[videoblogging] Re: one video format for windows and mac?

2006-03-14 Thread Bill Streeter
Here is what I do; After I compress, I open the movie in Quicktime pro
and scale it to 640x480--I don't acutally change the pixles in the
movie I just scale the window so it is playing back at this size. Then
I save it. Now when the movie plays back in a browser window or in
quicktime it will play at 640x480. Of course this won't work if you
are embedding the movie, but you can embed at the scaled up size too.
But that might only work best if you use a pop-up window, because
that's kinda big for most web layouts.

You can see an example if you go to my site and click on the quicktime
link and let the movie play back in the browser. All my movies are
encoded at 320x240 and set to play back at double size. I compress at
a fairly high bit rate so it doesn't look too bad.

Thanks, Steve. I did some searching based on that info. and found

[videoblogging] Re: Blip and Flash

2006-03-14 Thread mikehudack
Hey guys,

We're now using Flash as a default playback mechanism on blip.tv
itself. This is so that our users -- your users -- who don't have the
latest Quicktime or Windows Media installed can still watch the video.

We are NOT sending the Flash format through as a preferred format in
the RSS, and we are NOT automatically switching cross-posting to the
new Flash format. Some people will like it, and some won't.

So... In RSS, we're keeping the main enclosure as whatever video in
whatever format you uploaded, and we're using MediaRSS to name
additional formats that can be used, including the Flash. It'll be
up to the user to display the format that works best for them. Most
will use Quicktime.

In terms of cross-posting, starting today or tomorrow you'll be able
to choose a Flash cross-post template that will display Flash video in
your blog. You don't have to use it if you don't want to, but we've
tested this template carefully to make sure it works with Feedburner
(it does). This means that even if you use this Flash template and
play Flash video on your blog, Feedburner will still pick up the
Quicktime version for inclusion in your RSS feed.

These changes are all about giving people MORE choices, not less. If
you don't want to use the Flash video, you don't have to. With one
exception... right now we don't give people a choice as to whether to
have Flash as the default playback format on blip.tv itself. Our
experience has been that Flash is going to reach a wider audience than
Quicktime, but if you'd like we could probably roll this feature into
a future release.

Yours,

Mike

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Blip and Flash

2006-03-14 Thread Richard Show

Mike,A couple of questions about the flash cross posting:1) Will the flash video be embedded such that when users click it, it will play in the page (rather than pop-up window)?2) Will the users still see the screen shot that we upload on my blog page, or will they see the first frame of the flash video in place of the screen shot.
(My preference would be that they saw the screen shot, and when they click it, the video would play in the page - embedded).3) Could the cross post include a link below the flash/picture that said upload .mov version (or whatever our original format)? (Of course, I could easily creat that myself, but I'm lazy and just wondered).

Why not future proof yourself and go in a widescreen format - iPods can handle 640x360 in mpeg4. Thanks, Steve.  I did some searching based on that info. and found someone saying that another requirement for quality video on the ipod is that the dimensions be divisible by 16. So 512 x 384 seems to be the magic resultion.  I'm going to try some tests and ask a friend with a video ipod to check 'em out.  Has anyone else already tried this resolution on an ipod? [videoblogging] Re: SF Vloggercon Hotels?

2006-03-14 Thread Kitka
Okay, I just looked up the Vloggercon venue on Google Maps, searched
for hotels in the area and then read the reviews. Here are the three
closest hotels I found:

- Twin Peaks Hotel: 2160 Market St, (415) 863-2909
  Price range: $45-75/night
Pros: REALLY CLOSE, great review, inexpensive, F***ING AWESOME NAME!!!
Cons: No A/C, no online bookings (must call)

- Perramont Hotel: 2162 Market St, (415) 863-3222
  Price range: Unknown
Pros: Also very close to venue,
Cons: Not much information available online (must call)

- Beck's Motel/Motor Lodge: Market St, (415) 621-8212
  Price range: Unknown
Pros: Sometimes dubs as a gay bath house
Cons: Sometimes dubs as a gay bath house, not much information
available online (must call)

Is there anyone who would be able to call the above hotels (among
others in the area) to ask:
- Price range (standard, 1-2 adults per room)
- How many standard rooms are available at the hotel (since there may
be many of us scrambling to get space)
- Whether they would be willing to provide a special rate for
attendees of the Vloggercon

I would call but I'm at work.

I would also be interested in hearing from the Vloggercon organizers
to see if they're already working on having an official hotel where
we can get discounts for attending the Vloggercon. Someone also asked
the other day if other vloggers knew where they were staying... I'd
love to hear what everyone has in mind before I commit.

Yeah, I did the same Google Maps search... The venue sits right
between The Castro (gay) and The Haight (hippie) neighborhoods.

Being a straight man, some of the hotel reviews were a little too gay
for my comfort level...

Beck's Motel... The owners would desperately like to turn this into a
family destination, but those pesky gays keep checking in to use the
place like a bathhouse sans steam room. Late at night, half the doors
are open and the second and third floor balconies are cruised my men
looking for things that go bump in the night.

Okay, I just looked up the Vloggercon venue on Google Maps,
searched
for hotels in the area and then read the reviews. Here are the
 three
closest hotels I found:

- Twin Peaks Hotel: 2160 Market St, (415) 863-2909
  Price range: $45-75/night
Pros: REALLY CLOSE, great review, inexpensive, F***ING AWESOME
  NAME!!!

- How many standard rooms are available at the hotel (since
 there may
be many of us scrambling to get space)
- Whether they would be willing to provide a special rate for
attendees of the Vloggercon

I would call but I'm at work.

I would also be interested in hearing from the Vloggercon
organizers
to see if they're already working on having an official hotel
 where
we can get discounts for attending the Vloggercon. Someone also
 asked
the other day if other vloggers knew where they were
staying... I'd
love to hear what everyone has in mind before I commit.

2006-03-14 Thread Ron Watson

This is great, Mike, but my .flv video on blip is only taking up 1/3 of the 'screen'. It is playing in the top left corner with 2/3 of the 'screen' blank. Is this normal?ronOn Mar 14, 2006, at 10:00 AM, mikehudack wrote: Hey guys, We're now using Flash as a default playback mechanism on blip.tv itself.  This is so that our users -- your users -- who don't have the latest Quicktime or Windows Media installed can still watch the video. We are NOT sending the Flash format through as a preferred format in the RSS, and we are NOT automatically switching cross-posting to the new Flash format.  Some people will like it, and some won't. So...  In RSS, we're keeping the main enclosure as whatever video in whatever format you uploaded, and we're using MediaRSS to name "additional formats" that can be used, including the Flash.  It'll be up to the user to display the format that works best for them.  Most will use Quicktime. In terms of cross-posting, starting today or tomorrow you'll be able to choose a Flash cross-post template that will display Flash video in your blog.  You don't have to use it if you don't want to, but we've tested this template carefully to make sure it works with Feedburner (it does).  This means that even if you use this Flash template and play Flash video on your blog, Feedburner will still pick up the Quicktime version for inclusion in your RSS feed. These changes are all about giving people MORE choices, not less.  If you don't want to use the Flash video, you don't have to.  With one exception... right now we don't give people a choice as to whether to have Flash as the default playback format on blip.tv itself.  Our experience has been that Flash is going to reach a wider audience than Quicktime, but if you'd like we could probably roll this feature into a future release. the Red Victorian Bed, Breakfast and Art was quite nice. It's in the

What about the media permalink? On my blip blog page it points to the MOV but on the file detail page it points to the flv.I'd personally prefer the link to point to my MOV (I've been toying around with more and more quicktime interactivity features and want to drive the use/distribution of the quicktime format.)
In my perfect world there would be an option to Always display media permalink to source format. (or some other better worded option =P)I also might prefer my blip blog to show the quicktime movie version for the same reason.

- Twin Peaks Hotel: 2160 Market St, (415) 863-2909
  Price range: $45-75/night
Pros: REALLY CLOSE, great review, inexpensive,
F***ING
   AWESOME
  NAME!!!
Cons: No A/C, no online bookings (must call)

- Perramont Hotel: 2162 Market St, (415) 863-3222

Pros: Also very close to venue,
Cons: Not much information available online (must

Is there anyone who would be able to call the above
hotels

others in the area) to ask:
- Price range (standard, 1-2 adults per room)
- How many standard rooms are available at the hotel
(since
 there may
be many of us scrambling to get space)
- Whether they would be willing to provide a special

attendees of the Vloggercon

I would call but I'm at work.

I would also be interested in hearing from the

The Red Victorian is GREAT. I haven't
actually stayed there, but I've been through the lobby (a friend of my mother's
owns it). It's in the middle of the now faux hippie neighborhood and is
just a block or two from Golden Gate Park. A bit of a schlep to Journal
Con, but I've had good reports about the hotel itself from people who have
stayed there.

You're right though... I've
never been to SF, but from the sounds ofit the Vloggercon is not located in
the best area.

I can't afford to come to Vloggercon, but I know San Francisco.
The site for Vloggercon is in a fairly good area. It's on the outskirts of
the Castro (iow, you can avoid all those "disgusting" gays, if that's your
mindset...though the Castro is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the
city). You will find Union Square more expensive and the route from Union
Square to Vloggercon some of themore uncomfortableareas in the
city--lots of street people. Twin Peaks is lovely, though I don't know of
many hotels there and the route to Vloggercon would be interesting at best
(again, have to pass Castro St. Shudder. And unless you are part
mountain goat, the trip back up Market St. will be a killer.)

Whoever suggested Berkeley has a good idea. BART (Bay Area Rapid
Transit) plus MUNI would put you almost, if not directly, in front of Vloggercon
and there would be little need to either have a car or to walk.

Wish I could afford to join you all, but maybe you'll let me come and
meet you at dinner or coffee or something.

I'm sure there are others in the "in" group who live in SF and can
answer any questions about SF, but I wanted to stick up for the neighborhood and
let you know that it's not the undesirable area you may think it's going to
be.

I am very happy to help anybody with any questions if you e-mail me
privately so we don't clog the list with this sort of chatter.

2006-03-14 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I am unable to attend the vid
conference today and was specifically referring to the discussion of
SF hotels...

It is my personal opinion that the discussion at this time is a
one-way street where people with SF experience could offer hotel
suggestions now on the board rather than having to do it in the vid
chat later.

It was not my intention to say the vid conferences are not worth
participating.

On a somewhat related note, is there a way we can create a list of
people who are interested in attending Vloggercon? I'm thinking
something like Evite that shows maybe and yes.

I'm about 75% right now - hotel is the only thing I need to price out.

Right now several people living in San Francisco and surrounding area
are at SxSW still. You may get more recommendations if you put the
question out again in a couple of days. BTW, the Castro is one of the
nicer areas of San Francisco -- gays and lesbians though of different
sexual taste than me and others tend to display good taste (often with
flair), quality businesses that are clean which shows in that area.

[videoblogging] Feedburner stats

2006-03-14 Thread Peter Van Dijck

Brief public stats health announcement:

Jessie from Feedburner told me they had a slight delay in their daily stats rollup this morning during
which some of the counters and stats pages showed zero.

So if your Mefeedia stats in Feedburner showed 0, that should be fixed now or soon-ish.

Cheers,

[videoblogging] Re: SF Vloggercon Hotels?

2006-03-14 Thread Kitka
I've been to (and worked at) quite a few non-vlogger conventions and I
know that usually convention coordinators make deals with a few local
hotels in order to get a group rate for people attending their
convention. It would be highly desireable if the people in charge of
Vloggercon would contact a few hotels in the area in order to make
this possible. That way, we don't have to debate this or get
suggestions right, left and center.

Is Node101 organizing this convention? I would like to see them add
hotel information and special offers to the Vloggercon site to
facilitate our travel plans.

yes

hotel information will be added to the site soon
it sounds like we need to reserve blocks at *two* types of hotels
one dirt cheap and the other safer =)

i suppose people are going to insist on rooms with their own baths?
ah, the memories of Paris ;)

many of the key organizers are currently at SxSW finalizing logistical
plans in person (and doing many other things, i'm sure)
expect everything to kick into high gear the week after SxSW is over

the preliminary discussions have been taking place on the node101 list

It redirects all your Wordpress feed traffic to your Feedburner account.

This will ensure that a user who finds/subscribes to your WP feed will
get the intended FB feed.

[videoblogging] Re: Redirecting WordPress feed to Feedburner

2006-03-14 Thread Bill Streeter
Wordpress has it's own built in feed. So if you do an autodiscover
feeds on a Wordpress blog you will get the blogs built in feed
rather than the Feedburner feed. The feeds built into wordpress are
harder to track than feedburners so if you want to know how many
subscribers you really have it gets really confusing. So the plugin
redirects all the requests for your wordpress feed to the feedburner
feed so they get counted in your stats.

But I gotta say that I tried this plugin and it didn't work for me.

Yes but many readers have an auto discover function that defaults to
your wordpress feed. If you use wordpress check your server logs and

2006-03-14 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Sadly, no - the same user/pass does not work.

It would be much better to have this as a page on the Vloggercon
website. It shouldn't be too difficult to add a list me option to
the registration... or just put a notice for people to email a name
along with a maybe or yes.

I could quickly build a little form and put the name/status in a
database, but I do not think it would be as valueable if hosted on
VlogMap.

If the Vloggercon website is running PHP, I can build this little app
and have it hosted on the official site... Whoever is in control of
the site, just email me.

[videoblogging] Re: Redirecting WordPress feed to Feedburner

2006-03-14 Thread LeanBackVids.com
That solves the issue for browsers that automatically recognized feeds
for the specific site you're visiting (for example, Firefox's little
orange square in the URL feed)...

However, the WP feed will still be accessible from
domain.com/wordpress/feed/

The plugin automatically redirects ALL requests to the WP feed. The
alternate link is merely a meta declaration that specifies an
alternative format - it has nothing to do with redirects.

Anyways, I highly recommend every site that has a feed put the
following in their head...

link rel=alternate type=application/rss+xml title=RSS 2.0
href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/vlogmap; /
link rel=alternate type=text/xml title=RSS .92
href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/vlogmap; /
link rel=alternate type=text/rdf+xml title=RDF
href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/vlogmap; /
link rel=alternate type=application/atom+xml title=Atom 0.3
href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/vlogmap; /

Of course you'll need to change the link to your specific feed.

Dude, you're taking a bit of a harsh line with
this unsophisticated group that actually happens to have most of
the pre-eminent experts (who have always proven happy to help) in
the field as members.

I understand your frustration, but there are no easy answers here.
Flash is the closest thing to a universal format, but many higher
end producers have issues with its quality, etc (I am definitely not
one of these higher end producers).

Next best thing is probably to produce alternate versions for mac
(mov) and pc (wmv) if streaming is what you're after. There are
some standard settings for both that are very stable on each
respective platform.

For info on the standard settings, try searching the archives in
this group, visiting freevlog, or checking out

Rob

the best way I have found that makes the picture really clear is in fcp, it's called ipod(320x240), it looks great and is low in megabites.  The only trouble then is you need to save it as a .mov file using quicktime pro for everyone to be able to watch it.  Paul KnightOn 14 Mar 2006, at 22:09, Dog-matic wrote: aren't there any more sophisticated people out there who know Final Cut and what all the technical options are in saving video files that aren't just from someone's camcorder? -d On 3/14/06 12:47 PM, "Kitka" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I suggest following the video compression tutorials on http://freevlog.org in order to make a .mov file. If you find a way to compress to a format viewable by all people on all
computers with all
platforms from all browsers, please let me know about it! I was under the
impression that
that absolutely does not exist.

However, I can tell you that I had no trouble watching your show on blip with
the link you
provided. This may sound stupid, but is it possible that viewers were under the
impression
that they were recieving audio only because the opening screen shot+voice over
is
lengthy? I wasn't sure there was video until I waited it out. But I could see
it perfectly--no
problem. Looks good.

Might I suggest using a less touchy, more standard file format, like mpg or

I thought the Quicktime 7 upgrade would fix everyone, but evidently not. I'm
willing to burn a special iPod Movie version for those that wind up as

  takes.

What are people's experiences and recommendations with this?

I'll let you know how that goes when I contact Warner Bros. to use material
from the Prince
back catalogue for my vlog. I really dig that song Darling Nikki. It's got a
terrific beat.

[videoblogging] Re: can someone PLEASE tell me the right format to use?

2006-03-14 Thread Gena
Dude, this is like searching for the Holy Grail. I know others have
given answers to you (and have done a good job) but let me put my
pagan, base level, un-coothed two cents into the mix. If you are
still reading this then there is hope so let's rock:

1. There is no standard video delivery format for all computer
systems. At least not this week. Things change quickly here so I
gotta watch my words carefully. The one that would come close for XP,
Mac, Linux and Solaris would be .avi but the huge file size would put
off 95.9% of your viewers. Next would be Flash. As mentioned before
there are issues with video quality and you don't necessarily escape
the file size issue.

2. At best, we consider our potential viewers and the means they
connect to the Internet, their connection speed and the preferred
method of delivery, i.e. on-line, download for later viewing on a
computer/home dvd player or media player users.

3. We also consider the quality level of what we want to produced.
Some folks just want to get it out and up, some want a smooth polish
and sparkle. To each his/her/its own. But it is part of the
consideration when you are producing web video.

4. Doesn't matter if you are using Windows Movie Maker 2 or FCP HD.
It is the end result, does the video convey what you wanted.

Yes, we want to make it easier for anybody to view stuff.

Yes, we want one way for all people (speakiing only of video and not
sex).

Until the re-incarnated version of Edison gets to work on a universal
format these are the tools we have to work with.

5. The right format is the one YOU decide based on the above factors
and what you want to accomplish.

I leave you to your magic, I go now to cram the National Library of
Medicine classification list in my head. I have 20 minutes.

Piece of cake.

Gena
