Re: [videoblogging] Re: blip.tv redesign!
What's really infuriating is they still make no provision for changing user names and passwords in the Edit mode of the Distribution section where your Blogs are listed. Google changed everyone's login names from what they were with BlogSpot to a gmail address last year and ever since then, all my attempts to distribute a Blip.TV post to each of several Blogs fails. When you press the Edit button next to each listed Blog, you can change a lot of stuff in there but NOT user name and password isn't even listed.

Well I would stay away from AVCHD as it is even more highly compressed than HDV so will never be as good as HDV. Apple has supported other JVC codecs before so we may hear about that at NAB. http://www.uwdv.com/index.php/option/content/task/view/id/120 On Feb 3, 2007, at 5:12 PM, Rupert wrote: This is a question for the seriously technical among you - I don't understand enough to know if this is an incredibly stupid question - but is it not possible for some open source genius to work on open source import/export codecs for FCP or for Premiere, for unsupported formats? On the one hand, I've just been reading on message boards how excited everyone is getting about AVCHD as a high-quality, high-compression, low data-rate format, but that it can't be edited until Sony/Apple/Adobe develop an official import/export codec for it for their editing programs, which might be as much as a year away. Any ideas on open source import/export alternatives for all incompatible formats? Rupert On 4 Feb 2007, at 00:57, Kunga wrote: This JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 looks promising at only probably $1500 street. No. Parallels Workstatoin 2.1 uses the Virtualization hardware that is a part of the Core Duo Yonah processor to accomplish hardware speed in the OS X Virtual environ thanks to Intel's new architecture. Users of Parallels' solution report they perceive it to be just as fast as the native boot that Boot Camp offers. But it is true they don't support 3-D gaming yet. Yes but with no control over it's parameters. They have a Convert Selection for iPod option that just takes off and does something you have no say on HOW. Re: [videoblogging] New macs will run XP
No the other way around. The Virtualization is supeior. But not less dangerous like I thought this morning. Both native boot and Virtualization are protected from viral attacks by virtue of their temporary condition. Any attack is easily thwarted by killing the attacked volume and replacing it with a new boot volume either way. And no Windows viral attack can get at OS X at all. Virtualization is superior because it runs as a window inside OS X so that no booting back and forth is necessary to use one OS or the other - they co-reside in OS X. -- Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Apr 6, 2006, at 11:55 AM, David Meade wrote: I saw your first post, Kunga, but I didn't catch why running windows in a virtual machine is INFERIOR and much more dangerous than booting it natively .. care to explain? That's right Bill. What is a WINE-like solution Bill? Run Windows apps without the OS? How can that be? [videoblogging] Upgrading to HDV
Hi Nate, That rock sculpture building with MC looks amazing. What is your compression methodology? Can you walk us through your compression path please? On the talk with Jon I see you are using copyrighted Neil Young music to mess up the longevity due to copyright violation. Also didn't eleminate the top and bottom black bands - IE didn't CROP unnecessary bandwidth off top and bottom, thus making the posted file bigger than it needed to be. While the rock building at 640 x 360 will load on the Video iPod, the car talk @ 720 x 480 will not. Why didn't you crop it to the iPod max of 640 x 360 so it would? Was that before you knew about iPod compatible maximum dimensions? It's also too dark due to light from rear window fooling it to close down the iris more than would have been preferable. Is there no backlight switch or was there no way to manually open up the iris further or manually increase the gain? The above two great overall though. At 6MB a minute it's very a impressive compression scheme. But what happened with the racing piece? It is often times way out of focus and the compression looks way inferior. While you got it back to the Video iPod compatible 480 x 271, it is fairly funky looking compared to the other two. Is that because the HC-1 fails when it comes to action? Or is that a worse-higher compression scheme before you got better at it with the other two later? I see it's only 3MB a minute and a much smaller 480 x 271. How did you come to that dimension in the compression-crop step? Are you using Handbrake or what? Would you mind critiquing each of these videos and how you got them to the web condition from the HDV recordings? Thanks. Thanks for being an HDV HC-1 pioneer Nate. Your work is very important. Is it just me? I don't quite get what France is trying to do. You can burn songs you download from the iTunes Store to a CD and then rip for any player. Even NBC reported this morning that songs you buy at the iTunes Store can only be played on an iPod which is simply not the truth. What's up with this journalistic/ legislative failure to understand and report/legislate based on the facts? Re: [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
Thank you Steve. I totally agree with your point of view. After restarting the 1.2.3 iSquint is working now. I will try 1.3 test next. The crop in iSquint is a bit in the dark if you don't have cropping experience with farious EyeTV recordings which fall all over the map of what the cropping dimensions need to be. Is Squint ffmpegx? no way to change encoding codecs that I can see right? I completely concur with your objection to the extra steps Handbrake involves. I am hoping I can get the hang of iSquint and make it work for me too. I miss the visual feedback interface in Handbrake. But I don't miss the extra time it takes to get to Handbrake. Is there any way to get iSquint to do a two pass encode? If it works for you then cool, and it certainly will get round any input file format compatibility issues, its just that because it adds intermediate steps that take time, its not the best advise for everyone. I see it as a last resort if ffmpegx, isquint or quicktime dont do what people need. Its not wrong for you to offer it as advise, I just cant help advising that handbrake isnt the quickest/best option for most as its strength is in converting content from DVDs. Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Best PC software for mpeg 4 480 pixel resolution on the iPod
The dimensions you want to shoot for are 640 x 360 from HD and 552 x 414 from SD. The maximum bit rate you can encode in is 2500 kbps. Forget about H.264 as the max you can use with that makes a much softer image on a TV. If you use the above, it will look like a DVD on your TV. H.264 looks more like VHS. 480 x 480 = 230,400 pixels max 4x3: 552 x 414 MAX = 228,528 548 x 411 = 225,228 544 x 408 = 221,952 16x9: 640 x 360 MAX = 230,400 640 x 352 = 225,280 EyeTV2dvr Group Blog at: EyeTV2dvr Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eyetv2dvr/ EyeTV2 Blog: http://eyetv2.blogspot.com/ HDTV Group Blog at: HDTV Group http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/hdtelevision/ HDTV Blog http://hdtelevision.blogspot.com/ -- Taylor Barcroft Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Mar 3, 2006, at 4:12 PM, cooper3acd wrote: Hey, I hope this hasn't been covered already, but anyone got a suggestion on the best PC software to use to painlessly get fairly long videos (movies and or shows I own) onto the iPod at max resolutions (specs say up to 480 x 480 as mpeg 4) for viewing on the TV? [videoblogging] Podsize Calculator Bit Rate Maximums
Here's a handy tool to help you make sure you are Video iPod compatible. There's a link to it from the HandBrake documentation page which is also a great place to learn how to use HandBrake. After spending these past few days experimenting with DV to iDVD images to HandBrake Rips, I am convinced the quality is unsurpassed this way. Note the iPod bitrate limits mentioned in the HandBrake docs as well. iPod can play the following video formats: • H.264 video File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3, or 320x240 / 76,800 pixels for H. 264 formatted files Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio • MPEG-4 video File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile or 230,400 pixels Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio http://www.freesmug.org/tutorial/handbrake/ Lots of pictures of Handbrake's superior interface. The fifth-generation iPod's maximum video size is only constrainted by pixel count, being 480x480, or 230,400 pixels for MPEG-4 formatted files or 320x240 / 76,800 pixels for H.264 formatted files. http://chrisbevan.com/projects/podsize You can see by the use of the Podsize page if you are within the upper limit of pixel counts. The iPod compatibility parameters really puts it all against H.264 in my mind. You are allowed 3 times as many pixels and size if you do not use H.264. You are also allowed over 3 times the bit rate without H.264. I tried using the maximum dimensions and bit rate for the Olympic Women's Figure Skate Final HD recording I made with EyeTV2 and the 62 minute piece came out to 1.13 GB. I realize that is very big. I am not trying to discuss posting sizes here. Still working out the details of what compromise we make on that front. Just trying to help clarify how good an encode you can get and still be Video iPod compliant. Anyway, this post may be redundant as I don't read they all any more. But thought these two web addresses might be helpful to those of you who are sill wondering what is the best way to prepare your footage for video iPod compatible postings. -- Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: NBC Olympic Blog Is Awesome
Well I guess we have different interpretations of the term video blog. There are definitely Olympian videos not only ads. Profiles of different Olympians with their comments on the games and how they got there are all over that site. There are like 15 second Nissan Xtera ads on the front of them, but I never saw a video that was only an ad. You need to get off the home page and drill down to specific articles all of which have accompanying videos. As for the ability to comment and interact, I'm old school and don't care about that and don't think that is necessarily the criteria for a video blog. To me, a video blog is any site that has video on it that I can play and control and save to my HD. http://nbcolympics.com -- Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Feb 13, 2006, at 5:03 AM, Steve Garfield wrote: The whole beauty of putting video into blogs is that it enable a conversation. Re: [videoblogging] Re: NBC Olympic Blog Is Awesome
Look. I appreciate any effort NBC makes to adopt these new media. So I am not going to sit there and pretend that I am better than they are by putting them down. They are trying. That is the point. You don't have to get all high and mighty about how bad they are when they are obviously trying to adapt as best they can. I think it's great they are doing ANYTHING AT ALL. Just because they are technically incompetent is no reason to put them down. ; ^ ) Wild out of synch audio on that Curling tutorial. But for me, this has NOTHING to do about content. It's all about the media not the message. You guys are way too hung up on content. I really don't pay taht much attention to the content of anything. I am always paying attention to the form of the media not what's in it. There are a lot of videos in each specific article about Olympians. That to me is cool. Well I'm not opening the new box until I have the CASH in my hand and the Dual 2.5 is passed on to the lucky local here in the Bay Area. But thank you for the words of support. FYI - I would WANT to know if any member of this list has anything video production related FOR SALE including cameras, computers, lights, tripods etc. For the owners of this list to think this type of post is not appropriate, I find both offensive and blindsighted. Please email me directly if you have anything for sale like that if we can't do it on list. Could we take a vote how many would NOT WANT for sale items from fellow list member posted here? I bought this NEW last June 4, 2005. It was one of the last to be manufactured at this speed in April of 2005. So it is Rev B and final Rev of this model. It's in perfect running order without a scratch. It has 4.5 GB RAM and comes with TWO 160 GB SATA drives, all new unused keyboard, mouse and cables. The current dual core 2.3 GHz Mac sells for $2500 with only 512 MB of RAM and a single 250 GB HD. So this one is faster and has more RAM and 320 GB of hard drive space. Tiger 10.4.4 and iLife '06. ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 128 MB of Video RAM. Has one ADC connector and one DVI connector on it. ADC to DVI adapter is only $30 from Dr. Bott. Comes with a DVI to VGA adaptor. Can support two 1920 x 1200 Apple 23 or Dell 24 Samsung digital displays very easily. I also upgraded the firmware on the DVDR drive in it so it does record Dual Layer DVDs. It's a Pioneer DVR-108 with firmware revision 1.20 and is fully supported to burn from the finder although I use Toast 7 Titanium for all my burns. I recently burned a copy of iLife '06 with it, which is a dual layer original, and it copied the original perfectly. This would be plus you pay shipping. I think it weighs about 60 pounds in the original box. Make me an offer I can't refuse off list. -- Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: CSI Google Rocketboom Amanda [video]
That would be something Andrew has yet to tell us. But did any of you notice the Friday Rocketboom episode that is completely showing the (fake for laughs) out-takes that the CSI folks didn't use? Hilarious. Congrats Amanda on an outstanding performance. lol. -- Taylor Barcroft http://www.blogger.com/profile/11159903 New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 On Feb 4, 2006, at 10:01 AM, robert a/k/a r wrote: Same thought here. http://www.ag-hvx200.com/ How bout this idea? A Video Podcast series about ONE Camera? Now this is the future. But nothing since December 8, 2005. The content is fairly lame. But I like the concept. Sorry to post such a lame vlog. Re: [videoblogging] Re: CSI Google Rocketboom Amanda [video]
Forgot to mention the original HDTV 1920 x 1080 recording is 136 MB. Looks and sounds pretty amazing considering 133 MB have been removed. There is one brief audio gap of silence in Amanda's delivery I was unable to avoid although it is not in the original recording. Must be a glitch in the source code that the encoders can't understand. - - Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Webcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Feb 3, 2006, at 11:05 AM, Kunga wrote: OK.
