The most direct way is to hit the escape key.
That should activate the back button.

RE: was Re: Is it time to upgrade? now is bug with email attachments IOS 8.1

2014-10-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Shai,

I am not Alex, but if you do a 3-finger swipe and get the page announcement
(something like page 1 of 1, center of screen or page 1 of 1, top of screen),
then you are actually doing a 3-finger tap.
Make sure you do a pronounced swipe from the bottom towards the top of the page
with 3 fingers. I am just trying this in an open email and interestingly enough
if I do a 3-finger tap Voiceover tells me Page 1 of 1, center of screen
because I am doing the tap in the middle of the screen, but if I swipe up in
that same email Voiceover says Page 2 of 3 and if I swipe again I get Page 3 of
3. I guess this must be another small bug because I would think Voiceover
should say Page 1 of 3, center of screen when I do that 3-finger single tap
so I know there are more pages.

RE: Skype for iOS

2014-10-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Christopher,

I don't have an iPad, but if you can install Skype for iPhone on an iPad then I
would think that is the way to go since as you said it is a much newer and
higher version. I actually never knew that they were not the same and don't
quite get why Skype would have an iPad version and not update it with the same
features. Checking the app store Skype for iPad was updated on September 15 and
is at version 4.18.1 whereas Skype for iPhone was updated on October 15 and is
at version 5.6.

Ipad Mini 2 app store issues

2014-10-25 Thread Graham Roby
Hi,

Last week I purchased an iPad Mini 64gb the 2nd generation version. It came
running IOS7.1.1. I restored this from my backup which was for the iPad3
full size and all went well.

However when I tried using the app store looking for apps such as Whats App
I got no returns. Chris on here mentioned this was a bug nd to upgrade to
IOS8.1 which I have now done.

Things have improved a little, for example when I search for KNFB Reader the
Bleo Reader shows up but not KNFB reader. Whats App returns apps associated
with Whats App but not the actual main app. I've changed the search to look
for iPhone apps only again with no joy.

Has anyone any ideas?

Sorry this has been a longish post but I wanted to give as full account as
possible as to what is happening.

Kind regards

Graham

Re: Ipad Mini 2 app store issues

2014-10-25 Thread Christopher Hallsworth
I understand Whatsapp is only for iPhones anyway, you do get apps that
are specific to one's device and so are not available or will not run on
other devices on the same platform, it's not common but does happen, I
would like to see Whatsapp for iPod Touch and iPad as well but it's not
here yet, they assume you all have a mobile I guess smile.

Graham

RE: accessible app to determine horizontal level

2014-10-25 Thread Richard Turner
The compass in iOS 7 introduced the level inside the compass.
I think you had to use the three finger side swipe to get to it in iOS 7.
It removed the need to down load a separate app. Very nice.

All iPhones running iOS eight should have this little feature to get to it tap
on utilities folder, or double tap if you're using voice over, then tap on
compass, then at the bottom it should say one of two double tap on that, and
the level should come up. The counter in my bathroom is -1° :-)

 Hi all,
In iOS7, you could go to the list of folders and accounts in iOS Mail, hit
Edit, and choose unread, flagged, or a few other mailboxes you wanted to

folder from inside any account, only the folders iOS offered. In iOS8,
though, I was just able to add my iCloud account's Apple folder to the list,
meaning I no longer need to dig into my iCloud account just to get to it,
saving a couple steps. This is really great!

One word of warning: VoiceOver doesn't seem to indicate the selected folder.
I double tapped Apple in my list of folders to add it, and I was not told it
was selected. I hit Done anyway, hit it again t exit the list of accounts,
and the folder appeared (this will make more sense if you try the process).
So, it works fine, but VoiceOver doesn't seem to know which folder you
select. The system does, it just isn't spoken.

Double-tap the address bar and type your search term in it. Turn the rotor to
headings and move by heading till it says on this page, x matches where x is
the number of matches it finds. Double-tap find search term where search term
is your actual term. At the bottom of the screen is a form. It will tell you
which search occurrence you're on. Double-tap previous or next to display each

Re: Siri Launching Issues

2014-10-25 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. unfortunately I had tried the turning volume up
previously and yes dictation is already enabled. I have contacted Apple
Accessibility, but right now they are not my favorite people in the world as i
called them last weekend about a different issue of my iPhone being unable to
sync. After being on the phone with them for well over an hour the guy told me
he would call me back later that day. good thing I didn't wait on hearing back
from Apple Accessibility because I would still be waiting. I ended up resetting
my iPhones settings and sure enough that fixed the sync issue. I know Apple
Accessibility is not going to have an answer to everything but if you tell me
you are going to cal lmd back, call me back, or at least send me an email
acknowledgment that you are still working on the issue. Oh well.

matter how many times I tap the listen now button on the screen nothing.
Additionally I am having issues often enough when I do a two finger double
tap in a text field to begin dictating something. I can also hit the dictate

periodically in IOS 7 but not as bad as this. The only thing that gets Siri

I finally updated my to 8.1

2014-10-25 Thread Katey Glass
Good Afternoon,

I wanted to let everyone know I finally updated my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.1. I
have a question, before the update my incoming messages and texts didn't read
them outloud on the lock screen. Now they are reading them out.

Under General, Accessibility is there a setting that got changed some place? I
seem to remember a way to totally take them off the lock screen that is
visually) which will only play a sound and I may have to revert to this as I do
not want my messages read out for all to hear.

Also, has anyone updated an iPad 3rd Generation to iOS 8.1? If so, how's it
doing? I'm currently running 7.1.2 and its running fine.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Re: Add *any* folder to main folders list in Mail in iOS8

2014-10-25 Thread Alex Hall
Fair warning: this seems to pull al your messages into the Notification Center,
and alert you to them. Before I added the Apple folder, for instance, I only
saw messages in my inbox, and my phone only vibrated when a message came to the
inbox. Now, I get an alert for messages that go to the inbox as well as the
Apple folder, and my phone also vibrates for both. this isn't a problem, and
many will probably prefer it, but it is something to note.

 Hi all,
In iOS7, you could go to the list of folders and accounts in iOS Mail, hit
Edit, and choose unread, flagged, or a few other mailboxes you wanted to
appear in that main list. As far as I know, though, you couldn't choose a
folder from inside any account, only the folders iOS offered. In iOS8,
though, I was just able to add my iCloud account's Apple folder to the list,
meaning I no longer need to dig into my iCloud account just to get to it,
saving a couple steps.

IOS 8.1 and Braille Displays

2014-10-25 Thread Steve
BlankI haven't seen much on this list, but am I the only one that is having
issues pairing a Braille display with IOS 8.1?

The only way I can seem to get things paired is to use 8-dot uncontracted
Braille.

I haven't had time to check it out on the Humanware Braillenote Apex, but on
the HIMS U2, even if you can get it paired, it seems to be sluggish.

Once again, if you want to read a message where this happens, just reply to

Re: Add *any* folder to main folders list in Mail in iOS8

2014-10-25 Thread RobH.
This is a gem, and have to say that the list was entirely accessible and did
notify of what was or wasn't selected as I tagged up and down. I added
Unread and took off all inboxes. The former is something I need to check
and the latter meant all content of inboxes, which I didn't need to keep
seeing every time I wanted to do a global check.

Couldn't find an Apple folder, is this one you created? which you put at
the top level presumably, I've only created a folder once and that lower
down.

Thanks, RobH.

Fair warning: this seems to pull al your messages into the Notification
Center, and alert you to them. Before I added the Apple folder, for
instance, I only saw messages in my inbox, and my phone only vibrated when a
message came to the inbox. Now, I get an alert for messages that go to the
inbox as well as the Apple folder, and my phone also vibrates for both. this
isn't a problem, and many will probably prefer it, but it is something to
note.

 Hi all,
In iOS7, you could go to the list of folders and accounts in iOS Mail,
hit Edit, and choose unread, flagged, or a few other mailboxes you
wanted to appear in that main list. As far as I know, though, you
couldn't choose a folder from inside any account, only the folders iOS
offered. In iOS8, though, I was just able to add my iCloud account's
Apple folder to the list, meaning I no longer need to dig into my iCloud
account just to get to it, saving a couple steps. This is really great!

One word of warning: VoiceOver doesn't seem to indicate the selected
folder. I double tapped Apple in my list of folders to add it, and I was
not told it was selected. I hit Done anyway, hit it again t exit the list
of accounts, and the folder appeared (this will make more sense if you
try the process). So, it works fine, but VoiceOver doesn't seem to know

Fair warning: this seems to pull al your messages into the Notification
Center, and alert you to them. Before I added the Apple folder, for
instance, I only saw messages in my inbox, and my phone only vibrated when a
message came to the inbox. Now, I get an alert for messages that go to the

Has anyone here purchased the ScanJig stand?

Someone on the KNFB Reader list just mentioned it but they had not used it,
just read about it.

Apparently it can be used with smart phones or tablets to make scanning
documents easier.

I've written the company for more information, but I thought with all the
recent discussions of scanning someone may have seen this stand and could
say something about it.

Thanks,

This feature was introduced in iOS 7 and I've been using it for the last year.
It's great.
I realise this isn't possible for everyone, but I use a separate email account
for list traffic. That way I can benefit from this feature without being
notified every time I have another message from a list. It's a really good
combination of tools and nice to have lists I check regularly right on the
front And it's yet another benefit of iMap and server-side rules.

Re: WIFI with new OS

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Anne Lynskey
Rich, thanks. That makes a lot of sense and is a much easier fix. I did
not want the new OS and somebody in my family got their hands on my
phone and thought they were doing me a favor and just downloaded it.
Think they wrecked my iPad too. Gees, they ask about everything else but
not that. I have done some research and understand one can no longer
revert. Is that true? I would really like to go back to 7 as I am not a
happy camper right now.

Thanks for your help.

iPhone 6 Plus users report persistent unexplained crashing issues, possibly tied to large app libraries

2014-10-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

The following is from Apple Insider. The link to the original article is
located at the end of the article.

Mark

iPhone 6 Plus users report persistent unexplained crashing issues, possibly
tied to large app libraries

A number of iPhone 6 Plus users have reported an issue in which the phone
inexplicably crashes or enters a reboot loop, prompting many to take it in
to Apple for service, where it is usually swapped out for a new unit. Some
owners are on their fourth replacement 6 Plus.

Multiple owners have reported identical crashing problems on Apple's Support
Communities forum, with one thread now standing at more than 9,000 views and
60 replies.

The exact trigger has yet to be discovered, though 6 Plus owners posting to
the thread claim to have nailed down a few commonalities: 128GB iPhone 6
Plus is the most affected model; apps installed number at more than 700; and
crashes can occur without user interaction. Some pin the trouble on hardware
as Apple's recent iOS 8.1 update did not fix the issue, though others
believe software is to blame.

At first, it was thought that restoring from a previous iPhone image carried
over faulty app settings or incompatible apps, but this theory was seemingly
debunked after multiple attempts to restore phones as new before adding on
apps manually failed. This does not rule out individual app incompatibility
with iOS 8, but with so many apps in question, testing and cross-checking
results would be extremely difficult.

Some forum members and AppleInsider readers have taken their 6 Plus in to an
Apple Store for assessment. In some cases, Geniuses exchange the
non-functional unit, while others have been told to hold on to their phone
as their repair ticket escalates up the tech support chain of command. Few
have reported success with new iPhone 6 Plus replacements.

As for workarounds, some are seeing varying success in restoring the phone
as new, then manually installing each previously purchased app one-by-one.
However, as mentioned above, a good number of owners have tried this tactic
to no avail. Manually reinstalling purchased apps is a time consuming
process and seemingly does not provide a surefire solution to the problem.
In fact, some forum members say the fix only lasts for a few minutes before
the phone once again enters into a crash cycle.

Interestingly, others have found that turning on the Display Zoom function
sometimes helps alleviate crashes, but the method is far from a proven fix.

As of this writing, the number of owners affected by the crashing issue is
unknown. The number of views on each Support Communities thread suggest the
issue is not widespread. However, if current speculation is correct and the
problem is linked to 128GB iPhone 6 Plus owners who have expansive app
libraries, the relatively low number of reported cases may not be indicative
of the issue's severity.

Apple has not yet officially commented on the matter and does not have
policies in place to deal with incoming repairs at Apple Stores.
AppleInsider has reached out and will update this story when a reply is
received.

Re: to upgrade my iPhone 5 to IOS8.1 or not

2014-10-25 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
That was a very negative statement. Yes, iOS 8.1 has a few lingering bugs, but
for me I can live with them. As others have stated on this list, whether to
upgrade or not depends on a person's comfort level and statements like what
Mario wrote down aren't constructive at all.

I have noticed that my Iphone 5 keeps droping the WIFI and found myself
with an overage this month because it kept reverting to cellular. I
have never had an overage before. I turned off the cellular and it still
drops the WIFI. I go to settings and can't find my network. I turn the
phone off and on again, and all is well for awhile. Then it will lose th
enetwork and need to reboot so it can find it again. Has anyone else
 noticed this since iOS 8?

Deleting songs from my phone

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
I am an iTunes match subscriber. But a little while back, I downloaded a lot of
songs to my phone, because I was going to be in a place where I would not be
able to access them via streaming. Now, I would like to efficiently delete
those and get the space back. I still have iTunes match. Is there a way to do
this from the phone without using iTunes on the computer. I did not sync this
through the computer, so don't think thattrying to get rid of them via the
computer would be terribly helpful. Any ideas?

CAlex and voice dream reader

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
Having recently updated my iPad to iOS 8.1. I went into voice dream reader
looking for the availability of the Alex voice. I don't see it, and I assume
this means we will have to wait for the update to VoiceStream in order for the
app to be aware of Alex.

Weather app on the iPad

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
I know that Apple has changed the weather app on iOS eight on the phone. But
they don't seem to have added this app to the iPad. If they have, I'm certainly
not seeing it. What are people using now for a good accessible detailed weather
app for the iPad?

Is there a way to reset a Plantronics Voyager Legend headset?

2014-10-25 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

My Plantronics Voyager Legend headset seems to have died overnight. It was
working great, then, after an overnight charge, nothing nada kaput.

Wondering if there's a way to try to reset the thing. I can't feel any small
hole anywhere into which I could stick a paper clip. If anyone knows, or has
any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks in advance. Keith

Re: Having both the high-quality voice and Alex in iOS eight

2014-10-25 Thread Richard Turner
Mary,
I was just experimenting with those settings and ended up with them both as
Alex.
I then figured out how to get back to having Samantha as one of those, but
whether this is going to make sense is yet to be determined.
Go into the speech settings and go to the rotor languages and double tap on the
more info button on English US.
Then, double tap the enhanced quality using 156 MB.
Then, go back to the default dialect settings and double tap on Alex using 869
MB.

Then see if that changes what is on the rotor.
If not, set the default to 156 and hopefully that will get you Samantha, and
set the other as Alex.
It was some combination of those steps that got me back to having both.
HTH,
Richard

iOS 8.1 and 3rd Gen IPad

2014-10-25 Thread Katey Glass
Good Evening,

I was wondering if updating a 3rd Gen IPad was OK? I just did my iPhone 5s and
so far am liking it, only bug that seems to be is that despite my setting being
correct to not read alerts in the lock screen, they are.

I wonder if this has something to do with the fact I downloaded Alex? Also,
should he be my default voice? It appears that I cannot have Samantha as my
default and Alex in the rotor, He has to be the default. I wish Samantha could
be the default and Alex be one of my choices in the rotor.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Re: Ipad Mini 2 app store issues

Are you just looking at the suggestions you get when you start entering

upgrade to IOS8.1 which I have now done.

Things have improved a little, for example when I search for KNFB Reader
the Bleo Reader shows up but not KNFB reader. Whats App returns apps
associated with Whats App but not the actual main app. I've changed the
search to look for iPhone apps only again with no joy.

Has anyone any ideas?

Sorry this has been a longish post but I wanted to give as full account

Kind regards

Re: Having both the high-quality voice and Alex in iOS eight

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Richard
That work, setting the US English to the Samantha voice. It seems that Alex has
to be the default. I can't set Alex to US English and have Samantha be the
default. The advantage of that is that because I have some Russian links on my
home screen, if I have Samantha set as default, when I get to a Russian link
the voice automatically switches and reads my link in Russian. Alex tries
spelling of in cyrillic. It's a small thing.

Re: CAlex and voice dream reader

2014-10-25 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Jonathan. That is a disappointment. Of course, we do have the wonderful
James. But if Apple is serious about opening up their platform, I can't see why
they wouldn't give other developers access to Alex. Apple has so much more to
offer than android in my opinion, because android is so fragmented and their
braille support is so horrible. And yet, Apple keeps doing stuff like this.

Not something I have seen or noticed on my 5S and this includes the entire

dropping my WiFi connection has definitely not been one of them and this
goes for both my home and work WiFi where I use 2 completely different

2014-10-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

Are you on iOS 8.1? If so deleting music directly from within the music app
on your iPhone is super easy. You can do so by artist, album or individual
song or even by Genre. This is definitely a huge improvement in iOS 8 over
iOS 7 because in iOS 7 it was not possible to delete an entire album let
alone an entire artist which means if you have 5 albums by a particular
artist and you don't want any of them, a single swipe up ro down and a
double tap gets rid of them all. It's basically the same as deleting an
email or message, the action rotor works in the music app and in whichever
view you choose, playlists, artists, albums or More/Genre. Find the
artist/album you want to delete, swipe up or down to switch the action rotor
from Activate to Delete and double tap.

If it is a factory app from Apple you can't delete it.
If it is in the row of apps just above the Dock, then you are experiencing the
bug in iOS 8.
Move some other apps into that row and force that app to move to a different
spot until you can delete it.

RE: iOS 8.1 and 3rd Gen IPad

2014-10-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Katey,

You can easily make Samantha your ddefault and also have Alex. All you have
to do is go to Speech and add US English as another language. Then you can
set the original high quality female voice as your default and then go to
the More button next to US English and here you would select Alex. Then
make sure you add Languages to the rotor and now if you turn the rotor to
Languages and flick up or down you can toggle back and forth between
Samantha and Alex.

As for your iPad Third Gen, I don't have an iPad, but my Mom upgraded her
second gen iPad to iOS 8 and now to 8.1 and while she is not a Voiceover
user, it seems to work just fine. I used her iPad with Voiceover on a bit
when it was still 8.0.2 and didn't think it was slow or anything like that.
A Third Gen iPad should be fine.

Good Evening,

I was wondering if updating a 3rd Gen IPad was OK? I just did my iPhone 5s

setting being correct to not read alerts in the lock screen, they are.

I wonder if this has something to do with the fact I downloaded Alex? Also,
should he be my default voice? It appears that I cannot have Samantha as my
default and Alex in the rotor, He has to be the default. I wish Samantha
could be the default and Alex be one of my choices in the rotor.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Go into the speech settings and go to the rotor languages and double tap on the

Then, double tap the enhanced quality using 156 MB.

Then, go back to the default dialect settings and double tap on Alex using 869

Then see if that changes what is on the rotor.

If not, set the default to 156 and hopefully that will get you Samantha, and
set the other as Alex.

It was some combination of those steps that got me back to having both.

RE: Alex and voice dream reader

2014-10-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Mary,

I think the thing with Apple is that they don’t do much quickly and you have to
be patient. How long did it take them to add third party keyboard support? SIRI
has been around for 3 years and still developers don’t have access to it. But
Apple has really started opening things up (of course according to their own
rules) with the extensibility concept and over time developers will take
advantage of that and eventually Apple will give even more access. But as I
said, it will happen slowly because one thing Apple doesn’t like is to give up
control to the point where they compromise security and that of course is one
of the things which most people as well as large corporations and businesses
really like.

Sieghard

they wouldn't give other developers access to Alex. Apple has so much more to
offer than android in my opinion, because android is so fragmented and their

Thanks Sieghard. The phone is not yet on iOS eight. So, when I do upgrade,
if I have iTunes match on it means I have intermixed music, some of which is
downloaded and some of which is not. Is there an easy way to just show the
stuff that's downloaded?
