some of the prettiest flies ever devised...thass why i keep the Carrie
Steven's poster of alll those streamers on the wall in the tyin'
room...just somethin' so nice to look at on a daily basis. 20 minutes
ago i was sittin' right underneath it, watchin' a Davy Wotten tyin' DVD, and
havin' a beer, while another coat of head dressing was dryin' on my latest
creation...well, football season starts in 2 hours..lol.

Hi Ya Joe..this is crazy googanheimer.lmao. 8:16 a.m. and i
haven't been to bed yet.did three flies last night and didn't even get
started til 3:00 a.m. Just put out the garbage for pick up today.just a
bit tired.
We first fished the Battenkill in '93...we were up in Vermont attending the
Orivs school in Manchester. We went back and fished it again several times
after that. The whole stretch where it leaves Vermont, turning west in that
little town where the Norman Rockwell Museum is and running into New York, past
Shushen on the way, is a great stretch of water. I had a great day behind the
Shushen post office in that riffle one time.bout 20 Bows. I have a framed
fly tyed by Dick Talleur.the Shushen Postmaster, named after the postmaster
of that very same post office in Shushen. Dick did 200 of them for TGF one
year, and a bunch of us (TGF members) got together and framed all 200 in one
eve. at Jane Timken's house in Manhattan. They were given to any member who
would re-up his dues for a three year period at one timeof course
we fell right into that trap, lmao. Obviously those frames weren't to
elaborate, lol. i later transfered mine to a more appropriate frame. The
Battenkill isn't what it once was.but still worth a pilgra"midge." And
everybody should go to the American Museum of Fly Fishing at least once. We've
been there 3 times and i still wanna go back one more time some
day.well. It's 8:30 and i still gotta go downstairs one more time.
Another coat of Sally'slol. mark.

Mark -

I know what you mean about fishing the "classic" rivers. Like you, I started
my trout fishing in the northeast, but I was further north than you. My first
experiences were on the Battenkill where it swings briefly across the Vermont /
New York line. My favorite hole was down stream from the bridge at Shushen,
New York. That was where I caught my first trout on a fly - a 10" brown on an
Adams dry ... How classic can you get? My first trout on a fly was with a dry,
but I soon went along with the trend and became a wet fly fisherman and to this
day I seldom fish a dry fly - althoough I still carry a box of them with me
every time I hit the stream.

Would of been cool to have got to meet the cat..unfortunately, he died
in 1914. At least we did get to know several people who spent their lives
knowing several people who did know T.G. We were so fortunate to start, and
spend the first 20 years of our fly fishing lives, in the Catskills. And to be
members of the board of directors of the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and on the
Conservation Committee for 15 years. And to be able to go on a lot of fun
fishing trips with the club and visit the Anglers Club in lower Manhattan a few
times at TGF Dinners, was terriffic. That place is amazing. We saw flies
actually tyed by T.G. there, amoung so many other things. But most of
all.it is to have fished all the same rivers he did, the Neversink..the
Beaverkill.the Willowemoc.the Esophus.the Callicoon.the East
and West Branches of the Delaware and the Delaware.sacred waters.
If you've never been there.GO! Go at least once before you
die...you must make your pilgrimage to the home of American dry fly
fishing. Wet flies were already being fished on the Battenkill in Vermont and
on the Broadhead in Pennsylvainia (on the legendary Henryville water), before
fly fishing came to the Catskills.but "Dry Fly" fishing.it ALL
started in the Catskillsso, if you wanna make it into
heavennuff said?
P.S. don't forget to visit the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum when your
thereour first home in the Catskills, was an apartment on top of
the gift shop there, for 17 and a half months..great times.great
memories. GO!

Alan.Misa and i were just thinkin' of you.we got our return
rinvites to the show in INDY by email yesterday. But we probably won't be able
to make it. It was fun last year and the people were VERY nice..but $$$ is
tight and with hotel, gas, resturants, etc., etc...AND they still wanna
charge $50 to the tyers for their table(s). So...i didn't mind payin'
that once..but again...i don't think so. Looks like 2010 may be our
last year for LOTS of travel and we need to save for that. And Jan. is not my
favorite time to be on the road anyway. Hope they do well though, and we hope
to see you here for the FFF S.C.C. in Oct. You can stay with us if you like.
There's three other people stayin' already.the more, the merrier.
We just got home from a Sowbug committee meeting. Everything is on track for
2010. sh, lots of cool books for raffle...hehehehehehehe.

Rick, if anyone should know.i'd think it'd be you. Your pretty much a warm
water expert. Perasonally i've never fished with a midge for any warm water
species. But i suspect Gills eat 'em, along with Misquito larva, by the
thousands.
."Misquito".i like that.

i'd pretty much have to agree.at least in terms of "Match the Hatch" fly
fishing..because even the "stage" (nymph, emerger dun), is so important.
but does the same hold true for the attractor angler? i spose to some degree it
does.or perhaps to an even higher degree than the match the hatch angler.
the match the hatch guy thinks he has science (nature) on his side.or that
he may have done his best to "figure it out," and eliminate all the negitives.
But the attractor fisherman has placed his faith in only himself and decided he
can entice the fish into doin' exactly as he wishes him to
dointeresting contrast.

"I couldn't tell which brand of caddis they might be, and didn't take time to
collect any - one gets into these choices, when the travel schedule is a bit
heavy and the fishing time is a bit short, between the desire to collect the
insects upon which trout are feeding, or the conflicting desire to collect a
tithe of the trout that are feeding on the insects, based on a guess about what
the insects might be, and an estimation about which fly might match them."

Schullery writes welli knocked off bout half of one of his books last
year while in Colorado with Misa's team. Gotta get back to it and finish it. He
knows a hell of a lot bout the west.western fly fishing, history, etc.,
etc..he was at the American Museum of Fly Fishing (some capacity or
other), for a time as well.the one in Manchester, Vermont. Make SURE you
get there if you cantotally cool place. They got a serious
library.all at the publics disposal. So sad that the Museum in Livingston,
MT. is now closed. Was an amazing collection. Most of it now, is at the
University of Montana in Bozeman.

"FISHING HAS A REPUTATION as an innocuous, fairly mindless pastime enjoyed most
by shiftless people. Perhaps that impression would be lessened if nonfishers
understood more about wild water. Calling fishing a hobby is like calling brain
surgery a job. The average visitor driving through Yellowstone sees no farther
than the surface of the water. At best the lakes and streams are mirrors
reflecting the surrounding scenery. For the alert fisherman, especially the fly
fisherman, the surface is not a mirror but a window. " Paul Schullery

Arthur Miller was, i believe, his real namehis book Fishless Days,
Angling Nights was one of the first fly fishing books, and still, one of the
VERY best, i ever read...he used to stay at the Antrim Hotel when he
was in the Catskills..the Antrim is bout 10 city blocks distance
from our house in Roscoe, N.Y. It's been in the process of being rebuilt for
bout 5/6 years now. They had it almost finished when a fire took it out again.
Should be ready in 2011. Gonna be amazing to see it back in operation again.
The new owner is a fly fisher and a lifetime member of TGF. The Antrim was THE
meeting place for all anglers, rich and poor, unknown and famous, for many a
decade

There is an article in the latest "American Angler" magazine on fly rod action
. July/Aug 2009 issueQuotes for the next few days from that

"The fly-rod industry hasn't made an effort to create a more accurate
definition of 'action'... (but) even if you came up with a standard for action,
it wouldn't tell you what a rod felt like."
