RE: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
I'm guessing Patrick went over the 25 user stand alone base station that will retail for $2,595. This will be an upgradeable version that you can start a POP with, recover some costs, then upgrade when the time comes and you get close to the 25 subscriber attachments. The reason I did not post details on the List, is that the pricing and program is a deal designed and offered ONLY to WISPs, and I was not sure what part of it was suppsoed to be confidential or Open to disclose. The program is for the existing VL product line, the one you always wanted to buy, but thought you could never afford. There are volume commits involved, but they are VERY minimal. The Plan is not just about pricing, it also includes additonal support for WISPs via online content and such. When you learn about it, you will see why I was so excited. This program is something that never could have happened without someone like Patrick Leary behind it, who fully understands the needs of WISPs, and went to bat for us. What I liked about the program is that it came from the principle of how can they help us, help ourselves as a group, and ultimately reach higher volume of product deployment (For mutual benefit). Understand that this is Best of Breed product, at the top of the pyramid, so sod course set realistic expectations that their is no justification for the program to compete against $99 CB3 boxes. But it now allows a WISP to make decisions based on whether the features and design of the product is the best product for the job, rather than having to make selection based on price. It allows a WISP to step up their operations a couple notches, and puts FCC certified / carrier class gear within their reach. Disclaimer: The fact that I am impressed by the Alvarion program, and without a doubt will be participating in this program personally, does not take away the value that other manufacturer's products may also deliver. But I now can make my decissions based on the merit of the individual product lines, for the appropriate locations. And this will come with the same 74% of MSRP as the CPE radios correct :) What about the cost to then upgrade it to a full blown base station? RE: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
Actually, the main intent of the AU-S is to permit profitable VL deployment even in the smallest of towns where the expectations are that'd you not be able to sign more than a handful of subscribers per AU. For sure, some WISPs will choose to use the AU-S as a method of incrementalizing their infrastructure, which is fine too. We want WISPs to pay for what they need, when they need it. Re: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
YEP. That was a key point not mentioned in the Commnet brief. The lower cost APs, will allow a WISP to expand their network footprint quicker, without waiting on a long sector ROI first. The idea is not to shaft Alvarion out of their end game revenue that they deserve, as a WISPs that uses thateir gear for a fully populated network, can well justifiy its cost. And more likely they will get there, if they have quality gear to help them on their way. This program is a program to help a WISP grow, and manage their costs propoirtional to their received revenue, not their unreached potential. Its that mentality that I liked in the program. RE: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!! very attractive rural model
BTW, we should note that on the AU-S, the capacity is not constrained since it supports the full 32+mbps net from the start. It is only limited in terms of attachments, supporting up to 25 connections of the 3 or 6Mbps CPEs. We've got lots of rural customers for whom this is what was requested. Those 25 six mbps or 3mbps subs will be flying though. This model, assuming you joined the AlvarionCOMNET and if you had 25 subs on each of three sectors on one cell would result in an infrastructure PLUS CPE payback of less than 9 months assuming only a $39.95/month subscriber fee. So, including a truck roll, you could get a 1 year or less payback off $39.95/month fees providing true 3mbps down/2mbps up. And you could do this with top of the line gear that will result in much improved operations and MUCH higher equity value of the network should you ever want to sell. Hey Brad, I've already looked at it briefly and will definately look into it a little further, pretty cool. However, based on deploying many different systems from wifi to CDMA, I've come to one conclusion. If it doesn't have GPS sync, I don't even want to touch it! :-) Tell me this, will the VL product be uprgadeable to co-exist with any future 802.16d/e product releases? Paul, Patrick said they will make an announcement. We don't feel that it is WISPA's place to make this public announcement until it is sent to us for dispersal. I'm sure there are legal ramifications that could come from pre-announcement releases. I strongly advise those who have been privy to the initial release at ISPCON to refrain from sending it to the list. Please be patient as Patrick works on California time and it is still morning out there. Re: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
In a nut shell, Patrick (yes Patrick) has come up with a program specifically aimed at the WISPs. We'll get volume discounts of over 70% (can't remember the exact number) with purchases of a whopping 25 units per QUARTER. There are additional discounts that add to this depending upon how many WISPs overall purchase the gear. Very cool stuff. I saw the program and said Hell, *I* can do that! I got a big grin out of Patrick with that one. hehehehe It'll take a while for us to install enough APs to drive that kind of volume for me. I do more volume than that as it is, but I'll not be putting VL at all 20 tower sites over night. Certainly something to think about for our bigger sites though. I really like this program. Finally I don't feel like my business is being used to subsidize the bigger (read telco) players. My hope is that this program will set a precedent in the market place. We may be small but we're growing, fast. There were more 1000 and up WISPs at ISPCon than you could shake a stick at. Very cool. Now we have to wait and see if Alvarion can stick with this program for the next 3 years so that the market has time to install the base stations needed to really make this new model shine. Thanks again Patrick. Your loyalty to our industry segment is much appreciated! It was great to see ya. The beard really does have to go though! Re: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
Sorry, I have not responded sooner guy, but I kept missing opportunities to connect to the Internet. Alvarion is not the appropriate product for all my needs, but I know where I do need it, and I've been waiting for this day for that opportunity. RE: [WISPA] Alvarion is Back!!!
On Monday morning a mail will hit the WISPA list (sent via WISPA's ad mechanism, not as a post) that will have a letter from me. Within that will be a link to a jump page where you can get access to the detailed pdf. This version of pdf will have more price details than the one distributed at the WISPA meeting, so those 30 or so of you that received a hard copy the other night may want to pull down the other one. Everything will be ready and waiting.
