1. The price discussion in the thread only focuses on the DTU.
But you also need to take into account the Sun Ray server, Virtualisation server and the storage servers and even the Windows licenses if you want to compare a Windows vdi solution. I would like to see a Total Cost of Ownerschip picture from Oracle based on the current hardware, software and support list prices that Oracle wants to use. I would like to see this for 100, 200,500,1000 desktop setups. Then we can talk about the real price per desktop and about the alternatives in the market. If no one at Oracle can give me this information than I would suggest that Oracle hires me to do this job for them! At this time it looks like the desktop sales can only sell Sun Rays, the server sales can only sell servers, the storage sales can only sell storage and nobody know what Microsoft charges for the licenses. So the customer is lost if it wants to really compare the TCO of a Sun Ray solution. This is the first thing thats needs to change if you want to promote Sun Rays.
You need to cover all items in your VDI proposition and pricing!

2.
The *NIX part can be solved in a hosted solution.
So Oracle should take their TCO story for 10.000 desktops and actively market is at hosting companies.

3.
See option 2 for small companies
Increase the level of Sun Ray expertise within Oracle and Oracle managed services to assist larger companies and partners with Sun Ray deployments. A lot of partners are totally on their own and basically depend on this e-mail list to solve their most pressing problems. All though I like this informal list a lot, it would be nice to have some more local expertise as well.

Roland

1. Cut the price
2. Hide the *NIX parts
3. Make it easier to buy

1. DTU today costs more than a fully loaded PC. On top of that one needs to buy a whole lot of servers. Plus learn a new way to manage desktops. Which may feel to be too much.

2. You need an appliance for the server part. Things may be different in some other countries where Sun/Solaris consultants/gurus are a dime in a dozen but that is NOT the case everywhere.

3. Nobody seems to sell Sun/Oracle stuff unless specifically asked for. It is good enough for almost anything nobody knows about it.
