The codec driver was written with reference to that datasheet. It
exposes as much as possible of the hardware capabilities. It isn't meant
to come with warnings. Do this, don't do that.....

If you wan't "dumbed down", then buy "dumbed down".

I'm not going to answer that directly. Or the only thing I will point
out, is that the other manufacturer (HiFiBerry) is also considering that
not everything has been brickwall mastered to 0dbfs, and experienced
users can apply gain in the digital realm without clipping. I also
happen to agree, that dumbing it down for everyone, without a way to
override that behaviour isn't a solution, which is why my most recent
patch provides a way of the user getting the +24db gain from that
Digital control, by giving a dt param. I'm not trying to criticise
anyone, but what Gordon did, by hard coding 0db and not having a way to
override for the user who knows what he is doing. ie. "experienced
user", isn't the best way of dealing with things like this either. But
it was the smart thing to do from his point of view, I suspect, to avoid
dealing with inexperienced users who prefer to complain about things all
day long, rather than understand how they work.

Hey, what are the HiFiBerry folks actually guilty of? Daniel didn't even
write the pcm512x codec driver. ISTR, that was mostly Mark Brown (who
IIRC is employed by Linaro). The IQAudio and HiFiBerry cards are not the
only consumer in the Linux kernel of the pcm512x driver.

If you want someone to blame, blame me! My Pi farm and the testing I do
is fairly well known. (Maybe not by you, but there is a reason that
manufacturers provide me with hardware that hasn't yet gone on sale!)
But my testing regimen for the PCM512x variants, is limited to checking
all sample rates btwn 44k1 and 192k, with 16 and 24 bit source material,
using 2 filters.
a) FIR interpolation with de-emphasis
b) Ringing-less low latency FIR
Which are the two filters that are most commonly used....

You are not what I'd call the "average user". I think both you and I
could agree on that and I think we should leave it there. I would
suggest that whatever "comments" or "complaints" you have towards
HiFiBerry, you take to their forum or email to them.
