I'd monitor the wifi strength over time. If it stays pretty consistently strong then there's no difference between using your friend's wifi or any other wifi. For me personally, I'd worry more about dropped connections and having to restart the update process than I would about a corrupted

I'm not sure I've ever skipped an update, but my understanding is that Apple's fixes are cumulative, so you should be able to go from IOS 7.0.3 directly to IOS 7.1, without having to go through 7.0.4 on the way. Of course, there's always a chance there's a bug in the update/install code, but
