Part of your problem could be that both SQL-Ledger and QuickBooks have a
limited, well-understood function that is easy to document.

Open ERP has accounting as just a subset of its operation, used as a foundation
for all of the business processes that it supports. So it is inherently more
difficult to understand, because of its scope and the structure it has to
support that scope. That is why so much emphasis has been put on the book, and
why more books and, likely, online help are forthcoming.

In another post (http://openerp.com/forum/topic6769.html#24869) you say "... I
am not going to spend $51 for a book ...". Well, we spent far more than that on
a commercial accounting system that is well reviewed but was ultimately feeble
for our needs. And that was only for accounting, not all of the other processes
that Open ERP supports.

An alternative is to spend a lot of time reading the code, to really understand
what is going on. That is cheap in cash terms, exceedingly expensive in time,
and beyond the capability of most people. That was never an option for our
commercial accounting system and it's always possible with Open ERP.

It's been the reason that Gerry Reno (greno) was able to write a complete IFRS
accounting module, one that can be modified and extended by anyone for their
specific needs. CamptoCamp have written their own accounting adaptations that
are being rolled into the core of Open ERP. That's a capability that is an
immense advantage for Open ERP not available to the commercial systems (and,
because of their architecture, perhaps more difficult in some of the other Open
Source systems); and maybe not one you are interested in.

So I wonder whether you are underestimating what Open ERP can give you
(especially in the light of the comparisons you give, which don't really
compare, in my opinion), and therefore under-investing in education? And maybe
one of those more limited packages is actually all you need.
