I suppose the reality is that while military spending is important,
education is more important. If not for education, we would not be able to
have negotiations, conversations, discussions.. we would rely on bombing
campaigns.. but then again, without education, how would the atomic and
nuclear weapons have been made /
Our system is not perfect, but I know that my children have the oppoortunity
to furhter their education, if they choose. And in reality that is where our
future lies

Thanks Maree,

I had hear in Aus, it is much easier to get an education, and wanted
everyone to know, so we could build consciousness of our education
choices, and improve the education decisions in places like the United
States where there is a huge gap between the poor and rich, and education
is so important to an individuals earning potential, and so costly! We
are far from assuring the equal opportunity that we think makes our
democracy so good.

If our countries made education the priority over military spending,
what kind of world do you think this would be?

In Aus, we have Higher Education Contributions (HECS), these range from
hundreds (TAFE - technichal and further education Colleges) up to about
$5000 p.a. for Engineering, medicine, law courses at uni. Not all are up
front, they are means teasted and you pay back when your income reaches a
certain level. Pay back through taxation (6%?).
And while, our taxation levels may be higher, all who want the opportunity
to furhter their education have access, and when they earn an income, they
pay back, Students are also entitled (means tested) to Austudy, similar to
unemployment benefits, but for full time students.

Interesting economic concept. Checking everything by the cost of a Big
Mac. I don't think we would find this in an economic book, but it is
practical.

I read, letters as we have today, may have resulted from common people
simplifying the more complex symbols used by the priest class. Maybe
again, the average people around the world will develop a system we can
all use and easily understand. Do you think Big Mac's could replace
gold? My friend who is into technocracy thinks instead of money, we
should working with KWT 's (unites of energy).

In Israel the annual cost (without books, rent and
other paraphernelia, photocopying, Internet, food and
other unnecessary things) is 10,000 NIS (which is
about US$2,500).

It may sound very cheap to you, but remember that we
have much lower wages and that we're first in the
world in the Economist "Big Mac rate" (basically, it
checks the price of Big Mac, which is sold all over
the world and supposed to be the same. It checks the
stadard of living vs. the money you have). In other
words it is more or less equivalent to $10,000.

I understood that had I studied in Europe, I would
have had to pay about 2,000 pounds. A bit more, but
not much more. And unlike the US, we rarely have
financial aid and grant programmes.

OK stop cying ;-)

Thanks for responding, Nick.

I hope others take note of the difference in education cost. It seems to
me the cost of an education and beginning the adult phase of life already
in heavy debt, is a subject that should unite young people around the
world.

Does anyone understand technocracy? Someone is trying to convince me
that technocracy would mean plenty for everyone and therefore it would
also end wars. My head is being very stubborn about understanding
technocracy, but I would love a world where education were very
affordable and people had time for education all their lives. If an
economic system would make this possible, and at the same maintain our
individual liberty and power, change would be a very good thing.

Hi
Hopefully this isn't too off topic!
I'll use my course for this year only as an example:
eight papers (ie. courses) at either $NZ 480 or $550 each. Works out at
around $NZ 4050 for the year.
Multiply that by five years for my degree equals $NZ 20,250
So in US dollars that is $US 1615 for this year, and $US 8,070 (approx) for
five year degree. (If I'm converting correctly).
Take into account the current unusual exchange rate between NZ and the US of
course!!
Of course these are at subsidised (by government) rates as you will find in
most post-British-colonial countries (e.g. Australia). Still, fees rise
quite considerable every year and it is still very very difficult for
students to live without borrowing for tuition through the government
student loan scheme. This leaves most graduates spending much of their adult
life paying off their debt to the government.

Hope this gives you all a little bit of insight :)

Nick

Jill,

I have a huge preference for tax paid education. Ideally democracy
enables the most people to give their best contribution to society. We
were proud to have equal opportunity for everyone and thought this
prevented us from being a classist society. Today, Europe represents our
proud ideals better than we do. That makes our national defense a
perversion unworthy of anyone's life.

Good show Matt,

The Web site I checked for estimated cost of one year of college in US
this year is,
$11,375.

The exchange rate for pounds and dollars is close to 67 cents for a
dollar, so you might as well double $11,375, to roughly 22,000 in pounds.

Can someone give better figures? This $11,375 is for public
universities. Private ones are much more expensive. I think this cost
of education is ridiculous for a nation that insist it wants well
educated people, and many of us seriously question how well individuals
are educated for this money. What do you think?

(CS)I have heard students around the world pay much less for their college
educations than students in the United States have to pay for their college
educations. I would like to raise awareness of differences in college
cost. Would you mind telling us what is the adverage cost annual cost of a
college education in New Zealand?

Carol,

I've studied with Europeans, and I know for a fact that their tuition costs
are radically lower. However, bear in mind that there is no such thing as a
free lunch. The tuition is subsidized by the tax, and their taxes are much
higher. Six of one, half dozen of the other, you pay either way.

Cheers,
Jill

It's not New Zealand but in Britain the government has
recently started charging a thousand pounds a year (funded
through a low interest loan scheme) for those attending
university, much to the annoyance of the vast majority of
people.
