the USB and Trisquel installation window.

So I haven't installed Trisquel yet, because when I attempted installation
more programming jargon confused me with options that don't match what I was
looking for (to partition sandisk 16GB USB drive is not listed) for Trisquel
installation - So I backed my way out and started over from the beginning.

I chose to NOT install Trisquel.
It (trisquel ISO image) runs from the sandisk 16GB USB memory stick.

I think I will play around with this for now and hope I don't screw-up any of
my Win 7 OS until after my Trisquel Laptop arrives and can safely work,
knowing Trisquel (Laptop) is running properly.

I'm learning slowly, more slowly than I would like, but it is progress.
* Most of my typed text has red-underlines meaning everything is misspelled -
lol I have to train trisquel - maybe trisquel thinks this is Spanish?
* I searched for a multi language translation application and want to know
what you think about CodePlex software:

Or do you have a FSF approved free source language translation app?

hi Magic Banana
I used the webpage below as my guide to install pendrivelinux
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb

I apologize for the above long story but all the details are there.
I decided to park the original bios-settings issue for now, and focus on
getting to the Trisquel bash command line from the USB.
I don't speak French but I read your
https://trisquel.info/fr/wiki/d%C3%A9marrer-un-syst%C3%A8me-live-installable

using google translate.

From what was translated I did all that was in your guide by my attempts to
alter the BIOS (UEFI) to prioritize the USB.

I am considering some alternatives, such as using virtualbox or similar
app...

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-17 Thread blogstory
I don't have any computer running gnu/linux, sudo commands are out and I
changed the BIOS settings several times trying to get the USB recognized
first.
The usb is already formated and readable. then I tried to make it a bootdrive
with pendrivelinux.com I thought it worked (no errors reported) but no boot
into Trisquel either.

So are you suggesting another App to try again what pendrive did?
I'm looking at https://rufus.akeo.ie/ and it reads:
> "Rufus is about twice as fast as"... pendrive

Yeah pendrive was slow but it worked (as far as I can see), I simply am
unable to get the USB to get me into Trisquel. The 16GB USB is SanDisk Cruzer
Glide fat32.

Re: [Trisquel-users] 13Aug2017 buy Trisquel laptop

2017-08-17 Thread greatgnu

Don't worry, verbose mate hehe :)

If you have there available a GNU distro then format the usb key (you can use
either winzozz - format in fat32, or on GNU you can use 'gparted') in
terminal:

lsblk

Look at the output- the hard drive should be sda, the usb key should be sdb
or sdc. Say it is sdb for the sake of the explanation

sudo dd if=/home/user/ronmamita/Trisqel.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M ; sync

Wait for it to finish.
Then in BIOS select usb as the firs to boot and you should be fine

On Windows you can use Rufus, I used it a couple of times on random computers
around and it worked fine.

4:53 PM 8/17/2017

I screwed up!

I don't recall what I did last time I installed Trisquel (3 years ago) maybe
I burned the ISO on a DVD disk.
but I don't have that DVD now and my son has all my burnable DVDs so I can't
make another.

But, really I didn't think it would matter.
I have the Trisquel ISO on my HDD, I'm all set, right?
WRONG!
I bought a USB 16 GB and copied the triquel ISO to it thinking I could use
the USB memory stick.
But there is no executable file and the reboot failed to stop at the plugin
USB Trisquel ISO!

This is where I went confused and stupid...
Why didn't that work? Okay, maybe I need to change the BIOS boot to recognize
the USB first!
So I tried several changes to my ASUS AI command module (and frankly I don't
remember the original settings after those efforts failed) - so that was a
SHOCKER!

Sigh, All the tutorial and the documents fail to explain how to step by step
complete this.
And I screwed up my BIOS settings... Well I'll park the bios settings for
later, if ever - because the windows still works and I am too frustrated to
focus on that atm.

So I search the archives here at https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/
and found a method to create a LiveUSB by downloading Pen Drive Linux's USB
Installer:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#button

So another download, and install to burn the ISO image onto the USB - well I
never...
That ISO burn took a long time to setup the USB (I guess USB sticks are
slow).
Okay the USB still has over 12GB free space so looking good, now let's
reboot.

Drum-roll please, now for the moment of truth...

Oh my, another monumental fail!
I only wanted to get some hands on exp. with the shell and terminal before my
Trisquel Laptop arrives.
I was willing to ignore the internet (as stated above in the previous
compatibility failure years ago) and simply practice with the command line
and apps included on the ISO image.

Now I have screwed up my custom BIOS setup and still can't run Trisquel.
Sadly, I now have to ask for assistance installing Trisquel on my windows PC.

Because trisquel will be on my home-network eventually this challenge must be
faced (and hopefully Trisquel will manage my home network and OS shared on
the other computers too) after I become proficient with the bash terminal -
which is why I failed to wait for my laptop to arrive - I want to learn by
typing at the command line.

LOL, Ha-ha I apologize for the long story but I needed to get it off my
chest.
Please point me to the step by step USB installation that will work for me
and my sandisk 16GB 2.0 USB memory stick and Windows 7 Home Premium ASUS BIOS
64bit desktop PC.

It is okay to laugh, I simply have difficulty with Trisquel, but I wish to
learn.

Ronmamita, which computer are you using? Please post brand, model, type etc.
Mason could be right, and if so it's just a matter of replacing the network

Since there are many other options to leave Microsoft than Trisquel, I
imagine that you approve with the free software philosophy. If that is the
case, I would like to lead you attention to libreboot. You may already know
this, but if not, please be aware, that before a computer starts the
operating system, another piece of software is run. On most computers this is
proprietary software, i.e. untrustworthy as Windows, iOX etc.

On a number of computers this software can be replaced with free software.
You can read more here: libreboot.org. Not all is readable for non-techies
(including myself), but you can read more other places. If you possess the
knowledge and/or patience and will - and for some machines the right
equipment - you can replace it yourself.
