Michael,
My file is 23 MB, but in the future I expect to be uploading larger files.
I used ourmedia publisher to upload the file but I don't know how to find the
url to copy to the icon and text as in step 5 of frervlog tutorial.

On the Ourmedia site, look for my controls on the left hand side -
click on my page. Scroll down the page that comes up and you will
see a list of the things you've published. Click the link to the
media you want and it will take you to it's node page. From there
the instructions will be like Freevlog.

I agree this is an area set to explode. Furthermore,
I suspect (especially in the case of the UK) that with the amount of bandwidth
trying to be sold to private and business users, applications that encourage it
must have a decent chance of getting some help/partnerships with more established
companies.

Probably means people like those on this

It does not count search feeds and such. It does
count duplicate feeds

My best guess right now is that there are about
1000 people putting
video in their blogs. There are 1000s more putting
video on website,
but without the bloggy structure and without
feeds. Of course,
definitions are difficult, and we can talk all

maybe 10 or 20. I fully expect there to be 100,000

This announcement is not about downloading content from your PC to TiVo.

TiVo will allow downloading video from selected sources via broadband.

They are testing this feature with three content providers right now.

I'd like to test it when it allows you to subscribe to RSS 2.0 feeds
with enclosures. That will be big news.

Re: [videoblogging] iTunes 1-click subscribe

2005-08-16 Thread Jen Simmons

The vast majority of Mac and Windows users are too LAZY to download
and install QT 7. Right? How cool is that? We have to acquiesce to the
 LAZY MASSES?

A lot of people don't really know how to update the software on their
computers. Others can't -- like all the machines at the University
where I teach are locked down so the people who use them can't change
them and the people who change them only do so twice a year (and it is
the same at every public library, every internet cafe -- and most
people globally are accessing the internet at an internet cafe). Other
people don't want to upgrade to QT7 -- like me for example. I need to
have my system working well and am not in a place right now where I
want to be messing around with software that from many accounts is
buggy. Quicktime 7 for Mac came out when I was on a big deadline for a
film I was cutting in Final Cut, and I would have been insane to alter
my computer system mid-project. Once my project was done, I was hearing
about all kinds of weird bugs people are experiencing, and I decided to
wait until they are worked out.

I didn't start compressing files using Quicktime 6 codecs until
Quicktime 6 had been out for about a year, despite the fact QT6 is far
far far superior to QT5. There I was plugging away, publishing in QT5
simply because I knew many people wouldn't be able to watch my films
with their old players. In fact, I'm getting comments now that people
can't see what I've compressed for QT6, and I know (from the symptoms
they describe) it's because they STILL only have the QT5 player.

We all are coming from different places -- some need to be on the
cutting edge in order to know what's happening there. Others need to
back off a bit to get work done. Some want to drive the technology
forward by supporting and using the most recent tools and demanding
their audiences keep up, others want to reach a less-tech-savvy
community and so know they must hold back a bit. None of these choices
are right or wrong -- they are just choices, and those of us who
understand the technologies with a deep, rich set of experiences make
all kinds of different choices all the time.

Rather than getting all huffy and self-righteous, it's better to just
realize this technology is incredibly complex, and still overwhelmingly
tricky for the majority of people. The best way to help out is to
calmly teach teach teach teach teach :-) Many many people on this list
do exactly that every single day.. and more and more human beings
on our planet are getting more and more computer literate and media
savvy.

[videoblogging] Desperate sound help

2005-08-16 Thread Tyrone Rubin

Hiya All

Was hoping someone could identify with a problem I am having. I am capturing dv footage from my panansonic. Everything seemed fine until about a week ago all the footage I capture has sound glitches. Video is perfect just sound is not. The sound problem is hard to explain, basically the sound is fine but every couple of seconds there is a type of glitch being heard. When I play the footage from the camera directly to the television the sound is perfect (no peaking, levels fine everything good). At first I thought it was bit related or khz related but not. I tried a different sound card as well as firewire cable. I am just stumped. By the way I am using both Movie Maker and Premier 6.5 to capture and both give audio problems.

I am willing to pay or share skills with anyone who
can help me work out how to do this. The reason I
want it to work via email is that I want to use it
with kids in schools and they can all send emails and
 mobile phone messages!

welllets think about what's possib le..especially through this group.
so you want people to send short videos through the phone.
you could email them.
but you could send them to a blog...that people can subscribe to.
http://www.videoblogging.info/archives/phone-videoblogging/

problem with person to person is that once its sent it stops
there...unless someone sends it on a agin.
sending a video to a blog..creates an archiove...creates alive feed
that MANY people can subscribe to.

make sense?

[videoblogging] Re: Video Metadata / Derivative Works

2005-08-16 Thread Steve Watkins

People with Macs might want to check out this software which is quite
nice and free, Metadata Hootenanny:

http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html

You can make a nice list of all your .mov , .mp4 .3gp files and see
all the metadata layed out in columsn, sort by metadata, edit
metadata, its sort of similar to itunes in the way things are displayed.

If you add metadata using it, you can choose to just save that info in
the programs database, export as XML, or have it resave the video file
with the new metadata (without any reencoding of the video). This does
not work for .mp4 files though, if you direct save .mp4s over the top
of the originals, it breaks them. Im more than a little annoyed that
.mp4 seems to be lacking metadata support, waiting for mpeg7 to get
integrated into the tools or something, anyway whatever the cause I
think its a tragedy.

You can also do stuff with chapter points but I havent tried that stuff.

Human Dog mov's were the only ones I tried that had a decent amount of
metadata already includded.

I suppose there is some merit in the idea that an aggregator could
take info from the RSS feed and inject it into the actual media file
after download. But this has the potential to malfunction under
certain circumstances I suppose, if such a feature were used then need
to make sure it never corrupts the media.

Id far rather the content producers took responsibility for metadata,
yes the tools need to encourage this. Quicktime 7 is better than 6
when it comes to metadata viewing and editing, but its still not the
most streamlined procedure.

Certainly creators having to enter their metadata numerous times (eg
in the video file and then again upon upload to ourmedia/archive) is a
pain and needs to be eliminated in the longrun for this stuff to be
used by the masses. It is already possible for webserver based code to
read metadata from certain video file formats (for more info search
for getid3) but its clearly not been the top priority of most
publishing systems so far. It will be much easier for services that
only support certain video file formats to offer this than services
that accept pretty much all formats.

Even if people wont be bothered to put descriptions and other data
that changes with every 'episode', it would be nice if creation tools
could have author website defaults so that it automatically saves
the creators name etc every time you make a movie.

Cheers

Hmm. I just read a few messages ago about the ability to add
metadata to mov files. I'd obviously forgotten about the ability to
add metadata to WMV. Serves me right for using editing software that
doesn't allow me to set/edit metadata on export.

However, my point was not really that current *formats* don't support
metadata (although that's how I phrased it, I'll admit).

My intended point was that the great majority of video *files* don't
include metadata. I just had a quick scan thorough my colection of
 downloaded videoblogs.

I can't get the QT player to show me any user metadata (i.e things
like author, date, copyright etc.) for _any_ of the .mov files. That may
because I don't know how to look for it, as I don't usually use the QT
player. If anyone can point at how to find useful user metadata in any
existing QT videoblogs, please let me know.

Of the WMV files, the only one with anything approaching usable
metadata is Rocketboom. Most WMV files have little or no metadata, and
most of the ones that do, just have adverts for the software used to
create the file rather than anything about the content.

Based on my straw poll, it seems that most current videoblogs don't
contain user metadata, and by inference, most current videobloggers
don't add it to their movies. I also reckon that until software
support gets a bit more friendly, most new videobloggers won't add
 user metadata either.

After all, the post that started this happened because someone
downloaded a file and couldn't find out where it came from later.

So, in a situation like this, where some formats _support_ metadata,
but it's not really used, I suggest that my original suggestion still
has some value. Enclosure grabber programs should contain an *option*
to add the metadata that they know from downloading the file (such as
source and date of creation/posting) to the file in a portable way.

Such as tagging it on to the filename.

Or am I still missing some important point?

Re: [videoblogging] Questions Regarding Sponsorships, Underwriting, Ads, and Rates, etc.

2005-08-16 Thread Randolfe Wicker

At age sixty-seven, I have already made some
choices. I gave up working in the arts about thirty years ago because I
was so tired of being poor. I went into retailing and at least was my own
boss and captain of my own ship.

I didn't make nearly as much money as I
hoped. However, I had a comfortable life and was able to give employment
to many special people over the years.

Now, I'm retired and am returning to the
arts. Fortunately, I saved all those years and can now indulge myself by
getting $10,000 or $15,000 worth of top-of-the-line computer video and editing
equipment so I can work at vlogging and documentary making. There is
something to be said for "delayed satisfaction".

However, what is right for one person is wrong for
another. My best friend pursued a career in writing and earned a meager
living at it. He was younger than I and died a few months ago. His
decision to pursue his art for the last thirty years was obviously the right one
for him. If he had chosen my path, he might have just slaved away all
those years to gather money and might never have gotten around to creating the
art and recording his life through published books like he did.

So, regardless of the decisions we make, life is a
gamble and there is no "right" or "wrong" way. I feel sorry for all those I meet
who are so desperately eager to create but who can't afford the equipment or the
time.

If I die within the next couple years, I will have
made the wrong decision. If I live out my (by the charts) life expectancy
to the age of 83 and am able to raise Hell till my dying day, I will have made
the correct choice.

Life and life choices are gambles. So long as
we live, the dice keep rolling.

May you live long and well. May you choose
the path right for you and prosper!

Just to clarify, Im aware that .mp4 metadata issues are a problem that
is not Metadata Hootenanny's fault, its a wider issue, one that makes
me sad at the silliness that metdata stuff wasnt included in mp4
wrapper from the getgo.

Since I got a Mac a few months ago, I can certainly see the value of
systemwide searching that looks at metadata. I just type Human Dog
into spotlight and bingo there are all the HD videos Ive got on my system.

Ok, maybe not spend your whole life. Maybe just 20 years or so. :]

And maybe when your skills in other areas enable you to make better
money, in a shorter time, with less stress - leaving you relaxed,
happy, and funded to do what you really like with the rest of your

Two days a week of computer consultancy would easily pay for me to
look after my family _and_ spend the rest of the week making video.
I'm sure I'd be hard pushed to make that kind of money in video even
if I spent the whole seven days tinkering with cameras and editing
software. I have a dozen valuable years of experience in software
design and development, but nothing like that in video.

Hello Folks,

I posted a mesage 'movlogging' about trying to send
videos to a blog gallery format.

I got no answers. I made the term up on the spur of
the moment in an attempt to explain what I wanted help
with. I Said

What I want to create is a movlog. In both Mambo and

I am willing to pay or share skills with anyone who

(I have tried mefeedia but the _javascript in Mambo
only created a link to mefeedia not the video
archive.)

Does anyone have the skills, or know someone who could
tweak the templates. I am in touch with the
developers
who have made the moblog by email capacity and so can
get info at that end as well.

This would be really neat! The final goal Movlog in
Mambo and Wordpres that takes off attachments ( the
easy bit) and boths them into a table with rows and
columns that on click displays and plays the video in
a new templated page. Like I said I can pay... even!
Or offer support for Mambo or the moblogging bit in
return.

Thanks

Did I delete this by mistake? I am not sure...

Including the video file on the page is not hard. If you can already posts

Yes, it is possible. It will depend on what type of noise it is...is
it more of a buzzing, or a humming? If you have an editing system,
like Final Cut Pro, you can help the audio by using either a high-
pass (for low frequency problems, like a hum) or a low-pass (for high-
frequency problems, like a hiss) audio filter. You may also want to

Yes. You'll need to make sure that the small window where "album art" is located is visible. As long as they do not receive higher search return results than you,
if you are willing to let them keep up with it, maybe ask them if

Also, the least they could do is report back statistics.

Including the video file on the page is not hard. If

What's *not* easy is thumbnail creation.

Siobhan Ramsey

Some options:

1) Export and upload the sound file and send the url
so we can listen to it
and help diagnose what's going on.

2) It might be a ground loop problem that can be
solved by checking how
you're powered.

 a) If your camera is powered through your
computer, try using a
ground lift and record a bit to see if it's coming
from power or
 b) if you use a laptop, try recording a test
with just battery
power.

3) If your camera is plugged into its own power, make
sure it's plugged into
the same outlet as your computer and test.

While Josh is correct about being able to use high/
low pass filters, you'll
note there can be a significant degradation in the
overall quality of the
sound so if you can find out and eliminate whence the
hum originates you're
much better off.

[videoblogging] Re: Videobloggers in Arizona?

2005-08-16 Thread LeanBackVids.com

We can already start automating the process of geotagging by including
the latitude and longitude in our XML feeds. The W3C recommends the
following format...

geo:lat47.612/geo:lat
geo:long-122.328/geo:long

Ideally, both the feed and indivual posts will include geotags. This
allows us to not only map the feed provider, but also each item of
content.

FeedBurner recently added support for geotagging your feeds. Just
signin and edit your feed, then scroll down to the Geotag Your Feed
option.

I am fully aware of how not-easy it is to find the lat/lon of a
location, but until our cameras include GPS it will remain an added
process. To make things slightly easier, I built this location finder
page...
http://www.vlogmap.org/finder.php

Note, it also includes the new del.icio.us tagging which allows us to
map specific videos. Yes, this is not an automated or easy process,
but we will all continue to benefit from the adoption of geotagging.

missingkittentv.com does appear to be using Apache as the web server

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Videobloggers in Arizona?

2005-08-16 Thread Jan

When I checked the feedburner.com geotag option to 'yes' a few days ago I
only inserted my zip code and not in the mood to check and enter the
long/lat, saved the choice and left it at that.

Prompted by your note, Matt, returned today to find that Feedburner had
included the proper long/lat automatically. Cool.

It's fairly easy to go into the Blogspot settings (Settings -- Format --
Post Template) and add the code you recommend so it appears automatically
with each new post.

One question, tho: won't it clog up the vlogmap if you get all the posts in
one long/lat - could get ugly. Perhaps only tag individual posts if you're
traveling or it makes sense to geotag individual posts for some other
reason, like the long/lat of the persons you're quoting or something.

Don't poo-poo the wheel re-inventors!

Re: [videoblogging] Less creepy geotags? (Was: Videobloggers in Arizona?)

2005-08-16 Thread Christopher Bergeron

Well you could loose a few decimal places but that
probably won't give you the effect you're looking for
but since you would be the one choosing the Lat/Lon
for any video you could be as accurate as you choose
to be.

We can already start automating the process of
 geotagging by including
the latitude and longitude in our XML feeds. The
 W3C recommends the
  following format...

  geo:lat47.612/geo:lat
  geo:long-122.328/geo:long

Ideally, both the feed and indivual posts will
 include geotags. This
allows us to not only map the feed provider, but
 also each item of
  content.

FeedBurner recently added support for geotagging
 your feeds. Just
signin and edit your feed, then scroll down to the
 Geotag Your Feed
  option.

I am fully aware of how not-easy it is to find
 the lat/lon of a
location, but until our cameras include GPS it
 will remain an added
process. To make things slightly easier, I built
 this location finder
  page...
  http://www.vlogmap.org/finder.php

Note, it also includes the new del.icio.us tagging
 which allows us to
map specific videos. Yes, this is not an
 automated or easy process,
but we will all continue to benefit from the
 adoption of geotagging.

[videoblogging] editing theory

2005-08-16 Thread Jen Simmons

Hey everybody,
On the flash-based videoconference tonight there was a moment of
discussion where several people said, I didn't go to art school, I
didn't go to film school, I'm just doing this and learning by doing
it... some of you know more than the rest of us... keep passing on the
knowledge

(We could debate forever whether or not film / art school is worth the
time, expense and hassle... it's a debate I really don't care to have,
so I want to say I do NOT intend for this email to insinuate that
formal-training = better-vlog-maker!)

I just thought I'd offer a bit of information, that I found incredible,
for those who want it. I posted several files on the listserv website
at yahoo -- writings by Edward Dmytryk (from On Film Editing, 1984)
and Sergei Eisenstein (Methods of Montage, 1929). I used to think
stuff like this was intellectual bullshit -- but wow, when I finally
shut-up and read it all, I became SUCH a better editor. These guys are
very old school, but their ideas might just spark some good ideas in
your creative head So I offer these to you.

The .pdfs are at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/files/
in the Tutorials + Other helpful docs folder.
