Hmm! you have a good point there Tony. I never thought of that. Perhaps that is
the reason I bought the rotary hinged type in the first place. ☺️ I tie
parachutes once in a while, but can't remember what hackle pliers I use. My go
to hackle pliers are the electrical style as long as they have a

Nev,I also used the Electrical hooks and they work fine just like a good pair

hold the arm vertical while the pliers is alt an angle. I can work the hackle

Tony: I’ll have to try those electrical hooks as I bought a dozen of them a

painting the popper heads and waiting for it to dry while I’m waiting to put on

Don: Well, as you’ll see in my post just now, I did order the rotary hackle
pliers, but If they don’t work for me, the good news is that I’m only out about
$8. I have only used the type you talk about with the rubber pads, and have
great success with them, but just wanted to try something new.
Give us a report when you do.Tony

Wayne: I’m glad you posted this, because that’s the kind I cannot use. But
others can, while others like the rubber footed ones like myself, while others
like the rotary pliers. So this way, since I went ahead and ordered the rotary
pliers I can see for myself which ones I really like best.
Neville: I ordered them in size 8 tonight for bluegill as we don’t have any
trout where I’m at, so we’ll see if they catch bluegill/bass, or crappie coming
soon I hope. Chuck

I have some of the 37160 hooks but they are size 1/0 and were favoured for a
steelhead nymph fly some 30 odd years ago. I tied several of the flies but
never caught anything on them.

Tnx. That one looks very user friendly.
I have one of their bobbins and I use it almost exclusively.
It was very expensive but I believe it is well worth it because I use it so
much and feels good while you are using it.
I’ll bet the hackle pliers are that good also?

I think they are, Alan. The knurled handle rotates, there is a rotating joint
from the metal to the rubber section, and the rubber section is a hinge. I’ve
had mine for 15 yrs (I tie a *lot*) and this year the pads for the index finger
and thumb are showing signs of wear. Otherwise – great. One
Yeah Allan. Quit picking ion Chuck LOL... J/K. Tony brings up something that
will make the rotary pliers WELL worth the money to me. I hadn’t even thought
about parachute hackles. That’s one of the hardest things for me to do. In
fact, I just don’t tie them as I ALWAYS make a mess out of them.
Not trying to complicate the issue but, my favorite hackle pliers are
mini-grabbers. The really small ones, I think they're about an inch long and
dirt cheap!

these type hooks?? If so, any luck??? Thanks, Chuck

Well, since Allan reminded me that since I have a rotary vise, in theory I
already have rotating hackle pliers, and since I hadn’t actually hit the
“order” button, I just deleted the pliers and jacked up the number of foam
spider bodies I ordered which I KNOW I use all the time LOL.. Chuck
That Dick's Dandy sounds like one of the flies that were submitted for the
Sowbug Tying Contest. I think it was in the streamer category. We did the
judging on those flies last night. Sounds like a good one. We had over 50 flies
submitted.Tony

Don,I agree with you on the old type hackle pliers but I really don't use them
anymore since I use the hinge type. I added a bit of shrink tubing on the jaws
and that works fine and prevents slipping. One of the things I liked about the
old type is you could put your finger in the loop and just
Allan give Chuck a break. LOLA rotary vise is useless for winding parachute
hackles. The swivel hackle pliers is the way to go on them. That is all I have
used for about 25 years. The long handle one is the best for that. I can show
what I mean at the show., Gee now I am picking on you. LOL I
Guess I must be the odd ball. I use the old style pliers as weights to keep
stuff from unwinding, for the winding of hackle I use one of several rotary
style hackle pliers. My rotary vise I use just to check the off side of a fly
or work on the underside of a fly. What ever floats your

Chuck,
Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary hackle
pliers. I have a set and never use them. I also have an old squeeze-spring type
with rubber pads, and I’ll use them before the rotary. The rubber pads on the
old pliers are the key as they don’t allow the pliers to
