2012-10-18 Thread Branton Obwari
Last meeting we had constructive deliberations on the way forward for
the Chapter .We agreed among among things that ,we need to do a fresh
membership drive ,the six million dollar question was, who is an
eligible Chapter member ?We explored the following scenarios
 1. Membership based on being a lister on the WMKE ,where most of us are
2.Membership based on payment of the membership fee as enshrined in
our by laws
3.We have members of the Foundation who are not expressly members of
the Chapter
It was observed and noted that being a lister on the Chapter mailing
list does not mean you are a member o the Chapter ,interestingly a
mailing list is 'a members only ' platform.
As we seek to give WMKE a fresh life by doing a fresh recruitment
by the end of the year , i call upon your views on this matter ,
my regards

Been following this issue for a while and i must say i have restrained
myself from being judgmental , Steve, there is no justification for your
actions whatsoever ,BUT your admission is a step in the right direction ,
We have learned our lesson albeit with a painful experience ,its a learning
process WMKE will emerge stronger .
I want to believe that if we had the structures in place ,the unfortunate
incident will not have occurred ,i call upon WMKE members to rededicate
themselves to the activities of this young chapter , to the
board, registration of WMKE is long overdue ,an audit of the expenditure is
required finally the issue of joint account .

2012-08-28 Thread Branton Obwari
its in the interest of wmke for the board to bond and work together in
harmony, we condemn the name calling bit , For the deputy chair to talk in
the manner that he did points out to the frustration and lack of
communication @ the board level ,for the audit committee to opt out like it
did points out to the same, ,The chair rather that retorting should reach
out to his colleagues and set out the communication channels to avert
such,Now thats leadership.
i am of the opinion that the board meets b4 8th and do the in house
agree on issues we raised then collectively respond to chapter members on
8th ,thats just but a suggestion ,
Guys lets avoid the sideshows coz @ the end the day ,this issues must be
addressed .

2012-08-27 Thread Branton Obwari
Oscar ,
Thanks for addressing this matter that is threatening the future of
WMKE , by your own admission things are not looking good, i even din't
know Grace has left the group ,For our info Grace Abbas were just
NOT ordinary members but founder members who contributed immensely to
its project were in charge of various ongoing projects within WMKE
,we don't want to see an exodus of members ,do we ?
Its wrong for anyone to try imagine that this matter can be
swept under the floor ,When you guys assumed office we thought there
will be a deliberate effort to speed up incorporation of WMKE ,
Questions ,Whats holding us/you from creating a joint account for
WMKE as most of us are in support of the same ? ,What is the status of
the incorporation ,We rooting for incorporation because other than
defining roles ,We all know there are projects that involved WMKE
relating with government non governmental organizations which cannot
be possible if we are not a legal group.
I don't know the procedures of calling for a meeting ,but i once
again want to appeal to our chair to come up with a date ,soon is a
proper word ,to address this issues ,we still believe in the board
members ,but you should not continue behaving like its business as
usual while people are opting out ,

It is rather unfortunate that we as WMKE members dont like to be Critiqued,
we prefer having issues sugar coated and personally I dont do that. The main
reason why we got ourselves in this state in the first place is the failure
of the Board( of which I am part of) and all WMKE members to do joint
accountability and raise questions and demand answers. That said, I

Betreff: [Wikimedia Kenya] [Announcement] Wikimedia Kenya's New Board
 Datum: Sa., Mär. 31, 2012 16:22

 Hi all,

It is with great pleasure for me to announce the inaugural Wikimedia Kenya
 board that comprises of:

 Alex Wafula
 Ann Njeri
 David Mugo
 Oscar Limoke
 Stephen Wanjau

The Board's got a diverse range of experience -- with folks working in the
government sector, internet industry, financial expertise and leadership
 skills.

I think that they're a good fit for our egalitarian, international,
non-profit culture. And we've got a woman on the Board, which matters to
 me
because we will have someone to relate to, when it comes to gender-gap
 issues :)

Many thanks to those who assisted in the elections process: Chris,
Branton, Cliff Oliver. And many thanks to all the nominees who took
 their
time to submit their candidature and also answer our questions.

Let's all welcome our new Board as they orient themselves in their new
 roles.

 Thanks,
 Abbas.

PS -- Note to the Board: I've forwarded your names to be added to Internal
Chapters Mailing Lists. I am also looking into creating your Board
 Mailing List.

[Wikimedia Kenya] RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS BY KOSGEI

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
Hello Board,
Here are the answers to the questions
1. Why do you think you suit to be in the board of WMKE?
I have been a part of WMKE for over a year now and I have seen it
grow. I understand the tasksand challenges that lie ahead and I
believe taking a lead role as a Board member I am going to leverage on
the lessons and experiences that I have learned since I joined so that
we Make Wikimedia Kenya a chapter of excellence and a model to be
emulated all across our continent.
Having worked in the education and technology field for quite sometime
I know that knowledge is a great resource that has the capacity to
change generations and alter the course of history for the better. I
am therefore very supportive of the Wikimedia Vision and I will bring
with me my experience as an open source enthusiast and a Webfwd for
the success of the chapter.

2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in WMKE
projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be done
differently?

We Should work to improve member participation and come up with
projects. I do believe the mailing list is a good form of
communication but only if used in the right way so that we have only
the most important and relevant information on the mailing list and
not too much that it causes inconvenience.

3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc), please tell us which
particular skill set have you worked in previously, like in another
society or organisation?

I bring with me plenty of experience in management having worked in
the educational field as an administrative assistant at Bridge
international Academies, as an Operations Associate at Mprep and also
as agribusiness officer at PanAAC.

I am also good in networking and building communities and I hope to
use this skills in improving wikimedia Kenya

4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and a language strategy for WMKE?

I have worked on Swahili and English and I beleive we should really
work more in improving the local languages
particularly swahili.

5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter so as to ensure the growth of WMKE as a
whole?

I will encourage more outreach projects to educational institutions
and also work towards having entry level projects for the newbies. e.g
Wikpedia Takes Nairobi.

6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to raise
funds supposing the parent Wikimedia Foundation won't avail funds to
run the aforementioned project?

Having taken part in the annual fundraiser I learned a lot of lessons
on the topic.

1. Wikimedia Fundraiser is facilitated by 2 things, Banners and Appeals.

2. The banners and appeals used in other parts of the world may not
have the same impact as it does here in Kenya.

We therefore need to come up with Banners and that best describe our
local experience and also have a lower level of contribution that most
people can afford. I am thinking of the Kenyans for Kenya intitiative
where it was possible for people to donate as low as 10Shs.

Therefore working with the team we will come up with the best
fundraiser strategy that best fits our local chapter.

7. What kind of a project/ activity would you envision WMKE and its
members undertake in order to fulfill the objectives of Wikimedia
Foundation as a whole?

We need to further on the exiting offline project and also work on
attracting more editors in our Swahili Wikipedia. My goal is to have
at least 300 edits per month on Swahili Wikipedia.

The other project is partnering with chapters in other parts of the
world on potential projects that can be replicated locally. e.g the
Wik1 Africa project.

Warmly,
Isaac K. Kosgei.

[Wikimedia Kenya] ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS BY ANN NJERI

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
1. Why do you think you suit to be in the board of WKME?
Firstly, I am willing to contribute my time and other resources as a
leader as I seek to serve others with the objective of attaining the
common good for society as a whole. I know there are those specialized
skills and talents that I have which will contribute to build WKME,
especially the Kenyan chapter. I may not know much but I’m willing
to learn and I believe that’s the most important thing. I am a team
player who believes that the more is yielded when we collaborate. We
also need a female representative on the board and a place which I am
ready to take up.
2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in the
WKME projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be
done differently?
There is room for improvement, I speak also for myself. We need to be
more dedicated to the projects that we do as well as build the spirit
of solidarity in our midst by taking all successes and failures as a
team and not individually.
I would suggest that we attempt to have online meetings where we can
conference as well as chat live. This will help counter the problem of
unavailability of members for the meet-ups, increase number of
meetings and kill the problem of need for geographical proximity.
3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc) please tell us which
particular skill set you have worked in previously, like another
society or organization?
I have accounting skills that have been gained not only theoretically
but practically. I have completed CPA (certified Public Accountant).
I have also worked in Sarova Stanley in the accounts department. This
will help assist greatly in maintaining accurate accounts based on
accounting standards requirements.
I am also a marketer having only one year left to complete my degree
in Marketing and Finance. Early next month I will be working in
Synovate Kenya, a research firm. The skills gained therein will be
useful for us to develop strategies and invest in research that is
useful in solving various challenges we have like getting and
retaining editors.
I also serve in the Leadership of Global Leadership interlink (GLI),
an international organization that is seeking to build leaders in
their formative years so that they can uphold ethical principles all
through their lives. We carry out duties like organizing conferences,
training of members, preparing content to be taught and discussed
among other administrative tasks.

4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and language strategy for WMKE?
Sadly I have not worked in any languages so far but I do intend to in
the future. A language strategy can be that of getting as many tribes
as possible to contribute to building of Wikipedia. It may seem
difficult but we have an example from the current local radio stations
broadcasted in various local languages to learn from. Our pride comes
from our culture which gives us our identity, something we should all
be proud of.
5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter to ensure the growth of WKME as a
whole?
I think the best place to start is to research into the question “Why
don’t people edit, and if they do, why are most people not committed?”
The answers to the above questions can give us a guide to formulate
strategy that will increase and retain editors.
On speculation though, I think the idea of Wikimedia has not really
sunk in the mind of many Kenyans let alone the issue of editing. I
remember when we went to Kenyatta University and one of the senior
lecturers had not heard of the concept Wikipedia. There is need to
increase the sensitization that will help us attract more Kenyans. We
need to come up with appeals that will reach out to the human
component in all humans; that of contributing to the common good of
all. There is need to communicate the benefits that people will get
once they become contributors because most people look at their end of
the deal “What’s in it for me?” The benefits need not be monetary
because the last thing we need to do is increase our costs.

6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to raise
funds supposing the parent Wikipedia Foundation won’t avail funds to
run the aforementioned project?
Partnerships are crucial, which can be very fruitful in a day when
firms are seeking avenues for CSR (corporate social responsibility).
We just need to be bold and creative enough to come up with projects
and present them to the corporate for financing. It’s not easy, but
it’s possible. It doesn’t have to be about the money only since there
are institutions that periodically change their computers so we can
solicit for donations of computers to those schools that have few or
none.
The Ministry of Education can be a powerful source of finance. We can
avail ourselves as the tools they will

2012-03-29 Thread Branton Obwari
1.why do you think you suit to be in the board of WMKE?

Because I have and was among the founders of WMKE. I have dedicated
and worked hard to see WMKE to its current form and I still have the
energy and zeal to take even to greater heights.

 2. What is your take on the level of participation of members in
WMKE projects/meetings/mailing list? Anything you think should be done
differently?

I think our participation on the mailing list has been mostly vague
and somewhat with empty talk. Having regular physical meetups should
help us resolve issues fast and efficiently and plan for projects too.
Our mailing list should just be used for Communication en Mass

 3. As a board needs members with different skills (e.g.
administrative, financial, public relations etc), please tell us which
particular skill set have you worked in previously, like in another
society or organisation?

Team leadership ,Project management and selflessness skills are what I
have acquired through my involvement with both the Wikimedia Kenya,
The OLPC Movement in Kenya and a few other personal and voluntary
engagements

 4. Which languages have you worked in so far? And what is your
position on both a language policy and a language strategy for WMKE?

I have worked in Both Swahili and English and I have no reservations
on language policy for WMKE. Both languages suffice and should remain
our key focus./

 5. How would you best deal with the issue of editor attraction and
retention in our local chapter so as to ensure the growth of WMKE as a
whole?

Through Having a number of Wikimedia Outreaches and Wiki Academies to
showcase and teach people and members of the WMKE about editing and
the need to. The need to have our local content from our own
perspective is very vital.

 6. Now that we are an independent chapter, how do you plan to
raise funds supposing the parent Wikimedia Foundation won't avail
funds to run the aforementioned project?

Through Local Partnerships and campaigns on the social media to
sensitize people on WMKE and the need to preserve our Knowledge.
Accepting donations via local means eg Mpesa as low as 100 will allow
us to reach to the large audience and help us raise funds.

 7. What kind of a project/ activity would you envision WMKE and
its members undertake in order to fulfill the objectives of Wikimedia
Foundation as a whole?

  Abbas,

The name of the candidate answering appears in the subject line. As I too
had problems with reading the answers in unformatted email messages, I’ve
set up a page on our WMKE wiki (
 http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections/Q%26A) plus corresponding
sub-pages with your further question to each candidate, and hope that this
can be used by us. If my proposal doesn’t meet with approval, I’m happy to

Candidates, please answer members' questions directly on your personal

 remain on top.

I know this is simply a formatting issue but to me, it goes back to

other values in a person. It can easily be translated as self appointed
dominance, which is not fair or democratic and is not a leadership value.

 Hallo wiki-medians,
Thank you Steve and Ann for noting the error on the time give. Correction
has been acknowledged and the requisite changes have been made below.

1. *Declaration of intention.* This serves as an official announcement
by a member to contest for the position of board member of WMKE. This can
be done on our official mailing list, as most of you have done, and the
last date for this activity will be on Wednesday, 21st March 2012 by
2359hours.
2. *Registration of contestants.* This will involve the determination
of whether an applicant is eligible to contest for the position of a board
member of WMKE as per the Chapter's Constitution or any other rules agreed
upon by the members. This is fully the responsibility of the electoral team
and the results are to be released on Saturday, 24th March 2012 between
noon and 2359hours.
3. *Setup of the contestants bio-page.* A bio page on the wiki will be
setup for the purpose of giving all the contestants an opportunity to
wikify their plea to the members on why they are best suited for the job.
This will be coordinated by the electoral team and the bio-page on the wiki
will be setup on Friday, 23rd March 2012 by 2359hours.
4. *Bio posting by the qualified contestants. *All the contestants
that qualify to contest will be expected to post their bio's on the
developed wiki (Number 3) by Sunday, 25th March 2012 at 2359hours. Note
that a qualified contestant has 24 hours to complete this task or be
disqualified.
5. *Posting of Questions to the contestants. *In order for us to have
a Question and Answers (QA) session online, questions will be sent to the
to all qualified contestants by e-mail. The electoral team will then
receive the various responses from the qualified contestants (PRIVATELY),
after which the team will wikify them depending on the contestants turn to
respond to the views and opinions of the members. This posting will be done
on Sunday, 25th March 2012 by 2359hours.
6. *Response to questions asked by the contestants. *The contestants
are expected to respond to the questions asked on Monday, 26th by
1800hours. They will send this responses to the electoral team privately
and NOT on our usual mailing list. This is aimed at ensuring the QA
sessions are conducted in an orderly manner and equal time will be availed
to all contestants to interact with the members.
7. *QA sessions.* This will involve the posting of the responses
provided by the contestants on the wiki by the electoral team, and an
eventual discussion by the members and contestants. Each member will have
specific time to interact with the members through the setup wiki. This
will be conducted from Tuesday, 27th March to Thursday 29th March 2012.

8. *Open Day.* This will be on Friday, 30th and contestants will be
allowed to post openly in our mailing list and involve members in
discussions. A Skype chat will be chaired by the electoral team later in
the day to try and get the contestants to interact with the members.***
*
9. *Election Day. *This will be on Saturday, 31st March 2012 at a time
and venue that will be communicated by the electoral team by Wednesday,
28th March 2012 latest 1600hours.

Note that the following were agreed upon by the team on Yesterdays meeting
 as well.

- This election will see the selection of five members of WMKE, by
secret ballot, to the board of the Kenyan Chapter of Wikimedia by the
voting members, and after which the selected five will decide on who will
