[WISPA] Farewell and good luck to you all!!!

2013-02-01 Thread Dylan Bouterse
It is with a heavy heart I send this email to you all to let you know I am
moving on from my current employment and even this industry to the next step in
my career. I've been a part of this group for 8.5 years and I've enjoyed being
a part of the discussions (usually more passive) and observing and
participating in growing the community we all love. A large majority of you
I've probably never met, but we may have brushed shoulders at a WISPA shows, or
others. I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued
participation in this industry and I hope it continues to grow by leaps and
bounds. You are all an inspiration and example of what a grass roots
organization can do when determined and led by fantastic people.

The next step in my career is taking me to Raleigh (from Central Florida) into
a pre-sales solutions engineer position for data center products. I'm excited
for this next BIG step in life as it will be a BIG change for me, not only
professionally but personally as well.

If any of you want to keep in touch, please email me directly before next
Friday and I'll be happy share my personal email address with you.

Again, thank you to all of you and good luck in your future endeavors!

Subject: [WUG] FCC Adopts Wireless Backhaul Reform

The FCC today announced changes that make more licensed microwave spectrum
available for wireless backhaul use.

The FCC action makes additional point-to-point licensed spectrum available in
the 7 and 13 GHz bands. WISPA's FCC Comments supported this change.

WISPA also supported the use of adaptive modulation in these bands. The FCC
granted this as well.

One point that WISPA supported that was not approved by the FCC was allowing
point-to-multipoint "auxiliary stations" within this spectrum.

Finally, the FCC approved the use of 25 MHz channels in the 13 GHz band.
Channels in this band are full-duplex (one transmit channel paired with one
receive channel) so this is the equivalent of allowing 50-MHz channel widths.

The FCC will be issuing a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM) to
address the remaining unresolved issues such as allowing smaller antenna sizes
on these licensed links. WISPA has filed Comments supporting smaller antenna
sizes.

Questions are always welcomed.

I know this is a bit OT, but...

I'm looking for options for DNS redundancy. In a nutshell, we have two
datacenters in two different cities. We need to have some redundancy
for our publicly accessible servers. We do NOT want to do round-robin
DNS, and auto-failover options are either not available or too costly
at this time - we will make manual DNS changes as needed if our primary
datacenter goes down. I'm looking for some place that I can offers
either a virtual server, or that will do DNS hosting that is located in
a highly redundant facility. Prefer something on clustered servers in a
colo center, NOT in the Dallas metroplex. We want something totally
independent of our two current data centers.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

I believe more than half will pay the $500 year two which would more
than cover any losses due to the year 2 increase.

Now is it advantageous to have more members even if they don't want to

hurt our power in numbers?

And I'd gladly pay another $250 per year more, if everyone would,
and it guaranteed that WISPA would double their legal spending, for
twice the FCC lobbying effort. My only complaint is that we could be
doing more, if more money was collected to fund it.
I'd argue after 6+ years at it, even just to cover inflation, a
price increase of 3% per year is in line.
Even if dues were raised jsut a little to $350 principle, and $150
Associate, the increase would be substantial for the organization, but
almost unnoticed by the paying member. Just about anyone can afford an
extra $50-100 per year.
That combined with a target increase of 10% in membership
recruitment, it would add up.

I'd agree... $500-$1000 Dues might deter some people from staying
members or joining. But I'll never understand why a small increase in
dues has not been initiated. At minimum just to slowly test the waters
on what members would be OK with.

I can tell you, without a doubt, its impossible for a WISP not to
get $350 of value from this organization.
There is an arguement, why pay, if someone else will foot the bill.
But at WISPA, there is no one else to foot the bill.
Either members do it, or it doesn't get funded.

I hope that this year that both the board raises dues, and that
more general list participants step up to become paying members, and
join our fight to steer the FCC and Congress into better decissions for
our industry.

I know WISPA's voice has made a difference, even of the victory is
not clear. Even with NetNeutrality, some of us felt it was a loss and
WISPs were ignored. But in reality it was a victory because the rules
were not as restrictive as so many experts thought they would be.

What we need is EVERY small, local, grassroots WISP joining our
team. The smaller the member company the better. I dont want to tell the
world that we are made up of mostly big WISPs that each have a million
subs, incorrectly suggesting the bigger WISPs are the most relevent
ones. Instead, I want the world to know that WISPA is the voice for the
MILLION small WISP Providers across the country. (I'll settle for a 1000
:-)
But I KNOW we can do better than 300.

And heck, even being a 10year old isn't an excuse not to join as an
assoicate member. Most parents would pay $100/year for a Toontown
subscription. I cant imagine that a parent wouldn't JUMP at the
opportunity to pay $100 to steer their kid (from toontown) into a
learning opportunity to interact with experienced WISP CEOs on a full
membership list. Thats as good as any intern program.

And now for the full fledged WISP company... $250 is NOTHING! Just
think about everything that you can buy for $250. Some of us exect to
pay more than that for a nice dinner on the town or a pair of shoes.
$250 is Peanuts comparatively to what similar associations charge. I'm
pretty sure WISPA should go into the guinees book of World record as the
assoication with the lowest Dues of all time. Id argue that if someone
cant justify $250 represent the intereests of their business and
liveihood, should they even be in this business? And even then, I'd
argue, if money is that tight, even more of a reason to join WISPA, to
get more bank f

Re: [WISPA] Centurylink bandwidth

2011-01-26 Thread Dylan Bouterse
We've had various CL (was Embarq) upstreams out of our more rural data
facility for 6+ years now. We started with T1s, went to ATM, upgraded to
Fiber and we've recently moved on to a different layer 2 provider to
peer with Level3. We were fortunate enough to have that option. During
our experience with Embarq/CL we had a host of issues from basic
outages/cuts to capacity issues. I think their issues are going to be
more regional than global though. My issues in Central Florida likely
wouldn't be the same issues somebody might have in other areas.

I'm thinking of multi-homing with Centurylink as a second provider. Is
this a pretty good performing network? I read the following link,
which gave me concerns, but I'm not sure if this only effects DSL
customers or wholesale customers also.

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/CenturyLinks-Network-Is-Choking-11242

I have a 20Mbit DS3 circuit with ACC Business. Bandwidth is maxing out
way too much. They want too much money to upgrade to the full DS3. I
have just over a year left on the contract. Centurylink can provide a
full DS3. Because IPv4 addresses about to run out, I thought it would
be good to multi-home, run BGP and get our own IP space from ARIN.

Any feedback on how your centurylink circuits perform would be great.

Thanks,
Roger

We have been on the pay-for Zimbra solution for a couple of years now
and are very happy with it. It's stable, offers a very nice web
interface, and the "upgrade" to the collaboration product is above and
beyond anything I've used before, including an Outlook/Exchange
environment. The search capabilities are also much advanced to other
solutions I've seen. It makes organizing and finding emails in a *many

Last Wednesday, March 31, the WISPA FCC Committee assisted by the WISPA
Promotions Committee met with top managers of the FCC Office of
Engineering and Technology (OET) at FCC Headquarters in Washington D.C.
to discuss the status of WISPA's TV Whitespaces filings.

The following Members represented WISPA. Ryan Spott, Alex Phillips, John
Scriver, and Jack Unger. The WISPA Team was assisted by Steve Coran of
Rini/Coran LLC in Washington.

All Team Members made valuable contributions to the effort and we all
feel that the meeting went well. Our goal was to ask the FCC take
favorable action soon on WISPA's Petitions to adjust the TV Whitespace
rules by making corrections to several problem areas, thereby making
WISP use of the Whitespaces more practical and more successful.

I'm attaching a more detailed report (.doc file) and also the official
written filing (PDF) that WISPA is required to make after every meeting
with the FCC. A copy of our FCC PowerPoint presentation is also required
to be part of our written filing. To easily view our presentation,
please rotate the attached PDF clockwise 90 degrees in your Adobe Reader

Your questions and constructive suggestions are always welcome.

Re: [WISPA] FCC Enforcements

2010-03-12 Thread Dylan Bouterse
One of the reports said 5.61GHz but I'd rather not assume that's what
they all operate at. Is there a way to find out or somebody to contact?

The FAA and NTIA want all outdoor operators to 1) verify if within 35
km, 2) if within 35 km, register your equipment and contact information
in a (voluntary) database so they know who to contact if there is an
interference problem, and 3) use channels that are more than 30 MHz away
from the single-frequency that the nearby TDWR uses.

All these enforcement actions were taken because of interference with

Lessons I get from them...

1) Stay off the 5.4GHz band
2) Keep your EIRP down
3) Check your installations for out of band emissions.

Re: [WISPA] iPhone ssh app

2010-03-12 Thread Dylan Bouterse
Other than being able to put paid apps on a jailbroken iPhone, my
favorite app is Backgrounder. It comes in handy soo much. If you don't
know what it does, you hold the home button when you're in an app and it
puts the app in the background so it will keep running. To actually
quite the app you go into it again, hold the home button and it will
close the proc. You can tell an app is running in the background because
it will have a little black circle on the icon. Very useful app. Also
iStat to free up memory occasionally. I dig the tethering when I'm out
and about.

Yeah, I haven't found tethering to make all that much sense either. My
gf has her iPhone jail broken, but honestly, I think she does it just
because she can...I haven't seen her do anything with it that actually
mattered. I haven't had a problem doing anything I needed (or wanted) to
do without jail breaking.

I also have a Droid at the moment, but damn, I'll tell you, it's a
annoying as hell in comparison. And I really hate the little feedback
vibration every time I touch one of the permanent keys (maybe that can
be turned off-I haven't taken the time to delve too much into the
options yet). I'll keep using it for a few more days but so far it
doesn't compare, even though Verizon's 3G coverage IS a little but
broader out this way (but, it's not as much broader as I'd thought it
was supposed to be).

However, if I didn't have the iPhone as an option, I'd probably love the
Droid. Sure beats what I used to use, even if it doesn't quite meet (for
me) the iPhone standards. As always with this kind of thing, I'm sure
YMMV.

In looking at Clear's web site, they have a green for areas that are

quickly they expect to fill that coverage? How quickly they'll expand

You're wanting to go on a family vacation? I thought this was to be a WISP
conference. Like, for WISP operators.
I, personally, have no intention of spending that much for airline tickets,
and going to play with Mickey Mouse while I'm at a conference.

I suggest you consult a patent and trademark attorney. I doubt that
there are any on this list. :-(

Not so much. Maybe some similarities, but no. Juniper has a Cisco config
translator that is supposed to take an existing Cisco config and
translate into Juniper speak, like I needed to explain "config

I'm considering using one to replace an aging Cisco. The Cisco has been

[WISPA] [Board Approved] 60 miles in 3 days! Everyone Deserves a Lifetime!

2009-08-10 Thread Dylan Bouterse
Before I get started with my cause and reason for sending this email I
want to apologize if this email is deemed inappropriate for this list. I
feel like over the years of being a member of WISPA and this list I have
come to appreciate each of you as a type of online family member so I
hope I do not offend or waste any of your time. I asked the WISPA board
for permission before sending this email and I truly appreciate their
consideration and thoughtfulness in allowing me to post this completely
unrelated list topic. I also wanted to give each of you a chance to join
in this cause as many of you or friends and family unfortunately may
have been touch personally by this disease.

My wife and her best friend Kim walked the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
3-day 60 mile walk in 2002 when Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer and
fighting the disease. She was in remission for almost 5 years when she
was diagnosed again. Kimberly Teems Marques lost her life in May of 2008
at the age of 42.

Last October my wife Gayle and 5 other friends and family walked the
Tampa Breast Cancer 3-day again, in her memory as Team Kimpossible. I
spent the weekend in Tampa cheering them on the entire way. The event
was so inspirational in it's cause, magnitude, and the walkers' sheer
passion that I felt compelled to participate as a walker this year.
Aside from the challenge of walking 60 miles in 3-days, each walker is
required to raise $2300 in order to walk. I have been funneling most of
my contacts to my wife's fund raising efforts since she is much more
connected to this than I am, and as a result, I am going to be
struggling to raise my $2300. What I don't raise of the $2300 comes out
of my pocket. The motivation for doing this is far greater than the risk
of not raising all the funds so I am not giving up! J

Some of you may be touched and motivated to make a monetary donation to
our effort. If so, there is a link in the signature of my email and
every $1 is greatly appreciated. Many of you have websites and or your
own audience via Social Network sites. Helping us spread the word and
cause via those outlets would also be greatly appreciated. We are trying
to attract sponsors for fundraising events, raffle prizes etc and as you
well know, the more traffic we can show, the better our justification
for sponsorship. More information on how to help us on Facebook or your
website can be found via the http://continuekimsfight.com
site. See the right hand column link for
"Spread the Word."

Thank you all very much for your time.

If you respond to this email, to prevent any further off-topic emails to
the list, please reply to me directly. I feel I am stretching the list
etiquette as it is sending this.

Thank you all,

Dylan

They will likely require an engineering study be conducted then they may
ask for operational guidelines to be established.

www.spectrumgenie.com may be useful for finding who the earth station
owner is.

As for how to address the official permission I would think a letter of
approval from them would suffice but someone else may have better
feedback.

Subject: [WISPA] 3.65 earth station contacts

I am now licensed for 3.65, but I have to get permission from an earth
station (Andover ME), as I'm just inside it's 150km radius.

The PDF showing the list of earth stations and exclusion zones looks
useful,
but is really just the start of a goose chase.

The other ISPs in the states surrounding the earth station either have
no 3.65
links registered, or the links fall outside of the zone. Had there been
an ISP
nearby that had gone through this, I would have checked with them.

The call signs located at Andover when you go to register a location, or

reference the PDF listing are not in the FCC ULS database. They are
apparently
FCC international bureau issued call signs and IB does not have a
searchable
online database and did not return my phone call.

I can't find anything in the chamber of commerce business directory for
Andover, the switchboard yellow pages for andover.

The Andover earth station is owned by MCI/Verizon and I get the usually
helpless script followers on the other end of the line, "Sir, we just
open up
trouble tickets", or "try calling this number" in really poor english.

Has anyone else been through this? How do I get the information needed
to
request an agreement?

Thanks!

[WISPA] SLA and guaranteed bandwidth

2009-04-02 Thread Dylan Bouterse
For those of you that offer business class Internet and have customers
that hold you to the speed you sell them, do you have any language in
your SLA that protects the customer for those bandwidth rates? We have
language that reimburses for outages but nothing specific to QOS or
guaranteed bandwidth. We have always operated that way, just haven't had
it in writing. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had the same problem! How can they have some of the error checking
they have, and not accept 0s in fields??? I'm sorry for not mentioning
that when I wrote my email. I was still kind of hot from figuring that
out when I wrote it too.

ARGH!

I was late (even by pacific time, I wonder if they wait until Hawaii

I spent nearly two hours trying to figure out vague errors I was getting
on the final submission.
This Submission could not be accepted. Some of the totals computed from

Turns out they don't like ZEROS in any of the fields on the summary

A 25pr armored outdoor CAT5 cable is equivalent to running 6 standard
CAT5 runs.

Run the 25pr to a NEMA4 Hammond enclosure or equivalent and breakout the
cable into a patch panel or punch down block. From there then run
individual outdoor armored CAT5 to your equipment.

Attached is a picture of an example from 2004 or 2005 of what I'm
talking about. Since this installation we've gone to a 12 port RJ45
vertical panel rather than the punch down block. Bottom side of the run
is simply punched down into a patch panel.

This picture unfortunately shows an incorrect 25pr color code. For the
correct color code look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25-pair_color_code

Brad

Hi guys,

I am thinking of installing Ethernet junction boxes on my towers (top
and bottom). The idea is to install a larger number of runs up the tower
and run shorter runs from the box to the radios. The same at the bottom
from the patch panel to the equipment/arrestors etc.

Is anyone doing this? What kink of (water proof) boxes do you use and do
you use a multiple CAT5 cables or do you run 48 or 96 pair?

IMO stay as far away from remote-backup.com's product as possible. We
bought into their front and it turned out to be a very unrefined product
that was cumbersome to install on the customer side and their support
was practically non-existent. I've heard of other people having success
with RBS but we dropped it and wrote off our losses after much
frustration.

I'm looking at remote-backup.com. It seems to be what I'm looking for,
but I'd like to know what other, similar options are out there.

It must not be cumbersome for either myself or the client.
It must have encryption at all levels (transport and storage).
It must have sold online backup in mind, not an enterprise backup
program.
It must work on Windows clients, hopefully Linux clients too.

That AS was sending corrupted AS PATHs, which among other things has
been causing significant amounts of route flaps due to Cisco bug
CSCdr54230. Ciscos effected are losing their BGP session when they
encounter the AS PATH. Upstreams like us have busy routers because of
all the flaps.

The community is filtering the AS right now pending resolution.

One of my upstreams found this after I called in the issue (I'm sure
they were already aware of it) and filtered the AS out. I only had an
issue with one of my routers as it is hobbling along with full routes

Thanks for the heads up guys!

Contact at Crown is Grant Childers in Indianapolis.

He is good to work with, but I will avoid Crown Castles towers like the

Plus specific climbers required. Just a pain in general.

Re: [WISPA] Billing and process management system

2008-12-03 Thread Dylan Bouterse
We have been using Plat for years and I used it at a company I worked at
waay back for years (starting in '98). I like Plat, but we are
considering an alternative for a few reasons.

MSSQL support only
Client is Windows only
Provisioning is fired off from the client, not a backend script
Complicated to customize
With that said, Plat is also very flexible which is probably why it is
complicated. I am not a SQL guy so I'm sure somebody with more knowledge
of SQL would disagree?

Maybe my 2 cents is helpful.

Ok, this was freaky. I actually had a response from my American Tower

Make sure you're getting more than 256MB of RAM if you're doing full
routes to 2 different peers. The GSRs can be really expensive to upgrade
if they don't already have what you need.

Re: [WISPA] Tower Climber Salary (insurance, etc.)

2008-07-21 Thread Dylan Bouterse
If I could split off this topic to something very related. What
insurance/workers comp are being held to legally employ climbers? I'm
assuming two climbers minimum are on staff? We are getting to the point
where it would benefit us to have our own climbers but the decision
makers are intimidated by the logistics of keeping such a high risk
position on payroll. Suggestions?

Re: [WISPA] Radio Vendor Suggestions

2008-04-25 Thread Dylan Bouterse
Biggest disadvantage to the PTP500 is that the surge suppression is
built in unlike all other Moto PTP (formerly Orthogon) models where the
"transector" or surge arrestor is external. With the 500 model if you
blow the surge suppression you are out a radio until you can get Moto to
replace it (as I understand it). Love the PTP series though. That is all
we use for our backhauls.

Ohh, well then take a look at the new motorola PTP500,

It can go up to 105 Mbps in a 15 mhz channel, pps processing is over 10k
pps
Multiple units can be synced with gps for spectrum reuse, it would auto
select the cleanest channel to operate in and many other goodies

This are the best backhaul radios out there IMHO

In essence we do the same except we don't really need it broken down per
customer- just import over to QuickBooks the totals for the different
service types sold and then total deposits against that- any details
about customer payments are in Platypus so we don't need to give
customer service access to QuickBooks. So I guess the little bit of data
we do manually each month is not that big a deal. Why do you need to
move all that data from Platypus to QuickBooks anyhow?

We have been using it and have a manual batch export from Plat to
QuickBooks for the deposit but it doesn't break down per customer or

It was mentioned back during the CALEA hype that some had considered or
did add a CALEA fee on their Internet Service bills. I'm curious if this
was done and if it was successful (without upsetting customers or
creating too many billing inquiries). Feel free to reply off list if you

Hey folks,

I am looking for some comments on IP KVM switches. The good, the bad,
the
ugly would be fine. Preferred models and brands would be great if you
have
some experience with them would be particularly helpful. I am looking
for a
minimum 12 port, but 16 ports would be real nice and leave me a little
room.

Any comments are welcomed :)

Thanks
Mac

RE: [WISPA] iPhone

2007-10-03 Thread Dylan Bouterse
I have a Treo 700W for work and I got an iPhone day one they came out. I have
to say I do not like using my Treo anymore and I use my iPhone for as much as
possible. It does miss some important buisness apps like Active Sync to
Exchange and the ability to open MS Office app documents but that is all but a
software update away.

Travis, no you will not be able to update to 1.1.1 but update to 1.0.2 and go
to http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ and install the Apple iphone installer. It
really unlocks the potential of the phone! You get a package manager type app
that allows you to add sources and get all kinds of new apps, themes, sounds.
Install the BSD subsystem and you can SSH into your iPhone, use terminal to SSH
to whatever.

It's really the coolest thing around. I don't see any other phone manufacturer
coming anywhere close to the iPhone for years. No, the iPhone doesn't have it
allyet...but it has so much more and does it so much better then any other
device.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Depends who is Hosting the PBX and what the PBX is.
Broadsoft is the industry leader in fully featured softswitchs. There
are a few VoIP Providers that have been able to fully utilize the power
of Asterisk for a Hosted PBX solution.
The pros are that Hosted PBX has built in disaster recovery as long as
the NOC where the PBX resides is disaster prepared.
The cons are that if the data circuit goes, then the office is down for
the day. Hosted PBX does require more bandwidth as voicemail, music on
hold, and inter-office calls are streaming between the PBX and the
offices on your network.

shelling out $100 or so for a good switch makes sense, I am willing to

RE: [WISPA] Redundant Backhaul Links

2006-01-02 Thread Dylan Bouterse
If you're using all Cisco gear at your POPs EIGRP would be a better option
since you can set bandwidth on the backhauls. Say for instance you may have
your main backhaul with a capacity of 20MB and the backup at 10MB. EIGRP will
make it's routing and load balancing decisions based on the line speed set for
that interface. My 2 cents.

OSPF is certainly the best bet for this scenario. With OSPF, you
will have the self-healing you are looking for. You don't HAVE to
have a redundant path to every pop, but doing so would obviously
give you a more resiliant network. I sent you an email offlist as
well.
