I rarely have issues with touch id. I played with my mom's xs max
today a bit more. Getting down the way to get to the home screen and
the app switcher didn't take to long. Also pulling down notifications
and going to the control center. It didn't feel as nice as doing these
things on my 7plus

There may have just been other factors involved because Face Id uses infrared
and it should make no difference whether it's light or dark, here is what
Apple says:
Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as wearing
cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If
