Saint Paul Issues I like the idea of a broader focus for discussions, but I don't think it can be easily done with one email list. Too many topics.
There are software packages (php/mysql) that could be used to provide broader coverage, including such things as a links directory, picture sharing, multiple lists, newsletters, forums, blogs, logs, doglogs (not really) etc... I like the E-democracy concept, but I should say in advance that I have one critical objection to the way the lists are run. The E-democracy guidelines allow the moderators to issue warnings and judgements against individual subscribers, and do so completely out of public view. I have even been reprimanded in the past for bringing up the subject of how moderation should be done, because discussing how E-democracy is moderated is not a legitimate topic of e-democracy lists. ( Go figure...) I don't think that Democracy, or E-democracy, can be successfully maintained if some people have the power to restrict what others can say, and do so privately. Any solution that I would participate in supporting would have to eliminate this restriction and require that moderation be done openly. I even think there are good reasons to allow anonymous postings, currently banned by E-democracy. Would the E-democracy board be able to support a truly open "commons"? Given those limitations, are there other people besides me on this list who have a technical background and would be willing to talk about supporting a better interface?
