If it’s similar to one I had before, it’s something to do at Gmail end. You have to log in your Gmail account on the computer and “approve it” for it to work. Re: Transfer books PDFs to new iPad
Further to my post, after much experimenting I have managed to transfer the PDFs to the iMac. However I cannot yet get them from the iMac to the new iPad either via the Cloud or USB cable. It seems that if the PDFs were not ex iTunes purchases they are not included in a backup or Sync. I wish I had a USB socket in the iPad. Re: Transfer books PDFs to new iPad
Hi, John, Have you considered using an app? I find that File Browser (for iPad and iPhone) is very quick to connect and easy to transfer files to and from a computer by WiFi. It costs $7.49 from the app store. I have never had a problem transferring PDFs with it. Re: Transfer books PDFs to new iPad
Hi John, Sync ePub Books between iBooks on Mac and iPad Drag and Drop an eBook (that you haven't purchased in the iBooks store) from finder into iBooks on your Mac 1. Open up iTunes and connect your iPhone or iPad - you should now see the books tab again next to apps, music etc... In the books section, choose sync books and all books Press the Sync button (lower right corner) - your iBooks on the Mac should now be copied over to your iDevice and vice versa - all the stuff that was on your iPad before should now also show up in iBooks on your Mac (including PDFs ) This will at least keep your library synced on all devices. This page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059 Wirelessly sync your Bookmarks, Highlights, and Notes with your other devices using your iTunes Store account by tapping Settings iBooks Sync Bookmarks ON. —— Sync Books to iPad or iPhone 1. Connect iPad or iPhone to Mac 2. Open iTunes 3. Click iPad or iPhone (Books will then appear) 4. Click Books 5. Top left where it says Sync Books - (instead of choosing 'All Books') choose 'Selected Books' 6. Tick all the books you want on iPad/iPhone (or select ‘All Books’ if you want to sync all books) 7. Click Sync button Cheers, Ronni On 3 Jun 2015, at 12:23 pm, John Daniels john...@me.com wrote: Further to my post, after much experimenting I have managed to transfer the PDFs to the iMac. Apart from what is the latest, I would advise an iPad mini. The convenience of size to slip into a handbag is a huge plus and it is fully functional compared with the full size iPad. I speak from experience having purchased our mini for strip to Tasmania last year. I have I microsim paid on a pay as you go - no contract needed and it talks to 4G. Re: WTB New iPad
Hi Susan. I have bought the TomTom app for Australia ($75) and also USA/Canada ($75) for use on the iPhone (there is also the TomTom Western Europe app (covers UK) I can see for $60 today). While having a SIM provides additional location information for navigating, the iPhone GPS alone will still locate you and permit navigation on the preloaded maps contained in the app. Certainly the iPad screen size would be better and having a SIM would be essential (as no gps). Not sure if you have an iPhone but if you do, then going the TomTom route allows the driver to windscreen mount the iPhone, turned horizontal makes a great navigation unit as opposed to buying an additional bespoke 'Garmin like' device. Must be sure to connect power as pretty battery hungry. If you do buy the TomTom apps, then you buy once and can get on both iPhone and iPad assuming the same AppleID. Just an alternative there for you or even additional to your proposed navigation solution. Hi, yes, I have the tom tom app for australia, and bought other mapping apps when we were in the Uk and Europe a couple of years ago. Mostly my husband drives and I navigate. I wear glasses and really appreciate the larger screen. Using GPS apps rather than google or apple maps does mean not needing the local SIM card, but price wise for a month of access I would think that the SIM card is cheaper than buying the mapping apps, which are quite pricey. But, if you are driving and navigating by voice the iPhone works just as well, I agree. If you have a sim enabled ipad there is built in GPS I believe. Cheers, Susan. Re: WTB New iPad
There are also free GPS map apps eg: http://www.macworld.com.au/app-guide/navfree-for-ipad-and-iphone-65804/ I had not found these (or bought an iPad) when we last did an overseas trip - so I don't know how well the UK one works - but I have since downloaded the Oz UK ones onto the iPad and the Oz one seems to work well. One thing to be aware of - each upgrade must involve the whole app (with maps) so is several hundred MB - so best not to do this on your paid mobile data allowance ;o) - on the other hand, I assume this means regular map updates. I haven't tried it on the phone. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Yes Susan, Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad has a built-in GPS receiver. And the GPS is completely separate from the 3G/4G service, so you don’t even have to have an active data plan for the GPS to work. You could buy a 3G/4G model iPad, never activate a Cellular service, and still have GPS data. (WiFi only iPads do not have a GPS). Apple doesnt integrate GPS on the Wi-Fi only models, but you can still locate yourself and use Location Services only if you are connected through Wi-Fi. The cellular + Wi-Fi models are more precise on GPS as they use cellular signals to pinpoint accuracy of your location. Re: difference in ipad2 and new ipad
Hi, there doesn't seem to be a big difference between the ipad2 and iPad third generation. 4g on the iPad is not available in Australia yet even though the third generation got it in the USA. But, who knows about the iPad 4? That may be when we get 4g here in australia. haven't seen a rumor about the ipad 4, but have seen enough on the iPad mini to convince me it's coming, I thought in October, with the iPhone 5 to be announced in September. Reading all of these rumors can 'do your head in'. I suppose if you were deciding between 2 and 3 I'd get the later version because it will be longer before you want to upgrade. Re: difference in ipad2 and new ipad
Hi Susan, Even though Telstra's 4G frequency is not available on the iPad, nevertheless as near I can make it the new iPad frequencies of 850MHz and 2100MHz still offer some speed improvements in Australia. The give the user access to a HPSA+ which, while technically not 4G, it is much faster than 3G. Here is a quote from an article on the subject in the Australian But the news isn’t all bad for iPad users needing mobile network connectivity. The inclusion of High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) plus 850MHz and 2100MHz means the new iPads in theory are capable of much faster download speeds on Telstra’s NextG network, and Optus and Vodafone networks and here is a link to the article: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/australian-it/opinion/apples-new-ipad-4g-a-no-go-on-telstras-mobile-network/story-e6frgb0o-1226293057168 Regards, Carlo --- Carlo Margio Real World Computing mob: +61 404 296 965 i...@realworldcomputing.com.au www.realworldcomputing.com.au On 06/09/2012, at 5:12 PM, Susan Hastings susanhasti...@mac.com wrote: Hi, there doesn't seem to be a big difference between the ipad2 and iPad third generation. 4g on the iPad is not available in Australia yet even though the third generation got it in the USA. Apple doesn't think many people will take advantage of the offer to return the tablet, since, as Apple's senior council Paul Anastassiou, told the court: Ultimately at trial, it will be contested by Apple there are in Australia networks that according to international definitions are 4G, are properly described as 4G. Re: The new iPad does work on 4G at 4G speeds in Australia
What the tech at Telstra couldn't sell you was a 4G LTE contract. However, what you do have is a sim that gets you on the 4G HSPA+ dual carrier network instead. The tech may have called it a 3G sim, but the ITU classifies it as 4G as well. As you say, it is pretty damn fast. Considering my home ADSL connection tops out at 2-3mbps, getting up to 42mbps on HSPA+ dual carrier on the iPad (so far up to 20mbps real-world speeds) on Telstra's NextG network is pretty astonishing when you think about it. -Mart On 28/03/2012, at 7:19 AM, Susan Hastings susanhasti...@mac.com wrote: Hi Martin, I'm using a 3G sim in a third generation iPad. Only LTE Advanced theoretically offers greater than 100mbps. H. It's kind of everyone splitting hairs. You can call Vivid 4G but it's not great coverage and not great speeds and note really what you expect of 4G. At the end of the day the iPad doesn't support 4G LTE and it will be either the next model(s) or we wait until 2015 when 700MHz becomes available. I don't think that Apple were misleading. It's not too different from the iPhone where we have 3G networks across the country on different frequencies. We couldn't use an iPhone on Optus or Vodafone 3G in Albany until the iPhone 4 because they used a different frequency. I don't know why Apple branded the models that way. Maybe could have just had iPad Wifi and iPad Wifi/Mobile (obviously their marketing dudes would come up with something sexier!). Great publicity though huh? Apple willing to issue refunds to iPad buyers in Australia: /Quote: Offer comes after consumer commission finds Apple misled buyers by labeling the device as 4G-capable when it actually operates at a different frequency.” Apple is reportedly willing to offer refunds to iPad buyers in Australia who feel they were misled to believe the new tabletis capable of connecting to the 4G/LTE network Down Under. Apple senior counsel Paul Anastassiou told the Federal Court in Melbourne today that the company was prepared to offer refunds even though it had -- he said -- never claimed the new tablet would work fully on the 4G network in Australia operated by Telestra, according to variouspublished reports. Apple also proposed publishing a clarification regarding incompatibility issues on its Web site and at its stores. The revelation comes a day after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found Apple in violation of the Australian Consumer Law by misleadingly labeling its new iPad as 4G-capable and said it would try to get a court to impose fines and an injunction against sales. /End Quote Full article can be read here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57405581-37/apple-willing-to-issue-refunds-to-ipad-buyers-in-australia/?tag=mncol;editorPicks TinyURL if above link does not work: http://tinyurl.com/6qbhq9b Cheers, Ronni On 28/03/2012, at 10:26 AM, stuart.ev...@t4.com.au wrote: H. Woke up at 2am accidentally, so here's the latest news. So the new iPad has an extremely high resolution Retina screen 2048x1536 or exactly twice the resolution (4x the number of pixels) as the iPad 2. 1 million more pixels than a Full HD TV. Not bad for 4G LTE (and newer faster HSDPA up to 42Mbps) A5x w quad core GPU chip 5 megapixel camera on back Auto focus Image stabilization 1080p video recording Slightly thicker (9.4mm vs 8.8mm) and little bit heavier than iPad 2 (in order to get same battery life despite 4G) Voice dictation (but no Siri) Same prices as iPad 2 Available March 16 Still has a physical Home button Minor upgrade to AppleTV - now supports 1080p and movies in iCloud New iWork apps new GarageBand and iMovie New iPhoto app ( supports sharing to Facebook) iPad 2 now available for $399 (16GB wifi) - whoa, that's going to hurt competitors It's just called the new iPad. They may be migrating to Macs style nomenclature. You just buy an iMac or a 15 MacBook Pro, or a MacBook Air, you don't specify a model number. So perhaps from here on in there are just iPads. iTunes folder permissions problem (was: I can't register my new iPad)
On 23/07/2011, at 12:19 PM, David Nicholas david...@iinet.net.au submitted I can't register my new iPad I have been assisting David by phone to analyse his problem with I can't register my new iPad, and now look for more experienced WAMUG help. I changed the thread subject line because there were no responses to the original posting and I thought the most significant problem lay with the second item David raised. All problems are still there! PART A:iTunes alert message stated by David after purchasing the iPad iBooks app: iTunes couldn't download your purchase. You don't have access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then choose Store Check for Available Downloads. Action taken: (1) Books and Apps were included in the iTunes Preferences to show in the Library. (2) Repair Disk Permissions run on the Macintosh HD via Disk Utility. (No problems indicated). (3) The iTunes Media folder (located under User/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media) and all enclosed items were given full R/W permissions privileges, even though all individual visible folders were already set OK. Noted that a folder called Downloads (empty) exists under iTunes Media. iMac restarted and iTunes reloaded etc: still get same Alert message when checking for available downloads. PART B: David had also attempted to purchase an iTunes music item and got a different Alert warning: We could not complete your iTunes Store request. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation. There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later. This alert message appears immediately iTunes is loaded. So it may refer to the act of loading the software, or to the unfinished sale of the unsuccessful music purchase. The iStore can be accessed and browsed without problems. It shows David as logged in and he can see his account status etc. Action taken: (1) Tried later and next day - no change. (2) Confirmed folder permissions for Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences were OK for David as admin. (3) Confirmed folder permissions for User / Library / Preferences were OK for David as admin. (4) Confirmed user security Firewall is off. I searched the Apple Support HT and TS files for permission issues but the specific Alerts received have no diagnostic advice. So, a lot of time invested for no clear result. Is it time for a .plist trashing? Or to re-install iTunes 10.4? (I can't give any advice about these!) By the way, David has an older iMac (OSX 10.5.8) on the same home network that has no problems with iTunes, purchases, etc. The new iPad can access iTunes Store (and download items) via WiFi with no problems. Therefore Apple ID, network and internet assumed to be OK. But the iMac-iTune problem is making the iPad sync process hairy. Re: iTunes folder permissions problem (was: I can't register my new iPad)
Hi Alan, You mentioned you have changed permissions on the Home Music iTunes Music Folder ALL enclosed folders. You need to check and see that you have both Read AND Write permission on the iTunes Music folder AND on all folders within it. Log in to the account where the library resides and navigate to the Music folder through Finder. The File Get Info and check your permissions. Unlock the little lock at the bottom of this window To change them, you need to input the Admin password. The click the 'little cog’ and “Apply to enclosed items”. As its very important, to make sure that Read and Write permission is applied to ALL enclosed folders. Failing this, does David have a backup of his iTunes Folder when it was all working correctly? Re: iTunes folder permissions problem (was: I can't register my new iPad)
Ronni Thanks for your response. With frequent consultations with Alan I have done the things you mention. I have a Shared Folder. Apple Support suggested I check permissions of the Shared Folder, but they are all OK. We decided to Deauthorise the Computer and then Reauthorise it, but it wouldnt let me. It gave a message There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required file was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deathorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed. That seemed to have circular advice in it, and didn't give me a clear path. Can you suggest anything further Ronni? Re: iTunes folder permissions problem (was: I can't register my new iPad)
Hi again Alan David, I’ve studied your email more thoroughly. Did this problem arise after a migration from an older Mac to a new Mac? Especially this message David received first. iTunes couldn't download your purchase. You don't have access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then choose Store Check for Available Downloads. Try doing removing the /Users/Shared/SC Info directory and restart. 1. In the top finder bar, go to GO Go to Folder (Shift+Cmd+G) 2. Type in “/Users/Shared/SC Info” 3. Click ‘Go’ 4. Switch to Column View if you’re not in it already 5. Delete the “SC Info” folder 6. Restart Or, if you’re OK in the terminal, type this in from the command line: rm /Users/Shared/SC\ Info And then restart. Let me know how you get on please. Re: iTunes folder permissions problem (was: I can't register my new iPad)
Hi Ronni David was rushing to go out so he may not have seen this message. Will do the suggested action tomorrow. Yes, David used Migration Assistant to transfer data from an older machine. Apple Support suggested checking permissions on the Shared folder, which David did (via FileGet Info, as Terminal is a bit of a challenge!) but David never mentioned the existence of a CS Info folder.I don't have one on my iMac (or it is hidden), so I didn't prompt David to inspect his folder. BTW, David doesn't think his Time Machine has a reliable backup of his iTunes library. Perhaps his iTunes problems have been around for along time - since Migration? Hi David, Your news is great! I’m pleased I was able to help you Alan solve the problem. I’m only sorry I missed your original post re this problem. I just scrolled back to find when it was posted as I didn’t see it. I was under personal pressure at that time as my only ‘Big Sis’ (we are known as The Glue Sisters”), was in ICU in Hospital in Melbourne and it was uncertain if she was going to make it. She has got through the emergency operation and the prognosis is looking much better than a few days ago. Ah, Beethoven … I love Beethoven, I love Mozart … I love classical music! I can't register my new iPad
For the past 12 hours I have been trying to register my new iPad. When I select Register Now it tells me the following Could not complete the iTunes Store request. The store may be busy. Check your Internet connection or try again later. I suppose it is possible the iTunes store is busy with people downloading Lion - but really - I have been trying this repeatedly over a long time. I have checked the Apple discussion forum and other people have the same problem with no suggested solutions offered. I have a second problem related to the iTunes App store from my iMac. I tried to download iBooks as an iPad App and got the following iTunes couldn't download your purchase You don't have access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then choose Store Check for Available Downloads. However when I check my Media folder I can't find any permissions which are not read and write. I tried to download a book from the iTunes store and got the same error message. Now comes the ridiculous situation. I have successfully downloaded the app and a book using my new iPad. Therefore my Apple ID connection is OK. Are there any suggestions? iMac OS X 10.6.8 iTunes 10.4 David Nicholas -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: New iPad
Hi Peta, A few of us will possibly be doing this in the near future ;-) How To Prepare For Your New iPad Getting a new computer or tablet or phone means that you will want to do a few things. The first thing will want to do is make sure all of your information is transferred from your old device to your new one and then you will most likely want to make sure the old device is cleared off in case you want to sell it for cash or give it to a family friend who has been hinting at needing one. Here is how to prepare for your new iPad. Step 1: Back Up Your Current iPad Ok. Before you go get in line for the new iPad (or click on the “buy” button) you should make sure everything is backed up. This way, when you do bring home that awesome new iPad, you are ready to go. Here is how to backup your current iPad. Make sure you sync with iTunes. This automatically creates a backup of your iPad settings, apps data, and other information. Backups DO NOT include synced items such as songs and videos from your iTunes library. Backups also do not include information such as contacts and calendar items from your computer. If you have information that you have added on your iPad since your last backup, then you will want to make sure you sync to iTunes and also make sure you have ticked the correct check boxes such as ‘Contacts’ and ‘Calendars’ in order to get that information on your computer and ready for syncing to your new iPad. Once you have done a sync and have verified that any changes to your iPad are on your computer (such as contacts) then you should be ready for your new device. Step 2: Clearing Out Your Old iPad You will want to clear out all of the information and apps from your current (old) iPad if you plan to either give it away or sell it. The best way to do that is to restore it back to the original settings and erase all your information is to do one of two things: Plug it into iTunes on your computer and tap on the iPad icon on the far left. Then tap on “Restore” on the Summary tab On the iPad, tap on Settings, then General, then Reset and choose to “Erase All Content….” Once you do one of these two steps, your old iPad is ready to sell or give away. Here’s an article to help you sell your old iPad for cash. Step 3: Sync Your New iPad You are now ready to sync your new iPad with iTunes. Just plug it in and it will begin the sync process. Don’t forget to make sure you have checked all of the boxes in iTunes so that it syncs your music, contacts, calendar, videos, apps, etc. If you wanted all your settings back and saved game data, etc. Then you can also restore your new iPad from a backup of your previous iPad. To restore from a backup, do the following: Connect your (new) iPad to the computer with the backup stored on it In iTunes, do a Control-click on the iPad icon in the sidebar and then choose “Restore from Backup” from the menu that appears Choose the backup that you want to restore from and then click “Restore” Now you are ready to use your new iPad with all your previous settings, apps, and information. Your old iPad should be ready for sale or to give away and you can now enjoy the new one. http://www.tcgeeks.com/transfer-your-old-ipad-information-to-your-new-ipad-in-3-steps/ Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 2.66GHz / 8GB / 1067 MHz DDR3 / 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) On 03/03/2011, at 4:47 PM, Laura Webb wrote: Hi Daniel Posting this to the list in case it may be of general interest.
