Present problem, I needed to use my iPad away from home. Set up Graham’s iPhone as hot spot, turned off wifi on iPad to do it. Turned wifi on again. Did not need to use the iPad after all, left it at home, this was on Tuesday.
All well until today, iPhone tells me to turn on wifi for better location services. Didn’t think I had turned it off. Hit the button, I can’t remember what it said but whatever it was I assumed it would turn wifi on. I cursed myself for using 4G for lengthy phone calls but it was necessary because our landline has had an intermittent fault for over 2 weeks, off 50% of time, Telstra technician hasn’t been able to solve it.
Connection unsuccessful. Message make sure “VW BT 3209” is turned on and in range.
But it is connected, icons for Telstra and wifi. I have no idea what this device is.
Looked in Bluetooth which shows both my iPad and this device as unconnected. I get the equivalent message to above. But Find my iPhone on my iPad shows my iPad and my old iPad 4 as connected. No mention of foreign device.
Find my iPhone on the iPhone, logged me out for my own protection, logged in again, it shows my two iPads, the iPhone doesn’t appear.
At one stage I managed to select the foreign device (I can’t remember how). Forget this device was greyed out, I tried to Sync contacts, the only other option got the same error message.
On my iPad the only device in Bluetooth is the iPhone.
I turned off Bluetooth on the iPhone, powered down and restarted. Unknown device still there.
Should I turn Bluetooth off, if warns me against it?
The only other thing that might be relevant is that I noticed Graham has not turned on Two-Factor Authentication.
I haven’t a clue what to do next nor whether this has serious implications. Any suggestions?

Or look in you sent mailbox. Locate the sent message - Go to View >

All seems to be working fine.

I had planned to uninstall 2011 before installing 2016.

Re: Kernel Panic ?

2017-10-02 Thread Rob Phillips
Suggestions, without specifics of what to do - I don't have Ronni's
memory for this. :-}

 * Time machine should not have re-installed the OS
 * There may be some corrupt prefs files which were coped back.

 * Use Console.app to look at the logs of what has been going wrong.
Look at the time things went wrong to see what the problem might be
 * Boot up in diagnostic mode to do a hardware test - maybe done already
 * Boot up in Safe mode and see if the machine works OK. This will tell
you that it's a system extension which is causing the problem
 * Download the OS-specific version of Sierra Cache Cleaner (e.g. Tiger
Cache Cleaner), and clear the caches - follow the instructions -
don't just do them all at once.

Good luck

He has a 27 inch iMac 2012 with the latest OS.

However a few days ago he got this on every start up.
So he went to the Dubai Apple Shop.
They ran checks and said the hardware is fine but the issue is with
the OS.

So they reformatted the HD and re-installed the OS for him.

When he got home he used Time Machine to recover his files.
But he now thinks Time Machine re-installed the corrupt OS.
Because the issue has returned.

He and I are unsure of the best procedure to follow to correct this issue.

Because he is an Emirates Captain his emails and data are very

Although he also has a SuperDuper backup it is too far behind to be a

Any suggestions of best procedure to follow would be gratefully

Yes Neil, the smaller ISPs don’t have enough ‘Backhaul’ to handle
congestion times - a lack of virtual capacity on the network that
slows some connections to a crawl.

I’m more than happy with my existing package and speed (happily stream
iView & SBS on demand) until I am forced to change to NBN – I expect
it will cost me more but offer me no real benefit.

Part of the trouble is that the ISPs seem to base their expected
traffic on pre-NBN usage – but as Smart TVs and other streaming
devices become more widely used bandwidth consumption increases
rapidly and NBN wholesale costs are expensive – so to maintain their
margins they either have to scrimp on bandwidth or charge much more.

I expect quite a lot of consumer complaints about actual service
standards.

Just my 2c worth   ;o)

Keyboard covers MB Pro 2016?

2017-07-18 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi all

I've been trying to get a keyboard cover for my 2016 model MacBook Pro.
Macworx, Apple Store Perth and JB HiFi don't sell these.

I bought one online from HK, but it was for the older model with
Function Keys - waste of money!

Does anyone know where I can reliably source one?

Re: Speccing a MacBookPro 15"

2017-07-18 Thread Rob Phillips

I've been away - hence the delayed reply...

I bought a 2016 15" MB Pro last December.

I decided on the 1TB SSD, because I couldn't justify the cost of the 2TB
drive. I added a 3TB magnetic drive to 'archive' stuff not often used.

I also bought an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock, with USB, Firewire, and
Thunderbolt ports. This was a mistake, because I overlooked the fact
that this was Thunderbolt 2, not Thunderbolt 3. At the time, I don't
think there was a Thunderbolt 3 dock available. The dock and cables cost
me about $500. I guess there are Thunderbolt 3 docks available now.

Certainly, the 1TB SSD drive boots very quickly, but the peripherals and
SSD upgrades were expensive.

Re dongles - I don't think there are enough ports to connect all the
peripherals you may need with dongles - I regularly use 3-4 usb ports,
and an HDMI port.

Cheers

book will significantly improve it’s

perform better than the 2008 laptop. If you stay up-to-date with

Advice sought: internet-based home intercom

2017-05-01 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi

I hope this isn't too far off-topic.

Our property has 3 households (us, mother-in-law, sister-in-law) 100m
apart. There is an ethernet cable between 2 of the houses which goes
past the elderly mother-in-law, and wifi in each of the other dwellings.
All traffic goes out to the world through our house, so it's all on one
sub-net.

Now, mother-in-law is recovering from a broken hip.

Does anyone know of an intercom device which can operate between the 3
houses over the existing ethernet? It has to be extremely simple for Mum
to operate.

Thanks in advance

Hi Gary

Suggestions:

 * quit and relaunch Safari
 * restart the Mac
 * if this doesn't work, check if it is only one (or some) websites
which cause the problem. It could be that the Mac/ OS/ Safari

 * Try a different browser

Of course the delete cache option might also work. If you can't remember

Hope this helps

Re: iMac periodically slows down ?

2017-02-27 Thread Rob Phillips

A couple of ideas.

It could be some rogue/corrupt software, e.g. flash doing something on a
web page.
Start up Activity Monitor from Applications/ Utilities and check for
anything using lots of CPU.

It could also be some corruption in your file system and/or 'indexing'
of files to make searching easier.

It's time to boot off an emergency disk and run Disk Utility. I can
never remember the magic keys to hold down to do this - one choice is to
hold down the Option key while rebooting...

Hope this helps

Dropbox could well be involved, depending on what you have stored
there. Just as an example, Dropbox has the annoying habit of asking
you if you want to store your photos there, every time you attach a
mobile device or an SD card. A friend of mine brought her work’s
network to its knees after unwittingly agreeing to this, at which
point Dropbox commenced syncing over 1200 photos to its servers. The
activity saturated their little wireless router, rendering the
network virtually unusable while her computer was on.

I’m not saying this is necessarily the problem in your case, but it
would be instructive to have a look at just what you have in your
Dropbox folder. Dropbox is certainly a safe, reliable service, but
like everything it does need a little care and attention. I make sure
I only use it for smallish files. The really important stuff I keep
at home.

apps, so I can keep using Keyboard Maestro - THE BEST productivity
software there is.

A problem is that I have quite large hands, and when I'm using the
laptop on my lap, my left pinkie finger tends to touch the touchbar,
and then strange things happen, depending whether I touch Esc, F1 or
other functions in different modes. With the old function keys, just
touching didn't matter.

Now to my problem. Since I've had the machine, I'm getting regular
crashes of certain Apps, mainly Mozilla: Thunderbird. Mozilla crash
reporter also crashes! And last night my Garmin Basecamp software did
the same.

Has anyone had any problems with the new MBP, Sierra and Mozilla
apps? I've done some searching on the web, and nothing has come up.

Apparently this affects Mozilla apps because they build with an older SDK.

<http://indiestack.com/2016/12/touch-bar-crash-protection/>

“These crashes seem to affect all apps that were built with a certain
toolchain. Most likely it affects all apps that were built against an
SDK of a certain vintage. For example, some of my apps that are still
built against a 10.6 SDK crash on Touch Bar Macs, either frequently or
infrequently, depending upon the user.”

I disconnected it, and plugged in the mouse from my older iMac. This

Going to System Preferences/Mouse with the old mouse was also normal.
When I disconnected the wired mouse and switched on the new wireless

"No mouse found". Turning the wireless mouse off and on again at first

Is there anything further I can do to check the wireless mouse, or
should I seek help from Apple?

Re: Resetting iCloud - Photos sync data

census last year illustrates that no system is safe from database corruption.

If someone has more than one Apple device and wants to share content between
the devices or make it possible for one device to access another, it should be
that person's decision to set the system up so that that can be done.

We don't all live in a location with ready Internet access, or quick upload and
download speeds. Nor do we all live in a place where access to the Internet is
cheap.

In other words the decision to transmit data over the internet should be a
conscious deliberate decision made by the person who owns the data, and causing
the data to be uploaded by default for commercial gain is reprehensible.

Fair question Michael,

The advantage of iCloud syncing as I see it, is that you can have one ‘master’
computer where you download and store the originals photos, AS WELL AS storing
the full sized versions on the cloud. This enables Time Machine and Super Duper
to back up the photos if iCloud flies away into dark matter. I’ve lost many
photos before due to hard disk failure and don’t want to go through that again.

The other advantage is that it only downloads smaller images to all the other
devices, sized to suit that device. The entire photo library is on each of
these devices, all 15000, not like using Photo Stream which only put 1000
photos on the mobile devices. I am not likely to NEED to view all those on
the other devices, but inevitably when I wanted to show someone a photo from a
year before for example, when using Photo Stream, and iTunes sync, it was not
in either folder.

I did try to do what you suggest, but the MacBook Pro did not have enough
storage capacity for the full Photos Library, and there was really no need to
have more than one computer with full sized images. If you need to edit or
print the full sized images, they are downloaded from iCloud as needed to the
specific device.

I trust this explains my logic.

I have stopped taking photos in RAW which complicates matters somewhat when
sharing via iCloud. What I have found is that a photo that has both JPEG and
RAW version is impossible to select between in iOS devices. So if I want to
attach a photo to an email, it must be in JPEG not RAW, and several times I
have done it, only the RAW version - at some 20mb - is able to be attached. I’m
now taking full sized JPEG instead and these run to around 8mb per image, and
the size is managed by Mail when sending. I am not sure if there is a way
around the way iCloud manages RAW image syncing to iOS devices - happy to hear
suggestions.

Re: Disk Utilites

2016-12-28 Thread Rob Phillips

G'day

I've just had a problem on one of my backup/ archive drives, and I was
fiddling around trying to recover it.

Diskutil didn't work, even though I tried it several times - this
sometimes works to recover a disk.

I bought Techtools last year, on a special advertised through WAMUG. It
didn't do anything extra to recover my volume (although it is useful
otherwise).

Some google searches told me of specific Terminal commands to try, but
they didn't help on this occasion.

I was left with no option but to reformat the disk. :-(

After reformatting, I thought to recover the lost files. TechTools could
do nothing because I hadn't turned on its file recovery function for
this drive. :-(

If I had a copy of DiskWarrior, I could probably have recovered my data
(movies) with it. However, I stopped buying this a few years ago,
because they were charging USD100 for an upgrade with each OSX upgrade.

I hope this is helpful background.

Hi folks.

Does anyone know if it is really worth buying third party disk
utility these days ?

EG: Disk Warrior or Tech Tool for example.

If you are running El Capitan or Sierra, My short answer is /*“No,
its not worth buying third-party Disk Utilities these days”*/
I've always had Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and other
third-party utilities installed on my earlier Macs and used them
quite frequently.
But I don’t even have these utilities installed on my current Macs
since probably Yosemite OS X 10.10 - my current Macs are running
Sierra 10.12.2

(I still have the above utilities installed on my Support Drive).

Or can most things be covered by Mac Disk Utility ?

“Apple has made ongoing hardware and software improvements that keep
disks running happily more of the time.
OS X performs certain disk maintenance tasks automatically in the
background—for example, it defragments smaller files on the fly,
keeping all their segments contiguous on a hard disk so they’ll load
faster. (Solid-state drives don’t require such defragging.)

And, when you perform a Safe Boot (starting your Mac with the Shift
key held down), OS X runs a more extensive set of diagnostic and
repair procedures without you doing anything else.
These and other improvements to OS X have reduced frequency of disk
errors. In addition, Disk Utility has gained a number of new features
in recent years, and it can now repair faults that might once have
been out of its reach.”

If you look over the feature lists of the major disk utilities, you
will find that they all advertise capabilities that Disk Utility
already offers for free. The three third-party programs can check a
drive’s SMART (self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology)
status, repair disk permissions, and repair at least some types of
volume corruption. Drive Genius and TechTool Pro can create a
bootable duplicate of your disk and securely erase free space, and
Drive Genius can also initialize and format drives.

/*But Disk Utility does all that, too.*/

Disk repair always requires you to start up from a separate volume.
But as long as your Mac is running at least Lion or new OS X , you
don’t need a second drive; simply restart while holding Command-R to
use OS X Recovery, which boots your Mac from a hidden partition (or,
in some cases, over the Internet) so you can run Disk Utility.

The third-party utilities, by contrast, ship on bootable DVDs—except
that they can’t boot the newest Mac models (not even if you use an
external SuperDrive, for Mac models that lack an internal one). So in
order to repair your startup disk, you’ll need to create a separate
boot volume with the disk utility installed. (TechTool Pro’s eDrive
is the sole exception here, behaving much like OS X’s Recovery HD.)

I get the occasional slow down and more rarely freeze at start up
and want to run some checks.

  * *Try Safe Mode:*
  * Some problems can be solved with Safe Mode. Restart your Mac. As
soon as you hear the startup chime, press and hold the Shift key
until you see the grey Apple logo.
  * The startup process may take a while; once it’s done the words
“Safe Boot” should appear in red in the login screen menu bar.
  * Log in and you’ll see a progress bar as Sierra runs diagnostics
and clean-up processes. (It also disables software that loads at
startup and login.)
  * If the problem goes away, restart again normally. The problem is
most likely due to third-pa

Re: ERRATIC BEHAVIOUR OF NOTIFICATION CENTRE NC

Hi Marcus
I like the way you're doing your troubleshooting. Very systematic. I
don't use Mail myself, but it could be that the Mail database is
corrupt. Google this, and see what you need to do to repair the database.

Operation successful.

Anyway I ejected the backup disc and disconnected it from the iMac. [I

Activity Monitor read NC as using 0.1%CPU and it opened and closed
correctly until I commenced using MAIL.
So, ten minutes later it’s doing it again. 90% CPU, 600MB Memory, but
refusing to respond.

Ten minutes later, the MAIL alerts appear again.
I have turned off Safari and with no web browser running NC is non

It’s Gotta be MAIL thay’s causing this.
I have to delete most of my INBOX and maybe the ARCHIVE.
OR Should I uninstall MAIL and reinstall it?
How to do this efficiently is my new question?

 1. You don't need a Time Capsule to run Time Machine (if I

it isn't really an option in poor old Australia...
 3. I suspect that your backup disk (time machine or time capsule)

Time Machine:
Size of backup disk: Too small
Backup size 1.00 TB < (Disk used 350.63 GB X 3)

Your iMac’s Macintosh HD is *2TB size* and you are backing up to a
*1TB size drive*.
Your Time Machine backup Drive should be at least 2 times the size
of all the data you are backing up.

Time Machine requires that your destination volume have, as a bare
minimum, 2 times the space occupied by the data you’re backing up.
(That gives some extra space to store multiple versions of at least
some files.)
So, as a first pass, multiply the “Used” value you see in the Get
Info window by 2 to find out the smallest partition size Time
Machine can use.

You’ll be far better off setting aside *3 times the amount of space
used on your disk for backups*.

The reason is simple: the more space Time Machine has to work with
on the destination drive, the more backups it can store—and the
farther back in time you can reach when you restore data.

My Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro 1TB HD is to a 3TB Time
Capsule drive and the backups go back to January 2012

Just type in the 'instructions' after the 'cryptodomus$' bit, and press

I wouldn’t be concerned except when NC is functioning it reveals
Mail alerts which cover the RHS of the screen and cannot be deleted.
In fact if I point the mouse any where near the alerts, the system
will freeze with the spinning wheel turning for up to 20 seconds.

I have turned all the NC alerts off and that clears that up. As
soon as I turn Mail back on the alerts reappear and block the screen.

Then I have to restart.

I have a lot of emails in iCloud as I’m uncertain how to delete them

Have you had a good read on how to use Notification centre in Sierra?
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25142?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  macOS Sierra: Use Notification Center.

Alerts, alarms, reminders, email-chances are you see a steady
stream every day. Notification Center is Sierra's Grand Central
Station for the information competing for your attention. It's
settings control which apps can post messages to the upper-right
corner of your display, as well as how those messages look.
The Notification Center sidebar, which slides in from the right of
your screen, gives you an overview of it all.

Have you set control Notifications' look? Individual notifications
appear at the top-right of the screen. You can tweak how they
appear, or whether they appear at all, on an app-by-app basis.
Go to System Preferences > Notifications and select an app from the
list at the left. Now set up the way that app will notify you at
the right. You can pick from three Notification styles.

Hi,
I’m still trying to resolve this corruption of (NC) Notification

NC operated well with El Capitan but is problematic with Sierra.

I think it is due to interference between Google and Apple mail
accounts.
I have tried turning them on and off alternately and the freezing
of NC arises when email notices present to be either closed or
replied to.
If I try either of those options, nothing happens and the NC
freezes for up to 20 seconds.

As long as these email notices don’t appear I can switch on NC.

BY THE WAY the email notices that appear are all from my gmail

I’m going to turn off gmail completely and access them from the

Thunderbolt 3, which provides throughput up to 40 Gbps, uses the same

Re: Storage.

2016-10-28 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi Tony

I'm not familiar with PS Elements...
But if you look at all the Preferences options, one of these should tell
you where the photos are stored...

The alternative is to google something like
"Photoshop Elements file locations OSX"

Hope this helps

find out where that folder is, then delete the files manually.

Using the preferences for the import app you use should tell you where.

New Macbook Pros?

2016-10-28 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi everyone

I've just been looking at the new Macbook Pro. It looks pretty cool, but
what about the price?

The top of range machine costs A$4,249.00 for 512Gb storage. I've got
400Gb of photos!

And then they want A$1,920.00 to upgrade to a 2TB SSD drive...

This is up to the price level that the first Mac IIs were in the late
1980s...

And then there's nothing in the box to connect my existing devices to.
I've got to buy all sorts of adaptors (from $30 to $110) to keep working...

Are Apple going to price themselves out of the market?

Do I have to carry around al sorts of cables and 3rd party devices to
use my computer as I move around?

Any ideas about how to resolve the issue?

Rob

Re: iphone/ipad backups

2016-10-13 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi
It is possible that this issue is caused by a newer version of iOS not
working with an older version of OSX. My wife had this message last
week. I looked into it and came up with this site:

http://www.mac-forums.com/iphone-hardware-and-accessories/328322-sync-issues-itunes-11-4-ios-9-0-1-osx-10-6-8-a.html

Sync issues itunes 11.4 IOS 9.0.1 OSX 10.6.8
Last year, A version of iTunes 11.4 was available for people who were
unable to sync their music when a certain update in IOS 8 was issued.
It worked and all was good. I purposely did not update my iPhone to
9.0 when it came out, because i figured I would run into the same
issue. I DID update to 9.0.1 the other day, and sure enough, my iTunes
version 11.4 won't sync to my iPhone w/ IOS 9.0.1.

There doesn't seem to be an easy workaround.

Gary, are you running an old version of OSX - e.g. 10.6.8?

1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home Button at the
same time for at least 10 seconds.
2. Ignore the Red Slider that appears on the screen and keep holding
both buttons until the Apple Logo appears.

Release the buttons, the iPhone will restart.

You might need to Reboot both iPhone and your computer.
Somewhere between the phone and the computer something in the
software is frozen and not allowing the connection.

If still having the problem:
Check your USB connections - use the cable that came with your
iPhone, switch to another USB port on your computer.

If still having the problem - Is this a jailbreak iPhone?

Re: Recording Skype conference calls

2015-12-23 Thread Rob Phillips
A technique I have used with webconferencing software is to record the
minutes on the fly, while sharing the screen with everyone. This way,
everyone sees the minutes as they are being written and can point out
inaccuracies in the moment. The other advantage is that the minutes are
available almost as soon as the meeting is over.

Of course, this means that the software you use has to have screen
sharing capability, and Skype probably doesn't have this. How about
Google Hangouts?

Cheers
Rob

New Macbook

2015-10-21 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi everyone

I'm a little bit confused/annoyed.

I bought my 15" Macbook pro (2.6 GHz I7 4 core, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) late
in 2012.

Since my 3 year Applecare is running out, and the machine is slowing
down, I'm looking at 'upgrading' to a new laptop.

I went in to Macworx today to see what was available. The top end
machine available was a 15" 3.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM and
512GB 'storage'.

Most of the tech specs seem hardly changed - what happened to Moore's
Law? The price doesn't seem to have changed much either - if anything it
has gone up. What is even more disturbing is that the storage has
decreased from 1Tb to 512Gb - in the top-end machine! Are they serious???

My current system uses 650Gb - 350 Gb in photos. I can't upgrade without
splitting up photo libraries or deleting old photos. This is 1990s
thinking, and the Apple hardware is forcing me backwards. In almost 30
years of Mac use, I can't recall storage capacity going down.

What are my options for a portable machine which exceeds to capability
of my current machine? A few years ago I heard that it is possible to
install OSX on non Mac hardware. Is this still an option?

Hoping for some creative solutions...
Rob

Re: How to convert a POP email account to IMAP

2015-10-14 Thread Rob Phillips
I guess this should all work, as long as you don't get one of your POP
accounts to delete messages from the server when you download it.

Hi Pete, Hi Daniel,

I've been following this thread with some interest. If I understand the
thread, the decision as to whether an account is IMAP or POP should be set
at the hosting server and then the account in the email program has to be
set to match (ie use the same protocol).

Georgie & I have our own domains and generally use email accounts we have
set-up on those. We have VERY limited email storage associated with these
accounts and so we use POP and download everything from the server. No
problems here except that there is also limited bandwidth and so
occasionally we can hit the bandwidth limit. At some stage I will upgrade
the hosting package which will address the storage/bandwidth limitations.

Our broadband provider (Internode) also provides email and so I set-up an
internode email address for each of us - more as a back-up, we don't really
use them as they would disappear if we changed Broadband providers.

I set these up several years ago, so I don't really remember the steps
involved - but I can see that the email accounts on the computer are set as
POP accounts and everything works fine (test emails to and from both mine &
Georgies accounts.

Now, here's where it gets confusing

Recently Georgie was getting (and due to get) quite a lot of emails with
large phoo files attached - so I suggested she use her internode email
address to avoid running into bandwidth/storage limitations on her personal
email accounts. She had forgotten that she had this account and it was only
configured on the computers so she asked me to set-up the account on her
iPhone - which I did - only to find that mail on IOS automatically set up an
IMAP account!

So now it seems that there is an IMAP account on the iPhone and POP accounts
on several computers all connecting to the same basic Internode email
account. All seem to work well and send and receive email OK.

The IMAP account leaves messages on the server (as you would expect). The
POP accounts on the secondary computers also leave messages on the server
(as they have been set to do) and the POP account on her main computer
downloads messages from the server (as it has been set to do).

I currently have 15 email accounts set-up in my email client on my computer
and ALL are POP - so I would prefer to just keep everything the same.
However Mail on IOS on the iPhones just automatically sets the internode
accounts to IMAP and does not let me select POP.

So I seem to have a hybrid IMAP/POP set-up - which just seems wrong!
However, it all seems to work OK!

Any comments? Am I likely to run into any problems with this set-up?

Cheers

Neil

This is an interesting discussion, and it resonates with the way I have

I agree with Bill

"I want stuff that works when I need it."

Over recent years, I've become increasingly dissatisfied with Apple Mac
products, because they continue to remove functionality that I have been
used to using efficiently. I'm a 'messy' user, and I like to have
multiple windows open at once. Recent OS upgrades have made it harder
for me to do this. Unless I hide the Finder Toolbar, I can't open
Folders in a new window without right-clicking. It took me months to
find out about this by trial and error. Apple should have told me!
Previously, I had a preference about how this behaved.

In other words, I'm getting sick of Apple telling me how I should use my
computer, and removing my options for doing things differently. E.g.
taking away scroll bars because you can swipe on iphones.

Forcing me to move to Photos, with reduced functionality, was another
example which I didn't ask for. I didn't even know I would lose many of
my smart albums until AFTER I upgraded.

It seems like Apple has a philosophy that everyone is a new user, and
doesn't recognise long-term users.

I'm seriously considering other options, but I guess a Linux variety is
the only option, and this will take an extended learning curve.

One day I'll reach a tipping point, but, in the meantime, I can hope
that Apple will stop trying to control my behaviour.

what exactly some users are looking for with regards to the OS. Is it the

For those who want basic application softwares they are available, albeit for a
price (most are quite cheap). Some of the applications I use are fairly basic
e.g. for my photos I use Graphic Converter because I have problems in
constantly having my Photos, ex iPhotos, libraries converted etc. Although I
have MS Office, most of my word processing is done with Mellel, a powerful

With regards to the operating system itself, unfortunately the computing world
is constantly evolving and what with the hotly contested competition from
Windows and Android, if Apple does not keep up with the latest technologies it
will loose ground very quickly. A good analogy is the car industry. A current
car manufacturer who dares produce a car without electric windows and/or an
electric starter motor, side valves operated by push rods etc would not survive
the highly competitive modern car market. The current consumers, in the

Although the above analogy is simplistic, this is the argument I use to
convince myself to install the latest OS on my Macs. The latest technology
provides greater efficiency, uses the latest technology, which once learned,
will make my life much easier. And above all the updates allow me to surf the
net which itself keeps evolving using new technology. Many ‘old’ browsers would
not be able to cope with all that latest internet technology.

I agree that it is difficult to keep learning the new OS, but at least we Mac
users have not had to suffer the pains our brothers from that ‘other’ OS have
go through with each major update. Having used Apple products since the IIc
came out I am surprised at how consistent the OS has been, from the user’s end.
But I have to add that I am not a heavy user and admit that I possibly use only
2% or so of the OS available functions.

Hi Pete

Daniel's suggestion is the best way to go.

However, note that I suggested (perhaps not very clearly) that you
recreate your old email 'account' in mail. The important thing to
recognise is that your email account with Westnet still exists. It's
just that the connection to that account in the Mail email browser is
being changed. Unfortunately, Mail calls this an 'account', so it gets
confusing.

Good luck

If you’ve been using a POP account, but have grown frustrated with inaccessible
messages, you can usually convert your account to IMAP. Most hosting companies
and providers offer both options. However, making this conversion requires that
you take precautions so you don’t lose any messages. Here’s how to make the
switch safely:

1. Check with your email host

If you manage your email account yourself, check on your hosting company’s
dashboard to make sure you can use IMAP. (It’s very rare that this is not
available.) If you get email through your business or school, check with the IT
department. Find out what settings you will need to access your email as an
IMAP account, and whether anything needs to be changed on the server side. If
you use Gmail, this help page will tell you how to change your Gmail account
from POP to IMAP. (You have to enable IMAP on the Gmail website.)

2. Protect the message you’ve already downloaded

To avoid any potential disasters, save all the messages you have on your Mac to
a different mailbox before you convert to IMAP.

IMAP stores some or all of your email on the mail server. The problem is, this
means that any folders that are on your Mac may get overwritten, or deleted, if
you don’t save their messages before making the switch. So, in Mail, choose
Mailbox -> New Mailbox, and, with the location as On My Mac, create a new
mailbox. Call it something like My Old Inbox. When you’ve done this, move all
the messages currently in your Inbox to this folder. Do the same for your Sent
Mail folder, and any Drafts you may have. Once this is done, you can change the
settings for your email account.

3. Find your IMAP settings

Either your hosting company, your IT department, or your email provider will
provide the settings you need to switch your account over to IMAP. For example,
for Gmail, you will need to know the new Incoming Mail Server (imap.gmail.com
),
but your outgoing mail server won’t change. In most cases, you will just need
to change the prefix in the Incoming Mail Server setting from pop to imap.
Write these down. You'll need them in Step 5.

4. Disable your POP account

In Mail, choose Preferences -> Accounts, click on the name of your POP account,
then on Advanced, then uncheck Enable this account.

5. Create a new IMAP email account

In Mail, you can’t change an email account from POP to IMAP. Instead, you need

Hello Graham,

Have you tried 'refreshing' the Finder .plist?

1. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder.
2. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder-View-Show
View options or go command - J.
3. When the View options opens, check ?Show Library Folder?.
That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.
4. Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.
Move the com.apple.finder.plist to your desktop.
5. Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test.

If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer
ones.

Note: "You might need to redo the View settings" after.
For example:
If experience the hard drive icon not showing on the desktop after refreshing
the plist,
Go to Finder > Preferences and under "Show these items on the desktop" check the box next
to "Hard disks" and the icon will reappear.

It could be that your hard disk is corrupt and some sectors aren't
available for use. This means running Disk Utility to verify and/or

You will probably need to boot up in 'diagnostic mode' to do this. Hold
down 'd' when restarting and then choose Disk Utility from the menu at

“failed”. The account name is “iinet.net.au <http://iinet.net.au>” On
my Macbook Air (where there is no delay when sending emails) the SMTP
account shows that the connection succeeded. That account name
is “mail.iinet.au:gr…”

Changing the account name on the iMac to that of the MBAir will
probably solve the problem, but how can I find out what the full name
of the account is on the MB Air and change it on the iMac to that name?

Thanks Ronni.

Cheers,

Graham

Off-topic: museum/ collectors for old electronic devices

2015-08-06 Thread Rob Phillips
Sorry this is off topic, but there seem to be some people on this list
who collect old electronic stuff.

We've just replaced our old, 1980s Toshiba microwave. It's in good
working order, and it seems a shame to just throw it away.

Does anyone know anybody who collects this sort of stuff, or is there a
museum?

Please reply to me directly, so it doesn't clog the list.

Cheers

Re: VPN

2015-07-30 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi Peter,
I don't currently use a VPN on my home network. I am considering it.

My son, who has been living in China, has had to use a VPN service to
circumvent the Chinese government's blocking of particular sites (like
Facebook), and potential eavesdropping on his traffic.

With the Federal Government's new data retention laws, we are all at
risk of the same treatment from the Australian government. If you don't
want people prying into what you do on the internet, you should be using
a VPN.

My son recommends a VPN provider called Astrill
(https://www.astrill.com/what-is-vpn.php).

This is a paid service. Others may know of free services, but I haven't
looked into it yet.

Hope this helps.

Your comment that you use a VPN when connecting to a Public Wireless Network,

I value your input on these matters.

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a special type of network connection that
encrypts all Internet traffic flowing between your device and
a VPN server somewhere on the Internet. Think of a VPN as a tunnel running
through your physical (Wi-Fi, cellular, or wired) Internet connection that’s
impenetrable from the outside but open on both ends. Since VPNs can encrypt
everything, they even make it safe to use an unencrypted Wi-Fi connection.

Re: Traveling with Apple products (Europe) info

2014-05-24 Thread Rob Phillips

Replying to a thread from a year ago

We're going to Europe in a couple of days, but my spies over there tell
me that mobile roaming services will be required to provide a
Europe-wide tariff from the end of 2015. In other words, no matter where
you buy your European SIM, you'll get the same price in every country...

Rob

On 15/05/2013 3:47 pm, Peter Faulks wrote:

Using a Mac in Europe

Just a follow up to Peter's traveling question, I
though this might broaden the scope of answers.

We are currently traveling around Europe with a
Mac Book Pro lap top, iPad 4 and iPhone 4. I
purchased an international power adapter and set
up a two pin plug to Aussie line socket top,
which I plug into an Aussie small 4 way power
board. I can then plug in all our Australian
plugs and keep items charged up and working. I
also purchased an iPad car adapter and universal
car adapter to use ipad and other devices in our
hire car.

England
In England we found hotels charged about .50p per
minute Internet and we were in England for four
weeks so I purchased a 3G Wi Fi Huawei E5331 for
£39 plus one months service (2gb download) £30
from Three UK, (this allows 10 connected devices)
however the device is locked to the UK and could
only be topped up at the Three store because you
need a UK address to purchase this device and a
passport to obtain a Sim Card.

Worse they will not accept Internet top up unless
you have a UK post code and UK Credit Card, so we
found this quite inconvenient having to find a 3
store to purchase a top up voucher. However the
device worked brilliantly with the iPad as a GPS
using Maps but once we left England we obviously
lost Internet connection.

Italy
We traveled to Italy where I purchased a Wind ZTE
MF63 Wi Fi for 69 Euro, (allows 5 connected
devices) our hotels were charging .65c US$ per
minute for very slow connections, (double rip
off, high cost and slow to gather emails etc.),
this included 5 Euro and two weeks service and
worked fine in Italy (12 days). Although the
salesman advised that this device was unblocked
it proved later not to be the case.

Spain
When we arrived in Spain, I purchased a Wi-Fi sim
from Vodaphone, (20Euro) but this would not
connect through either Huawei (UK) or ZTE MF63
(Italy) devices, so I purchased another Huawei
E5331 Wi Fi from Orange for 39Euro plus one
months service 2Gb for 40Euro. This works fine in
Spain but again will be blocked for other
countries.

For the Phone we purchased 3G sim cards in
England which only worked in England unless you
pay 28p per minute for Roaming, but we later
found a world sim card in Spain for 20 Euro that
works in 10 countries (Lebara movil World Card).
A better alternative would have been purchase a
cheap UK phone these work throughout Europe, and
can be puchased for abouth £30.

I did try to organize something in Perth before
leaving but no one seemed to know what was best,
our service provider thought roaming on our phone
over 7 weeks would be excessive.

Sorry for the ramble but I just though I would
pass this on to future travelers. If anyone has
better methodology I would be pleased to hear it
because we are still in Europe.

There are some places where free Wi-Fi is
available but we needed to carry on working
whilst traveling and to keep in touch with family
and for Internet searches for hotels and venues.
Plus the GPS for driving.

Replacement laptop keys

I found a website however that specialises in replacement keys, believe

Re: Travelling to south of France

2014-04-03 Thread Rob Phillips

Interesting discussion.

Can I confirm, Peter, that the SIM card you purchased worked at the same
rates across countries. It used to be that you had to pay roaming costs
if you went outside the country where you bought this. I had heard that
this was going to change to a European-wide solution, but I'd like
confirmation.

Can you explain the difference between the Huawei and Lebara. I'm not
completely sure what these are... :-\

Re: Travelling to south of France

Hello Jon,

We found the best option is to purchase a wifi device in France with
a monthly pay as you go sim card, this will give you complete control
over your wifi needs and it will seamlessly connect to you ipad or iphone.

We travelled through Europe last year UK, France, Italy, Spain and for
the cost (about $40-$50) we had wifi everywhere for about 8 weeks. I
purchases a Huawei MiFi (E5331) - £29 in UK (2gb) then got it unlocked
for use everywhere and it worked great with ipad (maps) and our
iphone. In France Orange, 3G etc all have shops selling wifi devices.

We did purchase a Lebara international Sim card but hotspotting this
to the ipad we estimated costs would be high for wifi so we just used
Huawei and Lebara for making phone calls, we simply phoned all our
relatives and friend and then they had our new international number.
Our friends purchased a cheap phone whilst overseas and that worked OK
but only in the country of purchase.

Hope this helps

Have a great holliday

Hi everyone. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but as
technology changes so quickly I wonder if is any easier now.

I am going to south of France for a month from next Monday, and wish
to use my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro.
I'll be staying pretty much in one place that has no WiFi, so am just
wondering what the best thing to do is:
Do I buy a sim card over there? or sign up with the local telecom for
a service over there?
Or does Telstra offer any help with this? I'll probably have to
use my HotSpot on my phone for WiFi access?

Any help from anyone who has recently done a similar thing would be
gratefully received.

Kind regards
Jon

OK. It's all under the View menu. Yours certainly looks strange

I recreated your symptoms, then I had to spend a while getting back to

In the View/Layout sub-menu, you need to have Folder Pane and Message

This will get you back to a normal looking mailbox view. You can then
play around with the other View/ Layout options...

Re: emails: unwanted deletion

2014-02-19 Thread Rob Phillips

If it's POP mail then the message gets downloaded directly to your computer.

So if the emails appear on the laptop, and then disappear, then I don't
think this can be a server problem.

I'm not familiar with how Mail works. If it uses a file system, then
disappearing messages implies a flaky hard disk.

If it uses a database, disappearing messages implies a flaky database -
which /may/ be related to a flaky hard disk.

I'd be running disk utility and a hardware test. Boot up with the d key
pressed - I hope I remembered this correctly!

Can you google 'repair mail mailbox' or similar?

Hope this gets you started.

Re: map app

2014-02-01 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi Tim

I wasn't clear. I didn't want a turn by turn solution as I was
following the old telegraph line from Cocklebiddy to Israelite Bay! :-)

But I did want to know if the next turn off on the map was 200m away or
2km! A direct distance mechanism would be great, or even an indication
of map scale at the given zoom level, like WikiCamps does. Memory Map
doesn't seem to be doing this.

And yes - the QPA maps are good, except for the odd inaccuracy.

should tell you, somewhere, how far it is. But it will alwAys be
direct point to point, and not follow the road, track etc

If you want this feature then you need a turn by turn mapping app such
as Sygic, tomtom, etc. these are generally setup for city and major
routes, not navigating tracks off road

I found Sygic works on the iPad without 3G connection, if I recall,
but nice features like search, what's around, etc need the internet to
work.

ExplorOz is a good site for keeping up with what's around for remote
travel, including mapping, but I've not yet seen a 'perfect Mac
supported system' that suits iPad users, which there are many. We all
want it cheap too!

Hema make good maps with plenty of extra details. I always carry the
good spiral bound 'Roads and TrAcks Western Australia' by QPA as it
has 250k and 500k mapping, in conjunction with the electronic mapping.
The latter shows me where I am, the former provides the bigger picture
of where I am going.

Re: A MS Word puzzle

2013-12-23 Thread Rob Phillips
Well done Daniel. This is a good suggestion to a problem that was
puzzling me. I couldn't think of a sensible answer, but if Sev's system
uses (or replaces) a document font which doesn't have a printable
version, then this could be the solution.

If Daniel's idea is correct, I would suspect that the section of the
table which prints properly will use a different font than that which
doesn't.

Let me emphasise the problem again.
 1. The document basically a table (Word .doc from 93 PC version)
opens and displays correctly in my MS Office 2011, Word 14.3.9
 2. When I print, on any of three printers, a few values, which
are calculated within Word are incorrect, some are unaffected. Non
calculated values are fine.
 3. When I save as PDF from the print dialog corruption occurs as
in printing

 4. If I open the document in Acrobat 11, the same corruption occurs
 5. Text Edit can not open the document sensibly
 6. Preview opens and prints correctly, though the setting out is
disturbed
 7. If I save from Word as .rtf, then open and print from Text
Edit, the numbers are fine but once again the setting out is
disturbed.

All in all, most annoying!

A few ideas:

1. What happens if you open the file in something else that will
read .doc files, eg, TextEdit or Open Office or any of its clones
(NeoOffice, etc - assuming have any of the latter)?

2. Do you know the syntax of the calculations? Could you re-enter
them into your onscreen document? A bit of a nuisance but it might
work.

3. I'm also wondering if there isn't some reliance on a macro set
up which isn't available to you

Sorry I can't of more help. It does seem likely that there may be
some internal structural problems with the file.

Digital video/ quicktime question

2013-12-04 Thread Rob Phillips
Hi people

Is there anyone out there who knows about interactive digital video?

I recall from a decade ago that it was possible to create a 'title
track' on a Quicktime video. This was like a table of contents that you
could click onto go directly to the relevant frame. The video would be
embedded in a web page.

Is this still a quicktime feature? Can you do this with other video
formats?

Cheers

Re: Mavericks - Unhide the User Library Folder

Hi Mavericks "adoptees",

Mavericks hides the user Library folder ( ~/Library) by default, just
as Lion and Mountain Lion do.
You can open it easily enough by holding down *Option *while choosing
Library from the Finder's*Go* menu, or you can use*Terminal.app
*and**type the command "chflags nohidden ~/Library" (without the
quotes) and hit*Enter* and your User Library shows in Finder.

Mavericks introduces an easier way to make the user Library folder
visible all the time---no more fiddling in Terminal.
All you need to do is* open your Home Folder in its own window*,
choose*View > Show View Options*, and select the "*Show Library
Folder" *checkbox.

I would imagine Mavericks will behave the same way Mountain Lion &
Lion do; so ever time an update appears (10.9.1 or 10.9.2), the User
Library will be re-hidden and you'll have to repeat this procedure...
but it will be much quicker than having to go into Terminal every time
after each update to the OS to have ~/Library folder visible all the time.

Re: iPad with Internet ?

2013-10-27 Thread Rob Phillips
Just beware.

I used a 12 month prepaid card in a 4G modem in my camper van on a
recent trip. I ran the ipad, iphone and 2 macbooks of the wireless
network generated by the modem.

I was chewing through the quite limited download quota very quickly and
it was costing a fortune. I had to carefully look at all the services
running on the ipad and iphone. I recall that iCloud and Dropbox were
the culprits, but there might have been others.

So, check things out carefully when you first get the prepaid SIM.

Re: Restoring my iPhoto Library

2013-08-06 Thread Rob Phillips
ave not backed up iPhoto.

The upshot is that right now I can't access anything from May onwards except
for some shots saved onto iCloud. Of course I expected that all my shots from
May onwards would be on iCloud. There are 117 photos on iCloud from my
expected about 1800. They are parts of events starting from the beginning of
the Kimberley cruise and coming up to material from last Saturday week. I'm
glad to have the 117, but what about the rest?

I have just repaired my Database, but it didn't find any more shots.

I have checked AppleTV. It has helpfully selected about 20 shots of the 500 I
Shared and plays them when the main screen goes off. They are a good set. I
would like to get them back, but I can't see any way to do that.

Ronni, I hope you have some magic commands to find the shots which went
missing, apparently this morning or perhaps earlier. Perhaps they were
deleted. Is it possible to recover from iPhoto Trash?

Laptops and tea

2013-05-05 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi people

This is one for the hardware people...

We're 6 weeks into a camping trip around Australia and we've run into a
little problem. I was working on my new Macbook Pro when a strong gust
of wind pushed the awning against my tea cup, which then partly spilt
over the laptop keyboard. It was black tea with sugar. I immediately
tipped the laptop over to get the liquid off.

Since then, the keyboard keys have been a bit sticky, but work OK.
However, the lightning? port which I use to connect to data projectors
has been flaky and hardly ever works. I took the machine into a Mac shop
in Launceston and the guy confirmed the problem with the lightning port,
but noted the sticky keyboard.

He said the motherboard would slowly fail through corrosion and I should
contact my insurers.

My questions are:

 * Is the guy right?
 * Is there a protective cover under the keyboard?
 * What is the cost of a replacement motherboard?

MacBook Pro
15-inch, Mid 2012
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 384 MB

Cheers
Rob

Re: Wi Fi provider in Europe

2013-02-24 Thread Rob Phillips
Yeah. Reinforcing Tim's comments. You'll probably need an address in
the country you're going to.

When I was in Europe last year, there was talk of the EU requiring
carriers not to price gouge on cross-country roaming rates. It would be
worth checking that out, because I don't know when it comes into force.

Cheers

More: clock keeps stopping

2013-01-13 Thread Rob Phillips
Looks like it might have been istat menus.

There was a recent update which:

Fixed an issue where items wouldn’t update.
Fixed an issue where where the world clocks list didn’t display correctly.

I've installed it. I'll report if the problem recurs.

Re: My clock keeps stopping

2013-01-13 Thread Rob Phillips
Hi Ronni, others

I delayed responding until I had more evidence.

Quitting SystemUIServer does work - for a while. Rebooting does work -
for a while, then the clock stops again.

Resetting the NVRAM/ PRAM does work - for a while. In other words, there
is still a problem.

The symptom/*may* /have arisen after I updated iStatMenus recently.

Any other bright ideas? :-\

My clock keeps stopping

2013-01-09 Thread Rob Phillips
Hi people

This is a strange one. For the last two days, the system clock which
shows in my menubar has been stopping.

I have Date and Time Preferences set to 'set date and time
automatically' (but this probably isn't relevant). The symptoms are that
the menu clock doesn't increment as the minutes go by. If I go to Date
and Time Preferences, then the time updates again sometimes. The correct
date and time is displayed in Date and Time Preferences, but not on the
menu bar.

I've rebooted, and it worked for an hour, then stopped again. Has anyone
experienced this?

Re: dropbox

2013-01-02 Thread Rob Phillips
Hi everyone

Dropbox is great for sharing things. I use it as a collaborative file
share with others. However, there are 2 'gotchas'.

 1. Just because I have 10Gb space doesn't mean other users can access
all of this. A normal user still only has 2Gb. The folder for each
group you share with should remain at 2Gb, otherwise others can't
access all of it
 2. If user A drags a file out of a dropbox folder, other users have
lost access to this file. Be sure to option-drag any file forom a
dropbox folder to another location. (you can recover such 'deleted'
files thru the web interface.

Cheers
Rob
