Centennial
I just got the DVD's of Centennial (the mini series) this weekend and have had a watching festival. (its 6 dvds rougly 3.5 hrs per disc) I remember watching this on TV when it was first aired. While I remembered Andy Griffith having a small part at the end of the last episode I didn't remember James Best in it. He has a small part as a helicopter pilot who is at a trial of another character in the last episode also. For those not familiar with this show it is about a fictional town in Colorado and covers from the early 1700's (which is before the town even exists) up to the 1970's. The book, which I picked up many years later in a half price book store, is much greater in detail and covers the history of the area from pretty much the beginning of time up to the 1970's. The very beginning is the best part with the story of the lives of Trappers Pasquinel and McKeag. By the time you get to the end and are seeing the great grandchildren (and beyond) of the original characters it is easy to get lost about who is a decendent of who. Overall a great story tho. Dapper Dan Make sure your buffalo is facing the right way on your nickles. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Barney's Middle Names
Barney actually had 3 middle names. Bernard Milton P. Oliver Fife. I just always figured his parents had a lot of relatives that wanted Barn to have their name and so Barns mom and dad gave him 3 middle names to keep all the relatives happy and peace in the family. I still gotta wonder what the P stood for. Maybe he had a relative named Penelope and they just used the initial to make her happy? In an opposite bit of non TAGS wierdness, Johnny Cash's orginal name was J. R. Cash on his birth certificate. His parents simply called him JR his whole life. I am not sure if He or his parents ever actually said what the J.R. was supposed to stand for. When he enlised in the Air Force they forced him to come up with a given name instead of an initial. He chose John, and later when He signed to Sun Records he changed it to Johnny Dapper Dan Just sitting around with a bucket on my head. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Favorite Color Episode
See that just goes to show ya, one mans pie is another mans poison. Of all the color episodes, Aunt Bee's Big Moment is one of my favorites. (Dinner at Eight is probably on the top of the heap tho). Back in that time it was easier to learn to fly than to drive a car. After all, you don't have to parallel park a plane. I was flying myself by the time I was 14. I couldn't even legally drive a car yet. Although I did drive tractors and pickups around on the farm since I was 13 or so. It didn't take that many lessons to do a solo flight. Of course there is a long way to go from soloing to actually getting a pilots license. Dapper Dan Over and Under ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Howard McNear hearing
I was listening to a old radio show called The Six Shooter (1953) which starred Jimmy Stewart. In this episode Howard McNear played the main episode character, an old prospector friend of Jimmy's. Jimmy Stewart plays a character called Britt Ponset, also known as The Six Shooter, in this short lived (one year) radio show. Howard had two mules he named Pierre and Evette. He makes a gold strike and gets robbed and shot and Britt has to convince him to have the will to live since Howard thinks he has nothing left to live for. He had spent his whole life looking for gold and now that he found it he doesn't feel like he has anything left to do with his life. At the end Britt is telling how Howard went to the Klondike and everyone was laughing at him saying he'd never find any gold there. LOL Howard McNear, Parley Baer, and John Dehner (Aunt Bee's Medicine Man) all turn up in episode after episode of old time radio shows. All three of them have such distinctive voices that you can recognize them usually by the second word out of their mouths. John Dehner also had two very successful radio shows he starred in. Have Gun Will Travel (One of the very few radio shows to be created from a TV show. Most times they went the other way around.) and Frontier Gentleman in which he plays a newspaper reporter named J. B. Kendall. He works for the London Times and is on assignment in the old west. This was a very well done show and ranks in my top 3 favorite radio programs which include Gunsmoke (with William Conrad which preceded the television show) and The Six Shooter. All three have excellent scripts and at times weave real events or people from the old west into their stories. Which makes them feel more authentic. I was too young to hear most of these programs when the originally aired except for CBS Radio Mystery Theatre which aired from 1974 to 1982. I remember sneaking my transistor radio into bed to listening to it. But I never heard a complete episode since the only station I could pick up that broadcast the show was in Chicago and I was in Arkansas. Most times the show would fade in and out and I rarely every could keep up with the plot. I recently bought the entire collection, 1399 shows, on 4 DVD's and listen to an episode every day during my lunch hour at work. I spend most of my weekends listening to that and the many other episodes of Old Time Radio that I have downloaded from this web site I found recently. It has episodes and sometimes even complete collections of almost any old radio show you can think of. And they are all free since all these shows are now in public domain. In fact this site only contains public domain stuff. http://www.archive.org/details/oldtimeradio I know I'm gonna get a Rude from Alan or Paul since I have drifted so far off topic but Old time radio and Andy are two of my favorite things and I like to share when I can. Gome the House Guest and TV or Radio
Paul Mulik, you beat everything. I had watched this episode more than once and never even thought that they might be listening to the radio instead of watching TV. In episodes where the radio/phonograph is used. (I can remember two episodes off the top of my head, One where the fun girls turn on the radio in Andy's house and one where Opie is playing some records) It has always been located to the right of the door that leads to the kitchen from the living room. Right there in the corner. The TV was located closer to the front door underneath one of those windows that face the front porch. In the House Guest episode at the end of the Boy and his dog show, Andy clearly walks over to the corner of the room near the kitchen door and turns off the radio. One way that you can be sure is that he reaches down in a vertical motion to switch off the set. If he had been reaching to turn off the TV he would have used a horizontal motion since the knobs on the TV faced the front of the set and didn't face straight up like the radio did. This also explains why the Taylors couldnt figure out what happened on the episode. If it had been a TV episode even if Gomer was talking they still could have seen the video part of the episode and pretty much known what happened. But with radio they couldnt hear the episode due to Gomers talking. Well thats my Theory. It was the episode A Piece Of The Action The crew go to a planet only to find that the previous ship left a book behind about chicago mobs of the 20's. The race on the planet liked to copy things and thought the book was a bible of how earth was so they copied it. Barney and the Harmonica
I've been thinking about this and maybe Barney really did play the harp part but did it in the studio and just lip syncd in the filming. Based on the previous descriptions about how the Dillards recorded in a studio for their episodes this would make sense. Now as to Jim Lindsey I think we settled this way back that he didn't play the guitar and all of the guitar music was recorded by several other people since there were two guitars and even drums in his scene when he gets mad and auditions for his job in his first episode. TAGS and copyrights
To answer the question about the copyrights for anyone wanting to know. A television show usually has two copyrights. One on the Theme Music and words. And another on the show itself. On TAGS, some one goofed and 16 episodes of Season Three did not have the copyrights renewed on those episodes. They are now in what is called public domain. Which means any yahoo that wants to can put the episodes on Tape or DVD and sell them for any old price the market will allow. However it is illegal for them to use the real TAGS theme song as it is still protected under its own copyright. So most DVD's you buy from someone besides Paramount will have their own version of theme music. Any DVD out there of these episodes with the correct music is in violation of the music copyright and you know what Barney would say about that. Nip It! Nip It In The Bud! Seat Scooting
I always thought that when they showed the seat scooting shots that they were promoting driving safety by showing people it was safer to get in on the passenger side of a parallel parked automobile rather than walking out in traffic to get in on the drivers side. Not that mayberry had much traffic but when it did accidents did seem to happen (ie Malcum Merriweather and the bike and truck accident, The big traffic incident when Andy was out of town, Barney bumping into a car when he thought he was jinxed by the lucky letter, Barney getting his toes ran over, and Andy hitting Aunt Bee's car. I could go on and on but you get the idea.) Maybe someone on the show had an incident themselve or someone they knew and they just wanted to pass along a safety tip. Obviously after more and more cars got bucket seats and consoles this practice fell out of use. The one camera reason presented earlier makes a lot of sense also. Columbia House VHS Tapes
I finally got my 8th season of Andy on DVD. So I am now willing to part with my Columbia House VHS tapes of TAGS. I thought I would see if anyone here on the digest would be interested in them before I put them on Ebay or something. I have all 20 tapes and all are in perfect mint condition with the original cases. I have watched each tape only once to make sure they worked. The only exception is two tapes that I rewatched one episode each (for research purposes of course lol). I paid 23.94 each for each tape, for a total of roughly 470 dollars invested. Overdubbed?
I was watching the episode Opie's Most Unforgettable Character the other day and I noticed something. When Andy, Howard and Goober are all sitting together on the bench and talking about Opie writing his composition on Andy, Andy says I guess I've done a little living in my time and then the camera cuts to Goober, You never see his mouth move but you hear someone say, You can say that again but it doesn't even sound like Goober, Was this just supposed to be Goober thinking this or was the original dialog damaged and someone just overdubbed this in? Also in the last episode of the season I noticed something else. This was the episode about the Gas Station contest. And the thing that really struck me was how much blue was in this episode. None of the other episodes up to this point, even when they had out door scenes had any bright blues in them like this episode did. Most of the other outdoor scenes are shot against the court house or Andy's house and they all have that green overtone to them and obviously all the interiors have that same coloration to them. It really made this episode stand out to me. Cast Sighting Or More like hearing
Just heard Parley Baer on an episode of This is your FBI, an old time radio show. He played a Location scout for a movie studio and gets hijacked by robbers while scouting a ghost town for a movie set. Bea Benadaret was his co-star and while I can't find a TAGs connection for her, She was the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel near Hooterville on the show Petticote Junction. I also just found out that she was the original voice of Granny from the Tweety and Sylvester Warner Brother cartoons. June Foray (already famous for her roles on the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons and her stint with Daws Butler [Famous for more cartoon characters than I can count but Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound are among two of them. I never knew he was the voice of Captain Crunch tho until today] on the Stan Freberg show) then took over the voice of Granny after Bea died in 1968. Glass in Cars
A lot of early TV shows and even movies would removed windshields from the cars due to reflections and glare of the glass when filming. They also liked to remove the rear view mirrors a lot from cars when filming. The Danny Thomas thing was the most obvious one I think I have ever seen tho. Superman and Mayberry
For the new members (and maybe some of the old) that don't know, the old TV show The Adventures of Superman was filmed on the same 40 acres lot that TAGS was filmed on. For exteriors anyway. Only it was filmed years earlier. But if you watch thru the episodes you will see tons of familar TAGS locations altho they have different names. There was even one of the old Batman episodes that uses a road on the side of the 40 acres lot in a car chase scene if I remember correctly, not to mention 2 episodes of Star Trek that used downtown Mayberry as exterior sets and one episode was filmed at Myers Lake (or Franklin Reservoir if you prefer its real name) Jim Nolt has a great website about the Superman TV show and has lots of aerial photo maps of 40 acres that show the buildings as they were used on the superman set and even has a section on the connection between the TAGS and Superman using the same location. One of the locations that was used over and over for the Clark Kent to Superman costume changes is the same alley where Otis is coming up the stairs with his hootch in the loaded goat episode. When he tells Trey that his father is the sheriff the chin strap on the helmet is fastened. The scene then cuts to Trey and then back to Opie, but this time the chin strap is unhooked and hanging loose. When they cut to the Station wagon backing out you see for a brief second the hood of Jase's car up with Gomer under the hood. (The hood had been down the whole episode so far) Then they quick cut back to Gomer and he is standing beside the drivers door of Jase's car again and the hood is down just like it was before. Mysterious Beauty Shop Door
I noticed this door also and it is only there in a few episodes in the first season. I think it goes away about the time the mystery door in the courthouse goes away. I would think that during the first season they did very little with the sets since they probably didn't know if the show was going to be a hit or not but by the end of the first season they realized it was going to be ok and they did a lot of remodeling between seasons to tidy things up a bit to make the exteriors and interiors match up a little better. I noticed....
Maybe I am going to get my trained noticer badge yet. (Or I could just get told that this has already been noticed and that I need to pay more attention to the digest lol) I was watching the first season on DVD again over the holiday weekend and noticed a few things. At Andy's house: In one of the first few episodes when you see someone walk into Andy's house there is almost like a porch area inside the house that runs from the kitchen wall to the entry door. It is about 3 feet wide and then you step down onto the floor of the house. This only shows up on the one episode that I can tell. Another thing I saw was that on the left side of the Rock fireplace there was a set of double wooden doors that evidently exited the rear of the house. They never show up again. (I think the stairs that went to the second floor were missing as well and when they were installed the doors were removed.) They were replaced with a curtained off window that is about the width of one door. The stairs take up the rest of the room where the second room would have been. Speaking of the fireplace in the early episodes there is not a full length mantle like you see in the later seasons. It has two small shelves on either side of the fireplace with a Deer head in the center above the fireplace. On one episode in the kitchen the camera is backed up or unzoomed enough that you can see the back of the kitchen stove and even floor behind it. There should actually be a wall there. I think the camera man realized it and quickly zooms or dollies in. At the Courthouse: We all have noticed the dissappearing door but did you ever notice that there are no windows on the inside views of the courthouse for almost half the first season. But on the outside views of the courthouse the windows exist. When windows finally do come on the inside only the window behind Andy's desk and the one to the left (if you were sitting at the desk) of the desk show up. The window that would be on the left side of the court house doors from the outside never shows up I guess until after the mysterious door dissapears. When the first two windows do show up they dont have the weird window boxes like they do later on. Also the window directly behind Andy's desk gets moved on down towards the corner of the wall later since most of the season 2 and later episodes have a solid wall behind Andy's desk with a map on it. Also in the first episode there is a little swinging gate at the area where you go from the sherriff's office to the jail. This is removed pretty quickly too. Helens Hair
I noticed while watching the 5th season DVD's that Helen changed her hair style in the Episode Guest in the House. This is where cousin Gloria visits while she is broke up with her husband. In most of Helen's appearances prior to this she almost always has her hair up in a bun or some style where it is put up, but you see it down at least once in the episode Andy and Helen Have Their Day. But when she gets her new hair style I think that it really framed her face better and showed how pretty she really was. By the color years she had changed her hair style again and I don't think it worked as well for her. But for several episodes near the end of season 5 I think they finally had found a hair style that really worked well for her. I can't remember Thelma Lou ever changing her hair style through out the entire run. But I could be wrong. I got my Season 5 DVD's on monday and have been watching them. One thing I thought was really neat about all the seasons is the images that have been on the DVD's themselves and the fronts and backs of the DVD Cases Season 1 which had 4 discs in individual cases has a different picture on the front of each case of Andy and one or two others in the cast (mainly Aunt Bee, Opie, and Barn) This same picture is also on the DVD itself in that case. The back of the cases have been made to look like Mayberry Police stationary and show the disc contents and at the bottom of each paper it has a message written on it. Disc 1 says: Barney - Went fishing with Opie. Be back Later. Disc 2 says: Andy - Otis lost his keys again - Barn Disc 3 says: Pa - I came by - Opie Disc 4 says: Went to Floyd's for a trim - Barn In season 2 the format went to 5 discs in 3 cases and has stayed that way thru season 5 On season 2 the discs have an image of an apple pie. Each disc has more and more of the pie gone until the 5th disc is just an empty pie plate. The back of the case has an image of a recipe card from Aunt Bee with the disc contents on it. This set has the original sponser spots. Season 3 discs have an image of a tire on them which looks to be from the squad car, it has the white wall and the hub cab at the center. Star Wars and Mayberry
I was just thinking under a bucket the other day and started wondering what it would be like if Star Wars and The Andy Griffith Show ever got mixed up together. The following are some of the things that came to mind for me. They have a 2163 Ford Galaxy Police Landspeeder. The small sleepy planet of Mayberry is on edge of the known galaxy and is sunny and pleasant. It has lakes, rivers, trees and everything Mayberry. Andy still carries no weapons but Barney has a blaster, but Andy wont let him keep the power pack installed. He has to carry the power pack in his pocket. Barney is always installing the power pack anyway and accidently blasting things. Barney likes to show off his highly polished blaster to Asa who has an old corroded blaster with missing screws. Asa tells Barney that he has heard about his blaster. The State Troopers are like Jedi knights and carry Lightsabres and are going from planet to planet catching crooks and generally helping keep the peace When the State Jedi Troopers drop off a famous prisoner (Like say one of the Hutts) at Mayberry for a short time, Barney treats them like royalty. Mt Pilot and Raleigh are bigger, close by planets that have some action and Barney likes to go there sometimes. Anyone feel free to join in where they can and hang on. Howard McNear Hearing
Just heard Howard on an old radio show called Johnny Dollar (a radio show about an insurance investigator, with an action packed expense account lol) Howard plays a bum who had a life insurance policy taken out on him and now someone is trying to kill him to collect on it. He is not the first one to die by this method before the insurance company gets wise and sends in Johnny Dollar to investigate. So far Howard has been stabbed with an icepick, shot with a gun, and poisoned with bad booze and its only up to the 2nd part of a 5 part series. I didn't even realize it was Howard on last weeks episode because he was not on the show but for a few seconds. His character's name in this show is Indestructible Mike. At the rate they are trying to kill him off he will have to be indestructible just to last out the remaining 3 episodes lol. I've heard Howard on lots of old radio shows but this was the first time I ever heard him on Johnny Dollar. Howard's best radio appearance for me is when he plays Doc on the radio version of Gunsmoke starring William Conrad (Conrad also did the main character voice on a radio show called Escape which I like a lot.) The network wanted to bring the radio cast to TV and even went so far as to have test photos taken with the cast dressed up in western clothes. But they evidently didn't make the cut. I saw a copy of the picture somewhere on the internet and Howard and the girl who plays Kitty looked the best out of all of them.
