Just to add some points to the curve. My S900 that is okay with 1040MB of RAM runs Gauge Pro 1.1 if started with extensions off (by holding down the shift key at startup) and tests all of the RAM as fine. This machine will however freeze on starting Gauge Pro 1.1 if extensions are loaded, indicating an extension conflict for that application, but only with all 8 slots filled with 128MB RAM.
All versions of Ramometer, TTPro, XLR8 PowerControl that I have run fine, with the full complement of RAM in that machine. Interestingly as Eric mentioned, this machine had also stopped recognising two 128 MB sticks for some unknown reason (no hardware changes in this machine for quite a while now). Identifying which ones in Apple System Profiler, then pulling, reinserting, CUDA pressing, PRAM zapping and the quick naked voodoo dance for good measure, meant that the 1040MB RAM was recognised again in both OS9.1 and 10.2. My other S900 that freezes during startup with a full 1040 MB of RAM (freezes after extension loading, just before the menus and HD icons load) still freezes at the same point, whether starting with extensions off, or by booting from the original SuperMac System Software CD (Os 7.6). I tried disconnecting HD then booting from CD, all PCI cards except video card, CUDA pressing, PRAM zapping, naked voodoo dance etc. etc., but this machine still doesn't like a full 8 sticks of 128MB RAM in it, no matter what. Take one 128MB stick out from any slot and it is fine. I don't have any boot floppies hanging around, but if some kind soul would send me a disk image (hint, hint Eric) then I may try that as a last attempt. Otherwise, again probably best to just put it down to individual quirkiness of that machine, and remove 1 of the 128MB RAM sticks. Other novel ideas still welcome.
