And I'm so glad you/they did. I hadn't even heard of Umax until I questioned
a Mac savvy friend on moving from the Atari world into the Mac. He suggested
checking out the Umax line as he had a J700 himself - this would have been
early '99?

I found the ad for my S900 in the local Buy & Sell. The seller had purchased
several machines with the intent to make a profit, but Apple had recently
released the beige G3 and, of course, had put all the clone makers out of
business. So I got it for a very good price (brand new factory sealed) - my
friend with the J700 was quite envious to say the least!

It's coming up to four years now since I bought that machine and must say
that I still consider consider it one of the best purchases I've made. I've
spent as much on upgrades as I did on the original machine, but now I've got
a maxed-out Umax with G4 processor, firewire/USB, ATI 128 VR (wTV I/O),
internal Jaz/Syquest drives, 45 GB of SCSI drives, etc. I use it to do
everything from office work, internet/email, digital audio and video, to
games (well, my son does that ...;)

What you can't put a price tag on is the satisfaction and knowledge gained
by building up a customized computer - and this expandability was the beauty
of the S900's architecture.

It only stands to reason that these machines attract a certain kind of
person, which probably explains why this is such a great list ... full of
courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable people. I've learned an immense amount
about the S900, the Mac OS, hardware and software issues, and computer stuff
in general from this group.

So to Dan Knight (list mom), Kennedy Brandt (our own SM "insider"), and all
the other SuperMac "gurus", a toast!!!
