Subject: Announcing the Hardware donation program
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Dear Wikimedians,
The Wikimedia Foundation is pleased to announce a small new program called the
Hardware Donation Program.  In a word, it is a program designed to donate
depreciated (but fully working) hardware from the WMF office to community
members who would put it to good use.
The program, including instructions on how to apply, is described on Meta, here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Hardware_donation_program
Please read the information carefully. I especially encourage you to pay
attention to the program's design considerations, which determine most of the
decisions we'll be making.
We currently have approximately 20 laptops ready to be donated.  Applications
are welcome.
The upcoming Wikimedia Conference in Berlin (in about two weeks) would be an
excellent opportunity to deliver some of those laptops in person to approved
applications, so if you think you might be interested, I'd encourage you to
apply as soon as possible.
Please also help spread the word about this program, by forwarding this e-mail
to other Wikimedia lists you're on, and posting the link to the program page on
village pumps and *community* (not public) social media channels or other
communication forms you use.
Special thanks to User:Anntinomy from Wikimedia Ukraine, who had the idea of
asking about possible donation of older machines from WMF, and inspired this
program.
Mini-FAQ:
Q: Why are you doing this?A: WMF's Office IT determines a lifetime for work
machines, and regularly replaces older machines.  This creates a stock of older,
working machines, that are available for donation.  We can donate them locally
to San Francisco charities, but figure that if we can find low-cost ways to
deliver them to our own community members, that's so much better.
Q: Am I eligible?A: Read the fine program documentation.
Q: If I'm eligible, am I guaranteed a donated laptop?A: no.
Q: Once these 20 laptops are donated, will there be others?A: yes, eventually.
Q: How can you ensure people would use the machines for Wikimedia purposes?A: We
can't.  We'll be making a good-effort assessment of the likelihood of Wikimedia
use, and make a decision to donate (or not) the equipment. Once donated, the
equipment no longer belongs to WMF. We encourage, but can't enforce, reporting
on impact achieved using the equipment.
Q: I need a few laptops for my event in two weeks! Can I get them through this
program?A: No. Read the fine program documentation.
Q: I'm really happy about this!A: So are we! :)
Q: I'm really angry about this!A: So it goes.
Q: I have more questions!A: Hit 'Reply'. :)
Cheers,
Asaf___

[Wikimediaindia-l] Indic Language Wikipedia Outreach in United States

2015-01-05 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Hello,

Happy New Year everyone! :)

We are planning Indic Language Wikipedia workshops in U.S.
Please go through Project Link :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Indic_Language_Wikipedia_Outreach_in_United_States

Project idea What is the problem you're trying to solve?

Indic languages represent a large portion of languages used worldwide. The
number of contributors for Indic languages has been lagging other language
families for a variety of reasons. Internet connectivity in India being
limited/expensive is a major reason among them. Indic wikiprojects have
beens working to encourage more contributors for Indic Languages.

There are a number of areas on Indic wikipedias where content is either
lacking or is of poor quality. Health-related content is a prime example of
this.
Potential for solution

There is a strong and diverse Indian diaspora in the United States. Eastern
Seaboard has a large number of Indian expats that have either settled there
or live there for work/business. This was evidenced by the 20,000+ people
attending a speech in Hindi by the Prime Minister of India at Madison
Square Garden, New York.

In general, the Indian origin community in the United States has very high
literacy rates. They are also well-versed in English as well as at least
one of Indic languages. Access to Internet is not an issue for this
demographic. Enthusiasm for advancement of Indic languages is also evident
by the many initiatives being pursued by this group.
What is your solution?

   1. Dedicated workshops for Indian Languages in United States of America.
   2. Informal User Group to conduct periodic meetings/offline events.
   3. Collaboration with local chapters and editors to improve Offline
   Wikipedia in Indian Languages.
   4. Special content (health related articles/essential medicines info
etc) on Indic Wikipedia can be improved by specialized dedicated group of
   Indian medical students in U.S.
   5. Collaboration with (U.S based) like minded individuals and
organizations dedicated to improve Open Knowledge movement in India.

Pilot Project

Outreach events in

   - New York,
   - Washington D.C,
   - Boston
   - Colorado Springs

   - A session here will serve as an aide to developing and/or fine-tuning
   presentations and sequence of activities.

   - San Diego.

Goals

   - Reach out to more Indians to increase their understanding of how Indic
Language Wikimedia projects work, and enable them to pass this knowledge on
   to others.
   - Improving and building upon contributions to Wikimedia projects in
English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Commons etc.
   - Increasing visibility, reach and access to Wikimedia projects amongst
   Indian Americans, especially in students.
   - Sign up students interested in our various activities & any other
   training workshops planned.
   - Conduct outreach sessions in universities, student fests, fairs etc.

Other benefits

   - A strong, diverse and engaged students community.
   - Growth in editorship and readership from U.S.

We look forward to hear from you. Kindly share your views here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Indic_Language_Wikipedia_Outreach_in_United_States

Keep Supporting, Keep Inspiring :-)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Who is moderating India Mailing list ?

2014-09-15 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
I do support (neutral) moderation and sometimes it is necessary to moderate
bad faith mails/trolls etc.

Along with moderation, it would be nice to maintain log somewhere (abt
discarded/rejected e-mails)

For those who are curious about moderation process : Before rejecting any
E-Mail (most of the time), admins reply to individual with justification.
Delay might be due to busy schedule, additional administrators may solve
this issue.

Wow. Great responses.

We need to channelize all resources and idea's. Kindly consider creating
event page on Wikimedia India Chapter site (http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Events)

What about having partnerships either with established restaurant or

@Dear Anirudh :

I want to apologize for tone. However I am confused about moderation part.
I was searching answers, and as stated above - I do agree - pushing part

If moderation was purely done for ignoring warning then I am sorry for

Most importantly - Its people like you who define mailing lists by special

[Wikimediaindia-l] Chapter Misleading Community!

2013-02-14 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Dear Executive Committee,
Wikimedia India Chapter.

Could you be please be kind enough to clarify, Why EC was/is interested in
misguiding mailing list and Indian community?

When asked about CIS funding - Executive Committee member wrote :

*The Chapter has alwaya made things public and will xontinue to do so. If
> the CIS funds us, it will be madw public.
> *

Then why weren't they made public by you? CIS clearly stated - they are
funding Chapter, and in past (also) they have supported in-kind.

Why is the hesitation for acknowledging this? On the contrary - there is
strong rejection of even having any kind of connection with CIS from
Chapter representatives. (On the other hand CIS is graciously
open/alright to acknowledge links with the Chapter)

On A Query about CIS funding Chapter Flight Tickets : Response from
Secretary was-

*.making unsubstantiated claims on a public mailing list,
> *

Which part was unsubstantiated? Its the reality that this time Chapter
Board Member's Flight tickets ARE covered by CIS even if it includes
training the A2K team.
(CIS has already made it clear on this mailing list)

Why there is hesitation/resistance to have transparency?

Also, the Chapter President gave statement on same thread -

*Please be open and transparent to the
> community. The more you become transparent, it is better for al*l.
>

Are Chapter EC Members exception to this?

On same lines, Another EC Members says -

* The Chapter is financially accountable to it's MEMBERS,*
>

As correctly stated by , Chapter is having money from WMF, Which comes from
individual donations. So ideally
Chapter should be accountable to the overall community and not just its
members, as rightly pointed out by someone

Again, What is the need to find excuses for transparency?

When there was statement that ''AGM travel expense is covered'' instead of
correcting statement and saying, its wrong - and CIS is paying for Board
Trip (which is coinciding with CIS training!)
Even Chapter President preferred to give out half truth and kept everyone
in dark. And there was Secretary and another EC Member to take whole
mailing list on a ride!

Why it is important?

This could be start of new era - Where CIS supports Chapter financially
whenever needed.
(or in-kind as they did in past and hopefully will continue to do so).

So more and more volunteer efforts can be devoted for outreach/activities.

*Please remember that chapter is representation of the community and
> works for the community *
>

Current scenario gives wrong interpretation and implies that community
should not raise questions on transparency because after-all we are your
representation! Either consult community before lying or speak (complete)
truth.

Here is response from Sunil,CIS - *
>
> This month, we are reimbursing the Chapter EC travel and related
> expenses because the Chapter EC has kindly consented to support a
> training programme that CIS is organising for it's A2K team in
> Bangalore. It is only happy coincidence that they were also organising
> a meeting in Bangalore during those dates. I was not aware of this
> when I reached out to the EC and asked for their support us.
> *

>From Sunil's mail it is clear that Sunil extended the offer in good-faith,
unaware of Chapter-Board meeting falling at the same time. However Chapter
also seems to have taken this opportunity and is now shy to accept. I don't
understand why?

And why CIS was also kept in dark?

*CIS will cover air travel and accommodation for all EC members. CIS will
> also provide per diem for meals that are not provided during the
> ** training. Unfortunately, we don't have a separate budget for fee*s.
>

Along with 'air Travel', CIS is providing accommodation too.
And Last sentence about fee budget is interesting.

If Chapter is expecting public support for fundraising and other
activities, then it should be more transparent and 'should avoid organized
and dedicated efforts to misguide community/keep in dark.'

And Hope so CIS takes care of all the
remaining Chapter financial needs as well, Just keep community in loop.
And Thanks to Sunil/ CIS for being transparent and open.

Keep Clarifying, Keep Inspiring!

Dear Abhishek,

CIS is not supporting travel expenses for Chapter EC meetings. Nor has
CIS provided funding to the Chapter so far from the Wikipedia grant.
CIS has provided in-kind support to the Chapter in previous financial
years for ex. society registration costs and the costs of their

Dear Sunil,

Could you please share information about CIS supporting Chapter Travel
expenses?

And Its nice and positive move, Great to see CIS continues to support
movement in India.
Volunteers can devote their time in doing activities and CIS can support as
per request.

As Chapter is shy/silent about acknowledging funding from CIS - Hope so
your reply will clarify that CIS is there to support Chapter activities
irrespective of criticism.

Keep Supporting, Keep Inspiring! :)

India Community deserves to know answers. At one end Chapter is criticizing
CIS continuously on other hand its accepting financial help from them and I
am wondering whats wrong in acknowledging it! If someone is helping then
its ethical and normal to acknowledge it?

Its might be beginning of new era - where Chapter is focusing on outreach
and activities events and CIS taking care of financial needs.
Its good to see its already started..

Why Chapter is denying/ignoring fact flight tickets for members are covered
by third party?

It seems you are missing out whole point, I am talking about fixed expenses
and 'possible' activities. Like Board meeting travel expenses. Which can be
covered and are (already) getting covered by third parties like CIS.

So it makes more sense to spend volunteer efforts on outreach kind of
activities than running for money? specially when third parties are
interested in supporting financially?

When CIS is wrong, there is hard criticism, and when they support
financially - I guess there could be minimum acknowledgement?.
I think CIS may help chapter to cover other expenses also if needed. So
Chapter can focus on productive outreach and activities?

That is base amount, Someone from Chapter might be able to answer exact
fixed expenses? Its always easy to find 'in-kind' donations as compared to
cash. Its difficult specially when tax exemption is missing. And it might
need extra efforts to run for money.
And why? There are people/organization which are taking care of expenses
already!

These expenses can be covered easily if there is clarity on 'what is
needed'.

I have already explained 'in-kind' donation concept, Please see :

Point is - If expenses are well known like this, other organizations can
chip in to support Chapter. And 'in-kind' donations will be helpful.

Its good to see CIS is helping Chapter, and why Chapter wants to keep it as

It will be unfair to call it cheating, however -

1)Chapter is having 1.5 Lack+ Rupees in existing account.

2)Major Chapter Expenses such as Flight Tickets for AGM are covered by CIS.

I am waiting for someone to answer simple query - How much money is
required for next year activities? and Which activities are planned?

Lets have this clarity and transparency, so together we can make sure India
Chapter is also strong (financially) like other Chapters.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Indian Languages question

2013-02-11 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Interestingly - People are so sensitive over these words.

I was casual while using those for 'Spoken Wikipedia for Indic Languages'
and request for participation was sent to all mailing lists.
There was debate about Indic vs Indian vs Dravidian on same Mailing list
about usage.

And strong resistance was shown by other mailing lists privately, and
surprisingly on open mailing lists people were open to Use 'F' word and
censored criticism - I was unaware of such strong issues. Its always good
to respect sentiments over language grouping name.

After many mails, As of now Project name is 'Spoken Wikipedia for Indian
Languages<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spoken_Wikipedia/Indic_Languages>'
but it will be interesting to know Indic/Indian/Dravidian usage to cover
broader languages.

It might be useful to use Asian Languages term to cover major languages.

Thanks for starting this conversation.

2013-02-10 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Wow! This is nice..

Working in team for single spot will add new dimension. For Wikipedia Takes
Pune, we had group of 4 people for one location - After introductory
session, we provided them Google Map and Wikipedia Article copy of same -
So along with photograph they also learn about aspects of that place.
Example - Group going to ShaniwarWada Was briefed in advance about
importance and unknown facts about that place - so photographer is clear
about 'what' to capture. We requested to form group with stranges, so it
was 'fun' part - everyone got to spend whole day with strangers who shared
same photography passion...
Result of this exercise - Within 5 hours, 5,000+ photos were uploaded on
Commons. At end of day we had 6,500+ photos.

This is great team building exercise, we received many amazing volunteers
for club events. And majority work of Summit was executed by people who
were participant at Takes Pune event, later on they became key persons in
Club management.

All the best for Wikipedia Takes Kolkata!

Recently, There was talk/presentation by Chapter President encouraging
people to become member of Wikimedia India Chapter.
There is nice response to appeal and people are highly interested in being
member of Chapter, at same time few people have limitations like age and
nationality. They want to be associated with Chapter.

Regarding timing of query - as per information provided in presentation,
Membership will be counted from April-2013 to March-2014.
So it makes more sense to give our best to enroll every interested person
to become member by overcoming possible barriers.

This thread's name and content might be different - Will start new thread
with possible improvements so all suggestions will be on same thread and
execution might be easy.

Bangalore - One example could be Art of Living. And am clueless about
Karnataka Society Law's. In Pune Osho provides membership access to foreign
nationals, it might be registered differently (other than society.)

*As for your latter point on "'Is it adult censored organization?' -

That was comment from someone who had query.,
Other than voting, minors do have access to health, education and other
facilities. Govt provides service/'citizenship' to citizens irrespective of
age..
Like I suggested [possible solution] in another thread [[1]] - There can be
minimal/virtual membership. Its just to include every interested person
into Chapter. People may feel bad if we keep them away.
If possible - lets try to include as many people as we can??..

My only concern is to 'include' every interested wikimedian in Chapter.
(With due respect to Indian Laws)

Official Legal Member might be heavy and big thing and law might be having
problems with 18 age limit.

[possible solution]
What about having small level / virtual recognition and acceptance into
chapter? Once they cross 18+ limit , then they can become members
officially. Before that can we create sub-space where we can accommodate
everyone irrespective of age?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] How to set up a SIG?

2013-02-08 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
I want to clarify background about age query :

Regarding age limit - There were many queries from college students (around
15 to 17 years old) about joining Chapter - after inspiring talk by His
Highness Sudhanwa Joglekar (President, Wikimedia India Chapter). It was
decent talk at Club event about ''why someone should join Wikimedia India
Chapter'' .. It would add impact if Chapter talks/presentations end up with
distribution of membership forms. Thanks to him for inspiring below 18
years kids to join Wikimedia India Chapter.

When we told them it is only for 18+, first question they asked - 'Is it
adult censored organization?'

I was a wikipedian first and then became a chapter member, could not renew
> my membership and renewed membership recently and still a wikipedian.
>

I love your passion, Good to know irrespective membership you 'are' and
will be always a Wikipedian...Apart from this -
Lets overcome problems which you had, why you were unable to renew your
membership?
I hope problem was different than submitting birth-certificate to prove you
are 18+

*Chapter is to support the communities and not to create members.
> *

 *
*
*Chapter is there is support to community *is controversial part - lets
keep that aside.
Members are essential to make sure Chapter is there to support community.
Chapter is facilitated by members. So if Chapter is putting up efforts to
'create' members - its justifiable. Hope so they do it better by having
smooth membership registration/renewal process.

*I'd like to ask what are the benefits for a foreign national to be part of
> Wikimedia India (which is a country specific chapter) where he/she can be a
> member of his/her own country?
> *

Along with uninvited foreign money transfer problems - it might give
Chapter new direction and new perspective.
And whats harm in having foreign national as member?

and Congrats on Membership renewal. Now you are 'certified (18+) Member' as
well as (Indian) Wikipedian. ;)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] How to set up a SIG?

2013-02-08 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
I guess it is possible to extend membership criteria for foreign nationals
as well youngsters below 18 years. I know NGO's from Bangalore which accept
memberships from foreign delegates.

Can we expect - new Membership (April-2013 to March 2014) will be
available to everyone by crossing age and nationality barrier? :)

Maybe be (either Chapter or) WMF can clarify doubts and proposed budget.

It will be interesting to know process behind taking this big decision.
Chapter consulted community or WMF before launching fundraiser?
Who proposed idea and who approved it?

2013-02-07 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Dear Srikanth,

It different than asset concept. Its about making process cashless.
For example, Chapter needs xyz amount to manage Travel (For Board
meetings,attending events etc),

This can be zeroed down by having 'in-kind' Airline or
Travel/Hospitality partner.
i.e instead of providing money to they will offer service/tickets
directly, and this gives them tax exemption under
Corporate Social Responsibility
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_corporate_social_responsibility_in_India)

By providing cashless service - In return they get branding and
exemption from Government of India.

For company - its easy to provide service as compared to money, If
they provide money - then they have to pay tax.

So could you please provide Chapters requirements for next one year?
So we can find donors easily?
What are Chapters plans after receiving donations? If this is crystal
clear - then its easy to attract more

corporates and individuals to donate.

This is real glitch - There is separate WMF Fundraiser every year,
where Jimmy Wales makes appeal for donation.
People might get confused, Many Indians donate directly to WMF. Is it
fair to ask them to do same again?

>From third person, it looks like - WMF runs donation campaign, then
asks regional chapters to raise money
on their own instead of supporting them. Is there any kind of
rejection from WMF to support Chapter activities

financially? or Chapters proposed budget is beyond WMF approval?

Already we have few volunteers to spread Wikimedia mission in India.
Instead of spending volunteers precious energy on raising donations,
Its better to devote same energy to fulfill Wikimedia mission?

Just curiosity question : Before announcement - Was there any public
discussion about having 'separate' donation campaign?
Who proposed and approved idea?

Clarification about Chapters expected budget and 'exact' financial
requirements will enable easy donations.

Nice initiative.

It would be great to have 'in-kind' donations option along with monetary
option.

i.e If someone wants to donate projector, room, laptop etc in-kind, It may be
easy for donor also as well as Chapter to receive it. This will also make
sure Tax money is saved from both ends.

*Dear all,*
*
*
*On the second anniversary of the Chapter, we made public our intention of
running our first fundraiser. Going ahead with the first phase of this
plan, we will be running a central site notice on the chapter website for a
period of two calendar months starting 1 February, 2013. In the second
phase of this plan, we aim to approach high networth individuals and
corporates in the month of March 2013. This will be done using personal and
professional networks of current and past EC members, staff, volunteers
among others.*
*
Suggestions, help and support from the community on what we can do to
ensure success of this fundraiser are welcome. Every drop counts :)

Donations can be made by Online Bank Transfer (NEFT/RTGS) or by sending us
a Cheque through snail mail. We are unable to accept card payments at this
current time. Link to the donation page on our website:
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Donate

Thanking you,
Executive Committee,
Wikimedia India.

*Reasoning* (From our public statement on 4 January, 2013)

A lot of people may ask why the chapter needs a fundraiser when it has
access to WMF funding. The answer is, we are still ineligible for FDC of
WMF (we hope to be eligible for the second round of funding in 2013) and
would need to rely on grants, spending of which is restricted by the WMF.
Since formation, the chapter has relied heavily on the Executive Committee
to take on the burden of running the show. In an ideal world, the EC would
like to take on the role of guiding the chapter rather than actually be
responsible for operations after two years of incorporation, which should
be best done by professionals rather than volunteers in their spare time.

The chapter has hired an employee (Sowmyan Tirumurti, our Executive
Manager) as well as plans to lease its own office premises in Bangalore. We
will need the help of those volunteers who are in a position to support us.
It could be a small individual donation or in the form of a corporate
donation from an institution. A small token of support from you could go a
long way in helping us achieving our goals of furthering the movement in
India.*

Dear Abhishek,

I can take that query as one of the folks involved in preparing and
debating the original MOA clauses of the chapter.

The original intent was to keep membership criteria as open as possible -
age, citizenship, etc.
However the advise of the consultant who helped us with the society
registration was to limit membership to adults and indian citizens based
on their prior experience with getting these registrations through
quickly. We were advised that we could later seek permissions for the
above if the authorities so permitted.

Not with standing these limitations it took the lot of meetings with
authorities to get the formal registration through. I have attended many
of these meetings to get due clearance.

Hope that clarifies your query.

Arun

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Spoken Wikipedia Workshop - 16th December-2012 Pune.

2012-12-16 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Hi Vickram,

There are many Govt Channels like DD-Gyan or IGNOU, which showcase similar
projects.

I agree with you, project is having huge potential (with proper execution)
, and can be useful in rural India.
We can distribute CD or DVD to ministry n it can be channelized.

Another thing which we can do is - circulate articles through cell phone
operators. So say people can send SMS by typing Dengue to xyz number, n
they will receive article (similar to ringtone download).

We have added few sample of Spoken File (intentionally in sections) after
our todays workshop, Please have a look -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Club_Pune/Spoken_Wikipedia_Workshops#List_of_Languages_with_Volunteers

Before taking any bigger step, its better to have a trial in pilot project.
We are planning to run small pilot project in different pasts of India.
(Smaller stations in two tier cities in north and south India.)

Interestingly, many people from same background have shown interest in
helping us.
We are planning to have brainstorming session with potential partners
during Wikipedia Summit India 2013!

Do let us know what you think about having telecom supporters n local radio
channels.

Keep Supporting, Keep Inspiring!

Community Radio suggestion is brilliant,

Today we hosted first ever workshop and people from 13 different languages
contributed to pilot project.
P.S :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Club_Pune/Spoken_Wikipedia_Workshops

We are in touch with radio agencies which can air/distribute articles for
free of cost.

Also we are targeting NGO's working for visually impaired people - so we
can manually circulate articles to share knowledge with disabled people.

There are many aspects before launching, we are just learning from Pilot
projects.

Keep Suggesting, Keep Inspiring! :-)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimediaindia-l Digest, Vol 329, Issue 1

2012-12-07 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Hi Ravi,

Thank you so much appreciating efforts.

I just want to clarify few things :

*1) Summit - Conference : It is different - *

Summit skeleton is completely different as compared to conference.

Conference : One speaker and remaining audience. It is most of time - one
way communication. (except Q & A)

Summit : It is more interactive and two way communication, everyone gets
platform to share. (More like Panel discussion)
More details will be shared soon.

*2) Value dilation : *

Repeating same, Conference comes up with different model and skeleton. So
it is going to 'add value' to existing outreach.
Additionally , our aim is to host Summit every year at same place for
continuity.

*3) Just event? *

We are going to introduce projects to follow for one year. So Summit is
just kick start ti those ambitious projects.
Reports of projects will be published in next year's Summit, and new
projects will selected as per requirement.

*4) Chapter involvement : *

Chapter is official body in India, and it will be there in future too. We
have full respect for Chapter - as they were pioneer to introduce
WikiConference India, as well as many projects. It is difficult to imagine
Wiki outreach in India without Chapter.

We believe, Chapter is there is to support community initiatives, and
Summit is also community initiative.
We have '*requested*' Chapter to nominate three Chapter representatives in
planning committee, we are hopeful about their response.

*5) Community involvement : *

Summit itself is being planned *by small community*, we do understand there
is exists a *bigger and wider community* with lot of credibility and
experience.

We would also like to request community members to be part of Planning
Committee to execute whole activity.
Do let us know if anyone want to volunteer.
*
6) Why Summit, What is Spoken Wikipedia and Why Pune? *:

P.S : City, Summit and Spoken
Wikipedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Summit_India/About_Us>
*
7) There are many flaws and mistakes : *

Instead of having bullet-proof shell, Summit idea is to have discussion to
develop Wikipedia in more dynamic and innovative way (like Spoken
Wikipedia).

If we 've hurt anyone in whole process, we would like to apologize
publicly. At same, we expect support by assuming good faith. For Summit
2014 planning, definitely we will improve and learn from our mistakes.

*P.S :* Everyone working for Summit is volunteer, *No one is getting
fellowship or grants to run Summit.* We are working professionals, who are *
donating* their time and energy to make Summit happen. It is by the
community, for the wider community event.

We believe Spoken Wikipedia through Summit is going to bring hope of light
in disabled persons life.

Keep Suggesting, Keep Inspiring! :)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Report : Wikipedia Workshop at U.S Consulate, Mumbai

2012-12-05 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
On World Disability Day (3rd December 2012) special workshop was conducted
at U.S Consulate Mumbai.

Event started with talk by U.S Consul General Peter Haas on 'Internet
Freedom' and he explained how internet is working as catalyst throughout
globe.
Bishakha Datta, Trustee of Wikimedia Foundation spoke about Wikipedia in
21st century, and how it is useful to share knowledge.
Q & A was conducted after both talks.

Basic introduction to Wikipedia session was conducted. After session, there
was brainstorming session on How Spoken
Wikipedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spoken_Wikipedia/Indic_Languages>can
empower India and how it can be beneficial to disabled.

Many attendees agreed to volunteer to record developed articles on Indian
Language Wikipedia. Another discussion happened regarding having tie-up
with cell phone companies to circulate recorded articles.

Event concluded with presentation by U.S Embassy Adviser on 'Education and
US' followed by visa related questions and answers.

Times of India covered event on next day -
'Come 2013, Wikipedia will start talking'
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Come-2013-Wikipedia-will-start-talking/articleshow/17472682.cms

We are thankful to U.S Embassy, Bishakha Datta, Pai-ILS and everyone who
helped us to organize this workshop. There is possibility and scope for
such similar workshops in other U.S Consulates.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Death and Post-mortem of Indian Education Program pilot

2011-11-14 Thread Abhishek Suryawanshi
Regarding so called death and post-marten

I wont be right person to talk about CoEP or SSE, I am assigned to SNDT
Women's University,So I will stick to the work and responsibilities
assigned to me...
it is challenging to engage female editors as we have less women editors.
(IEP is still running in SNDT)

Instead of following classic approach of going to Classes and teaching
them*during lectures
*, I preferred to have fun workshops on Sunday's where they come together
for 3 hours and do "collaborative editing"

Even before India Education Program, I had conducted Wiki Editing
Workshops, and even without marks and prize students from workshops are
editing wikipedia regularly. And Whole world edits wiki not to get marks
but to learn and to have fun.
So for me it was ideal to follow fun workshops for my own assigned IEP
class.

And current status of my class is - Everyone started editing wikipedia, so
we have new women editors who never edited wikipedia before...regarding
articles - not great, quality is not good, still need to conduct more
workshops to improve quality of their work.

Good thing about class is - Class Teacher attends Community Meet-ups and is
aware of ongoing activities (sometimes more updated than myself).

Another good thins - Workshops are on Sundays in absence of teachers, so
they can ask doubts freely. and can have real fun.

still I have to work hard to improve "quality" of articles through
workshops, and hope so other classes CA's (SSE and CoEP) find such
alternative which is more effective. As of now, CoEP and SSE follows
classical *presentations during lectures* method.

We will resume workshops after SNDT exams. Will keep updating all of you
about progress at SNDT and IEP.

Thanks to those who supported :-)

Keep Supporting, Keep Inspiring!

Best,
Abhishek Suryawanshi
