So you expect all volunteers to waste their valuable time searching through all the headers to find out if a poster is subscribed before sending a reply?
No. I know plenty of subscribers do take this trouble and I know that questioners are grateful for that. (I didn't consider setting up a simple filter to mark moderated messages a waste of my time, in fact.) All *I* ask is that anyone not prepared to take this time or effort either doesn't contribute or accepts that their messages may not get to questioners (and doesn't complain when they don't).
This is a mailing list, not a help desk.
You've hit the nail on the head here. Except, no: you haven't. You have accurately identified the nail, but you have neatly missed it and squarely hit your thumb instead. As must be clear from the web site - and contrary to what you claim - this mailing list *is* a help desk: that's exactly how it functions. As the web site says of it, "OpenOffice.org Project community support provided by a network of hundreds of experienced users" and "For questions relating to the use of OpenOffice.org (the application). A very popular and effective list".
I'd be happy to see some changes, but I hope nothing will be changed that makes it any more difficult for newcomers to use.
