>Too bad about the proprietary source code, though. In my Perfect Vision of >the future, open source weaving design programs feature prominently. ;> I'm going to chime in here, since I guess I'm the only one who has tried selling tabletweaving software. I think open source software is a great idea, especially when it comes to algorithms for how to display a design, and most especially when it comes to the idea of designing a format (preferrably XML based) for storing those designs in a file. Those things would allow people to use a variety of software and not be forced to choose one program or another. It also provides a fertile ground for software developers to draw on. BUT..... here is something else to think about. How many of you give away the designs you create, or the books you write, or the things you have woven? Writing Windows programs is a grueling process, and takes away from what is already scarce free time that can be spent weaving or spending time with your family. So while I think it is fantastic that there will be collaboration among folks on this list regarding software, and I think it is absolutely wonderful that Eckhard and Gudrun have shared their programs, and that Bonnie would like to share her methods with Eckhard to incorporate into his program, I don't think it is reasonable to expect people to necessarily share their source code. It is already incredibly generous of them to share their executables free of charge.
