A phonograph is likely to have a lesser quality ceramic cartridge (poorer) whose output is more in line with other stereo components 300 mv. Hence the need for an phono pre-amplifer to accommodate the difference in line levels. See all that studying in the 60's did do some good!! I've follow this thread with interest as I'm getting ready to put vinyl to CD. Thanks and keep up the good work WN
---------------- On a different note (pardon the pun), there is another reason to run the phonograph through a receiver or pre-amplifier. Phonograph records have a highly distorted equalization curve to accommodate the recording medium. This is called the RIAA curve and it allows (reasonable) fidelity from vinyl (actually plastic) records. The phono input corrects the audio laid down on the disk, which is exceeding 'tinny' adding back the base response that otherwise cannot be recorded on LPs. So, electrically you have an impedance mismatch, a voltage mismatch, and audibly an equalization mismatch. Some may find the sound acceptable, but it would be a far cry from 'high fidelity'. As an aside, if high fidelity is desired, the levels must be closely monitored to avoid clipping at high levels. With tape, a little over modulation is acceptable, even necessary, but with digital audio, 255 (or 65536) is max volume. If your levels go beyond that on a loud passage, you're toast (so to speak, there I go again). Also, your dynamic range from LP is fairly limited, but that won't get worse than what you already have on the LP. -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
