It might be better if the whole zope project is handed over to somebody willing
to move it forward.

It’s pretty obvious the various parts that make up the community like mailing
lists, website, forums etc have been dead or dying for a long time.

Will Zope ever get back to 2005-2006 levels…? See :

The whole Zope project is as open as an open-source project can be.

It’s not that Zope isn’t as open source as it can be, it’s that anyone building
a new application will not use Zope, which is clearly a problem for longevity
since in another 3 years there will be even less people using Zope as more and
more legacy applications get rewritten.

Personally we are very embedded with Zope 2.11. It’s excellent for what we are
using it for and we are incredibly grateful of the community that built that
product over the last 10 years. We use Zope in a very simple way for just
holding python code, handling roles and connecting out to a Postgres DB but
there are other frameworks which would do the same thing in a leaner way now.
Still, we are not looking to rewrite because it does what we need well,
although the version control is more hassle than it should be.

 What is the problem here?

The problem is how to attract new developers to rebuild a Zope fit for life
from 2015+. That would mean making the framework more modern in every sense but
still retaining the features that made Zope great in the past like excellent
security handling and a quick development cycle. This is not an easy task and
would probably involve some rebranding as the Zope name is now associated with
an old framework.

The decade of the large application servers and frameworks is over.

Possibly but Zope could have moved with the times and evolved with the momentum
it had 5 years ago instead of being usurped by frameworks like Django and
Turbogears which any python dev would choose over Zope in a heartbeat these
days if they wanted to build a scalable application. This is what needs to be
addressed - or is it your opinion that Zope will die and there’s nothing we can
do about it? That seems a shame to me.

Zope lives as long as someone uses it (Plone uses it).

Plone is going the same way of declining usage and development over the last
3-5 years.

 Apart from that:
the project live from the contributions and contributors. The Zope
world is kind of a legacy and it is unlikely at this will change.
Keep it alive somehow to the point as you need by taking over
responsibility. Do you step up for a particular task?

Good response:) No I don’t step up right now, too busy with our own codebase.
But we would love to take the project forward in the future when we are a
bigger company.

Is the Zope 4 project still alive that was talked about in 2011?

My concerns are solely around Zope moving forward over the next few years and
how we can best achieve a community feel around Zope - or a deviate of Zope

I still get the zope.com site here when trying to reach www.zope.org
(might be a cached redirect in my browser though)

Hello everybody,

it seems that currently all HTTP requests to www.zope.org and

I find it hard to believe that this is a desired behavior...

But if yes, where can Zope itself and Zope products be downloaded? The
Zope.com site contains tons of nice eye-candy and marketing-yadayada but
no resources for developers whatsoever.

[Zope] zope.org downtime

2001-01-31 Thread ethan mindlace fremen

Zopatistas,

Zope.org has suffered a disk failure that evidently our raid array did not
correctly recover from.

We should be back up shortly in "degraded" mode.

I am going to be working on changing things around so that the zeo clients
to continue operating in read-only mode even if the storage/ staging server
goes down.

Once replicated storage comes about, this single point of failure will go
away.

Thanks for your understanding,

[Zope] Zope.Org: Not a good example...

2000-12-02 Thread The Doctor What

I've been looking around for examples of certain objects and such.
One simple example is a URL object. Zope.Org *has* this object
(Link) and it is fairly nifty, even if it isn't documented (ie, it's
usage etc.) but I can't find the *source* for this object anywhere!

All I want is to be able to have a Link object on my Zope engine,
with possibly a minor change or two, but I can't find out where to
get it anyplace.

This isn't the only example. I have software that I want to
distribute, but I can't get the source for the Software
Product/Distribution objects either!

I can get the source for DTML Documents, but it doesn't do much
good if they make extensive use of objects that I can't get the
source for.

I would like to enter a plea for *someone* at DC/Zope.Org to fix
this situation!

BTW: I have a better view_source DTML Method:
http://docwhat.gerf.org:9673/view_source/view_source

Ciao!

2000-11-09 Thread Colin Leath

For the past hour and a half I have only once been able to get through to
zope.org.
lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo is accessible, however.
A zope.org-status mailing list might be helpful, like the egroups-status
list, since Zope work is so dependent on the site.

I've been trying to read product descriptions. Is that information
available anywhere else?

Second, I thought there was a searchable archive of the zope mailing
lists. I just found it in my
bookmarks: http://zope.nipltd.com/public/lists.html
but I was not able to find this link on the lists.zope.org url referenced
in the mailing list digests... the list manager might want to change that.

Third,
I'm trying to figure out ways of managing/developing with Zope from a
unix console, using text editors, text browsers and so on.
I have no doubt that others would rather not have to use a mouse and GUI
to work with Zope.
I have already found http://www.zope.org/Members/sf/zopeshell
But it says it does not work for 2.2

Could someone please point me to documentation about console-based zope
management? If it's easy to find on the zope site, I will find it when I
can get through again.

thanks,
Colin

My problem though with all these things is that the file you edit is not
automatically uploaded when you save it. Usually you always have to quit
the editor and do an ftp upload yourself as the ftp (or ZopeShell) always
work on a local copy of the file and do not notice if you save it (well, how
should they do it anyway ;-))
So some sort of ftp filesystem would be nice to have :)

cheers

[Zope] zope.org mistake

2000-11-01 Thread ethan mindlace fremen

Um...

I inadvertently deleted the Data.fs whilst compressing it. Then I
compounded my mistake by not remembering that the storage server still
had the inode open, and closed the storage server.

I have restored from the compressed version of the Data.fs, but it
appears that a day or so of information is missing.

Rest assured that I will not be so stupid in the future.

I just sent a message explaining what happened to this list.

I'm also curious about the zope.org site performance. Zope is said to
capable of a million hits per day on commodity hardware, yet zope.org
receives only about 20% of that on its busiest days. This would not be
remarkable except that the response times from zope.org seem to usually be
10 seconds or so. I am on a T-1 line and 13 hops and 80ms from the zope.org
 server.

My current tracking shows that zope.org is pretty snappy until the
server gets attacked from a bunch of spiders. Because zope.org has a
huge quantity of pages (500+MB of (packed) content and climbing), and
because objects get loaded into ram as they get accessed, accessing
*everything* on the site multiple times causes zope to load things in
out a lot, causing it to slow down.

IOW, if you have a zope running with, say, 100 mb of content (that's
2048 50 kb pages) on a box with, say 256mb of ram, and you have your
caching policy set very liberally, then you should be able to hit 30
requests per second, or 2.5 million hits per day.

Zope.org will be on hardware that stretches the notion of "commodity"
soon, but it will be sufficient such that all 500mb of our objects can
be floating about in ram if need be. This should improve our
performance drastically.

Hope that helps,

Yes Apache and caching adds a whole new layer of complexity.

But most simple Zope installations dont use it and for quick rough counts it
can be useful, of course its rare to be able to replace the log files in
terms of accuracy.

doesn't exactly work in favor for Zope when I try to show of Zope.org

 respond. Argh!

Zope.org is free as hell. Why don't you get creative and donate
something to the effort and stop bitching.

If you need to make pictures with words it means that you don't have a
grasp on basic reality and attempt to shuttle form into desire. It's
childish - sooo childish.

Here's a solution - why don't you find out if you can mirror the site
somehow.

Why is it so free? Do something about it!

Next time www.zope.org appears to be slow, try accessing www.codeit.com
as well since the two are hosted in the same location AFAIK. If there

I have to agree with Erik...

Sometimes (much of the time) it comes through just fine. But on some days
(and it does seem to last just the day) it's slower than a wet weekend.

Saying it works fine for you isn't really all that fair, since you are in the
same country.

What would be interesting to know is WHY it gets slow. If it really is
something beyond their control, perhaps mirror sites?

Have a better one,
Curtis.

As an example
I created a complete Timesheet tracking system for my (not so big) company
yesterday, using cabbie's TimeTracker (Timesheet) product.
It works fine, but I need to to some minor tweaks to it.
The kewl thing is that I spent 25 mins on it totally. 15 of those 25 mins
was spent on adding some style to the site. Nice colors and goodlooking
fonts.

If you have more than 25 mins to spend, do so on additional stuff and extra
features such as style and design.
Simple. Why do stuff you don't have to do, when some1 else's done it for
you?

I need to have n versions for various testing purposes: this is what got
me in trouble in the first place- I was packing to try to make room.
The pack makes a full backup of your data, so it needs about 1.75*n
space where n is the size of your current Data.fs

Also, (besides "upgrade to alpha"), what is the workaround for Data.fs
bigger than 2GB? Are there any plans to split it across multiple
files? (Once again, the PostgreSQL people recently added this -- database
files don't exceed 1GB, when the table gets that big it splits them
 across multiple files).

One solution is to have your Data.fs actually be split using mounted
databases, something I consider a sub-optimal solution. Another option
would be to store the entire zodb in a relational database, but as far
as I know none of the products that attempt to provide that are
full-featured.

The bottom line is that the OS should support the creation of very large
files. Note that any of the BSD variants, or Solaris for x86, or SCO
unix, all will let you have a ZODB larger than 2gb, assuming python was
compiled properly.

I have spent literally about 40 hours trying to get Linux to support
large files. While the code is integrated into kernels 2.3.27 and up,
something still isn't quite right because I cannot get python to support
large files although I can get c to create 17GB files using lseek().

Hope that helps,

Well, folks, zope.org is down again, because the site was packed without
 enough space on the device.
...
To keep this from happening again, we will be adding an additional 40gb
drive that should do us just fine until the Data.fs hits 2 GB.

This is a general problem for zope service providers and their users;
I wonder how we can resolve it ?

Related, though specific to Codeit users: I need to pack to avoid the
above, but fear the data-corrupting packing bugs which were fixed in
more recent versions of zope. Codeit, perhaps time for an upgrade ? At
least to 2.1.6 ?

Best regards

My experience is that CodeIt, in order not to surprise you with unexpected
upgrades, will upgrade your Zope server when you ask.

Zopatistas:

zope.org will be going down the morning of Friday the 14th during the
transition to zope 2.2. It should be no more than a 15 minute downtime.

In the mean time, if you want to hit http://www.zope.org:666/ to see if
it works, feel free!

Re: [Zope] Zope.org Hidden Stats

2000-06-08 Thread Tony McDonald

Hi all,
under /Software this is shown.

The machine is running RedHat 6.1. The Zope installation is a CVS
checkout with fairly conservative updating. The content is served
completely out of the Zope database. Apache is used as the web server
in front of Zope.org, using PCGI to integrate with the Zope server.
Soon we will migrate to using FastCGI.

Can someone please clarify something for me here. (I've been Zoping
for 15 months and *still* don't know the correct answer)

If you're running Zope from behind Apache/PCGI then you *have* to run
Zope single threaded. Am I correct?

Therefore, that implies that Zope org is not using ZServer to serve
up documents. Still correct?

If this is the case then I'm even more impressed, but would like to
ask why not use Ansers 'Apache/ZServer HowTo' and get the best of
both worlds?

TIA
Tone.

No, you r not! Yoy can run multithreading ZServer and connect Apache to
it via PCGI. There are two PCGI servers in Zope - single-threaded and
builtin (as a component) in ZServer.

Thanks for that Oleg,
Well you live and learn...

To the zope list,
I'm going to go really slowly here, as this is something that has
been bugging me for yonks! (I have read doc/WEBSERVER.txt ... again
and again).

1) Zope + Apache redirected to Zope.cgi with PCGI_PUBLISHER =
pcgi/pcgi_publisher.py = single threaded server. No ZServer activity.
Uses ZPublisher?

2) Zope + Apache redirected to Zope.cgi with PCGI_PUBLISHER =
ZServer/PCGIServer.py = ZServer based multi-threaded server. Implies
better throughput.

If I'm anywhere near close, can someone please point out any
resources that will show me how to get option (2) working?

Additionally, can I ask that if (2) *is* correct, then with the 2.2
release another script (w_zserver_pcgi.py ?) be released.

cheers,
tone

This is certainly true. Unfortunately, Microsoft has made it so that
anyone with a modicum of javascript skills can read *all* your cookies
(if you use IE on Windows):

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/05/11/173257mode=nested

Now, there may not be hugely deletrious effects resulting from this, but
until cookies are handled in a sane manner, it's probably inappropriate
for us to be putting the password there.

If you're using IE 5 or Mozilla (NS 6) you can always tell it to
remember what you've entered into the password field.

This link should show you all the cookies you have at www.zope.org:

Well, you only have to save one half of a pair. I would prefer you save
the password. The username I can remember :-)

Your username is publicly accessable from zope.org. With your password,
if there's any way I can inferr your username- let's say the webmaster
grabbed the information while you were posting a comment on
zopeisevil.org- they can now do whatever you could do.

More to the point, with redirection and javascript, they can even make
you do it. For zope.org membership as it is today, all they could do is
besmirch your good name in the community. In the future, as the things a
zope member can do expands, it could mess up more.

I will, however, look into other possibilities, like maybe your password
could be filled in server side, if some appropriate check can be made.

If you like, drop this issue in the Tracker, http://www.zope.org/Tracker
, so that you'll be updated when its status changes.

If you're using IE 5 or Mozilla (NS 6) you can always tell it to

Doesn't offer to save it for me on IE5. If it did, I wouldn't be asking.

Hmm. It harasses me about it all the time. Perhaps I'm using IE 5.5
(can't remember, I'm back in linux.)
