Subject: Weird itunes mystery.

Hi, everyone.
First, before I get into what's going on, let me say that i'm using an
ipod touch fifth gen, and that my computer is running windows xp and
Itunes 11.4.
Yes, I know, my OS is ancient, please don't tell me that.
Now, on to the mystery.
About a month ago, I downloaded an AudioBoom update, didn't like it,
and tried to go back to the previous version.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the right version on my computer, so I
restored my ipod from an icloud backup in order to get my previous app
back.
The restore worked, eventually. The first few times it kept saying it
couldn't copy some of my apps because they weren't available, but I
was eventually able to complete a restore.
I import all of my music from cds, using itunes to sync it to my ipod.
Because of the restore, my music wasn't coppied over.
So I tried to sync my ipod to get my music back, only to be told that
my ipod couldn't be used because it required a newer version of
itunes.
Now, for the mystery. My iphone 5, which is running the exact same
version of IOS as my ipod (when this started it was 9.3.1, and still
happens with 9.3.2), will sync just fine.
i've tried everything I can think of to get this working, with no
success. I even downloaded the IPSW file for IOS9.3.1, put my ipod
into recovery mode and restored with that, no luck.
Now, there is a newer version of itunes that'll work on xp, but I
don't like itunes 12, and because my phone will still sync fine, see
no real reason to update.
Has anyone had this kind of thing happen to them? If so, what can I do
to get my music back onto my ipod? I've even tried various wifi file
sharing apps, but they all just keep the files inside themselves,
since apple won't allow us to copy music to the ipod's internal
library without itunes.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, this is super frustrating.

Hi, Mark.

You're right, you can seriously screw up your computer if you go
messing around in the registry and don't know what you're doing. So
no, it's not something I feel comfortable trying.
Litterally all I want to do is copy my existing music library to my
ipod, I hardly ever even make changes to said music library. If there
was a way to copy the exact music from my iphone to my ipod I'd do it,
like yesterday.

RE: Weird itunes mystery.

2016-05-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Cheryl,

The solution I came up with is far beyond the scope of this list.

All I can say is:

1.
Many people do not realize the power of the Windows Registry. More often than
not, the reason why an application will or won't do something is because of
various switches/arguments either being enabled or disabled in the Registry.

2.
I strongly recommend against anyone manually configuring the Windows Registry
as doing so, especially in XP, usually results in either disaster or unexpected
consequences.

Finally, even after almost 15 years of dealing with the Registry, I only edit
it as a last resort before wiping my system clean. The Windows Registry is not
for the novice or, for that matter, even for the intermediate user, and that's
putting it nicely (smile).

So, again I urge you to just leave things as they are and, as Christopher
suggested, accepts that sooner or later, you will have to update to a later
version of iTunes/Windows in order to synchronize up-to-date iOS devices.

Well, I still don't consider this a mystery. I Googled a bit, and I
couldn't find a support statement from Apple, but I'm sure iTunes 11.04
running on Windows XP is not a supported configuration by Apple. I'd
consider this an unpredictable result when running a configuration that
isn't tested or supported by Apple. If some things, like syncing to some
devices, is still working, then consider yourself lucky. I wouldn't
assume that it'll continue to work indefinitely though, and you can't
assume that new features and products will still be supported by older
versions of software that are no longer being supported. Note that I
have no problem with you running Windows XP or iTunes 11.04; I'm just
saying, you're going to have to accept some limitations with such a set up.

Hello Cheryl,

I strongly suspect that the asymmetry you are experiencing has something to do
with the Windows Registry. Strangely enough, I recently experienced a similar
phenomenon on my Windows 7 machine. It drove me crazy for three days.
Finally, because of some fuzzy-logic, on my part, some out-of-the-box thinking
of some of my friends, and a great deal of Google searches, oh yes, and a
prayer, I was able to get everything working without having to wipe my system.

My advice is to just accept what is and leave it alone if you want to continue
to use iTunes 11.4.

Re: Weird itunes mystery.

2016-05-21 Thread Cheryl LeFurgey
I'm running ios9.3.2 on both my iphone 5 and my ipod touch 5g.
I litterally just connected my phone to itunes 11.4 and it synced,
with absolutely no problems.
However, when I connect my ipod, running the same version of Ios,
itunes pops up the this ipod cannot be used because it requires itunes
12.2.2 or later error message.
So yes, I'd say there's a mystery here somewhere.
Also no, I don't have any IPSW files downloaded anywhere, at least not
that I know of.

I don't think there's a mystery here. I'm prety sure you'll need a newer
version of iTunes if you're going to install IOS 9.3.2. What version of
IOS do you have on your phone now? An older version of iTunes syncing
with an older version of IOS is to be expected. Also syncing isn't the
same as installing a new version of IOS with al of it's new features
that may require a newer version of iTunes.

I assume if you start the install then the install will halt since
iTunes won't actually be able to fetch up a copy of 9.1 and iTunes 11.04
won't support 9.3.2.

Alan,

Everything I've googled does support the idea that ITunes 12.x is
required,
that's why the fact that my phone will sync is such a mystery. Not
that
i'm
complaining, of course!
I can connect my phone, it pops up in my sources list, and I can add

Yeah, if I do call, the people at apple will probably hear the words
windows
xp and start laughing. Well no, but everyone else says xp is
outdated,
not
secure, bla bla bla. It works just fine here, I have no issues, I'll
update
when I'm good and ready.
Hopefully I can get this resolved, it's kind of annoying to have an

not be able to play music on it. I mean sure I could copy my library
to

What version of iTunes are you running? that's the only reason I can
imagine you wouldn't be told you'd be getting 9.3.2 after the restore. I
doubt Apple would actually start installing a version of IOS that isn't
even available any more and end up bricking your phone. If it were me,
I'd take the chance, but I definitely don't blame anyone for being more
cautious messing with a device that might be very critical in your daily
life.

Alan,

Everything I've googled does support the idea that ITunes 12.x is
required,
that's why the fact that my phone will sync is such a mystery. Not that
i'm
complaining, of course!
I can connect my phone, it pops up in my sources list, and I can add
music
to it, which is all i use itunes for.
Yeah, if I do call, the people at apple will probably hear the words
windows
xp and start laughing. Well no, but everyone else says xp is outdated,
not
secure, bla bla bla. It works just fine here, I have no issues, I'll
update
when I'm good and ready.
Hopefully I can get this resolved, it's kind of annoying to have an
ipod
and
not be able to play music on it. I mean sure I could copy my library to
dropbox and use that app to play music, but that kind of defeats the
purpose, IMO.

Since you were getting your iTunes 11.4 to sync okay before this
problem arose, I guess something about my information was incorrect. I
too have a desktop system running Windows XP but I'm transitioning to
another desktop system running Windows 7 which is the one on which I
run iTunes. I ran iTunes 11.4 on my Windows 7 system until day before
yesterday when I upgraded it to version
12.4 since I was finally ready to upgrade to iOS 9.x and believed
iTunes 12.x was required to get correct functionality between iTunes
and a device running iOS 9.x.

As Richard suggested, maybe Apple Accessibility will be able to help
but I suspect they're going to start that upgrade your iTunes rallying
cry when they learn you're running iTunes 11.4.

I hope you're able to resolve your issue.

Hi Cheryl,

If all you do is use that XP machine for iTunes and a few other things it's
fine. If, however, you use it for spending time online, possibly buying items
online or, even worse, doing things like online banking and so on you really
putting yourself at risk. There have been no security updates for XP in some
time and people who use it for things where security is a concern are putting
themselves at a pretty big risk. Just saying.

Cheryl,

I agree with you one hundred percent and I still use my Windows XP box to run
older programs that I had no interest in acquiring versions compatible with
Windows 7. I've always believed that you should run the operating system that
you know and that runs the programs you need to get your work done. Windows XP
still does an awful lot of that for me.

That's great that your iPhone running iOS 9.x is still working with iTunes 11.4
but it is a bit curious based on what I've also read. Your iPod is acting more
as I would expect but the inconsistency of the two devices is baffling.

Good luck managing the inconsistency and I'll keep my fingers crossed that your
iPhone and iTunes keep on working.

Alan,

Everything I've googled does support the idea that ITunes 12.x is required,
that's why the fact that my phone will sync is such a mystery. Not that i'm
complaining, of course!
I can connect my phone, it pops up in my sources list, and I can add music to
it, which is all i use itunes for.
Yeah, if I do call, the people at apple will probably hear the words windows xp
and start laughing. Well no, but everyone else says xp is outdated, not secure,
bla bla bla. It works just fine here, I have no issues, I'll update when I'm
good and ready.
Hopefully I can get this resolved, it's kind of annoying to have an ipod and
not be able to play music on it. I mean sure I could copy my library to dropbox
and use that app to play music, but that kind of defeats the purpose, IMO.

RE: Weird itunes mystery.

2016-05-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Cheryl,

I wish I had an answer for you but I was under the impression that those
running iOS 9.x had to run iTunes 12.x to get correct iTunes behavior with
their iDevices for things like syncing and backing up. Since you were getting
your iTunes 11.4 to sync okay before this problem arose, I guess something
about my information was incorrect. I too have a desktop system running Windows
XP but I'm transitioning to another desktop system running Windows 7 which is
the one on which I run iTunes. I ran iTunes 11.4 on my Windows 7 system until
day before yesterday when I upgraded it to version 12.4 since I was finally
ready to upgrade to iOS 9.x and believed iTunes 12.x was required to get
correct functionality between iTunes and a device running iOS 9.x.

As Richard suggested, maybe Apple Accessibility will be able to help but I
suspect they're going to start that upgrade your iTunes rallying cry when they
learn you're running iTunes 11.4.

I hope you're able to resolve your issue.

hello,
Next idea, from someone who has no PC, is there a reset iTunes option in there,
somewhere? Or remove everything iPod related, once it backs up, but before
doing that, back up to iCloud?

Yes, I know, my OS is ancient, please don't tell me that.
 Now, on to the mystery.
About a month ago, I downloaded an AudioBoom update, didn't like it,
and tried to go back to the previous version.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the right version on my computer, so I
restored my ipod from an icloud backup in order to get my previous
 app
 back.
The restore worked, eventually. The first few times it kept saying
 it
couldn't copy some of my apps because they weren't available, but I
was eventually able to complete a restore.
I import all of my music from cds, using itunes to sync it to my
 ipod.
Because of the restore, my music wasn't coppied over.
So I tried to sync my ipod to get my music back, only to be told
 that
my ipod couldn't be used because it required a newer version of

If so, what can I
 do
to get my music back onto my ipod? I've even tried various wifi file
sharing apps, but they all just keep the files inside themselves,
since apple won't allow us to copy music to the ipod's internal
 library without itunes.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, this is super frustrating.

probably do is tell me to update itunes which, since my phone is
syncing fine, I don't see the need to do right now.

Also, wouldn't restoring my ipod from my icloud backup just put all
the same information back on it, basically recreating the same

2016-05-20 Thread Cheryl LeFurgey
I don't know, because when I connect my ipod to itunes it immediately
pops up the message about not being able to use the ipod because it
requires a newer version of itunes.
When I cancel out of the message, my ipod isn't even listed under
sources, so it's like itunes doesn't even see it.

Re: Weird itunes mystery.

2016-05-20 Thread Kimber Gardner
Is the music still in the iTunes library but it just won't sync to the
iPod? If you were to rip a CD, one that isn't in the "old" library of
music, would that one sync to the device?
