I think he means when you're watching live TV (through tivo of course) the
status bar will show the 30 minutes of previous time, in a 60 minute bar
length, there is always extra space in this case, because of the 30 min
buffer. If you then hit record, you'll see it start recording, and THEN the
bar at the bottom will indicate the program you're watching. Otherwise,
it's simply showing a 60 minute bar, with the amount of buffered program
shown.

If you've just changed channels, you'll see the 60 minute bar, and no green
segment, because the buffer is dumped when you change channels. This is one
of the things I'll do in the rare cases where I am watching a "live TV"
program, and then have to record the ending... assuming I've caught up to
real time, I'll wait until a commercial, change channels and back again
(which empties the buffer), and THEN hit record, so that I don't record the
previous 30 minutes of the show that I've already watched.

And of course this works the opposite, if you're watching "live TV" and then
decide part way into the show you want to record it, it can only look back
30 minutes, or the last time you changed channels, so if you decide 15
minutes into a show you want to record it, you will get the whole thing.
Decide to record it 40 minutes into the show, and you'll get everything but
the first 10 minutes.
