Re: verizon and IPhone
I realize Android accessibility isn't up to snuff with respect to the iPhone, which is why I have an iPhone. I just thought that when someone said the iPhone could do things that Android could not, they were talking about functionality and not accessibility. When I think of being able to use a memory card on an Android phone or being able to access it like a drive when attached to my PC instead of using iTunes I think of what you can do with an Android phone that you can't do with an iPhone. IMHO, there's plenty of bashing on both sides. I've seen iPhone and Mac users bash Android and Windows users and make equally outrageous claims about VoiceOver and the IOS/OSX platform in general. IMHO, I think some people just need to defend what they're using and the choices they've made. I like to think that I'm anti-bashing. I use Ubuntu and an iPhone, but I don't make a religion out of either, and I don't think I've ever run down Symbian, Windows, Macs or any other technology. To each his own and the more accessible options the better! BTW, the Droid is a line of smart phones from Motorola. I assume you're referring to Android phones in general. On 03/07/12 22:02, James Mannion wrote: That's for sure. The droid accessibility is just not near as complete. It will not let you examine anything by word or by character unless you are in an edit field and are using a keyboard and only certain ones of the onscreen keyboards from what I understand. It will not let you navigate by items. This is all in explore by touch which you can't even get a new enough version of Android on most phones yet to even have. Explore by touch limits you to moving your finger around the screen to find things and if you miss it, oh well. No other way to navigate to it. You are also limited to activating things by lifting your finger after you find it and then a single tap on what you want to activate. Sure the single tap could be convenient, but you have to be exactly on what it is you want to activate. So if it's really small, you better be good at that. I have heard the fans go on and on about how much better this is because it is like the sighted world does it. Sure, but their eyes can direct their finger with little error possibility. I wish the droid world were equally as accessible. The fans seem to see it through rose colored glasses and boy they love to bash and put down the IPhone. I think they find the IPhone a threat to their world over there or something. Listen to That Android Show and count the number of negative comment opportunities they create and jump on those that they otherwise find. That is the one thing that particularly ticks me off about that podcast. They are so, so, so outwardly expressively anti-IPhone. Don't bother askingthose fans for their answer to the droid accessibility shortcomings and therefore concerns. If they are not in favor of the comment, my experience is they ignore it. The one they will tell you more or less is that they very much want people on 4G and not 3G. They can manage many more customers on their 4G network at less cost to them. The other reason I have heard elsewhere is that carriers are becoming discontent with the fact they can't have the kind of control with putting bloteware at all on the IPhone like they obviously can with Android. Apple has a heavy hand in telling the carriers what they will and will not do with the IPhone. I feel absolutely no sympathy for the carriers on that one. Re: best app for reading text files
I bought this app too and do like it. The feature to import direct from the web worked, though it is a bit pedantic about the absolutely full address including the http:// prefix before it worked. But having done that, the Done button did nothing. I tapped on the new file too and it said selected, but it did nothing, and nothing took me back to a main screen or any other screen. I used Home to close it and re-open it and like all these apps, it was where I left it. So had to resort to the app manager and delete it from there app switcher if you like, but starting it fresh got over it, but terrible cumbersome if you need to download several books. I have tons and can share links to them if there's a demand. Project Gutenberg can supply endless .txt books too of course. This could be as useful as the old DOS readit app from years ago, if it does all the things it is meant to, reliably and simply. But yes, when I got to read the file of over 100k, it went from paragraph to paragraph using blank lines as block markers. This appealed to me given it was my poetry book I'd loaded, so it did quite good with the metre of the verses. I tried to contact the authors/developers to point out my issue, another Italian product I note, no response yet, but too soon too. RE: Verizon and I Phone
If you are specifically talking about the Motorola's, some have physical keyboards with arrow keys. The arrow keys can be used to go through the icons on the screen. However I switched to the IPhone because they did ann update which made it difficult to dial a number. For people who cannot see the IPhone is definitely easier to use. However for sighted people it's totally a matter of preference. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of James Mannion Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2012 11:03 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: verizon and IPhone That's for sure. They try very hard at times to push people over to Android instead. I have heard two reasons for that. One of them Verizon actually admitted to when I was in the store recently. On 7/3/12, Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote: True, but I find it hard to believe that Verizon would offer the iPhone in some locations but not others. Technically, there's no reason it won't work wherever Verizon has coverage, and I'm sure it's one of their most popular phones. It was a big deal when ATT lost their exclusivity to the iPhone and Verizon started to also carry the iPhone. Again, as I suggested earlier, I'd check out some national resources, like Verizon's web site or an 800 number. I guess you could always order an iPhone from Verizon on line if your local Verizon retailer won't sell you one for some reason. On 03/07/12 14:41, Dianne B. Dark Sky Weather Prediction App?
Has anyone tried this app with VO? It looks pretty cool, but it's $3.99. The info page talks a lot about their animated radar views, but I'm not sure if there is any textual info for VO to latch onto. The app is supposed to be incredibly accurate at predicting the weather short term to within minutes of when it might rain and for how long. Re: Jailbreaking
Hi, the biggest reason for me to jailbreak is because I use my Google Voice number as my main cell phone number, and jailbreaking allows me to seamlessly make outbound calls which originate from my Google Voice number. I don't have to use a specific app like nonjailbreakers have to. For example, if I am browsing the web and see a number, I can double-tap it like anyone else can and call it and it originates from my Google Voice number. Another thing I can do is send text messages out which also originate from my Google Voice number. So, using the native messages app, or my favorite one Bite SMS, I can text just like everyo0ne else and it's all through Google Voice number. This means that I can hide my real cell phone number. I said one reason, but I thought of another. Themes. I love that I can theme my phone. In fact, just to throw people off, lately I've had the Windows XP theme on my iPhone. It makes the home screen look like a windows xp desktop, and it plays the xp logon sound when I unlock and the log off sound when I lock the phone. On the screen instead of slide to unlock, it shows slide to log in. I have many more tweaks, but themes and Google Voice are my 2 main reasons. -- Raul A. Re: Jail breaking
Hi, you can get your apps you paid for back even if you restore from ajjailbreak. Most apps paid via Cydia are done through paypal or Amazon payments. Both easy to set up. Apps like PWN Tunes can also be paid for via cydia, but you can pay them directly if you wish. However when you pay them directly, I think it costs more. Then there are other places which do their own charging. For example PDA Net and Google Voice Phone Extension. They accept Paypal, but you do it through their own site. In the case of PDA Net, I received an unlock code which I put into the program and it works. Hope that helps. -- Raul A. a note about approving new users
Hi all. In case some of you have friends who are trying to get approved for the list, please let them know that when they subscribe, they need to give a brief introduction and why they are joining. This is to try and prevent spammers from joining. So this means that if I see an email address which is requesting to be added to the list, but there is nothing written, I will not accept it. This is because usually spammers will leave that blank, or if they don't leave it blank, they will usually put in a generic message about how this is cool, or I want to learn more. So, be sure that if you ever resubscribe, or a friend does, that something mentioning viphone, blind users and accessibility or voice over is mentioned. something not so generic. We will look into voiceover functionality, actually we haven't taken that into account yet. I hope we can add button labeling to help. For speech output we depend on our provider. They have changed the voice a few months ago. We are considering other options as well. For now, do check the voice speed setting in 'settings' in the app, you can set it to speak slower or faster. This may help in understanding it better. Thanks again, we are working hard on further improving the app, and feedback like this is what keeps us going at it. Many people expect so much and are fast to complain. Voice Answer has many uses, but we know it is not perfect. Still, we believe it's a great app and we will continue to make it even better! I was the one that just sent a review to you guys. I gave you 4 out of 5 for Voice Answer. Thanks for incorporating text messaging in your app. I also like how you got the robot to read your text message before you send it. I'm a visually impaired person that uses Voiceover so there are some accessibility issues but they're easy to work around. I got a couple of suggestions, and they are as follows: 1. For Voiceover users, there are 2 unlabelled buttons. One says dimmed button, and the other one says button which I assume is where you press to talk to Eve. If you could label the button to make it say, Tap here to talk or something like that, blind users would know where to press. I have some sight so I know where the robot is, but others might not. 2. In one of your other apps called Voice Ask, when it first came out, Eve sounded human. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3ND950SWOo to see what I mean. In that video, you could see that Eve sounded more human, and although you can't hear it in that video, she even took breaths. It would be cool if you brought her back in Voice Answer, or better yet, both apps. Compare her to how she sounds in that video to the way she sounds now. I think you'll find her a bit robotic sounding. 3. If people like the way she sounds now, all robotic and everything, then there should be an option in both apps' settings to choose which voice people want. I really enjoy this app and I can't wait to see what kind of improvements will be added in the next update. Thanks for your time. Shawn Krasniuk= ---End Message---

RE: question about nfb newsline mobile app
Hi, If you double tap the publications button at the top left, then explore that screen, toward the bottom you should find a button called something like publications options. Double tap that and you will find buttons for favorites, magazines, etc. Double tap on magazines and you will have a list of all magazines. RE: Book Mark for self created audio files, advice needed
One thought might be to use GoldWave on your PC and set a mark at each tone index, then split the book into separate files at those marks. Then, you could edit the tag information for each file so they would be treated as one album. Then, when you bring it into iTunes, you could further edit the tag information and change the kind to Audio Book. Then, each page (or whatever the tone indexing was) will be its own file. GoldWave has a fully functional demo, but is only about $50 to purchase. www.goldwave.com The manual is accessed off the help menu and is in html so very easy to navigate. Virtually everything can be done form the keyboard for the editing functions. I suspect there is similar audio editing programs on the Mac side, but I haven't used any of them. This would all be very time consuming, but it might get you what you want. RE: indaisy vs read2go for recorded audio daisy books
You can create your own daisy audiobooks wit a program at: http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl The site appears to be down at the moment, but maybe you can try later to see if it's back up. The program is easy to install and once you figure out how to use it, it's fairly simple to use. You'll also need some sort of mp3 merging utility like mp3 Merge or Goldwave, etc. This is how I generate my own Daisy audio files. RE: Can an iPhone work on both ATT and Virazone?
Nope, iPhones 4 and earlier are not cross compatible. You could get an ATT phone to work on T-Mobile because they're both GSM and probably the other smaller regional GSM providers, but Sprint and Verizon and Sprint aren't GSM so it's a no go. RE: Pedestrian Navigation
Mapquest4Mobile is free and you can set the route to pedestrian. The new version has lots of unlabelled buttons. I'm working on a set of instructions for how to label them, but I haven't had time. My wife helped me get them labeled but I need to sit down and go through it very carefully to make sure I'm explaining it correctly. What I like about the new version is that if you have it set to driving mode, and you set up a route that is fairly short, it will pop up and say, that is a very short route, would you rather walk? Then a clearly labeled button for driving or walking is there. The same thing happens if you set a really long route in pedestrian mode, it will ask if you would rather drive, and give the two options. RE: Can an iPhone work on both ATT and Virazone?
Hi, It will not work there either, as Sprint uses same radio chips as Verizon does, although it is economical from billing perspective. Here's the rule of thumb: . iPhone 4: there are two versions out there, one made to run on chips used by ATT (called GSM) and another one designed for Verizon-like chips (called CDMA). . iPhone 4S: It can work on both GSM and CDMA chips, hence it is called world phone. . Whatever the upcoming one might be: rumor has it that it'll have official 4G cell radios (termed LTE, or Long Term Evolution). iPad III has this chip on some machines, but the connection standard is optimized only for some parts of the world - other countries use different LTE frequencies. GSM (Global System for Mobile communication; the word is actually French in origin) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is termed 3G, while LTE is termed 4G. Whereas GSM uses SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) so you can swap phones, CDMA requires different methods for phone activation. Word has it that LTE will use something similar to SIM. iPhone 3GS uses so-called mini SIM (found on majority of phones) while 4 and 4S uses smaller micro SIM chips on GSM networks like ATT (there is a tutorial out there that teaches how you can convert a mini SIM to micro SIM). RE: Jail breaking
Hi, It'll depend on kinds of data that iTunes backs up from iDevice. If it copies application directories that is also used by jailbreak apps, then there is a potential for them to show up (at least in the file system) on a non jailbroken device; but here's the catch: even if the jailbreak apps do find their way into new devices (non jailbroken), there's no way to find and run them, as the operating system blocks these thanks to what's called privileges - under Unix (for which iOS/Mac OS X family is based on), you cannot run an app that requires higher user level unless you allow it yourself or through some exploits (essentially, a jailbreak package takes advantage of security holes or bugs to exploit what's usually termed privilege escalation) to modify the behavior of the OS, thereby allowing jailbreak apps to run (it is like using a Windows PC as an admin with User Account Control turned off)). So, although jailbreak can be fun, it also has security issues if not handled properly. As for upgrading, think of it like this: suppose you're upgrading a car engine, and you wish to make sure that the engine you are working with is the kind that the maker approves. One day, a friend of yours decided to test an engine enhancer, and as a result, modified the engine behavior a bit. Then you decide the upgrade the modified engine to the newer one, but found that the engine was not behaving as you expected. Moreover, the upgrade kit would not work on the current engine due to some deeper modifications your friend has made. So you ask your friend to undo his modification so you can upgrade the engine after. Similar thing can be said about operating systems: the OS maker expects certain behavior, but the target guy is acting odd, so the OS maker asks the user to restore the original functionality before upgrading the OS. Hope this helps. I just want to point out that Gutenberg has epubs of their books now, too, so you can read them in iBooks. Jane On Jul 4, 2012, at 4:47 AM, Rob Harris wrote: I bought this app too and do like it. The feature to import direct from the web worked, though it is a bit pedantic about the absolutely full address including the http:// prefix before it worked. A friend of mine has also got it and she likes the way it displays. It gives a lot of information in the one app. It automatically senses your location where you travel and you can add other locations. It gives low and high temperatures, F. What I like about the new version is that if you have it set to driving mode, and you set up a route that is fairly short, it will pop up and say, that is a very short route, would you rather walk? Then a clearly labeled button for driving or walking is there. I don't remember what the extras are. I know there was one that gave traffic reports. I don't know how accessible they might be. When you bought Navigon, you paid for a bunch of maps. Have you downloaded them all. For example, I got the eastern US. That includes lots of maps. I have only downloaded the ones I will use. You shouldn't need the extras to get the maps you need. Naval Combat iOS game app is free today
Hi All, I just noticed that Naval Combat, an accessible, battleship-style game app for the iPhone that was discussed on the viphone list earlier this year, is free today. It usually lists for $0.99, and I read some information that the price is only for July 4, so it may be back to the regular price already for European app stores. It is still free for the U.S. App store. Here's the link to the AppleVis entry for the game, which can be played with others via the game center: http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/games/naval-combat Please note that the game is produced with both German and English localizations, and apparently in the Danish App Store the game shows up under the German name, Seeschlacht, so use the link I give below, or the one at the AppleVis site to locate the correct app. The actual game play is in English once you download the app from the Danish store, despite this confusion. Presumably the game play is in German for German app store purchasers. Here's the App Store URL: • Naval Combat by Jonas Eckhardt, Tobias Muehlbauer, Wolf Roediger GbR (free for July 4, 2012, normally $0.99) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/naval-combat/id408833350?mt=8 Note there is also a free Naval Combat Lite app, but it was last updated a year ago, and I don't think it is accessible with VoiceOver.
