Can I disagree with Andrew's email? This sort of thing's best done  
collaboratively, rather than coming from a single person, and that's  
what a wiki's best at.

I've just set up a proposals page at:

Please could people go there to submit ideas, flesh them out and  
volunteer for things that look interesting? There's a rough template  
on there for how a proposal should probably look, but there's no  
formal process involved. If you can't think of anything, then there's  
plenty of ideas at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Projects/Ideas .

Unfortunately, the Board is pretty busy at the moment organising the
AGM and related matters, so we don't really have the time to organise
anything on this by the deadline. However, if anyone in the community
is interested and able to put together a proposal for a project, we
have some time set aside next Tuesday to consider it.

All we need is a brief summary covering things like:

- the benefits of the project
- the funding requirements
- any other sources of funding
- the workload requirements (and who will be fulfilling this!)
- how the project will be organised
- whether its been done in the past and experiences gained

Getting the kids editing themselves might be a good thing.

Interactive whiteboards are becoming pretty standard in schools
nowadays. I don't think a laptop is necessary.

I think many Wikimedians would be willing to do it for free. Paying
people to do it is a bit of a luxury, that cannot be afforded yet
don't you think?

Schools have very limited funds, I think they would be far more
interested in having us visit if we paid for it ourselves.

I think pretty much all schools can supply the necessary hardware.
Putting together visual aids and whatever else is required can
probably be done by volunteers.

If we have the money, there is no reason we can't pay people, but I
would expect we can get enough volunteers. We could probably throw in

If you're interested in going to schools, then you may find that the  
schools are willing to cover the travel costs etc. in exchange for a  
good educational session.

Something else to factor in, though, is the development of the  
session content and any necessary materials. That can of course be  
done on a volunteer basis, but it all depends on how ambitious the  
sessions are, and whether e.g. a laptop and/or a projector needs to  
be purchased (although nowadays most schools can provide those, I  
guess).

Also, would the wikimedians going be paid for their time, or would  
they have to volunteer it? If you pay for their time, then you tend  
to get a lot more people interested in doing a session...

That depends on to who we get to volunteer. I guess we can choose the
initial schools according to where we have volunteers, and probably
halve the cost per school. Later schools may end up costing more,
since we don't want to concentrate too much on schools in just a few
areas.

I was thinking 5 as a starting point to see how it goes. For all we
know it might not work and it's all a waste of time and money (I think
that's unlikely, but really I can only guess). We'll know either way
after the first 5. Perhaps we should see if we can get £750 for the
first 5 with the option of another £1500 for 10 more if they go well.
After that, we'll hopefully have out own funds to continue (and we
could acquire sponsorship from Becta or similar - if we have a few
schools willing to say how brilliant we were, it shouldn't be
difficult to get funding).

and two local wikipedians at much less. For example an offpeak travel
card in london costs 7 odd quid. So by choosing Londoners to visit the
London schools costs would be cut considerably. I'm pretty sure the
same could be said for other towns.

Of course 5 schools is paltry. Upping it to 15 would easily up the
numbers to a reasonable amount.

Pretty much everyone on our list of ideas, I guess... We should choose
something specific, though! Going into schools to promote Wikipedia
and show how to use it (and the other projects, I guess) might be a
good place to start (we could try and get journalists to turn up too
so we can spread the word of our existence). The only real cost for
that is travel - picking some numbers out of thin air, if we say we
want visit 5 schools, with a team of 3 going to each school, and it
costs £100 per person to get there, that comes to £1500, a reasonable
amount to ask for.
