Fortunately there are always exceptions to be taken, but depending
on the companies you deal with, the narrow view can be a realistic
one.  There definitely are corporate environments where you won't
move up unless you fit a mold.  The trick is to avoid those and find
the ones where they value you more for what you can do for them
than for how you look in the management team group photo.  Then
keep your finger on the pulse of the company to stay current on
what the company wants and either adjust as needed to keep up if 
you want to stay and "advance" or if not be prepared to move on to 
the next place that values what you want to do. There are worse 
things that can happen than not getting a promotion in your current 
company.
