Well... you just don't install those you don't want. Example:

:~/tempdir/LibO_3.4.2rc3_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS$

$ ls libreoffice3.4-dict*
libreoffice3.4-dict-en_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libreoffice3.4-dict-es_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libreoffice3.4-dict-fr_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
$ ls libobasis3.4-extension*
libobasis3.4-extension-beanshell-script-provider_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-javascript-script-provider_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-mediawiki-publisher_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-nlpsolver_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-pdf-import_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-presentation-minimizer_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-presenter-screen_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-python-script-provider_3.4.2-203_i386.deb
libobasis3.4-extension-report-builder_3.4.2-203_i386.deb

And if you've installed (via $ sudo dpkg -i *.deb), you can easily
remove via:

/opt/libreoffice3.4/share/extensions

Example:
$ sudo rm -R /opt/libreoffice3.4/share/extensions/dict-fr

Thanks. Normally I just ran the sudo dpkg -i *.deb, never though to
looks at the actual files and remove them from the mix.

Three things.

1) The template and extension web space is not on OOo equipment, it is
on Ohio State University Open Source Lab servers. The server is on an
under powered machine running Drupal CMS. Oracle pulled their people
that were working on it when the move to Apache was made.

2) There are people now working to get the web space stabilized so that

3) A long term solution is being discussed on the ooo-dev mailing list

Hi :)
Oracle managed to mishandle OOo so badly that they couldn't monetise it.
Apparently IBM pushed Oracle into donating OOo to The Apache Foundation a few
weeks ago.

There are Apache people in TDF (and some TDF in Apache) lists to help the 2
projects work together more closely and people are now allowed to work in both
again. It's bit weird because Oracle is not particularly close to Apache so
it's possible they were attempting to hamper Apache by giving them a poisoned
pawn. I don't think Oracle were expecting Apache to suddenly work with TDF,
effectively draining the poison and making OOo much more viable. Then IBM
donated a lot of their Lotus code to Apache making OOo even more viable.
OpenSource co-operative competition between projects beat the proprietary
mind-set again.

Most MS people are probably very unaware of these rapid changes that have taken
place in the last few weeks so they probably do think they are fighting
Oracle's OOo by suggesting LibreOffice instead. Still, it's probably best not
to inform them because they seldom appreciate being given better intel
especially if it's not directly from MS.

Many of the MS MVPs I know aren't swayed by Microsoft and suggest *best*

may not be a Microsoft solution.

As has been done on the forums that I have seen. It has been suggested

MS Office 2010 or 2007 at all without installing an extra patch. It's not just

All the facts are pointed out as well, like the incompatibility of some

Why would LibreOffice what to go backwards? The last time that OOo code

stands those features will not make it into OOo/AOOo unless the

licensing setup LO code can not be used in AOOo, though LO is free to
use any and all code from AOOo. Seems quite simple to me.

listing in a folder window on the desktop.

At this point, when I hover the cursor over the hyperlink in Reader, the
link shows D| instead of D: that I would expect.

What am I missing? Is this an LO issue with PDF export, or an Adobe
Reader issue?

What setting are you using for the export? How exactly are you

Unfortunately practically all of the undergraduates I teach are still windoze

windoze machine to do it on.

The problem is that somehow Bill has found a way to make .docx files containing graphs
impossible for LibreOffice, OpenOffice, or odfconverter to handle. See attached example.
The original version of this file (before I redacted the names and saved it from
libreoffice) definitely contains embedded graphs probably imported from EXCEL. But
nothing at all shows up in libreoffice 3.3.2 after the student's headings Part A:
Graph and so forth. Openoffice 3.1 and odfconverter give the same result.

Is there any insight out there? Conversion from .doc format works better, but as true
windoze droids these students can barely cope with instructions like save your file
in .doc format before turning it in.

Thanks.

Why not set the standard and require ODF format? Barring that why not
have them submitted as .doc which has better conversion? MS does not
follow the published standard that they pushed through the ISO
committees so it is hard for third party programmers to match the
format. It is actually harder than the reverse engineered .doc format.

I can't test this here, (one computer, one printer) but an educated
guess would lead me to test this by removing the defined printer from the

Try Tools- Options- Load/Save- General uncheck the two boxes under

Additionally, when printed from the computer that (correctly) shows

There are frames on the page and this/these seem to be rendered

Good thought! It turns out, when I look closer, the document is a bit of
a mish-mash of fonts and font styles.

I actually couldn't find one of the (two) fonts on my own machine. Would
LO substitute silently? Surely it should complain if it can't find the
font. But that looks like what's happened, because now that I've copied
those (TrueType) fonts over and restarted LO (not just closed Writer,
that didn't make any difference) the document now looks the same on both

What the... ! Hmmm, when would someone want that?

If you printing out for a book or such the odd pages are on the right.
If you start a new chapter and the last page of the prior chapter ends
on an odd page number then there is a blank page to put the new chapter
on the next odd page.

Yes, you're right, that box is checked. That presumably explains it.
Why, though, is it checked? Is that always the default. In my own
Writer print options I that option *NOT* checked... :-(

I am not sure if it is the Default or if it is switched on by selecting
a page style that has Left/Right attributes.

There has been no real movement over the last few years to get OOo Base
documentation, as far as I am concerned. I had the same issues when I
looked to find any documents for Base. I did see some odds-n-ends that
were for 1.x/2.x version of OOo, but nothing newer than that.

With Oracle in charge of OOo for almost a year, I do not think they
would want competition to their own data base for-pay product line. So
no help there. It is up to a group of document authors who worked on the
OOo documents to come up with LibreOffice versions. For my opinion,
there are not too many people there that work with Base. Also, opinion
again, the little I know about Base leads me to believe that the
language you create the data base controls, forms, and reports is the
largest part of the data base work. So if there are other sources for
documentation for those languages, then people would look to them and
the issue would be to rewrite that type of documents for the OOo and now
LibreOffice package. I could easily be wrong, but I remember some
comments about that somewhere else.

Right now, the document people are doing their best to modify the
current set from OOo to LibreOffice, or just rewrite new ones.

There are two people working on a manual for base at ODFAuthors. The
problem is that it is a slow process as almost everything has to be
rewritten. If anyone wants to help with it go to

(this seems to be the only setting that relates to the topic.) The I
click ok and F5 to run the slideshow. The slide show starts on my main
monitor (the laptop) no Presentation Console anywhere. The second
display (the projector) is still as before.

I can not test under XP but I had no problem using Ubuntu. First you
have to find out where the extra monitor is seen by LibO. For me it was
listed as 'primary'. Instead of using the All displays setting you
set it for the, in my case, Primary. Start the slide show and the slide
show runs on the 'primary' display and the Presenter runs on the
'secondary' display.

Any help on finding the link to the things that should be on such a

is not OOo and that was well before Oracle bought it.

I am not one who will be listed on the web site as an official type of
distribution for LibreOffice, but just a local one in New York State,
USA. Well maybe I could do more distribution, but I will need to be
able to have a proper disc created and such for the needed system types
first. I would be a mirror download site, if needed, or wanted, as
well. I just need to know what is needed to be done.

The only thing you can do right now is download the different packages
from the download page and build from that. This maybe something to
bring up in one of the 'admin' list, though I am not sure which one as
there is not 'distribution project' as of yet.

Thank you for asking this question, Cliff. Yesterday, I lost my
connection to the Internet (the blizzard) and hit the F1 and my browser
was launched. I forgot I had installed the help files after installing
LO. It would have been nice if it had gone to the installed help. Since
it did not, I'd have to say Andy's suggestion doesn't work.

Well, all I can say it that it works here. Browser opens a local file

No one is making me pay for per transfer bandwidth. I am quite sure
there are members of this list that have to pay extra though. This has
been hashed over on the OOo lists so I am sure you have seen it.

Is there any way I could use my hosting account to help out with
LibreOffice's bandwidth and transfer needs? I could be a second source
for downloading the files from, or some other thing. I have maybe 100
gig of free space left on my account at the last time I checked. I use
the Krackedpress.com domain for email accounts only at this point, but
host several others for myself and not-for-profit-organizations. Since
LibreOffice falls in the last category, I have no qualms in helping out
this way.

Pass my offer on to the powers that be. I am on a fixed income, so I
cannot donate cash, but I have not problem donating space on my hosting
account. I can host another 20 or 30 domains with ease and could host
100+/- more web pages worth of files over what I am currently hosting

have it in spades to spare.

Where did I say that LibreOffice needed bandwidth?

For example I run Ark Linux. Its an independent rpm based, kde centric

This is coming from an advanced user and minor independent none cloned

Mark is right, LO needs to have one common installation format that

Thanks and hope I haven't offended anyone,

I see no need for anyone to take offense. Even though I use Ubuntu that

some prefer to move ahead for new features or bug fixes that do not make

No chance, because I don't even have it.

Maybe Matteo was typing in the extension as .pptx?

That does have some chance

I assumed it was saved as an _actual_ pptx because I could open it with
Archive Manager and see some XML files in it, which is what I expected a
pptx to look like; but I now realize that odp files also look like that
(not exactly the same though).

So I _may_ have typed in the .pptx extension and assumed that it was
choosing the file format based on extension.

However I _don't_ think so, because I've just tried it, and if I simply
type somefile.pptx as the file name, it automatically adds an odp
extension and saves it as somefile.pptx.odp (both with OOo and LO), and
I am categorically sure that I didn't rename the file to pptx after saving.

There is the chance that you had the Automatic file name extension
unchecked. If the is the case the ODP extension would not have been
used, just saved in that format.
