Cyril, Nigel & all,
You all raise very good points about projects that seem to appear from
the ether. If we (Sun) are really trying to be open, then it would be
appropriate to clue in the community. We are trying to be open, but as
Tom pointed out in his post we are still learning. While OpenSolaris is
almost 30 months old a number of the developers working in [Open]Solaris
have only been exposed to the open concepts for a few months. It may
seem odd to those watching opensolaris.org, but there are parts of Sun
that are still trying to figure out what "open" means. There is a change
happening both inside and outside Sun. Outside of Sun many community
members are trying to understand and influence the structure and
processes of OpenSolaris constitution and community. OpenSolaris is
really just an infant. The parents and child are prone to mistakes.
Open discussions like this one are the best way for all of us to learn
and grow. Many project teams are trying to find ways to release their
code to the open and other are trying to figure out how to do bigger
projects with the help of the community.
What can we all be doing better? How can we be helping each other?
Some questions I have:
* what other cool storage technologies (like SquashFS) live outside
of OpenSolaris? and who is willing to start a project to bring
them in?
* what technologies should Sun be working on in the storage space
(FYI a list is started at:
http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/OpenSolaris_Storage_Developer_Wish_List
-- thanks Paul & Tom)
* how can we work better in exchanging ideas?
I'm really interested in making this community strong and vibrant. There
is great stuff going on, we all help this community grow and thrive!
