A magnetic cartridge (better) turntable versus a phonograph has an out put
of about 3 micro-volts (MV).  A phonograph is likely to have a lesser
quality ceramic cartridge (poorer) whose output is more in line with other
stereo components 300 mv.  Hence the need for an phono pre-amplifer to
accommodate the difference in line levels.  See all that studying in the
60's did do some good!!  I've follow this thread with interest as I'm
getting ready to put vinyl to CD.
