RE: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Mary,

Thanks so much for the details about the Bluetooth Instant Pot model.
Unfortunately, this model appears to no longer be available at least not from
Amazon in new condition. They have the Instant Pot Smart Bluetooth model in
standard 6 quart size but only have 3 used ones available and the two used,
like new ones were priced at $329. That seems exorbitant to me and since I'm
considering this as a gift, I wouldn't buy a used model anyway.

If someone knows of another Instant Pot model with Bluetooth that's still
obtainable, I'd love to know its specific name. I prefer buying on Amazon as
opposed to eBay but I suspect I'm going to have to come up with another gift
idea.

Thanks for the help from others who posted about the apps that work with
controlling the Bluetooth model versus those that are mainly recipes.

Hi Alan,
If you want to use the app, which is fully accessible, you would need to get
the instant pot model that includes Bluetooth. That unfortunately makes it a
good deal more expensive. The instant pot does have very tactile buttons on
the front. So if you didn’t want to spend the money, you could make yourself a
braille chart of what the buttons do. That having been said, I do have the
Bluetooth model and I’m glad. One of the things that you can do is adjust the
cooking duration. That is easy with the Bluetooth model. If you just have the
one with the buttons were nothing talks you would have to remember the various
amounts of time that you’re starting with depending on what operation you want
to do, and then I assume hit a plus or minus button to advance or decrease the
amount of time.

You can monitor the temperature with the app. You can monitor the time
remaining under pressure. You can set the duration as I noted. Of course, you
can also tell it to do various things like soup, rice, manual, there are a
whole bunch of them. I’m honestly not sure how much difference all those things
make, except there are times that are preset of course, but they can be changed
by you. You can also slow cook or make yogurt, none of which I have done. You
do have to pair the device, which means before you can do anything with the
app, you have to hit a certain button on the pot to start the process. And I
honestly don’t remember which one that is. There is a section for recipes. I
never use it. On the bottom there are tabs, and I always go to the one that
says dashboard. That is where you can decide what sort of cooking you want and
set the various parameters accessibly. You can do a lot with these things, and
I’m sure I have not made as much use of mind for different things as many
people on the huge Insta pot facebook group have done.

RE: A question about why my phone goes to speaker phone during A call

2018-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Make sure your screen is clean and that you don't have a case which might
overlap the phone to the point where it might confuse the proximity sensor
which is at the top of the phone.
My 6S Plus seems to have gotten a bit worse with this as well, often when I
call somebody even if I am holding the phone up to my ear and it's ringing in
the earpiece as soon as the other person picks up it switches to speakerphone.
If I let it ring on speakerphone then when the other side picks up it usually
goes to the earpiece. It's almost like it's switching regardless of whether you
have it up to your ear or not. I have also observed that sometimes when I am on
a call as soon as the phone locks it switches to speakerphone and even moving
the phone away from my ear and back makes no difference unless I first unlock
the phone. If I know I am going to make a longer call I just use the Earpods.
There really isn't much you can do except for what I said above and of course
you can write to accessibil...@apple.com and complain about it.

Sieghard

RE: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I posted last November that there is a new InstantPot (relatively new) which
has a dial and it certainly is not accessible for bvlind people. I think it’s
very user friendly for a sighted person and I gave it to the manager at my
retail store and his wife as a wedding gift.
At that time I called InstantPot and asked about the “smart” bluetooth model
and the guy I spoke with advised me not to buy it since a new bluetooth
InstantPot was supposed to come out in the first quarter of 2018. We are a few
weeks past the end of the first quarter and I have not seen it yet (just looked
the other day). I was planning to call them again, once I do I’ll post a
message and report what I was told.
Maybe they ran into an issue which delayed production, I mean if Tesla can’t
manage to make enough of the Model 3 and Elon Musk himself is sleeping at the
factory micro-managing everything one can probably forgive InstantPot if they
are a bit late *smile*.

Downcast was my primary podcast player for several years, and I tried
Overcast a little over a year ago and now use it as my primary podcast
player.
From what I remember, Downcast only had one feature that Overcast does not,
and that is the capability of actually saving your podcast files.
Now Overcast also has a couple of features that Downcast does not, and that
is the smart speed and voice boost features, which are both very good
features. I know this is only my opinion, but I think Overcast has the best
playback when it comes to playing faster then the normal speed.

Now I would encourage you, if you have not already, check out the settings
screen. 2 important settings there is whether you want to stream or
download the episodes, and what you want to do once you listen to an
episode. I personally download my episodes so I can listen to them no
matter whether I have an internet connection or not, and I choose to
manually delete an episode. That way if I want to keep it afterwards I can.
Now I will tell you that if I keep an episode after I listen to it, it does
still show up under unplayed episodes.

The smart speed and voice boost settings can be found on the playback
screen.

You will also find that Overcast is updated more frequently then downcast.
But at the end of the day, they are both good players, and it is a personal
preference of

which you choose to use.

to do, and then I assume hit a plus or minus button to advance or decrease the
amount of time.

You can do a lot with these things, and
I’m sure I have not made as much use of mind for different things as many
people on the huge Insta pot facebook group have done.

there a particular Instant Pot model that I need to get to obtain app control

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Thanks for the tip on that book by Melissa Clark, Penny. I don’t believe I have
that one. I have certainly got enough other ones. Sigh. I guess I’m not very
adventurous. I have tried rice several times, and never ever comes out well.
But this is not a cooking list, so I will not go on and on. Nice to see you

Scheduling to record with Tune In

2018-04-21 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello all,

I am trying to use the tune in app to record a radio show just in case I am not
available to listen to it.
I must be doing something wrong, because it has not recorded for the last
couple of days.

This is what I did:

Added the station to my favorites.
On the station page, double tapped edit alarm.
Set up an alarm to record. I made sure that I enabled the alarm, enabled to
record, put the days and times I wanted it to record.

Now, I am able to go to any station page, double tap the record button at the
bottom, and it will record what is currently playing. But for some reason it
will not record by setting a day and time.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

iCloud and Windows 10

2018-04-21 Thread Elizabeth S Bowden
Hello All,
I have been in contact with the Apple accessibility people about this
problem. I was told that I would need to use icloud v5.1. According to the
information apple has, version 5.1 is the only version that will work with
Office 2016 or 365. All other versions have accessibility problems. Does
anyone know where I can get v5.1? The link the representative sent me was a
link for the current version, not the version I needed. I guess Apple won't
be very happy when someone reviews the survey I sent.

Thanks

Thanks, Penny. I did get a couple pressure-cooker books from Bookshare

Thanks, Mary. I do use the old one without Bluetooth without difficulty.
You're right, though, it requires knowing what buttons you're pushing
before you start in to pushing them. LOL. That's not really a problem,
although because I don't use it every day or even every week, I have to
relearn it every time. While that's not a problem hfor me, yes, the
accessible remote control of the appliance would be nice. If I ever
needed a new one, I think I'd go for the one with Bluetooth capability .

Re: Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Penny Reeder
Hi, I have been using the Instant Pot for about a year. I think I use
it at least once a week, and I really enjoy using it. I can't imagine
not having the blue tooth connectivity. Not only does it make setting
all of the seetings -- including function, time, level, etc. --
possible, but the IOS connectivity lets you keep track of what the
Instant Pot is doing. I definitely recommend paying the extra money
for the blue tooth connectivity and access to the IOS app.

As for new features, I read that the new model allows for higher
pressure -- high enough to allow people use it for canning fruits and
vegetables.

2018-04-21 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Les,
You know, I heard the same thing about a new pot that was coming out. I heard
they came out with something, and then there was a recall. I also know there
was one that came out that was not good for us, and I’m not sure if that was
the one that was recalled. So in short, I don’t know. I had also heard that
stock of the older models was running short, but I did not hear that
specifically about the Bluetooth model. Frankly, were I sighted, I don’t know
that I would’ve paid the extra for the Bluetooth. But I would not be without
it, since memorizing all that stuff at this point in my life is frankly beyond
my pay grade. Smile.
And thank you for your good wishes about my treatment. I guess it was
successful, so far, except I am left with really bad neuropathy in my feet,
which means I can’t use my guy dog and have lost all independent mobility
outside of the house. That is difficult to take.

Hi Mary,

First of all, and most importantly, I hope you are doing well. I hope the
treatment you had to go through went well for you. Regarding the instant pot, I
had a question. I thought I read that that was going to be a new model coming
out this year which was going to have some added benefit for us. But I don’t
recall if that ever hit the market. Do you know anything about this? Thank you.

Instant Pot App Accessibility and Features Question

2018-04-21 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I know this isn't a cooking list but I have a question about the Instant Pot
and what exactly its iOS app allows one to control. I read the Instant Pot
app description and it seems to talk more about recipes as opposed to
controlling the device with the app. Can anyone who uses an Instant Pot give
me some direction on what the app allows you to do and whether it's
accessible? Is there a particular Instant Pot model that I need to get to
obtain app control over it?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Re: The walmart grocery app

2018-04-21 Thread Mama Peach
One app, the Walmart Grocery app, is for curb side service and the other,
Walmart app, is for shopping and having it to delivered to your house via
UPS/FED EX/USPS. You can also choose to pick up your items at the store, but
that isn't curb side service, you have to go to a counter with the correct
ID and order information in order to pick up your items.

But, there are indeed two, and I'll give the link for each,

As for the grocery app, I installed it, but couldn't do much with

Re: How can a link be copied in Safari on iPhone?

2018-04-21 Thread Sherrie
There is another way that I find very useful. At the middle of the bottom
(right by the home button) is the share button. This includes a choice to
copy. It copies the link and also the Actual name of the page. It can then
be pasted elsewhere.

But there are many other great choices in the Share menu. I like to save
the text of many articles so I can add them to my computer files. . I
usually make sure the Reader is activated and it will then save the link and
the whole article including the links on the page. I generally choose mail
and mail it to myself. The Subject and message area is already filled in. I
do have an ad blocker on my Safari so the ads don't show.

Just looking through the choices I discovered a choice to send it to my
Dropbox. It saved it as a pdf. Other choices include adding it to
Bookmarks, or Favorites, or to the home screen...
If you don't have the Reader activated (top left corner) then it just mails
or messages the link and page name. If the Reader is activated it mails the
whole article.

Hello Lelia,

I am going to paste in an answer that I posted to the list a while ago:

As some in this community may recall, I am a huge fan of Over Drive. I use it,
exclusively, to download commercial audio books; from classic fiction such as
“Gone with the Wind,” to modern non-fiction releases such as Hillary Clinton’s
recently published, “What Happened.”

Having said this, the answer to your question will depend a great deal on
whether or not you have any usable vision.

I will confess that Over Drive is one of the few apps on my phone that compels
me to use my vision in order to access certain areas of an audio book. This is
not to say that these areas are not VoiceOver accessible but, accessing them
requires more explore-by-touch than iOS users have come to expect.

So, while the names of each chapter and section heading are completely
VoiceOver accessible, accessing this area can be a bit challenging if one is
totally blind.

Regardless, I will suggest the following navigation strategy, which requires no
vision, whatsoever, in order to execute:

1.
Place focus on the Play/Pause button, located near the bottom center of the
display.

2.
Single-finger, swipe from right-to-left, once. This will place focus on the
“Skip Back 15 Seconds”, button.

3.
Single-finger, swipe from right-to-left, again, in order to land on the “Audio
book, Previous Heading”, button. Each time you activate this button.
You will be taken back one subsection/chapter, at a time.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

RE: iOS kindle app and braille display

2018-04-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Holly,

I believe what you are experiencing is somewhat unique to the 20-cell displays.

A list member, I believe her name is Melissa, had the same problem and was able
to resolve it but I cannot remember her solution as she did not post it
on-list.

Perhaps you should download a free iBook title and see how it works with your
display. It may also be useful to attempt reading several Kindle titles to see
if all have this same problem or only one particular title.

The point is that you must narrow down the scenario in which this glitch occurs.

It may also be useful to contact your Braille display manufacturer.

Have you attempted to use different encoding? For example, try switching to
computer Braille or UEB and see what happens.

Try un-paring, and then re-pairing the display to your iOS device after a iOS
reboot.

It may be useful to check the general font and display settings on your iOS
device, outside of the Kindle app, as well. Some low vision users increase
font size, turn bold display on, disable the standard screen resolution, etc.
You must be certain that all of these settings are set to their default
parameters.

At present, I cannot reproduce your issues, when I have VoiceOver speech muted,
when using my Focus 40 Blue.

To tell the truth it has been quite some time since I set it up. But if you
just keep working on it, you will get it done. You may need to go to the
library's website to get the pertinent information for set up. And I am
assuming you have already gotten your library card.

Hello Lelia,

I am going to paste in an answer that I posted to the list a while ago:

As some in this community may recall, I am a huge fan of Over Drive. I
use it, exclusively, to download commercial audio books; from classic
fiction such as “Gone with the Wind,” to modern non-fiction releases such
as Hillary Clinton’s recently published, “What Happened.”

Having said this, the answer to your question will depend a great deal on
whether or not you have any usable vision.

I will confess that Over Drive is one of the few apps on my phone that
compels me to use my vision in order to access certain areas of an audio
book. This is not to say that these areas are not VoiceOver accessible
but, accessing them requires more explore-by-touch than iOS users have
come to expect.

So, while the names of each chapter and section heading are completely
VoiceOver accessible, accessing this area can be a bit challenging if one
is totally blind.

Regardless, I will suggest the following navigation strategy, which
requires no vision, whatsoever, in order to execute:

1.
Place focus on the Play/Pause button, located near the bottom center of
the display.

2.
Single-finger, swipe from right-to-left, once. This will place focus on
the “Skip Back 15 Seconds”, button.

3.
Single-finger, swipe from right-to-left, again, in order to land on the
“Audio book, Previous Heading”, button. Each time you activate this
button. You will be taken back one subsection/chapter, at a time.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Re: iOS kindle app and braille display

2018-04-21 Thread Holly Anderson
Hello mark, I have the speech always muted if I'm reading with a braille
display. I tried making the font as small as possible, and nothing works. It
happens when it goes to the next page naturally, or when I turn the page. Its
very frustrating.

RE: witch phone has the beter audio the iPhone 8 or the 8 plus or the iPhone 10

2018-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
At this point doing this is a waste of money. I have the 6S Plus and it's a
great phone. I'm sure the 8 Plus is also a very nice phone, but given that we
are almost at the end of April and in just over 4 months the new 2018 iPhones
come out upgrading now will only be expensive and you may have buyer's remorse
in September. Unless there is a major issue with your 6S Plus it will serve you
well for these few months and if your battery is starting to be an issue just
spend the $29 and set up an appointment at an Apple store to have it replaced,
you probably get that $29 back if you resell it in the fall and can proof the
phone had a new battery done by Apple just a few months ago.

RE: witch phone has the better audio the iPhone 8 or the 8 plus or the iPhone 10

2018-04-21 Thread Richard Turner
I'd suggest you listen to Jonathan Mosen's podcast The BlindSide from the time
the iPhone X was released. He does a nice comparison of them.

Personally speaking, I would not pay $1,000 for a phone, especially one without
a home button. But, that is just me. Yes, I use my phone almost more than I
use my computer, nothing that small is going to have truly decent sound, it is
rather, better sound for a very small device. If you want good sound, put the
money into a good Bluetooth speaker system or headphones. But, that again is
just me.

Then again, if you are a visual user of the iPhone, you may want the larger
screen the iPhone X gives you.

Good luck,
Richard

Re: The walmart grocery app

2018-04-21 Thread Bill Gallik
Huh, I had no idea there was a “Wal-Mart Grocery App,” why in the world would
Wal-Mart have two different apps that essentially (I assume) provide similar
functionality? I don’t doubt you Roger, I’m just quite surprised.

It was a few years ago when I installed the WalMart app on my iOS devices, is
this “WalMart Grocery” app something relatively new?

Anyhow, my apologies for convoluting the thread. But, I still find the WalMart
app very, very accessible and quite convenient to use. I’ve gone to the web
page and, while it is true that the site is accessible, I just prefer the
vanilla WalMart app.

Puzzled, I had to check. There is a '/single quote either side of the name
element. It seems to be a server thing, a second level
of packaging where it takes name and via vi-phone in double quotes, followed by
real address in <>.

Why my message is flagged as via the group and yours isn't is probably an admin
setting somewhere.

That is so much better, I got the complete source code which ran for miles.

Has Apple done anything in a more recent release to make iCloud for Windows

Hello Rob,

I think you answered your own question in the first paragraph of your original
post.

You should be using the latest version of the iCloud Control Panel, not the
previous version.

I strongly suspect that this is why you do not see the Calendar/Contacts option.

Subject: Help With iCloud For Windows And Outlook

I am setting up a new Windows 10 computer. I installed iCloud 6.2.2 since the
first dialog in the most recent version seemed less accessible.

I opened iCloud on the pc and signed in to my Apple ID. I found check boxes
for photos, bookmarks, and iCloud drive. I want to sync my Outlook calendar
and contacts with my iPhone using iCloud. All of the articles I have read from
a Google search say there are check boxes for contacts and calendar, but I
cannot find them.

I did use iCloud for contacts and calendar in Outlook on my old PC. I have not
yet copied the iCloud folder from Outlook on the old PC to the new PC because I
thought setting up iCloud on the new PC would create the folders in Outlook and
copy down the contacts and calendar information.

If I copy the iCloud folders to the new PC, would that enable the check boxes
to appear in the iCloud dialog box? Do you have information or an article
containing the steps to move iCloud to a new PC for contacts and calendar? I
specifically do not want to sync email using iCloud.

Rob

RE: need some more help with switching voices doing all the steps voice doesn't change,

2018-04-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I assume you somehow are missing a step. Are you changing the default voice or
are you adding a second voice? If you are adding Tom as a second voice then
after you have done so you need to turn the rotor to languages and flick up or
down to select it. Otherwise maybe give Apple Accessibility a call and see if
they can walk you through it step by step over the phone.

This is so strange, Michelle, and, Barb, we did everything you both said to do,
and it's troubling the voice isn't changing. If anyone has any idea what could
be wrong, and what to do, please let me know. I'm also going to check on apple

more information on there that might be helpful. Thank you again, Barb, and

Once I go to settings. I go to general, double tap on accessibility, then
double tap on voiceover, double tap on speech, double tap on voice, than
double tap download button next to Tom. Once Tom is downloaded double tap on
Tom and double tap on top in hats. Then Tom should be speeking. I hope this
helps you.

Change it to Tom and if it doesn’t stick turn Voiceover off and back on with a

voice is selected but it won't change. We were able to do it the other day but
it was a bit difficult to do. once you choose another voice, and then have
Samantha has the voice does it some how get more difficult to change voices? Or
are we missing something? Thanks for the assistance with this as we're still
pretty new to the iphone.

I went into settings, general, keyboard, and double tapped on where it says
keyboards 2, or it may have a different number if you have added other
keyboards, once you are in your list of keyboards, which in my case was English

double tapped.
Then, it cannot be selected when typing.

I've always muted the speech while reading a book in Braille. I never
thought of trying it with speech because it just seemed... well... wrong I
guess. It was one of those decisions I never gave conscious thought to
until just now when you asked..

We had to go to the link for that. my old browser was chucked off right away.
None of my kit is quite up2date by any stretch.

All the best with it. BTW: ifttt.com was the other suggestion to go to for a
similar or same purpose.

Re: Introducing Alexa Skill Blueprints: Create your own Alexa skills in minutes

2018-04-21 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Hahahahahahaha, they thought it was me who was mad yesterday when I responded
to this.

Ok, some mindless Alexa questions you hardly wanted to know beyond whether she
could answer them. But I'm trying extensions to the
suggestions and getting somewhere, had to fight it this morning though.

She does do a good line in slightly higher maths when testing her on geometry
and trig,... sin, Cos, Tan, Log and other bits and
pieces. Does a good line in roots too; cube root being one of the less common
and most useful.

But I was asking about rivers, Danube, Volga and another got through ok, but
Rhine, one of Europe's most important; got a wide
varietyof responses before getting enough of the right keywords in the right
order to get a meaningful answer. A.I isn't always as
smart as it thinks, and this is what they are going to use to drive cars, and
everything else no doubt.

Worth sticking with the What's new in alexa email for further tips and tricks.
Keep them in an email folder or something for back
reference.

RobH, empathises, believe me.

AmazonWas there anything in this message, apart from a, seemingly, endless list
of web garbage. If there was, I couldn't find it,
and as I am about to fathom the mysteries of Alexa and kin, I would, most
assuredly, find it of help.
Last night, I opened the "Ask Alexa" app on my iphone, and was presented with a
long list of questions that she could answer:
hardly one of which would I ever want to ask!

Puzzled, I had to check. There is a '/single quote either side of the name
element. It seems to be a server thing, a second level
of packaging where it takes name and via vi-phone in double quotes, followed by
real address in <>.

Why my message is flagged as via the group and yours isn't is probably an admin
