A turntable will connect directly to the input of a Mac just fine as 
long as the turntable has a built-in preamp. Some do, some don't, 
others have a switch to turn the preamp on and off. If you don't have a 
built-in preamp, you would need to add one. Radioshack can order these 
for about $30 (stock #99701018). They plug inline and use a 9v battery. 
You would also need an adapter to convert from the dual RCA plugs to a 
stereo 1/8th inch plug. RadioShack also have these for about $5.
