Apparently IBM pushed Oracle into donating OOo to The Apache Foundation a few weeks ago. There are Apache people in TDF (and some TDF in Apache) lists to help the 2 projects work together more closely and people are now allowed to work in both again. It's bit weird because Oracle is not particularly close to Apache so it's possible they were attempting to hamper Apache by giving them a poisoned pawn. I don't think Oracle were expecting Apache to suddenly work with TDF, effectively draining the poison and making OOo much more viable. Then IBM donated a lot of their Lotus code to Apache making OOo even more viable. OpenSource co-operative competition between projects beat the proprietary mind-set again. Most MS people are probably very unaware of these rapid changes that have taken place in the last few weeks so they probably do think they are fighting Oracle's OOo by suggesting LibreOffice instead. Still, it's probably best not to inform them because they seldom appreciate being given better intel especially if it's not directly from MS. Regards from Tom :) Many of the MS MVPs I know aren't swayed by Microsoft and suggest *best* solutions that may not be a Microsoft solution. As has been done on the forums that I have seen. Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer document appears differently on two differen PC's
Mark Stanton wrote: I have a document that spans two pages when viewed/edited on one computer but is only one page when viewed/edited from the other computer on my network. All the page settings appear the same when viewed from either computer (how could they be different?) Can there be any personal settings influencing this? That's the only (sensible) reason I can think of for the discrepancy, but I haven't been able to find any. Additionally, when printed from the computer that (correctly) shows the document as being only one page, LO prints a second, blank, page for each correct page of the document (when it's mail merged). There are frames on the page and this/these seem to be rendered differently on each computer. I started to check their options and they appeared to be the same, but of course they do, it's the same file! How can there be a difference in rendering? Is this a known issue? If not I'll post it and the example file as a bug report, but I thought I'd ask here first. Regards Mark Stanton One small step for mankind... First are the fonts used on both computers? But that looks like what's happened, because now that I've copied those (TrueType) fonts over and restarted LO (not just closed Writer, that didn't make any difference) the document now looks the same on both machines. Brilliant Holmes! Thanks :-D Seen this type of thing quite often in the forum so it is one of the first to check. Second check the File- Print libreOffice Writer tab and see if the Print automatically inserted blank pages box is checked. What the... ! Hmmm, when would someone want that? If you printing out for a book or such the odd pages are on the right. If you start a new chapter and the last page of the prior chapter ends on an odd page number then there is a blank page to put the new chapter on the next odd page. Yes, you're right, that box is checked. That presumably explains it. Why, though, is it checked? Is that always the default. In my own Writer print options I that option *NOT* checked... :-( I am not sure if it is the Default or if it is switched on by selecting a page style that has Left/Right attributes. I did see some odds-n-ends that were for 1.x/2.x version of OOo, but nothing newer than that. With Oracle in charge of OOo for almost a year, I do not think they would want competition to their own data base for-pay product line. So no help there. It is up to a group of document authors who worked on the OOo documents to come up with LibreOffice versions. For my opinion, there are not too many people there that work with Base. Also, opinion again, the little I know about Base leads me to believe that the language you create the data base controls, forms, and reports is the largest part of the data base work. So if there are other sources for documentation for those languages, then people would look to them and the issue would be to rewrite that type of documents for the OOo and now LibreOffice package. I could easily be wrong, but I remember some comments about that somewhere else. Right now, the document people are doing their best to modify the current set from OOo to LibreOffice, or just rewrite new ones. There are two people working on a manual for base at ODFAuthors. The problem is that it is a slow process as almost everything has to be rewritten. If anyone wants to help with it go to http://www.odfauthors.org/ and signup. When OOo began creating distro specific package, it became easier for those running these favoured distros, but for everyone else, it became more difficult. For example I run Ark Linux. Its an independent rpm based, kde centric distro. We are not a clone distro like the ubuntus. So I have to adapted OOo and even LiberOffice (which is easier than OOo). It would have been better to be able to just use an install script of some kind. This is coming from an advanced user and minor independent none cloned distro devel. Can you image how noobs must feel? Mark is right, LO needs to have one common installation format that doesn't reward some distros for having money to push themselves into the spotlight or punish those little distros that don't. Thanks and hope I haven't offended anyone, Kate Draven I see no need for anyone to take offense. Even though I use Ubuntu that has to be an easer way to install the non-standard distro versions. If one is willing to stick with what the distro provides that is fine but some prefer to move ahead for new features or bug fixes that do not make it into the distro versions. My 2cents. Re: [libreoffice-users] Beta 3; No Context Menus Program Stops Responding
On Sun Nov 21 2010 11:56:47 GMT-0800 (PST) Terry Warby wrote: Downloaded Beta 3 for Linux (deb) and Windows this morning and loaded them on my desktop machine. This is dual booted, Win 7 and Ubuntu/Xubuntu each on their own hard drive, 2.5GB Ram. On ubuntu/xubuntu there are no problems (so far), but on Win 7 Pro I find that there are no context menus in Write or Draw when right clicking. In addition, if I click on the any of the main menu items, such as File or Format, the program stops responding. In short, the program is unsuable. Checking out the task manager, I find the CPU cycles are sky high (80%+) when the program stops responding. I've also downloaded and installed OOo 3.3 RC5 for comparison purposes and don't have the same problem. Neither did I have the problem with LibO 3.3 Beta 2 so I strongly suspect a serious bug. Has anybody else reported this behaviour; surely it can't be peculiar to my machine? I have a WinXP virtual machine but haven't tried that yet. If its a confirmed bug, how do I report it formally? Re: [libreoffice-users] saving a pptx presentation

Would you, by any chance, have saved the presentation with PowerPoint 2007? No chance, because I don't even have it. Maybe Matteo was typing in the extension as .pptx? That does have some chance I assumed it was saved as an _actual_ pptx because I could open it with Archive Manager and see some XML files in it, which is what I expected a pptx to look like; but I now realize that odp files also look like that (not exactly the same though). So I _may_ have typed in the .pptx extension and assumed that it was choosing the file format based on extension. However I _don't_ think so, because I've just tried it, and if I simply type somefile.pptx as the file name, it automatically adds an odp extension and saves it as somefile.pptx.odp (both with OOo and LO), and I am categorically sure that I didn't rename the file to pptx after saving. There is the chance that you had the Automatic file name extension unchecked. If the is the case the ODP extension would not have been used, just saved in that format. -- E-mail to users+h...@libreoffice.org for instructions on how to unsubscribe List archives are available at http://www.libreoffice.org/lists/users/ All messages you send to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
