My apologies, Bill. I see you've already convinced yourself it doesn't apply because there is a ceiling in place. I guess that part about 1'-0" below the diffuser is not relevant because there's a drop ceiling in place, is that what you're telling me?

So the warmer air coming from the downward facing diffuser is more of a problem because there's a drop ceiling in place at the same level? Is that the argument?

IMHO the whole reference in Table 8.3.2.5.a, 1c is to the cylindrical
exposed diffuser seen in exposed ceiling situations like warehouses, fancy
"fake-tech" restaurants, boutiques, etc. IMHO the reference does not apply
to Light Hazard flat lay in acoustical tile ceiling HVAC diffusers which are
usually 2' Sq. and 2'-6" above the diffuser would be in the unsprinkled
plenum above the sprinkler. Right? Just nod yer head, nod, nod.

I always looked at it from the distance from the duct. Duct diameter in the
center of the tile. Then apply the distance dimension.

It is not clear to me that the reference to a diffuser there is to a lay-in
type in a light hazard flat tile ceiling. But even if it is, the definition
makes no sense: DOWNWARD DISCHARGE: "Cylinder with 1'-0" or less radius from
edge extending 1'-0" below and 2'-6" above"; "edge" of what?, "2'-6" above",
above what?
Hep me out here folks, I know it's Friday, but still.

Bill,
I would start with Table 8.3.2.5(a) and go from there.
Item 1(c) is for a diffuser.

We have an AHJ saying our center-of-tile recessed 155F sprinkler is too close to the HVAC supply diffuser in an A.T.C. (less than 2') I am

curious as to what section or paragraph in NFPA-13, 2002 references this requirement? I can't find it, maybe one of y'all can hep me?
