[zones-discuss] installing new os in zone

2006-07-17 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

Ordinarily to  remove a zone, it says to:
--
Step1: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX halt
Step2: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX uninstall
Step3: zonecfg -z ps-eng6-zoneX delete

but I just want to lay down a new OS in my zone.
Can I just do it this way (skipping deleting the zone)?:
Step1: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX halt
Step2: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX uninstall
Step3: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX install
Step4: zoneadm -z ps-eng6-zoneX boot

Thanks,
Russ

What I'd really like is to be able to "flash archive" and create a
"template" zone.
And then pull it out (flash a zone) and have a fresh zone to work with.

Yes, although I suggest checking the status of the zone after the 'uninstall'. It
should be 'configured'. Any other status may indicate failure of the
uninstallation process.

Just curious: how is this valuable? 'Delete' and 'zonecfg' are very lightweight
steps.

What if I were to:
install a zone.  And before installing any apps in it, I
tar -cf MyCleanZone.tar   /export/zone2

When I need to wipe out my test setups, I just untar it.

[zones-discuss] OS update and zones question

2007-02-19 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

Zones gurus,

Got this note from our lab tech...
In response to the lab tech's question would we just halt and uninstall the zone, but not "delete" it?
Would that allow us to restore it after the installation upgrade?

Thanks,
Russ

It looks like the upgrade failed. I had to upgrade the
firmware but because of that I
need to get a newer version of the OS installed for the system to work
right. The
problem seems to be the zones setup. They are causing a package to fail
during the
install so the install is backed out.

The only thing I can suggest is for you to remove the zones you
configured to make
the system not know about them. I'm not saying delete the zones, but
just make the
system not know of them so the upgrade can work without the condition
that the
upgrade work around the zones.

Issue Type: Installation
Synopsis : request to upgrade Solaris 10 from U2 to U3

Description :
have the OS on ps-niagara1 upgraded from U2 to U3.
(not a fresh install - we have software installed in zones on the
machine).

[zones-discuss] zonemgr question

2007-07-06 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

I'm trying to use the latest zonemgr...see script below.

Must the zonename as specified by "-n" be the hostname?
And if so, what is the purpose of specifying the hostname in "-I"?

I ran zonemgr as seen below and it failed to complete nicely.
It could not find the dns servers. and instructed me to zlogin and fix
things afterwards.

When I zlogin'd I ran hostname and it responded: "zone4", not
"ps-eng8-zone4"

So now I've run sys-unconfig and the zone is halted

As am I.

?
Thanks,
Russ

zonemgr-1.8.1 -a add -n zone4 -t s -z "/export2/zones" \

[zones-discuss] solved: zonemgr question

2007-07-06 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

I figured out my problems.
- 1. I left off the trailing slash. Thus it didn't get any network
config items.
- 2. Is this a zonemgr bug? It would not recognize the dns server
name in the comma delimited list:

When I changed:
-d "mf-usca19-12.red.iplanet.com,mf-usca15-13.red.iplanet.com" \
TO
-d "mf-usca19-12" \

it worked.

I think we went through this a couple of months ago, and all the interested

[zones-discuss] silent zone install?

Is there a way to make a zone installation totally silent?

I haven't used the "zonemgr" script before (can you give me a link?),

Re: [zones-discuss] silent zone install?

2007-08-28 Thread Russ Petruzzelli
Hello Huafeng Lu and zone-mgr script authors,

After several attempts, I have identified why the zonemgr script
(zonemgr-1.8.1.sh) is not finishing a silent OS installation for me.

zonemgr is in fact creating a sysidcfg file. However there is one line
that it burps on...

  name_service=DNS {domain_name=red.iplanet.com
name_server=mf-usca19-12}

This is what works for me in SWAN...

  name_service=NIS {domain_name=red.iplanet.com
name_server=mf-usca19-12(192.18.56.149)}

I'm not sure how to modify the script to get it to use NIS rather than
DNS, and to put the name-server's IP on the line.
Is there maybe something else that will allow "DNS" to work in the
script? For instance, if /etc/hosts had the nameserver's entry hostname/IP?

Thanks,
Russ

If I'm a customer who already has update 2 or 3, how am I supposed to

What's the status of svc:/network/shell:default in that zone?

Did you perhaps configure zone2 and forget to go through sysid?

Re: [zones-discuss] unable to rsh into zone2

2007-09-26 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

Hi Lana,

I also notice in your command you are attempting rsh by root.
It is a big security risk, but you must comment out the CONSOLE line in
/etc/default/login to allow root logins via rsh.

[zones-discuss] Has anybody seen this problem?...sparse/whole root identification with pkgcond

2008-04-18 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

I am running pkgcond in a whole-root, nonglobal zone:
It seems the exit status of these commands is not consistent:
(Is not a "1" false, and a "0" true?)
Either way these command don't jive

platform:
SunOS r54s05-zone-01 5.10 Generic_127112-08 i86pc i386 i86pc
/etc/release: Solaris 10 8/07 s10x_u4wos_12b X86

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: /usr/bin/pkgcond -n is_nonglobal_zone
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: echo $?
1 << wrong
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: /usr/bin/pkgcond -n is_global_zone
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: echo $?
0 << wrong
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: /usr/bin/pkgcond -n is_sparse_root_nonglobal_zone
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: echo $?
1 << correct
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: /usr/bin/pkgcond -n is_whole_root_nonglobal_zone
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: echo $?
0 << correct

If someone can try this on an opensolaris zone. I'm on a
non-openSolaris system.

Thanks,
Russ

[zones-discuss] how to configure port listening in a zone?

2008-08-19 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

I have a glassfish webserver running in my Solaris 10 zone.
It will not respond to remote jmxrmi requests on port 8686.

If I connect locally with (for instance) jconsole it works fine.

I believe it is somehow related to being in a zone. Because
snoop -p 8686 from my zone...
tells me, "no network interface devices found."

   [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ifconfig -a
   lo0:1: flags=2001000849
   mtu 8232 index 1
   inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff00
   bge0:1: flags=1000843 mtu 1500
   index 2
   inet 10.5.185.103 netmask fc00 broadcast 10.5.187.255

Is there something I can configure to do this?

Thanks,
Russ

2008-08-19 Thread Russ Petruzzelli
I snooped from the global zone and could see a request and response.
I can ping. I can ssh into the zone.

Just a sec ... I found the problem. It is not a zones issue...

In my domain.xml for the webserver, I had "security-enabled" set to
"true".

It works with "false"
   auth-realm-name="admin-realm" enabled="true" name="system" port="8686"
protocol="rmi_jrmp" security-enabled="false">

Could just be a network config/routing issue. Can you ping 10.5.185.103?
Can you access other network services, like ssh?

Re: [zones-discuss] DVD/CD burning in a Non Global Zone

2008-11-26 Thread Russ Petruzzelli

You may find that 6712352 is a related
bug (on sparc). (not having to do with non-global zones per se)
Once you burn a CD/DVD you can't mount it properly.
    workaround:
   svcadm disable -t volfs
then mount dvd manually with mount command.

Took me forever to find the cause of the problem.

Russ
