RE: any new app?

2015-11-26 Thread Richard Turner
Rich,

I heard back from the folks at Light Detector. Here is their response about
adding the option for having a vibration instead of sound.

Dear Richard,
thanks for your interest in LightDetector and for your valuable suggestion.
I will discuss your idea with my team, but I am quite sure that we will add
this to our TODO list, which means that we will add this functionality, sooner
or later.

Please, do not hesitate to contact me for any question or other suggestions.
Best,
Sergio

RE: any new app?

2015-11-26 Thread Richard Turner
Seeing Assistant Light and Light Detector both emit a sound, but neither gives
a vibration which is what Rich was asking about.

I wrote the folks at Seeing Assistant to ask if adding an option for a
vibration was possible. We'll see what they say.

I didn't find a contact for the light detector as yet.
I tried putting the iPhone on mute, but still no vibration.

Richard

I did grab one a while back called Seeign Assistant Light that gave off a sound
when light was detected. The stronger the light, the higher the pitch. I may be
wrong on the exact name, but that was what it was called more or less. I'm sure
if you ssearch for it, you'll find it in the app store. I ended up deleting it
since I never really used it. The app was free.

there. It will list current and up-coming birthdays. HTH.

iPhone 5S still relevant and usable?

2015-11-26 Thread Portia Scott
Hello all,

I know I haven’t posted in a huge long while, but one of my best friend’s wants
to get me an iPhone 5S unlocked from Amazon.

Question to you all, however. Is anyone using an iPhone 5S here anymore? Is it
still usable and relevant anymore these days?

I would love any answers/feedback on this question.

Thanks,

Portia.

Re: KNFB reader double tapping the take picture button

2015-11-26 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I don't know that it will help, but I suggest using the split tap to activate
this button. In some cases, the split tap seems to activate an icon when a
double tap will not. I use the split tap on the take picture button, so that
my phone is less likely to be moved out of position when taking the picture.
In case some might not know, to do a split tap, place a finger directly on the
icon you want to activate. Keeping your finger on this icon, touch the screen
with any other finger. In my every day use of my phone, I use the split tap
more often than the double tap to activate an item when I know specifically
where an icon is located.

Re: In the Facebook iOS app, where did the birthday reminders go?

2015-11-26 Thread Flor Lynch
Up to a few months ago, the reminders had also appeared in my Notifications
Center. Thus arose my question. I still do get notifications/updates of
friends' posts there. I have now turned on email notifications for the
reminders, so I'll see how that turns out.

Hi I

place where notifications were posted.

  Hello,

I receive emails each day when a friend is having a birthday. To find
present and up-coming birthdays go into your notifications. You should see
birthdays there. It will list current and up-coming birthdays. HTH.

I have not seen any notifications of birthday reminders in the Facebook IOS
app for some time, whereas I used to see some most days, and of upcoming
birthdays for the week and the month. Have They been taken out? (Sometimes I
wonder just what are FB trying to do?)

I heard back from the folks at Light Detector. Here is their response about
adding the option for having a vibration instead of sound.

Dear Richard,
thanks for your interest in LightDetector and for your valuable suggestion.
I will discuss your idea with my team, but I am quite sure that we will add
this to our TODO list, which means that we will add this functionality,
sooner or later.

Please, do not hesitate to contact me for any question or other suggestions.

I'm not sure, but I've never sent a test message to any list. I just
wait to see if messages show up and check the web interface to see if
I'm missing any messages. I just wait until I have something to post

Re: iPhone 5S still relevant and usable?

2015-11-26 Thread Portia Scott
Yeah I’m on my mother’s T-Mobile plan, which has the jump feature. But owing to
the fact that she controls when I get a new phone, and all that, I have to find
my own way to get an iPhone, and don’t have the $800 to $1000 for the newest
one. Sad, I know. That’s why my friend wanted to buy me an iPhone, and the only
thing I could think of was the 5S. But I know it is older, and that’s why I
wasn’t sure of it’s usefulness with the latest software and such.

Thanks to those who responded, and happy Thanksgiving.

RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible

2015-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

You can save yourself the step of having to add the ringtones folder to your
library to update any new ringtones you may have put in there. Just put them in
the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, next time you open iTunes they will be
moved to the ringtones folder and, as the name suggest, automatically added to
the tones library.

Sieghard

Sieghard and Ari,

I agree that for transferring ringtones to one's computer, it is much easier to
use your computer and web browser. I find that much easier and when I locate a
ringtone I like, I go to the Zedge site on my computer, log in, find the
ringtone, and save it to my iTunes Media\Ringtones subfolder. I then just add
that folder to my iTunes library the next time I'm in iTunes and sync any new
ringtones to my iPhone 6.

I did save a ringtone to my phone using the Zedge app but by the time I hooked
up the phone to my computer to transfer that ringtone to it using iTunes and
File Sharing, it is much easier just to use the computer and my web browser to
grab the ringtone initially. I do like using the Zedge app to sample the
ringtones to see what's available.

Hi Alan,

I gave this a try and it does work OK, but I haven't yet figured out how I can
best transfer a ringtone from the app to my PC. I haven't actually tried the
Save Ringtone option because I saw the Share button and thought this should be
easy. I selected Save to Dropbox from the share sheet, but when I went to my
Dropbox folder on the PC I realized that all this does is to save a little text
file with a link to the ringtone on the Zedge.com website.
I still find it easier to just use the website, there I can type in a search
word, then I use the Jaws Find command to search for that word and I can
usually easily find the ringtones. If I then press enter on one it opens up, I
use Jaws Key+F7 to bring up a list of links, find "View" and that plays the
ringtone. Then I look for the "get" link and then use the Jaws cursor to find
the download link which I find easier because after clicking on it I can use
Alt+N for the notification bar and select save. If I then go back with
control+left arrow, find another ringtone and repeat, the Jaws cursor usually
is right there on the download link.

Sieghard

I just downloaded the latest version 2.5 of the Zedge app and find it is
accessible for sampling the large volume of free ringtones provided by that
site. The previous version had an inaccessible play button for sampling the
ringtones.

I expect you still must use iTunes to get any of the Zedge ringtones
transferred to your devise but this app makes it very easy to sample the
ringtones in order to pick out your favorites.

I'm running IOS 9 on a 4S and an iPhone 5, and they're both very usable,
so an iPhone 5s would perform even better. With IOS 9 supporting the 4S,
I'd assume IOS 10 and probably even 11 would support the 5s.

Yes, hopefully Apple will keep supporting the older devices, as not everyone
has the money to shell out for an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus. I sur don’t, lol. If
there was a place that did payments, sure people could afford it, but fixed

RE: Ringtones

2015-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I assume you mean the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder which is a subfolder
of the "iTunes Media" folder. It is still there, but whatever file you want to
have automatically added to a particular library has to be in the correct
format. If it's an MP3 or M4A format, it will be added as a song to your music
library. If you want to have it added to your tones library, it will already
have to be converted to AAC and be given the proper extension which is M4R.

Hi, it used to be in older versions of iTunes you could save an MP3 file to a
certain folder on your hard drive, and when opening iTunes, it would
automatically add it to your ringtones collection already converted to M4R.
Is that still the case? I can't seem to find the folder if so. Thanks for any
tips!

RE: A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

Transfer purchases still copies apps I downloaded on my phone to iTunes on the

Ari,

As of iOS 9.x, previously synchronized apps are no longer copied from an iOS
device to iTunes on a computer during sync sessions.

Therefore, if you have a VoiceOver accessible app on your iOS device, I
strongly recommend that you update the app in iTunes, should any future updates
break the iOS app. My suggestion presumes that you would want the most recent
VoiceOver accessible version of an app stored on your computer.

Mark, I'm a little bit confused. What's going on with iTunes 12.whatever and
iOS 9 and syncing apps from your phone to the computer? What happens if you
update the app on your phone, then sync your phone to the computer, while also
doing a transfer purchases? I don't update certain apps often, in case there
are accessibility problems, so I like to keep a spare older copy in another
place on my computer. I also like to have apps that I do update on a regular
basis sync to the computer. Call me weird, but I don't like relying on iCloud
backups, because when you use them, they just pulled the latest versions of
apps from the app store. This is a problem if you have apps that are no longer
in the app store.

Thanks,
Ari

2015-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I did the same thing a while back, I deleted an app while it was showing an
update. The simple solution is to redownload the app, this will of course get
you the latest version. Then just delete it again and all will be right in the
world of the app store.

Hi all.
I had an update to one of my aps the other day. I deleted that ap after I found
it had to be updated because I didn't use it. My apstore still shows one new
item, but there's nothing in the updates section. I've rebooted my phone, taken
the apstore out of the ap switcher... still shows one new item. I know it's no
big deal, but it's bugging me because I always think I have an update when I
really don't.
suggesttions welcomed!

Re: A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

2015-11-26 Thread englishrider91
Ah, I get it now. Now, here's where things get tricky for me. I'll be getting a
new laptop soon, and installing iTunes on it. I am still running iOS 8 point
whatever on my 4S. Will I be able to back up apps to my new computer using The
latest version of iTunes and that iOS version on my 4S? I don't plan to stay
with iOS ate, as I'll be getting a new iPhone 6S soon, and when I do, I'll use
this new method of syncing apps to the computer once I get my iPhone 6S with
iOS 9 on it, but for the initial sinking of app versions on my 4S that
currently work with VoiceOver to the new computer, would this work? Sorry if
I'm confusing you.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible

2015-11-26 Thread englishrider91
The reason I like emailing them to myself through the app rather than using the
website is that I don't have to fiddle with searching or anything like that.
Downloading attachments through Gmail is very, very easy, and everything is in
one place, in my email inbox, so I don't have to try and figure out what search
result is what. Sometimes there's things that are named very similarly in
Zedge, and if I email them to myself, I know exactly what I'm downloading
without having to listen to it from the website to double-check check that I am
indeed getting the exact same tone that I liked previously.

Hi, coming in on this thread, I was using the picker extensively last night on
a site where I had about three items which had to be chosen. I found that the
items did not stay there I have indicated and wonder if there is something more
that I should have done. Once I had picked the item, I double tapped on it,
hoping it would stick. Any further comments on this would be most welcome.

Re: I converter pro, app that converts youtube to m4a

2015-11-26 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
I am very interested in this app, but wonder if it works in the way I am
hoping… my rproblem is not so much one of space on my phone, but, rather, the
fact that I have a very limited broadband. so, if I want to watch YouTube
videos or download films et cetera, will this app allow me to just import the
sound file and, in t reduce my download traffic?

any info gratefully received,
Sandy

Oh, I forgot to mention in my last post, when I was using the picker last
night, I found that I had to flick in different places each time sometimes to
the left hand side and sometimes a little to the right side of the Home
button. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yeah, I have noticed this too. I found the picker fields by placing my finger
on the lower right hand corner of the phone. Or, perhaps it's in the lower
middle of the phone screen, just above the home button. Next time, place your
finger on the bottom part of the screen after you select the picker, you should
be able to swipe to your selection after making that area become active.

However, when I swipe up or down with one finger, it just says forward
do I turn off some kind of setting or is there a way to fix this? It is

Re: Trouble with pop up buttons and the picker.

2015-11-26 Thread Arnold Schmidt
As has been mentioned already, you have to double tap the done button when
you have chosen your picker item. Usually, it is a one-finger swipe left
from the list, but sometimes, it is to the right.

Hi, coming in on this thread, I was using the picker extensively last night
on a site where I had about three items which had to be chosen. I found that
the items did not stay there I have indicated and wonder if there is
something more that I should have done. Once I had picked the item, I double
tapped on it, hoping it would stick. Any further comments on this would be
most welcome. Thanks!

when I double tap when it says pop up button, it just says pop up button
again. I then touch the lower right corner of the screen and it says
picker item. Again, I do not double tap this, the picker item becomes
active when it says picker item. I have to start using the one-finger
swipe up and down,to adjust it. A three-finger swipe up and down moves
by greater amounts. Also, a double tap and hold on the screen will
work. Always remember to swipe, usually left but sometimes right, to
the done button, and double tap it, when you are finished selecting the
item you want.

Hi, I am having trouble using the kicker on my iPhone. When I double tap
it so I can swipe and navigate two items. It acts like it's opening.
However, when I swipe up or down with one finger, it just says forward
do I turn off some kind of setting or is there a way to fix this? It is
very frustrating, because I have several sites that use the picker.

Re: reading tables on iPhone or iPad?

2015-11-26 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Being that I do not have a table to read, and especially that I do not have
the specific table you are wanting to read, I have no idea if this will
work. Memorize what the headings for the columns are, then set the rotor to
lines, and read it line by line. I wonder if this might work? There has to
be a better way.

Hi all,
Can someone give me some idea of how to use tables on the iPhone.
The company I work for uses an online booking website to show our
appointments for the day, there in a table format.
But the table isn’t read properly by VO,, can any one give me any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Re: I converter pro, app that converts youtube to m4a

2015-11-26 Thread Candy Lowe
Sandy, in answer to your question, I think that would work for you as long as
you were able to stream the video for a short time in order to download it.
The problem is this now, I didn't use the app for three weeks or so, and it
doesn't have the browser where I can paste the youtube address. That tab which
was the downloads tab is totally gone. If and when I should get the problem
solved, I will let you know. In the mean time, I will search for other apps
that may do the same thing.

Re: reading tables on iPhone or iPad?

2015-11-26 Thread englishrider91
there's a rows option in the rotor. You have to ad it, but once you do, you can
flick down to move down the rows of the table. I do this to read my local
transportation company's route schedules. You do have to kind of memorize the
column headers, unfortunately. Sometimes VO will tell you the column that
you're moving to when you flick through the items on a row of the table, but
not all the time. At least, that's how I remember things being. I haven't done
this in a while, so I could be misremembering.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi: I'm using KNFB reader with the iPhone 6 and IOS9.1. In KNFB reader I

double tap it numerous times to get it to work. Anyone else experiencing
this problem and any suggestions?

Thanks.

They do work very well and the app is accessible. I use two or three of them
when I use my smoker.

Yes, AT Guys are selling the iGrill thermometers. They have been mentioned
on here before, I'd also check Applevis since there might be a podcast or
write-up about them. I don't have one, but it is my understanding that they
work very well and that the app is accessible.

RE: A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

2015-11-26 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Thanks again for this, Mark.

Is it known whether this inability to synch app from the device to the pc will
be the future as well as the present, or is it something Apple is working on to
fix something it broke?

iTunes

Hello Ari,

In your scenario, you are absolutely correct. However, if you invert the
scenario, you will discover that the reverse affect is also true; said reversal
being the following:

1.
You update to version 3.0 from version 2.9 on your iOS device. Now, because
you want to make certain that you have a backup copy of version 3.0, just in
case a future release breaks access, you update to version 3.0 on your computer
via the iTunes Update feature.

2.
Now, you update to v3.1 on your iOS device. Upon doing so, you discover that
VoiceOver access has been compromised. In this situation, you do not update
your copy on the computer which is v3.0. Instead, you delete v3.1 from your
iOS device and copy the older version from your computer back to the iOS device.

As you can see, from the steps above, , you only update apps on your computer
when you have confirmed that they work well on your iOS device. Keep in mind
that while you cannot copy an app from an iOS device to the computer, you can,
however, copy an app from the computer to the iOS device.

Wouldn't updating the app in iTunes just get you the inaccessible version,
though? I mean, say there's version 3.0 of an app on your iPhone that works
perfectly now, but the 3.1 update breaks it, and you heard about the problems,
so you haven't updated the app yet, and don't plan to until the problems have
been fixed. If you update the app in iTunes, won't you get the inaccessible 3.1
version on your computer?

Thanks,
Ari

And, if row doesn’t work, use Vertical navigation. If that doesn't who up in

there's a rows option in the rotor.

Thanks,

RE: Video description of movies and tv shows Apple TV fourth generation

2015-11-26 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I don't think we know the answer to this yet. If you want Apple to include
whether Audio description is included in a movie or a show, send a message to
Apple Accessibility to let them know you'd like this indication. If they hear
from enough of us, they might make it happen.

You can send a message to accessibil...@apple.com .

I've sent them such a message, and they said they'd send it on to the folks who
know about this. Maybe if they hear the same thing from a thousand of us,
they'll make it happen.

Subject: Video description of movies and tv shows Apple TV fourth generation

Hi,
I have video description enabled on my Apple tv fourth generation in settings
and have the following questions:
1. How does one know when previewing a movie or tv show in iTunes whether that
film is described?
2. Does one get access to the described content even if renting the film or
show?
Films that I have looked at have not said that they are described. My
understanding from previous discussions on this was that there were very few
films at the time which were described but I understand that there may be more
now.
Thank you in advance for any responses

Thanks to all who have given tips! I saw those buttons last night, but wasn't
quite sure where they would take me, and didn't want to end up sending my form,
when I hadn't completed it! Of course, that wouldn't have been accepted, but I

There's also a next button that you can tap to move to the next item in the
withm. Things usually stick it you press that, too.

RE: Converting Ringtones

2015-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can use iTunes, make sure you go to Settings > General and under import
settings AAC is selected. Then go to where you saved the ringtone, press enter
on it (I assume it's in MP3) and it will play in iTunes. Find it in your music
library, then right click and select "Create AAC version". Now go back to where
the new ringtone is saved, make sure you go to the "Tools" menu, select "Folder
Options" and select to show file extensions. Now rename the file extension from
M4A to M4R, copy the new ringtone to the automatically add to iTunes folder,
then connect your phone and sync it.

Alternatively, you can Google "MP3 to AAc converters", there are all sorts of
online converters where you can browse to where you saved your MP3 ringtone,
upload it and then convert it. Most likely they will convert to M4A which is
the music format and you still have to go and rename it as described above and
then copy to automatically add to iTunes so it gets added to your tones library
and you can then sync it.

Sieghard

RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible

2015-11-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You need iTunes to get them onto your phone, no way around that and it really
is not that difficult. I think so many people are somehow intimidated by iTunes
because of past accessibility issues. I am not saying it’s perfect and there
are some problems, but syncing ringtons isn’t one of them.

Is there any way to get the ringtones from Zedge on iPhone without using
iTunes? Android just downloads them from the site. Just curious as I just
cannot stand iTunes. LOL.

Alan, I find it easier just to email myself the ringtones, rather than try and

I expect you still must use iTunes to get any of the Zedge ringtones
transferred to your devise but this app makes it very easy to sample the

Ringtones

2015-11-26 Thread Joe
Hi, it used to be in older versions of iTunes you could save an MP3 file to
a certain folder on your hard drive, and when opening iTunes, it would
automatically add it to your ringtones collection already converted to M4R.
Is that still the case? I can't seem to find the folder if so. Thanks for
any tips!

I had an update to one of my aps the other day. I deleted that ap after I found

the apstore out of the ap switcher... still shows one new item. I know it's no
big deal, but it's bugging me because I always think I have an update when I
really don't.

Re: iPhone 5S still relevant and usable?

2015-11-26 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Anything that still works is relevant. They still work and are still supported.
I tire of this throw away age where $500-700 can be
discarded as finished in under two years. I still use my 5S, and the 4S even
more. I haven't updated 4S mind.

I'd happily accept a free gift like that without having to ask if it was worth
it.
But no one ever offered, or offers.

Thanks,

Portia.

RE: A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

2015-11-26 Thread M. Taylor
Sieghard,

Not to debate this as it has been well documented by Apple and the community at
large that, as I posted in an earlier email, to quote myself, "As of iOS 9.x,
previously synchronized apps are no longer copied from an iOS device to iTunes
on a computer during sync sessions."

I am not certain what you are experiencing but I can tell you that, on all of
the computers I support, PC and Macs alike, once an app has been transferred to
the computer, it's updates are not transferred during sync sessions.

Transfer purchases still copies apps I downloaded on my phone to iTunes on the
computer.

Thanks,
Ari

RE: A Quick Tip for Those Experiencing Any App Updating Problems in iTunes

2015-11-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Keith,

This new syncing protocol is by design, according to Apple, in an effort to
increase security and other reasons.

However, as a result of public backlash, such as when Apple removed the beloved
Camera Roll, etc, Apple has been known to reverse itself, from time-to-time.
Only time will tell.

Thanks again for this, Mark.

Is it known whether this inability to synch app from the device to the pc will
be the future as well as the present, or is it something Apple is working on to
fix something it broke?

Thanks,
Ari
