Re: Differences between the iPhone 7, an iPhone 8?

2018-11-08 Thread Gordon
there really isn't much difference as far as we're concerned. the 7 and
8 are the same size, but the 8 has a glass front and back to allow for
wireless charging which the 7 doesn't have. T-mobile sells the 7 for
$449 which is $150 cheaper than the 8. If you're wanting the 7 or 8
plus, those will be more expensive of course.

RE: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Arlene,

Not sure what is the issue for you, but for me this is how it works (I assume
you know how to pull up the Control Centre and find the Screen Recording icon),
here is what I do once I am on it:

1. I swipe down and Voiceover says Open Controls
2. I double tap and Voiceover says Screen Recording, Heading, Actions available
3. I flick right and Voiceover says Start Recording button, I flick right once
more and Voiceover says Microphone Off, Switch Button Off
4. I double tap and Voiceover says On
5. I swipe left once and Voiceover says Start Recording Button, I double tap
and Voiceover will make a couple of beeps as it does a sort of 3, 2, 1
count-down before recording starts.
Now as soon as recording starts you will suddenly hardly hear Voiceover any
more since it speaks out of the earpiece speaker so you may have to hold your
phone up closer to your ear depending on how good your hearing is.
You can now press the home button a couple of times to get out of screen
recorder and Control Panel, but the recording will continue and all gestures
and screens where you go will be recorded.
In order to stop screen recorder you have to again go into Control Centre >
Screen Recording and double tap the Stop Recording button.
Once you do this the video will be saved to your camera roll.

Sieghard

Sieghard , again, we've got to thank you, for you needing others to test the
recording on their phones, for one thing we weren't aware of the screen
recording feature in the phone, that you clarified in the message below isn't
an app, so thanks for informing us of it. the screen recorder, sounds quite
useful, and we really want to learn it, though we need a bit more help with it.
We couldn't find any of the controls, even the microphone. Somehow I'm missing
something not finding these controls. You're instructions are clear, but as I
said we're not finding the controls, and as I said this is something we really
want to learn to use. By the way we changed the rotor settings, we tried all of
them, thinking that it might have helped, but didn't do anything. There's so
many useful things to do with it including making tutorials. We're greatful for
your assistance in using the screen recorder, even though at this point it has
a bug in it.We meant to be helpful along with us as far as the testing, which
is not necessary any longer since there's been enough list members that have
tested the screen record along with your experience. So, if there's something
that we're missing, please let us know, and thanks again for always sharing
your own experiences, how to instructions and knowledge.

Hello Arlene,

Voice Memos is a completely different app, in a way, screen recording is not an
app but a function of iOS. I know Voice memos and other recording apps work
fine and I see that some people can make a screen recording where Voiceover can
be heard although not very loud. I did include instructions on how to enable
the microphone for screen recordings in my original message, you do it by
flicking up or down on Screen Recorder to "Open Controls" and double tap, then
locate the Microphone toggle.

Sieghard, we thought we would try testing with the se phones, and this is what
we found out. As to your instructions, we went into control center, and
located screen recorder, we didn't spend much time with it and we'll definitely
spend more time with it later. We didn't find a setting to enable the
microphone, however it seemed to be working corectly. If this isn't the same
thing I'm getting ready to tell you about then I apologize. However this is
what we have. In the phone, in the extras phone using the voice memo recorder
it's working as you want it too, recording ourvoices and voice over's voice
very clearly. this is with using one of the se phones version 12.1, nad on the
other se phone using the prior software version 11.4. The 2 se phones except
for the operating system are identical. Thanks for asking your question,
getting us interested in this because recording some things may be useful from
time to time.At this time we won't be doing any demos, but this would be one
way to get one done. On the phone with the current software we downloaded a
recording app last summer and hadn't done much with it so far, but it works
just as well as the voice memo does, and does actually work the same way

Speedwise, the SE can still hold its own. I was getting more hanging and apps
taking longer to open, switching between apps and things like that to where it
was getting noticeable for me though. My business line I use for mainly
receiving and making calls. All the other work related stuff like alerts,
texting, calendar look ups, email, etc I do off of my main phone. Thus I
decided to upgrade.
I'm still not a fan of Face ID and it's fairly frequent that I'm prompted for a
passcode. I know the new gestures to replace the home button are there, but I
simply don't find them as convenient or intuitive as just pressing the home
button. Had they come out with a second generation SE, I would have snatched
that sucker up in a second.
I know Apple talks up the new gestures a lot, but I find them to be bleh and at
the very least a step back in user experience.
What I ended up doing too is to enable the assistive touch button and place it
in my dock sort of as the fifth app there. Right between the second and third
apps.
I then changed the behavior of the button so that one tap (VO double tap) would
act as the home button and a double tap (VO triple tap) would be the control
panel. With the long press and hold activating the menu for the rest of the
assistive touch options.
This for me works since I can use the XR more comfortably as a one handed
device and not bother with the swipe up gesture as the home button as I find
just tapping the assistive touch icon much faster. That and I'm lazy too I
guess. Makes unlocking the phone quicker for me as well.

RE: got a new toy!

2018-11-08 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz

I plan on using all of my phones, it's pretty easy to move the sim card

to using the ESIM, that may no longer be possible to do.

So, I decided to add another iphone to my collection, the Iphone XR, so
I have an XR, an Iphone 8 and an Iphone SE. It's a nice phone, the
Apple store only had one case for it which was an Otterbox.
Unfortunately the Mophie juice pack is not available for this phone, at
least not yet. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get used to not
having a home button but it wasn't too bad, basically a short swipe up
from the bottom takes you home and a longer swipe opens the app
switcher. The vibrations are helpful but once you do it a few times,
you learn how far you must swipe up for each function. Battery life
seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the way
down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my collection.

I find that when I am doing a lot of walking, the iphone SE is more
comfortable in the pocket. The XR is slightly bigger than the iphone 8,
it's ok in the pocket but you definitely know it's there a lot more. It
will be interesting to see how the Intel modem performs in the XR
compared to the Qualcom modem that is in the iphone 8, there wre
actuallly two different models of the previous iphone generations, one
used a Qualcom modem and the other used an Intel modem. Since Apple and
Qualcom had a falling out, all of the new iphones use Intel modems.

That is the default behavior even with an external bluetooth QWERTY keyboard.
I think Apple assumes text messages are not needing paragraphs, or even hard
returns.
In Excel, you can do alt-Enter, but I have no idea if that works in text
messages.
I doubt it.
I just use punctuation in messages.

RE: How do you get regular UberPool instead of express?

I should have asked what is the nearest large city to you. I wonder if they
have changed their plans based on the size of the town you are in.

Hi, I don’t: it says the pool initially, but if I select that, it is only
talking about the express pool, where you have to walk a little bit from your
pick up point and wait, and then be dropped off somewhere near your drop off
address instead of directly at the place. There’s no way to change it.

Can’t figure out how to do it; Wish that they were separate options the way
they used to be.

Re: Force return with a Braille display

2018-11-08 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

You don't have to lock the Option key. You can press dot 2 with dot 7 and the
spacebar and then do a Return (dot 8). If you use dot 7 with dot 2, it lets you
enter one character and then unlocks the Option key again.

Best,
Anna

for those of you who use the Lire RS app, since its latest update, it closes on
me all of a sudden, losing the article I was just reading! I uninstalled,
reinstalled, set up everything again, and it’s still doing the same thing! I
want to throw it out the window! What ideas/suggestions might you guys have

And I use a lot RSS feeds for tech news especially. thanks for info before I go

Right now, all of the sole treadmills are on a very deep discount sale, whether
directly from them or from any local store that might happen to carry them. So
for instance, the F 63 which has been mentioned here, is right now selling for
around $900. That would not include any charge for delivery and set up of
course.

Re: Treadmill with Bluetooth connectivity and accessible app

2018-11-08 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Tracy,
I think this is an old manual. I saw a reference to a copyright date of 2004.
Also, the description doesn’t seem to match what I read in the treadmill
review, in that they’re talking about a dotmatrix display, where as the review
talks about an LCD screen. And as you said, there’s no reference to Bluetooth.
So I think it’s anybody’s guess with the new one might actually look like.

 Hi Tracy,
I hope to see that treadmill this weekend at a local sporting goods store
which has it in stock. The reviews for the apps are universally horrid. So
I wouldn’t count on much there. I mean, it has one star from pretty much
everybody who read it. The only thing I don’t like based on what I read is
that they review did not mention a stop button or a safety lanyard. Since
I have neuropathy, I’m hoping that was just an oversight in the review.
The next model up, the F 80, is also reviewed on that same website, and
they do mention both a start button and the safety lanyard. It’s more
expensive. But you can’t put a price on your health and safety.

Must be nice to be rich *smile*
I would love an XR, I could afford one but I really just don't see the need at
this point and I never found much use for having more than one cell phone. When
I bought my current 6S Plus I first kept my 5S and thought I would use it at
home, for Audible and all that. I quickly noticed I just never did so I sold it.

So, I decided to add another iphone to my collection, the Iphone XR, so I have
an XR, an Iphone 8 and an Iphone SE. It's a nice phone, the Apple store only
had one case for it which was an Otterbox.
Unfortunately the Mophie juice pack is not available for this phone, at least
not yet. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get used to not having a home
button but it wasn't too bad, basically a short swipe up from the bottom takes
you home and a longer swipe opens the app switcher. The vibrations are helpful
but once you do it a few times, you learn how far you must swipe up for each
function. Battery life seems really good especially if you turn the brightness
all the way down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my
collection.

Sieghard, I meant to tell you in the last message, we never accomplished making
any recordings since we didn't find any in the photo area, but we're going to
try your additional directions from the last of your messages I replied too.
Even though it's not working up to par and hopefully this bug will be fixed, as

Also, at this point I don't think it is necessary to send another screen
recording video since enough people with different devices have now confirmed
this and this is a bug which is universal so hopefully all those who have
checked it out have emailed accessibil...@apple.com requesting that this will
be fixed since when the feature was first introduced you could make a screen
recording which included Voiceover as well as any comments you spoke just fine.
It was a wonderful method to send a demo to a developer if there were issues
with the app showing them exactly what the problem was whether it was an
unlabelled button, something one could not get to with Voiceover etc.

Sieghard, as it turns out I don't think we got into the screen recording last
night as I was thinking, but we would like to test it and learn about it since
we weren't aware of it. Anyway we find screen recording in the control center,
but how do you begin the recording? After you let me know how to start the
recording, then we could send the recording to you. We know how to activate it,
remove it and move it around, but Wayne can't find the controls for it, so if
you could tell us how to find the controls and how to use it, to start the
recording and stop the recording, that would be very ehlpful, we really want to
learn this. If it's on the ipad too, we'll try it on there as well. We're
coming along with the phone, but we're still learning as it's just been from
earlier this year that we got these se phones, so your knowledge, and others on
here is so helpful. there's always something else to learn. Thank you.

Arlene,

If you made a screen recording it would be in your Photos app, could you
please send it to the list or myself directly as an attachment so I can hear
how it sounds differently or, as you say, normally, this would help me in my
discussion with Apple Accessibility.

All you have to do is locate the video in the Photos app, double tap on it,
then find the Share button, select Mail and send it to Viphone@GoogleGroups.com
if you want to post it to the list or send it to me directly, the email address

I would really be very interested since you would be the first person who
can make a screen recording where Voiceover is heard loud and clear.

we did want to try both. As I said I'm quite sure we did test screen recording

silent video.

If you double tapped on it before chance are you made some screen recordings
already, just check your Photos app and delete them if you accidently created
some.

All you have to do is locate the video in the Photos app, double tap on it,
then find the Share button, select Mail and send it to Viphone@GoogleGroups.com
if you want to post it to the list or send it to me directly, the email address
is siegh...@live.ca

I would really be very interested since you would be the first person who
can make a screen recording where Voiceover is heard loud and clear.

Thanks,

Sieghard, we followed your instructions, and I think we tested recording in
both screen recorder and voice memo and with both our voices and voice over can
be heard very clearly. I know the concern you have isn't about voice memo, but
we did want to try both. As I said I'm quite sure we did test screen recording

I hope someone has the answer to remedy this situation with screen recorder for

useful in differing situations, that we weren't thinking about.

Right now, all of the sole treadmills are on a very deep discount sale, whether
directly from them or from any local store that might happen to carry them. So
for instance, the F 63 which has been mentioned here, is right now selling for
around $900. That would not include any charge for delivery and set up of

Sieghard, we thought we would try testing with the se phones, and this is
what we found out.
On the phone with the current software we downloaded a
recording app last summer and hadn't done much with it so far, but it works
just as well as the voice memo does, and does actually work the same way
including recording our voices and the voice over's voice just how you want it
to work. It's called rev. We were going through the apps on applevis and that's
where we found it. However, down the way and when time permits we may end up
doing some tutorials professionally. We're all about recording.

Hello,

I was trying to do a screen recording today to show somebody how to do
something with Voiceover. Unfortunately I realized that now in iOS 12 there is
no way I could think of to make such a screen recording which includes what
Voiceover is speaking. This used to be not easy in iOS 11, either, but it could
be accomplished by using a Bluetooth or wired external speaker. Now Voiceover
is switched to the Earpiece of the phone where even at full volume it can be
barely heard and even though with a Bluetooth speaker Voiceover was speaking
loud and clear via the Bluetooth speaker, nothing was picked up by the
microphone. My own voice could be heard as I was explaining my gestures, but
nothing else.

I would really appreciate it if others who have newer phones than me could
test this to see if they get the same result. I have a 6S Plus so if people

I'm 6-2 FT tall. So for me, the longer and wider belt for me was a necessity.
It has a capacity of up to 350 LBS. I fluctuate between 212 and 230 LBS
throughout the year depending on the season (holiday eating here we come baby)

 Hi Tracy,
I hope to see that treadmill this weekend at a local sporting goods store

The next model up, the F 80, is also reviewed on that same website, and

If you press dots 7 and whatever the option key is plus enter, that should
force a return. That is how you do it with a Bluetooth keyboard is option enter.

Re: Treadmill with Bluetooth connectivity and accessible app

Hi Mary, here’s a link to the treadmill. Unfortunately, I don’t know what date
this manual is for, and I can’t find anything about the Bluetooth.

2018-11-08 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Tracy,
Where did you find the manual for this treadmill? I assume it might be on the
manufacturers website. I was there, but wasn’t really looking for a manual.
Then I went to that treadmill reviews site, the same one where Cristobal linked
to for his treadmill.

RE: got a new toy!

2018-11-08 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
With my XR, I bumped my SE to my business cell since my trusty 5S was giving me
more and more trouble. Slightly annoying that the SE's a 64 GB device since
it's got nothing on it now, but oh well. Slowness aside on the 5S which is to
be expected for such an old device, it started to act all weird on me. VO
wasn't reading the phone numbers and often, it would automatically call people.
The 5S has a broken volume up button, a touch ID that doesn't work and a rear
camera that's also broken. My wife changed the battery on it over the summer so
as a super simple internet device, it can still work. She's going to buy the
replacement camera module ($12 or so) and try to fix it. We've got nothing to
lose. It's already broken.
We'll probably use it as a security camera or something. She's also got designs
on taking it out with her to rack up more shoppkick and iBotta points by
piggybacking off of her cell's personal hotspot. We're going to use that sucker
for something until the wheels fall off.

I also got an XR to go with my iPhone 7 Plus, which just got a nice new
battery, thank you Apple for the rather inexpensive battery replacement program.

I retired in old iPad mini too, which I used for lots of book reading. So the
7+ is now taking over for that phone. I only have one working phone. That is
just one phone line. But I think I will be set for several years to come with
these phones and their big batteries.

Re: Treadmill with Bluetooth connectivity and accessible app

2018-11-08 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi Mary, I did see the reviews for the app. They are pretty awful. That is why
I’m hoping the Bluetooth capabilities can bypass the app and sync up with Apple
health or my fitness pal.

I read the manual for the F63, and I’m pretty sure it has a safety key.
Definitely check it out and let us know. I did not walk on the treadmill, but
from what I’ve read, it sounds like it’ll be very quiet.

Hi Tracy,
I hope to see that treadmill this weekend at a local sporting goods store which
has it in stock. The reviews for the apps are universally horrid. So I wouldn’t
count on much there. I mean, it has one star from pretty much everybody who
read it. The only thing I don’t like based on what I read is that they review
did not mention a stop button or a safety lanyard. Since I have neuropathy, I’m
hoping that was just an oversight in the review. The next model up, the F 80,
is also reviewed on that same website, and they do mention both a start button
and the safety lanyard. It’s more expensive. But you can’t put a price on your
health and safety.

Re: got a new toy!

2018-11-08 Thread Mary Otten
I also got an XR to go with my iPhone 7 Plus, which just got a nice new
battery, thank you Apple for the rather inexpensive battery replacement program.

I retired in old iPad mini too, which I used for lots of book reading. So the
7+ is now taking over for that phone. I only have one working phone. That is
just one phone line. But I think I will be set for several years to come with
these phones and their big batteries.

RE: Question about backup iPhone

2018-11-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you tab through the options in iTunes there is one spot where it will tell
you when the last backup was done, i.e. it will give you the date and time.
Also, you could additionally do an iCloud backup in Settings > Your Account (at
the very top)

Subject: Question about backup iPhone

Hello,

My iPhone 6S IOS 12 latest version has some problems and I got an appointment
with Apple. I read that I must backup my phone before the visit. I clicked on
backup in iTunes. However, can I be sure that I really did the backup, or what
else do I have to do? Also, where can I find the backup file in my computer?

Re: Force a return in text message with braille display

2018-11-08 Thread Richard Turner
That is the default behavior even with an external bluetooth QWERTY keyboard.
I think Apple assumes text messages are not needing paragraphs, or even hard
returns.
In Excel, you can do alt-Enter, but I have no idea if that works in text
messages.
I doubt it.
I just use punctuation in messages.

2018-11-08 Thread Gerardo Corripio
for those of you who use the Lire RS app, since its latest update, it closes on
me all of a sudden, losing the article I was just reading! I uninstalled,
reinstalled, set up everything again, and it’s still doing the same thing! I
want to throw it out the window! What ideas/suggestions might you guys have
aside from again uninstalling, reinstalling, etc? This is getting frustrating!
And I use a lot RSS feeds for tech news especially. thanks for info before I go

got a new toy!

2018-11-08 Thread Mike Arrigo

Re: Treadmill with Bluetooth connectivity and accessible app

2018-11-08 Thread Traci Duncan
Mary, have you seen the Sole Treadmill? I went and looked at the F63 and really
liked it. It has the controls on the arms, and most of the buttons on the unit
are large rubber ones. The remaining buttons look like they may be easy to
braille. The F63 now has bluetooth capability and can connect up to three or
four different apps. I am hoping this part is accessible. After I walk on the
treadmill, I hope to see my status inside the Apple health app. The F63 model
is the one that is tempting me, the $899 price is the best I have seen.

2018-11-08 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Brag brag. Brag. Brag. Brag. Some of us have to make more of an effort to
maintain our svelte-like figure you know.
My first choice is to go for a stroll with my wife. For this, I use the Map My
Walk app. It had some VO bugs in the past, but it seems they've since been
resolved and now it plays well with VoiceOver. I aim for at the very least 2
miles a day and more often than not, am around 3 to 3.5 miles for a walk a day.
With more on the weekends or when I really want to go for a pseudo-hike. Where
we we live though, going for a walk every day isn't always feasible. 100º or
more weather and now, we're into the Santa Ana wind season. We're expecting
another event later today and tomorrow. Not going to go walking in all that
nasty wind.`
Since I work from home and have to make more of the effort to get moving, I
wanted to get something that was better put together. I've tried going cheap
with treadmills in the past, but yeah . . . if you're a bigger/taller person,
you need to spend a little more if you don't want to be stepping on something
that's going to shake every single time you take a step.
I had a spread sheet of the models with their corresponding specs and once I
identified the ones I really was interested in, I added them to my Honey coupon
list and waited for a deal. It took around three months, but when the Amazon
alert came in, I was all over the Nautilus like ugly on an ape. There were also
some machines that supposedly work with the Google Fitness app/service, but I
didn't want to be tied into a paid subscription plan. Being able to check my
results after my walk is good enough for me.
A side note, the guy Amazon contracted to put my treadmill together was deaf
mute. We communicated via text message on our iPhones. Technology man. The
great equalizer.

Hi Reg,

Go ahead and order two, I'll stop by and pick it up in a few weeks, take you

Just looked this T618 up on Amazon.ca and while in the article/review it said
something about $1,299 which I assume was US Dollars, on Amazon.ca this thing
