I think celebs and publicists have resented having to dance to the corrupt and demeaning tune of the HFPA for many years, but felt boxed in by real or perceived value of nominations and wins. With the mood of the culture this year, and renewed examples of racist views and structure, celebs saw the opportunity to make a break for it.
Again, lets be clear: while the calls have been framed as “reform”, they really are demanding the end of the HFPA as we have known it. They will never agree to this willingly. My question is, can they find a way to maintain the brand “Golden Globes” if they disband HFPA? If not, then most likely outcome is some kind of buy out of the HFPA so current members have incentive. Otherwise they will take the name down to their graves.
