In my opinion and experience. Any modern 3D software will do the job in good hands.
Since the invention or integration of GI/Photons/MonteCarlo in 3D software, nothing is produce anymore by amateurs. There were tons of animations made on Amiga when 3D software had no features : add point, move point, delete point. GI can be faked by putting a light with no shadow below a table for example. With some lighting techniques you can get close to GI. It is not important to me if my personal project are comparable to others work. Because nobody is really watching them. Even if you created the best image or 3D animation, chances are, only people on this list will see it. I observed my family while watching one of my animation. They don't really look into details, they look for the main things only. They see a dragon where I see textured polygons with displacement, bad rigging and jerky motion. We get lost into details and lose focus of what is important to the viewer. They will see your animation only once or look for you image only for a second before being bored. Realsoft is comparable to any high-end 3D software, but cheaper. If you could use Renderman/MentalRay/Arnold with RS you would get the same result as those big software. RS is a Raytracer and it produce better image than reality.
