Re: where will you purchase the iPhone 5s

2013-09-16 Thread Brice Smith
I'm planning on purchasing the unlocked device only, but I'm not sure
if I should go to an Apple store or order it online. I would really
like to get it this weekend, as I'm busy with work and travel after
that and I have some time to set it up now. Part of me really hates
the idea of actually standing in a line to buy a cell phone when it
first comes out.

Does anyone know how long it generally takes for Apple to ship the
first batch of phones if you order online? I've heard that if you
order online at 3:00 a.m. EST on Friday, you can't select an option to
pick up in-store later that day. so if you want an unlocked phone
during the weekend, it looks like your choices are:

1) Order online when it comes out and hope it ships quickly.
2) Stand in-line.
3) Hope your phone is still available when you get off work Friday or Saturday.

When I ordered my 4S online, it took about two weeks to ship from China.

Hi all. Just curious about what different people will do when it comes
time to purchasing the iPhone 5s. Oh, and before I go on, just a point
to note, the s in the name 5s is lower-case because if it's a capital S
it looks too much like the number 5 visually, so Apple made it a small s
on purpose. So, the correct way of writing it is iPhone 5s. Anyway,
since you cannot pre-order the 5s, will you go to your local phone
carrier store, or to the Apple store? I'm just curious as to whether
people will go this Friday and wait long lines like Black Friday in the
US, or if they will wait a few days until the lines get less.

I'm pretty excited myself because this will be my first time getting a
new phone the day it comes out. In the past I've gotten it when it was
an afterthought, or in the case of the 4s, when it had been out for
about 4 months already. usually I wait in case there are initial
problems found with the first batch of hardware, but this time around
I'm diving in with my eyes closed as the saying goes.

Although all members are welcome to respond, I'm hoping that only people
who are getting the 5s will respond to this thread since I'm not asking
about whether it's a good idea, or if the 4s is better, or if we should
stay with what we have. This is because there are other viphone threads
 which have already covered this.

 Cheers.

Speaker Phone with Voiceover

2013-09-22 Thread Brice Smith
Hi, everyone.

Sometimes, my phone switches to speaker phone automatically when I
double tap to answer a call and bring the phone to my ear. This only
started happening after I updated to IOS 7. Before that, I could
always double tap, immediately lift the phone to my ear and start
talking with the speaker phone reliably turned off. Now, my phone will
occasionally switch to speaker phone even when the phone is next to my
head when I've just started a call.

I use my phone for work so this inconsistency is really frustrating.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Thanks,
Brice

Hi,

I have a 4S, but I just ordered an unlocked gold 5s. It's not going to
ship until October, so if this continues or gets worse I'm going to
have to do something about it. I'm fairly happy with IOS 7 but I

I would rather tap on the speaker phone button when I need it. This is
something I really can't stand about the design. Even if you're phone

phone will automatically switch back which is also frustrating. I
can't believe there's still not a way to disable this.

Re: Speaker Phone with Voiceover

2013-09-22 Thread Brice Smith
Thanks, Sieghard. I'll write to Apple. I don't know what good it will
do, but something is better than nothing. In the mean time, I wonder
if I should just start triple clicking the home button when my phone
rings so it won't automatically switch to speaker phone, but then I
won't be able to use the two finger double tap gesture to actually
answer the call if VO is turned off.

I'm in North Carolina in the United States. Yep, the online orders for
the gold phone slipped to October at 3:25 a.m. Eastern, 25 minutes
after it went on sale. Guess who ordered his phone online exactly at
3:25 a.m.?

I guess the color doesn't really matter but still, I want gold for
something different. I'm hoping October changes soon and I don't
have to wait several weeks. I'm also planning on checking my local
store now and then to see if they have any models. IMO, Apple really
messed up this launch with the gold phone. Since I purchase device
only, I could always go in store and then cancel the online order with
no repercussions if that option becomes available.

I also ordered an unlocked 5S on Friday, but while I had planned to get the
Gold one as well I decided to go with the Black/Space Grey one again since
it only showed a 7-10 day lead time and I didn't want to wait 6 or 7 weeks.
Are you in Canada, the States or elsewhere in the world? Apple told me on
the phone that October means it might not ship until the end of October
which means I would get it at the beginning of November. Of course it could
also ship the first week of October and 10 business days for my Space Grey
one means it could also ship as late as October 4, but hopefully it will be
 sooner.

I read on the Today in iOS website that 5S availability at Apple Stores
around the world was miserable and some stores had none or maybe only 1 or
 2
Gold 64 Gig phones. Apparently the Apple Store in Sidney Australia had an
800 meter line up, ann entire half mile.

This is correct. In the US, you now have several options for buying an
unlocked phone:

1) Buy the t-mobile, device only phone on apple.com. You'll pay the
full price, and it will come with a t-mobile sim already., but it's
fully unlocked and you can use whatever sim you want with it.

2) Go to an Apple store and buy, device only at full/unsubsidized
price, either the ATT phone or the Tmobile one.

You can also buy the Verizon model at full price, device only, from an
Apple store in the US. The advantage is that you have access to the
CDMA bands in addition to the GSM bands. However, I'm not sure if you
must activate the phone on Verizon before you can use it.

Again, if you buy device only from Apple, your phone is unlocked. If
you buy from a phone carrier, even at full price, your phone will be
locked.

Apple really doesn't advertise this stuff, probably because of
agreements with carriers, the general public not knowing/caring what
unlocked means, and to prevent people from buying tons of device only
ATT/Tmobile phones from Apple stores and selling them overseas.

For some reason, the unlocked version of the phones does not appear until a

they are already available in Europe. You could probably get one from ebay
but you may end up paying more for it.

But, just for the fun of it, I decided to go online last night and
check the Apple Store here in the United States. And, when I did, I
saw that one is still able to purchase and unlocked 5c, but not an
unlocked 5s. Oh, well, I probably would have purchased from my
carrier, anyway, but was thinking they might offer the unlocked 5s for
those who wanted it right away.

If you turn voiceover off and take the phone away from your ear, it

Re: no unlocked 5s when ordering from the Apple Store

2013-09-23 Thread Brice Smith
Verizon's iPhones are required by the FCC to be SIM unlocked. Google
this for more information. The SIM tray in the Verizon iPhone 5 and
later is GSM unlocked. Remember though, that Verizon uses CDMA for its
own network.

Posters on Macrumors forums have said they have walked out of the
Appple store after purchasing a Verizon 5s without needing to activate
on Verizon's network, and their SIM tray (for ATT/Tmobile) is
unlocked.

This link (iPhone 5) explains more:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/verizon-iphone-5-unlocked-att-t-mobile-video/

And this explains even more:
http://www.slashgear.com/iphone-5-to-remain-gsm-unlocked-at-verizon-24248997/

Also, buying an ATT 5S model from Apple directly at full price and
restoring it on iTunes will also unlock the device. This has also been
confirmed online.

There's a lot of information out there about this stuffnews sites,
forum posters and even Apple store employees all tell you different
things, depending on who you ask. So don't listen to me. Do your own
research and hopefully you'll end up with what you want.

For some reason, the unlocked version of the phones does not appear until
 a
month or 2 later. That's kind of surprising since they are definitely
 made,
they are already available in Europe. You could probably get one from
 ebay
but you may end up paying more for it.

I didn't rush to order the 5s this time. But, rather, finding that
none of my family members would want my 4S, I decided to hold off a
bit, and maybe even go to the Apple Store or ATT store in person to
see if I would get some sort of trade-in value for my old phone.

Re: VO sounds

2013-10-06 Thread Brice Smith
I love being able to turn VO sounds on and off. It might be one of my
favorite, most used features of IOS 7. I often want to silence the
ringer and text message volume but keep VO clicks on. I use VO sounds
for orientation purposes and always felt disoriented when they weren't
on before.

For those who find this inconvenient, remember that the real purpose
of the mute switch is to silence ringer and text alerts, not to make
the phone truly silent. In fact, vibration alerts can be more annoying
than ringing alerts for some people. Also, if the mute switch is down
but voiceover is still on and at a loud volume, you'll still hear it
speak at that loud volume if you unlock the phone, check the time,
ETC. Mentally, I think it's most helpful to think of the mute switch
as just that: a switch that mutes the ringer/phone noise. If you want
total silence, turn the phone off.

For myself, when I have my mute switch set to mute, I really want that

Re: VO sounds

2013-10-06 Thread Brice Smith
I suppose I don't really understand how VO sounds factor into
disruptions during meetings.

If you have the mute switch down with VO sounds still on, the ringer
volume is of course on vibrate. You will only hear a noise if you
flick right or left on the screen with voiceover, unless you turn VO
clicks off. What has burned me in the past in meetings is when I've
failed to turn the VO volume down on the phone with the physical
volume buttonsso even if I'm in vibrate mode, VO might loudly read
10:03, one notification for the entire room to hear, vibrate mode or
not. This is why I always turn the vibrate switch on, and I also take
the added step of turning VO volume down very low before I go
somewhere.

But I still don't understand how the VO clicks themselves are
inconveniencing people. They are not very loud or noticeable. They are
certainly nowhere near as disrupting as a loud Samantha that hasn't
been turned down.

On 10/6/13, Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote:
I agree completely with Cara here. I want to be able to hit the mute
button and turn off all sounds and VoiceOver. I don't want to be in a
meeting and realize I forgot to turn off the sounds on my phone and have
to unlock it so I can turn it off or go into settings to turn sounds
off. I don't always want to turn the phone off because I may want to
quickly look something up, check for messages or take a quick note. It
may be true that the mute button just turns off the ringer and alerts,
but those are the sounds a phone makes when VoiceOver isn't on. I think
the real purpose of the mute button, as used by sighted users, is to
mute the phone, i.e. turn all sounds off. The vibration may bother some,
but if the phone is in my pocket, it's much less bothersome to those
around me than having VoiceOver go off and start reading an alert.

Listening to Voiceover

2013-05-24 Thread Brice Smith
Hi,

I'm curious to know how you all listen and use your phones when you're
out in public. Do you use earbuds and an earpiece, or do you turn the
speech down low and do your best?

In noisy environments most people can just look down at their phones.
If you use speech, you want to be able to hear the speech without
everyone else hearing it or becoming distracted by it, too. Sometimes
I'll just hold the phone up toward my shoulder/ear and type/text so I
can keep the volume down real low for privacy, but this looks really
odd and unprofessional. I've thought about grabbing an earpiece or
earbuds, but I usually forget, or it's just something else to charge
and keep track of.

What works for you?

Re: Listening to Voiceover

2013-05-25 Thread Brice Smith
Thanks, Raul. You touch on the reason I started this; the whole
holding the phone up close to the ear and tapping away. This is what
I've naturally preferred, but a colleague pointed out how weird and
unprofessional it looks. It's not something I had thought about before
and I was kind of caught off guard. It does make sense how odd it
probably looks to hold a phone up chest level or next to your cheek or
ear and type, though.

I do not have hearing problems at all. Still, at least for me, I've
got to have the voice near my ear when typing because when using touch
typing it can be difficult to really hear Samantha in a lot of
environments without turning the volume up. These are the only times I
wish the iPhone had a physical keyboard.

Finally, the speakers on the iPhone 4s are kind of bad, anyway. When I
was using a Mophie Battery Juice case the speakers faced up which made
the sound clearer.

Just some observations.

Hi, to add to this discussion what I do is use a single-ear headset like
the Plantronics M50. I just recently purchased the Samsung HM1700 and am
liking the volume on it better than the M50, but I haven't found a
comfortable fit for it yet. So, still on the fence about that one. I
find that the single-ear headset is good for me because I can pull it
out right away if I need total hearing with both ears, but at the same
time it's not jammed in my ear totally covering it in case I need it
either. For phone calls the M50 sucks in my opinion, but for all the
other pros it offers I still think it's the best single-ear headset. If
I need something covering both of my ears I will either use the Motorola
S11 headset which wraps around the back of your neck, has great range,
and has great sound with playing music in both ears. It has a slightly
annoying delay which I'm not too proud of, but all Bluetooth headsets
have this delay. Some are just worse than others though. The M50 and the
HM1700 are ok, but the S11 isn't the best.

I try to avoid using wired connections because I like all that radiation
flowing through my skull and because since we are all going to die some
day, why not die cord free and happy? I don't have Apple earpods, and
I'm not sure if I will get them since I have a bit of choice of things
already. yes it's more to charge, but I also have a 3-in-1 charger usb
cable with the standard usb end on one side which plugs into a usb
charger wall plug on one end, and the other end has either a 30-pin for
iPhone 4, and then it has a lightning plug for iPhone 5 and newer, and
lastly, a Micro USB for the headsets or an Android phone.

Since I usually carry around a extra battery pack from new Trent which
holds either 6000 or 12,000 mAH depending on the one I use, I'm good
with not running out of juice if I'm around places I can't connect to a
 wall.

Lastly, if I don't have all my gadgets with me, I will hold the phone
close to my ear like I'm making a phone call and tap away that way. We
live in a sighted world and so I try to not appear to be socially inept,
however many sighted people do worse things, and we just don't know
about them because we can't see them. So, that helps me not worry too much.

 Hope that helps.

Re: Listening to Voiceover

2013-05-25 Thread Brice Smith
Thanks for the feedback everyone -- I certainly knew there wasn't
necessarily a one size fits all answer, but it's good to hear what
works for some of you and what doesn't for others.

Maybe certain bluetooth pieces work better than others to reduce lag?
I bought a pair to use while working out, but I can't imagine using it
every day because the lag is distracting. Whatever the case, I've also
thought about buying a cheap pair of earbuds and snapping off one of
the wires, so I would only have one simple wire to deal with and
nothing else hanging from my neck.

Thanks again,
Brice

 Hi Brice,

As Chuck and Richard already pointed out, a Bluetooth earpiece is one
solution. But as you say, it is another item you have to make sure is
charged up and I personally don't like it if I have to do any amount of
typing. I do own one and use it at times, but first of all I feel I look
like a nurd (no offense to anybody who wears it all day) and I just don't
like the small lag when I am typing, it makes typing on the virtual
 keyboard
even slower as it is. There is also a third reason why I don't want to have
it in all day and that is the fact that nobody really knows if it is all
 that healthy.

I very much prefer the Apple earpods, they are less conspicuous and even
lighter than even the lightest Bluetooth earpiece. Depending on where I am
and what I am doing I often just have the right one in my ear since it has
the microphone and remote and I just have the left one hanging around my
neck. It's become total habit for me to grab them in the morning, wrap them
around my hand and put them in my pocket.

In short, if you are in public and you don't want anybody to hear your
 phone
a headset or earpiece of some sort is your only option. I personally
wouldn't be too worried about people listening to a text message I might
type, somebody really would have to pay attention to put together what you
are typing if they hear a letter at a time, but of course if it's noisy a
headset really is the way to go and it has the additional benefit that you
can keep your phone on your belt or in your pocket when a call comes in.

Vibrate and keyboard clicks

2012-12-29 Thread Brice Smith
Hello, everyone.

Is it possible to keep keyboard clicks on while the phone is on
vibrate mode? I like keeping my ringing volume on vibrate but I also
hate typing on the keyboard when I don't have auditory clicks or
feedback. Even when keyboard clicks are turned on under sound, you
will not hear then when the vibrate switch is on. Is there a way I can
fix this?

Tiny External Battery

2013-12-27 Thread Brice Smith
Hi,

Does anyone here use a small, external battery pack? I'm considering
different options, but I'm not sure if I really need one of the giant
packs that fits in a bag or briefcase. I know many of you use 6,000 or
even as high as 18,000 mAh packs, but that's just one more thing you
have to carry around with you. I had a battery case for my old 4S, but
eventually grew tired of the weight on the sleek phone and took it off.

I've heard of a couple battery packs that are small enough to fit on
a key ring like a thumb drive or at least small enough to sit in a
pants pocket. These seem to be rare, though. There's one called the
JuiceBuddy, but it looks like it is only for the old 4/4S. I also saw
a Mophie 700 mAh charger and the reviews are mixed. Have any of you
bought one of these smaller keychain battery chargers?

 Thanks,
 Brice

iPhone Keyboard

2014-04-17 Thread Brice Smith
Hi,

This might be an odd question, but I’ve been curious for months so here goes:

Why does the default iPhone keyboard look different depending on the
application you use, and is there a way to change this?

Ever since IOS 7, the iPhone keyboard that appears on screen has
looked different than previous versions of the operating system, and I
know that low-vision users complained about the look of this for a
while. But the keyboard also looks different depending on the
application you’re in.

The keyboard in the messaging app, for example, is very bright and the
keys look kind of faded. But the same Apple on-screen keyboard in
Search iPhone or in the Youtube app looks much darker, and the keys
stand out to someone with low vision.

Does anyone know why the on-screen keyboard looks different depending
on what you’re doing? Is it possible to set the darker keyboard as
default?

Thanks.

Advocating for VO Accessibility

2014-08-11 Thread Brice Smith
Hello, everyone.

What resources do you use to explain Voiceover to application
developers? When contacting people to ask for accessibility, how much
explaining is typically required to get the ball rolling? Do you find
that this process takes a lot of explaining, or does simply mentioning
VO get the job done?

Removing a SIM

2014-10-01 Thread Brice Smith
Hi, everyone.

Is there anything I should be aware of when removing a SIM card from
one iPhone and transferring it to another? I’m getting a new unlocked
6 Plus tomorrow, and I’ll probably switch out the Nano SIM from my 5S
myself – something I’ve never done before. I understand that the Nano
SIM is much smaller than a regular SIM, and some online research has
shown that I’ll need to use a paper clip to help me get the SIM out.
Does the SIM have to be inserted into a phone a certain way?
Basically, I know this question may seem silly – but I’m wondering if
there’s anything else I should keep in mind or be aware of when doing
this tactically, as I won’t be able to really rely on pictures or
guides if I get stuck.

Thanks.

Hi, Mark and Sieghard. Thanks for your responses. I had no major

Mark, the T-Mobile iPhone, purchased directly from Apple, is unlocked.
Thanks,

 Hi Brice,

Yes, you need to use a paper clip or the little tool which should come with
your iPhone to push down in the hole next to the SIM tray. This will pop it
out a bit and then you can pull it out.

The Nano SIM is very tiny and yes, it only goes in one way.

Also, when you pull out the tray, make sure you don';t turn it over
otherwise it won't go back in.

As for the card, it has one corner which is slightly cut off. This can be
hard to feel on a Nano SIM because it's so tiny. If you can feel it, the
cut-off corner goes towards the power button on the side of the phone or, if
you are facing the edge of the phone with the SIM tray, it will be to the
 right.
The cut-off corner also stays towards the edge or outside of the phone. In
other words, the side opposite to the cut-off corner goes in the phone first
just like you would slide a knife into its case point first.

Make sure you do this on a table or a surface where you can easily find the
 card should you drop it.

 Siegard

Re: Google Maps+Blindsquare or Seeing Eye GPS?

2016-02-11 Thread Brice Smith
The Seeing Eye app gives detailed information about intersections,
includes turn-by-turn directions and can also optionally pull POIs
from Google Places instead of just four Square. Otherwise, Google (or
Apple) maps plus BlindSquare is a fantastic combination.

You won’t get detailed intersection information with BlindSquare. But
you get an arguably smoother UI; the ability to plan a route with the
navigation application of your choice (and thus live traffic
rerouting, which Seeing Eye's turn-by-turn navigation does not
support), less battery drain than the Seeing Eye App, the ability to
simulate your destination and explore the new area, plus plenty of
other features.

I would actually like to hear more about country-specific apps and
services people use in this thread. I think this local/regional
knowledge is informative for everyone and may be useful to travelers.
For example, can you share with us the best GPS apps that work in
Scandinavia? I'm assuming that BlindSquare, Apple Maps and Google Maps
all work there to some degree.

Re: Uber and Siri?

2016-09-16 Thread Brice Smith
Hi Jenifer,
I’ve played around with ordering Uber with Siri. IMO, the experience
is not customizable enough for what I need. When you ask Siri to book
a ride, she asks what type of ride you want, and then tells you how
far away the ride would be and asks if you want to book it. I like to
specify a more specific location in the pick-up field than what gets
automatically placed there based on GPS (i.e. I’ll type in “Burger
King” instead of just the address itself), and I haven’t found a way
to customize that level of detail with Siri. So far, I've had no luck
issuing more specific Siri commands to get what I need.

Furthermore, accessibility problems are not the only problems. There’s
a troubling tendency among consumers of assistive technology to
believe that if we didn’t use assistive technology, our user
experience would be perfect. But If you have an Android phone running
7.1.1, you might encounter problems with Bluetooth, reception, or
sound/speakers. And some iPhone users are concerned with battery,
VoLTE/LTE/Wifi and iCloud issues.

Technology is always changing and far from perfect.

Re: Apple Naps

2017-11-28 Thread Brice Smith
Turn-by-turn directions are no longer fully announced with VoiceOver
as of iOS 11. If spoken directions indicate to "turn left on King
Street in .5 miles," VoiceOver only announces "0.5 miles, King street"
when exploring the screen. This means that VO users who turn off audio
announcements can no longer use Apple Maps for directions.

Re: Does Anyone Know of a Good Taxi App in the USA? Not Uber or Lift

2017-12-12 Thread Brice Smith
If you are just looking for a listing of taxi services with phone
numbers based on your current location, AroundMe should work for you.

Siri Shortcut for Google Assistant

2018-12-18 Thread Brice Smith
Has anyone else lost the ability to use Siri shortcuts to access the
Google Assistant?

When I use my recorded phrase, Siri now always says “you’ll need to
continue in Assistant.” My other shortcuts still work. I tried
deleting and reinstalling this shortcut without success, so I’m
starting to think that Apple has blocked this particular shortcut.

Re: Siri Shortcut for Google Assistant

2018-12-18 Thread Brice Smith
I’m hoping it’s just a bug, but I can imagine Apple removing this one for
obvious reasons. It actually seemed too good to be true while it lasted.
