This concerns people inside Sun as well. I think in most cases it is not a proactive effort, it is just hard to remember to think in the open. I know when I do an ARC case, the last thing on my mind is whether I opened it up to the community or not. Well, not anymore, but you get my point. There can just be so much procedure to some of the stages that it is easy to follow the way you've been doing things for ever. My first OpenSolaris project was the In-Kernel Sharetab. That project was over almost as soon as it became open - it really feel into the camp above. The second OpenSolaris project was NFS Server in non-Global Zones. I tried to get the requirement docs done in a collaboration, but no one stepped up. The third OpenSolaris project was the Mirror Mount one. The design was finished before we opened it up. I think we posted bits before it shipped, not sure. The OpenSolaris project I am working on right now is pNFS. We've done 3 code drops of prototypes, we put design docs up on the site, etc. We work closely with other implementors and test with them. The final deliverable is a ways off and I still haven't seen much interaction from the community. My point is that even with someone who is very pro-OpenSolaris, the advanced warning is very iffy. Oh, we also did an exercise in the open on a wishlist. I know Paul Kasper is close to publishing the collected results. That could be an interesting discussion point. I don't know of all of the storage projects going on with Sun, I doubt I was too aware of the VSCAN one, but I can ask the people who do know to ask all of the groups to consider going open now and not later. _______________________________________________ storage-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/storage-discuss
